Comedy to explore middle school horrors
BY ANN MEAD ASH
DaraSlater, director of the spring play at Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, is excited for the cast of 21 sixththrough eighth- graders to present “30 Horrible Catastrophes of Middle School.” “It’s fast-paced. There’s a lot of physical comedy,” shared Slater. “If middle-schoolers were to put on a comedy show, this is what they would do. They are complaining about everything that makes that awkward (time) really difficult, but in a funny way.”
The show will be presented at Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS), 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 30, at 2 p.m. A special free performance for senior citizens will be held on Thursday, April 27, at 6:30 p.m.
The comedy presents 30 different scenes from middle school tied together by a dare from one student. “At the beginning, there’s a student who says middle school is rough,” said Slater. “They all agree
except for one girl who challenges them to give her 30 catastrophes.”
After the ensemble cast presents 30 vignettes of the horrors of middle school, the challenger notes that she is glad the effort was made because all the students have grown closer and understand each other better.
“It’s fun and laughter for audiences,” said Slater. “Anyone who can remember what it was like to be in middle school will appreciate the humor.” Although some audience members may remember a middle school when social media did not exist, Slater noted that “some things never change.” “Look at that transition with boys and girls,” she pointed out. “In elementary school you don’t want anything to do with the opposite sex, but in middle school, you are supposed to dance with each other.”
Slater noted that a lot of students have struggled and more will struggle with that change in perception.
“It’s the idea of going through that transition from childhood to being a teenager,” she said.

The enabling trap
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Joel Jakubowski, men’s ministry director with The Potter’s House, is well acquainted with the many ways family members can unintentionally enable a loved one’s addiction.
“Some ways are overt like giving money (to the addicted individual),” said Jakubowski. “Others are subtle, such as not asking (the addicted individual) to make a change in (his or her) life.”
Jakubowski will share his

knowledge with those who attend “Enabling vs. Supporting: Understanding How to Best Respond to the Addicted,” a seminar to be held at Conestoga Church of the Brethren, 141 E. Main St., Leola, on Thursday, April 27, beginning at 7 p.m. The free presentation is part of a series that has provided an average of one yearly seminar for the last five years. The event is appropriate for families, pastors, and businesspersons, among others. Light refreshments will be served.

The partnership between Aaron’s Acres and Penn Cinema goes back many years. Prior to the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, sensorysensitive cinema events were held there monthly. Now, to celebrate Aaron’s Acres’ 25th anniversary, the nonprofit has teamed up again with the movie theater located at 541 Airport Road, Lititz. The movie “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will be shown on Thursday, April 27, at 5 and 6:30 p.m. All seats will be
offered at the same price, and 100% of the proceeds will go to help support Aaron’s Acres’ programs. Handling greeting, ushering, and selling snacks at the theater that evening will be up to 20 members of Aaron’s Acres Angels, a new group of typically abled teenagers from throughout the county that formed during COVID-19 restrictions. “We first met online and we did a lot of Zoom calls,” recalled Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres. Paskoff pointed out that the participants first raised

funds for Aaron’s Acres with a virtual bingo. “The funds went to buy pull toys and special snacks for camp, and (Aaron’s Acres Angels) came to camp to present those items. Paskoff said the Angels have visited Aaron’s Acres’ Saturday night school year program, and they have taken part in sensory-sensitive activities to experience limited gross motor skills, low vision, and other disabilities. “They are learning about people with different abilities,” said Paskoff, who added that the students are also involved in other activities such as fundraising to help them to learn to work together, effectively use leadership skills, compromise, and mar ket an event.
Paskoff said the Angels grew out of the Aaron’s Acres
Dream Makers group, which meets each spring and fall and visits summer camp. The Dream Makers make a financial commitment and then choose from several Aaron’s Acres projects to fund. When Jenn Finkelstein, a Dream Maker, wanted her daughter to have a similar experience, the idea for Aaron’s Acres
Angels was born.
Aaron’s Acres provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs ages 5 to 21 through a summer camp and school year programs. Readers who wish to purchase tickets to attend the celebratory movie event may do so at www.aaronsacres.org.
Members of Aaron’s Acres Angels will sell snacks at the organization’s upcoming anniversary event.

