Lookingforward to the 10th annual Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction, organizer Kristen Hertzog said that she is consistently impressed with the inclusivity of the event. “One of the things that makes this auction unique is that it is a group effort, but not by just one church group,” said Hertzog, who noted that volunteers and organizers come from a number of denominations spanning the Plain and non-Plain communities. “This is something that is unique and different, and that makes me proud to be a part of it,” she said.

The 2023 Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction of Northern Lancaster County will be held on Saturday,

May 20, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Hertzog Homestead Event Venue, 470 W. Metzler Road, Ephrata. Organizers have planned a day that will include live and silent auctions, children’s activities, food, and tournaments.

Live and silent auction items will include sheds built by members of the Amish community, a hunting blind, handmade quilts, new sewing machines, Bevanda brand coolers, lawn and garden items, plants, collectibles, and poly weather-resistant lawn furniture. Items designated for the silent auction include thousands of dollars in gift cards to area restaurants and businesses and lots of themed gift baskets.

“Two new additions (to this

year’s event) are the Spikeball tournament and the cornhole tournament,” said Hertzog. Organizer Nelson Martin explained Spikeball, saying, “It is a fun game that uses a small, lightweight trampoline, and (players) bat the ball.” The game can be played by two or four players in a tournament-style competition.

Children will be able to enjoy pony rides, barrel train rides, and a children’s activity barn. Food that will be available for purchase will include chicken barbecue, salads, sub sandwiches, toasted cheeseburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, baked goods, and homemade doughnuts.

“One hundred percent of the proceeds directly benefit education and business training in

Haiti,” said Hertzog, who noted that as in the past, Paradigm Shift, the education division of Transformation Haiti, which teaches leadership skills, and Hope Christian Training Library, located in Montrouis, Haiti, will benefit. In Montrouis, a town with a population of about 18,000, the library offers books in French, Creole, and English and education programs.

According to Hertzog, more than 100 volunteers take part in the festivities, which attracts upward of 1,000 visitors.

“We are anticipating (the Summer Lunch Club) to be a much bigger undertaking (this year),” said Johnathan Barrett, executive director of Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS). According to Barrett, under the direction of coordinator Emma Arnold, the club runs like a “well-oiled machine.” “Emma is amazing,” said Barrett. “She has a plan and she’s very organized.” Although the program operates smoothly, the need for volunteers, the increase in the number of lunches needed, and the costs of food items will present challenges this year.

Summer Lunch Club provides lunches for children in the Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) to enjoy on-site or take home. This year, the program will operate on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at three locations. On Tuesdays, one individual lunch per child - age 18 and under - will be provided. On Thursdays, two lunches will be given out. CVCCS administers the program by working with partner churches, which each host a lunch site. Mellinger Mennonite Church on Lincoln Highway will be a new site this year. As in the past, Faith Church will oversee the Flory Park site, and Lancaster Alliance Church will hand out lunches to children at a location at Country Club Apartments. Meals will be available beginning Tuesday, June 13, through Thursday, Aug. 10.

Organizers of the 10th annual Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction have gathered a variety of items to be sold at live and silent auctions on the day of the event.

Initial lunch preparations will be based on last year’s numbers, according to Barrett. “Flory and Country Club are really well attended, and it could be 20 to 40 at the start and up to 60 per serving later in the summer,” he said. The program is no longer government-funded, so Barrett raises money to cover the costs of meals by adding a special Summer Lunch Club graphic to the CVCCS’ home page at http://cvccs.org. Clicking on the graphic offers the option of donating a specific number of meals to the cause. Barrett has raised enough to cover more than 2,000 of the approximately 3,000 meals to be distributed.

On this year’s Lunch Club menu are walking tacos, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chicken nuggets, and pasta dishes. “After 12:30, if there’s food left parents may partake,” said Barrett, who added that while information about food allergens will be provided, special dietary requests cannot be

accommodated.

About 10 volunteers per lunch day are needed to help prepare and pack lunches at CVCCS prior to delivery and to deliver them to the Lunch Club sites. “(Volunteers are needed) each Tuesday and Thursday for a few hours, usually 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.,” said Barrett. “We always need volunteers.”

The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps’ mission is to do the most good. That includes financial aid for county students seeking to further their educations at college.

Recently, the Salvation Army Lancaster Corps awarded its annual Olga Ruth Stratton and Thomas E. Wolf scholarships to 20 seniors from 13 Lancaster County high schools. The students formally accepted their scholarships at a special awards dinner on April 27 at Eden Resort and Suites, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster.

Recipients and their high schools were Nicole Chen, Penn Manor; Mina Cooper, Dayspring Christian Academy; Savannah Henschel, Warwick; Natalie Klecker, Anchor Christian Academy; Ethan Lin, Hempfield; Kieran McFall, Penn Manor; Caitlyn McGough, Penn Manor; Mercyangelis Morillo, Columbia; Connor Nimmon, Hempfield; Luke Pagilia, Hempfield; Abigail Phillips, Conestoga Valley; Maximillian Ponton, Penn Manor; Tobias Reiff, Lancaster Mennonite; Heavynn Rodriguez, J.P. McCaskey; Savannah Stauffer, Ephrata; Alana Stoltzfus, Lancaster Mennonite; Hagen Supeck, Lampeter-Strasburg; Lily Troutman, Elizabethtown; Avante Webb, J.P. McCaskey; and Hanna Weller, Cocalico. Each student received $2,000 in scholarship monies.