One of the biggest challenges presented by the show was a place to stage it. The new middle school does not have an auditorium, and the old middle school is under construction to become a new elementary school. Slater was able to secure the CVHS stage, but with not a lot of rehearsal or set construction time. “I needed flexibility,” said Slater, who chose “30 Horrible Catastrophes” because it offered a minimal set that could be modified.
“(The play) is set in a middle school commons area,” said Slater, who noted that colored panels would be utilized. Lockers set in front of the panels will provide storage for props and costume pieces used throughout the show. The oneact, 60-minute play will require all cast members to be on stage throughout. Slater was thrilled to be able to make the show work for the students. “The kids deserve that because they care so much and they work so hard,” she said.
Tickets to the show, which are discounted for students and seniors, may be purchased in advance at www.showtix4u.com or at the door prior to the show.

Lancaster Public Library prepares for move
After years of planning and construction, Lancaster Public Library is entering the final stage of its building project. On Thursday, April 20, the library will officially begin its move to its new location in Ewell Plaza. The library is expected to be closed for four to six weeks as its collections and equipment are moved into and installed in the new facility.
The brand-new, state-of-theart building at 151 N. Queen St. will place Lancaster Public Library in the center of its community. The library will be fully ADA accessible and has been designed to be welcoming, open, and bright. It will be equipped with 21st-century technology and collections with the goal of bringing a new level of resources to the community. The library’s presence in Ewell Plaza will include spaces for outdoor reading and community programs. An elevated outdoor terrace overlooking the plaza will provide a signature space for library events.
The current building, located at 125 N. Duke St., is set to serve its last patrons on April 19; the library will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day. During the move, the library will be closed to the public. This closure will remain in effect until the new building opens in late spring. Library materials borrowed after April 5 will not be due while the library is closed. Due dates will be extended to Monday, June 12. During the closure period, access to e-books, e-audiobooks, movies, and other electronic
resources will remain available. For more information, visit www.LancasterPublicLibrary.org /on-the-move.
On Saturday, April 22, between 10 a.m. and noon, Lancaster Public Library will host a Parade of Books stretching approximately two blocks from the Duke Street library to Ewell Plaza. Kids and adults who are young at heart are invited to be a part of the library’s historic move by carrying one book per person to the new building while cheered on by Library Lovers stationed along East Marion Street. The parade’s main goal is not to transport the library’s inventory, which will be a done under the guidance of a company that specializes in moving libraries, but instead to provide a fun, symbolic event to kick off the move. Registration is not necessary, and walk-ins are encouraged. For full event details, visit www.LancasterPublicLibrary .org/events.
If all goes according to plan, the new building will be unveiled to patrons during a series of open houses and a ribbon-cutting ceremony in June. As more information becomes available, it will be posted at www.LancasterPublicLibrary.org.
Lancaster Public Library is one of the oldest public libraries in the country. After more than two and a half centuries, the library continues its efforts to inspire, empower, and strengthen the community by connecting people with information, ideas, and enriching experiences.
Seminar frompg 1
Some form of addiction affects nearly 70% of families. “This is about enabling versus support and helping families to understand the difference,” said Jakubowski, who noted that family members may think actions they are taking are helping the individual to gain freedom from the addiction, when they are actually helping to keep them stuck. “The biggest form of enabling is giving the addicted individual money and generally that is (portrayed) by the individual to be for something other than drugs,” said Jakubowski, who noted that inspiring giving in deceptive ways by “pulling on the heartstrings of sympathy” is common. “The parents fall into the trap of thinking they are helping by giving the money, but the money is going directly to support the addiction.”
Jere Cassel, pastor of Conestoga Church of the Brethren, said that the response to the seminars has been positive. He recently spoke to a member of the Plain community, who said that he and his family had been affected by the effort. “A father said he had attended one of the addiction workshops,” recalled Cassel. “(The father told me) ‘We got help for our son, and now he is healthy.’”
Jakubowski concurred that lives can be changed
when families recognize the behavior pattern that is enabling and take appropriate action. “The addicted person goes into a place of denial (because) they don’t want to believe they are (as deeply addicted) as they are,” he explained. “Families also go into denial. They keep trying to provide care in hopes that it will pull the person out of what feels like a bad season, but it’s generally much deeper than an issue of behavior.”
Reservations are not necessary to attend the seminar. More information about The Potter’s House may be found at www.thepottershouse lancaster.com.

Boys’ lax dominates Conrad Weiser, Cedar Crest
BY ERIC PYLES
Early season struggles are often difficult to shake off for a high school sports team. That does not seem to be the case for the boy’s lacrosse team who used wins over Cedar Crest and Conrad Weiser to draw their 2023 mark even at 4-4.
Both wins were by comfortable margins with the ‘Bucks just missing a shutout on the 10th, settling for a 15-1 win over Conrad Weiser instead.
Jeff Fisher fronted the offense (6g-1a) with help from Noah Nolt (3g-1a) and Hunter Silvaggio (2g-1a).
Tyson Zwaska, Bryce Zwaska, Tommy Perella, and Isaiah Sensenig pitched in with one
score apiece. Soren Stoltzfus finished with six saves.
CV’s win over Cedar Crest came on the 6th via a 20-8 final. The Buckskins built a solid 13-3 cushion heading into halftime and coasted through the second half with a 7-5 edge.
Silvaggio was the front man this time around, finishing with seven goals and two assists. Fisher and Nolt split six goals with Fisher adding six assists to his tally. Tyson and Bryce Zwaska added two goals each while Sensenig, Perella and Seth Frankford had one goal each. Stoltzfus finished this victory with seven saves.
Conestoga Valley was on the opposite end of their battle with Hempfield on the
4th, falling by a 12-8 final. Fisher was the lone multi-goal scorer for CV, finishing with four. Silvaggio, Nolt, Sensenig and Bryce Zwaska divided the remaining four scores equally.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
The girl’s lacrosse team was in action just once over the same time frame, falling to Cedar Crest by a 7-6 final on the 6th. Jamie Handwerger was hit with the loss, stopping 13 shots. Sophia Hess netted three scores, Rachel Tsai added two while Charlotte Eby picked up the final goal.
TENNIS
The boy’s tennis team made good use of their lite stretch in the schedule, knocking off Garden Spot 7-0 on the 10th. CV kicked off the match with doubles wins by Yuji Wenger and Michael Horst, Fabian Heine, and Boro Kristic along with Nolan Miller and Eli Lefever. Wenger followed with a number one singles win with Horst adding a number two singles victory. Heine was in the three spot for his win while Miller finished things up at number four singles.
The Buckskins followed that shutout sweep with a 6-1 loss to Cedar Crest on the 12th. CV’s lone team point came at number three doubles where Miller and Lefever were victorious.
VOLLEYBALL
The Easter holiday also gave the boys’ volleyball team a slight rest with only matches opposite Exeter and Penn Manor on the slate. The Buckskins were able to top Penn Manor on the 11th, cruising to a 3-0 win behind 28 assists and 12 digs from Drew Hultstrand as well as 10 kills from Mason Tardibuono. Garrett Funck added six blocks in the 25-20, 25-16 and 25-19 win.
Conestoga Valley found themselves on the opposite end of a 3-0 final on the 5th, falling to Exeter 25-17, 25-13 and 2522. Funck finished with two blocks with Carson Hoover matching that total with aces, adding 11 kills. Rowan Aisenbrey contributed nine digs.
SOFTBALL
The saying goes ‘all good things come to an end’ and for the Lady Buckskin softball team the good time was their fourgame winning streak. The end came on April 10th courtesy of a 3-0 loss to Solanco. Rhiannon
Henry covered the pitching, allowing three runs on five hits and eight walks. The senior hurler did add nine strikeouts to her tally. Brylee Bateson picked up the lone CV hit, a leadoff double in the seventh.
The Lady ‘Bucks picked up a second straight loss on the 12th, falling to Elizabethtown by a 4-1 count. Once again, Henry covered the pitching duties, allowing just one earned run to go with six strikeouts and two walks. CV’s third inning run was of the unearned variety with Alexa Freeburn scoring on an Etown error. Isabella Rodriguez and Kaitlyn Humphreville added to Freeburn’s baseknock with hits of their own.
BASEBALL
Over on the baseball diamond, the Buckskins officially are sitting on a losing streak with losses to Ephrata, Solanco and Elizabethtown pushing CV to 3-5 on the year.
Ephrata handed out the first loss, posting a 10-0 win on the 5th. Brendan Bossert got the start and covered the initial two innings while Jude Thompson took over for the final 2+ innings. Together the pair surrendered nine hits and nine earned runs to go with one strikeout and five walks. Kayden Fisher and Luke Landis accounted for the offense with one hit apiece. The Easter break offered no relief for CV with Solanco posting an 11-7 win on the 10th. Evan Wilson got the start and pitched into the second inning before giving way to Caden Miller. Miller and Seth Burkett split the final six innings in half with Miller absorbing the final five Golden Mule runs. The trio combined for nine strikeouts and three walks. Owen Fisher paced the offense with one hit and two RBI while Wilson, Evan Lapp, Jackson Esbenshade and Miller each finished with one RBI.
April 12th saw the Buckskins fall to Elizabethtown by a 7-2 final. Owen Fisher’s fingerprints were all over the game after taking the loss for his five and one-third innings on the mound coupled with his single RBI at the plate. Kayden Fisher drove in CV’s other run with his fifth inning single while Lapp covered the
final two-thirds of an inning in relief of Fisher.
TRACK
The third time is the charm for the Conestoga Valley track teams. After failing to win both the boys’ and girls’ meets in their initial two chances, the Buckskins were successful on the 11th where the boys topped Garden Spot by a 10247 final while the girls secured an 86-64 win.
The boys claimed all three relay races starting with the work of Micah Kao, Jordan Craighead, Mason Denlinger and Timothy Gitonga in the 3200m relay. Andrew Hoffer and David Irwin were both involved in the remaining two relay wins. Jayden Johnson and Nick Tran joined for the 400m relay win while Zach Phy and Joey Castronova were the other half of the 1600m relay win.
Tran added wins in the 100m and 200m while Castronova added a 400m win. Toss in victories by Kao in the 800, Phy in the 300H and Caleb Malari in
the 110H and CV nearly swept the track wins.
Thabo Lautsbaugh doubled up with wins in the long and triple jump while Jordan Sensenig claimed the high jump. Zimmerman topped the javelin results while Ismael Camacho did the same in pole vault.
The Lady Buckskins needed all three relay wins to hold on and thanks to nine different runners they did just that. Hallie Schnapf, Brooke Denlinger and Alondra Ortiz compromised three-quarters of the 400m and 1600m relay with Mae Linder joining for the 400m relay win and Hershey for the 1600m relay win. Meagan Kime, Abigail Zook, Seana Daugherty and Bellemarie Alston opened the meet with a win in the 3200m relay. Denlinger (100H, 300H) and Ortiz (100m, 200m) added two solo wins to their day while Hershey (400m) and Alston (800m) added one each. Felicia Pius (shot put) and Cheyenne Plank (discus) accounted for the only wins in the field.

Not unlike art, crafts imitate life. But perhaps the most endearing thing about crafts is that they can be both functional and decorative.
All the subtle nuances of the concepts of craft will be on display on Saturday, April 29, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when Albright LIFE Lancaster, 417 W. Frederick St., Lancaster, hosts its inaugural Spring Craft Fair indoors. The free fair will feature food, fun, and, of course, a wide variety of crafts.
Organizers of the event are hoping that the way the Spring Craft Fair is presented will create a festive and community-based atmosphere.
“We were looking at ways to have a fundraiser,” said Annette Kroeck, Albright
LIFE’s community outreach coordinator. “We thought starting small would be a great way to go, and we thought a craft fair would be a good idea, especially with how crafty Lancaster County is.”
Expected to be on hand are a total of 16 crafters and vendors, who will be showing off their wares. There will be quilts, folded art, clay art, screenprinted T-shirts, jewelry, designer cookies, artistic candles and much more. The event will also include giveaway drawings.
There will be plenty to see and do at Albright LIFE Lancaster’s Spring Craft Fair.
“By holding it indoors, we can show off the building and
what we have to offer,” said Kroeck. “The more people who see the inside of the building, the better. We want to get the word out about Albright LIFE (Lancaster). It’s also a way for our participants who are crafty to show off their work.”
The Spring Craft Fair is the first community activity that Albright LIFE (Lancaster) has hosted in more than five years. Events were not held largely due to the pandemic Kroeck said, and providing public re-access to the facility has been “a slow process.”
But she also said that if the inaugural Spring Craft Fair is a success, Albright LIFE Lancaster would consider staging a similar event in the future.

Police department works toward accreditation
The West Earl Township Police Department is on the path to accreditation, led by Police Chief Eric Higgins. The department is working toward accreditation through the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association’s Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (PLEAC), which would signify that the police department follows policies, standards and best practices in law enforcement.
Before moving to Pennsylvania, Higgins served for 26 years as a police officer, including 15 years as chief, in Lakehurst, N.J. He and his wife honeymooned in Lancaster County, and the Higgins family later returned on vacation. Higgins hoped to move to Lancaster County
one day, so when the West Earl Township Police chief position came up, everything fell into place.
When Higgins stepped into his new job four years ago, he sought to increase the department’s professionalism. Changes included officer trainings, policy updates, a focus on community policing and efforts to become more community-focused. The department now plans community outreach events and seeks to increase communication between the police and citizens.
Higgins’ efforts also included starting the accreditation process. Using grant funds awarded last year by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, the police department hired a
consultant to help update policies, and Higgins also sought input from staff members. Since beginning the accreditation process, Higgins has updated or added 41 polices to meet PLEAC standards and implement best practices of law enforcement. The updated policies relate to vehicle pursuits, traffic control and enforcement, domestic violence and protection from abuse, arrest procedures, interviews and interrogations, fair and impartial policing, and other areas of policing.
The department is now in the second phase of accreditation, during which it must gather proof that it meets PLEAC’s standards. The third phase will entail providing this proof to the assessors at

Mastering the ice
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
On April 17, Red Rose Figure Skating Club began a spring session of classes in partnership with Learn To Skate USA. Classes will be held at Regency Ice Rink, 2155 Ambassador Drive, Lancaster, on Mondays until May 22, and summer sessions will be held in June and July. The club seeks to provide both adults and children age 3 and up with an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of ice skating. Each session follows a curriculum provided by Learn to Skate USA, which offers a foundation for those looking to pursue figure skating and ice hockey. After working on basic techniques, coaches will help skaters to perfect more
advanced skills such as onefoot glides, hops and turns. “At the end of the day, skating is skating. Even if you’re a 6-yearold wanting to become a hockey player, you have to learn to skate first,” said Cara Scudner of the Conestoga Valley area, a competitive skater at Red Rose.
Scudner and other seasoned skaters at Red Rose assist with the Learn to Skate program by serving as coaches during the classes. Although the program has been offered by the club in the past, this will be the first session that it has offered in over 10 years. Scudner said that she hopes the group classes offer a more accessible alternative to private lessons for aspiring skaters of any age. “It’s never too late to start ice skating,”
Scudner said. “There’s nothing like it. Skating combines artistry with athleticism. You feel like you’re flying when you’re gliding on the ice.”
In March, Scudner and fellow Red Rose skaters Brian Padgett of Lancaster and Ken Nguyen of Hershey competed in the Eastern and Midwestern Sectional Championships. At the championship competition in Kissimmee, Fla., Nguyen won first place and Padgett won second place. Both Nguyen and Padgett qualified to compete at the silver level in the national championship in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nguyen started skating as an adult through Learn to Skate USA and has regularly helped with the program and competed for the last 12 years. “Being an adult skater, I had more of a fondness to help other adults starting out and to nurture that enjoyment of the sport,” Nguyen said.
Nguyen said that he had been interested in skating for many years and loved to watch it on TV, but never took lessons when he was younger and instead focused on his studies. Once he
graduated from college, he decided to fulfill his dream of becoming a figure skater.
Nguyen noted that one of his favorite aspects of the adult figure skating community is how supportive it is. “We understand as adult skaters that we don’t move like kids, but it’s an enjoyable sport and you’re never too old to learn,” Nguyen said. “You also build relationships with coaches and other skaters. Even if you see them twice a year, you pick up right where you left off.”