“Our mission is to help people in need,” said Shady Boules, the operations and development manager for the local Salvation Army. “With the scholarships, our focus is to help students and their families. Everyone is welcome

to apply. If students need help to go to college, we’re there for them.”

To apply for the Salvation Army scholarships, students must be residents of Lancaster County, and they must be high school seniors with GPAs of 2.0 or higher who are going on to college and can demonstrate a financial need. After the students submit a 500word essay and are interviewed by a selection committee, the winners are chosen.

“We believe a lot of students don’t have the confidence to go to college because of the financial responsibilities associated with it,” said Boules. “Going to college isn’t cheap. We want to be part of the encouragement, the support. We believe in the next generation. We believe in education. And when we help these students, we hope that they will be motivated to give back to the community.”

Boules said that the scholarship’s number of applicants and number of recipients varies from year to year. But over the 24 years that the

scholarship has been in existence, the Salvation Army has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to county students in need.

“We see the need as being bigger every year,” said Boules. “People used to be able to afford college. We’re trying to secure donors because we want to see it continue. When you see the impact it has on students, you know it’s worth it. You’re changing lives.”

The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps also helps with things like rent assistance, utility assistance, and social services and works closely with other community organizations to promote the greater good.

“The Salvation Army is here for everyone, regardless of language, ethnicity or background,” said Boules. “We want people to support the Salvation Army and to be part of the movement.”

LCAA opens two exhibits for spring season

On May 7, Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), located at 149 Precision Ave. in Strasburg, opened two exhibits: the spring member-

ship show and “Tall Lady Wearing a Hat,” which features the work of LCAA member Dot Stepanaski. The spring membership show is located in the Kauffman Gallery, and Stepanaski’s work is in the Steinmetz Gallery. Both exhibits will be open until Thursday, June 1, during LCAA’s regular hours, which can be found at www.lcaaonline.org.

The spring membership show includes artwork from a variety of LCAA members. Each member was able to enter up to two pieces of work for the show. The paintings will be judged, and awards will be given out in both the professional and nonprofessional categories.

Stepanaski named her exhibit after the unofficial title given to her by the com-

munity, due to her high stature and signature widebrimmed hat. Stepanaski, who is 6 feet tall, said that she wears the hat to prevent her eyes from straining while she paints. “Sometimes, people don’t even recognize me without my hat,” Stepanaski added. “It’s just how everyone knows me.”

“Tall Lady Wearing a Hat” primarily features paintings of landscapes, but also includes a few portraits of animals. Stepanaski is an avid gardener and loves to be immersed in nature, where she finds rest and inspiration for her work. “It speaks to your soul. I always prefer to be out in nature,” Stepanaski said.

All of Stepanaski’s paintings are made from pastel paints, and she is a member of

the Maryland Pastel Society. Stepanaski said that she prefers to use pastel paints due to the purity of their color. All types of paint utilize the same color pigments, but they are differentiated by the substance that is added to make the paint: oil paint is thick and viscous and watercolor paint is thin and translucent. Pastel paint is distinguishable from other types of paint due to the fact that very little binder is applied to the pigment. “When you apply pastel paint, there’s a quality that is visually exciting because of the way it reflects light,” Stepanaski said.

As a member of the Maryland Pastel Society, Stepanaski gathers with other pastel painters to compete in art shows. The group also holds quarterly meetings, where members discuss pastel painting techniques and watch demonstrations from guest artists.

LCAA will hold a plant sale fundraiser on Saturday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sunday, May 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. The plants in the sale will all be donated from LCAA members’ gardens, including many from Stepanaski’s garden. For more information, call 717-687-7061.

Ephrata Cloister Chorus plans concert

The Ephrata Cloister Chorus will present its annual spring concert on Sunday, May 21, at 3 p.m. in the 1741 Meetinghouse (Saal) at Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata. The free concert will feature a significant number of compositions created by the community’s founder, Conrad Beissel, and by Sister Föben, who has been recognized as one of America’s first female composers. The pieces have been edited for modern performance by Russell Getz and Christopher Herbert.

In addition, the chorus will present comparative and contrasting choral works by other religious-focused

Pathways announces new program

Pathways Hybrid-learning School in northern Lancaster County will launch a new program for the 2023-24 school year. The homeschool- or coop-style, half-day program is intended to support parents as teachers and students in kindergarten through grade two (ages 5 to 8) as engaged learners. It is open to any family whether or not the family wishes to ultimately enroll its students with Pathways for grade three and above.

The program will begin on Monday, Aug. 28, with a parent and student orientation and will continue into May 2024 on Mondays from noon to 2:15 p.m. It will follow the general Pathways School academic calendar. The location will vary depending on the class needs of the day. It will be held at either the Senior High Campus at the Brubaker Homestead or at the St. John’s Center Lower-Level Campus, both near Terre Hill.

Early primary children will have opportunities to learn alongside other children. The students will be gently introduced to group learning through activities in science,

groups of early America, including Moravian, River Brethren, Shaker, and African-American traditions. Give-what-you-will donations will be accepted at the door to the Saal to support the work of the Ephrata Cloister Chorus.

The museum will be open to visitors at noon with free admission to the site. The orientation video will be shown in the auditorium at 12:30 p.m., followed at 1 p.m. by a cake and beverage reception in the Visitor Center until the time of the performance.

Two historic buildings on the property, the Saal and the Saron (the sisters’ dormitory), will be open for visitation with interpreters. No guided tours will be offered that afternoon, but visitors will be encouraged to follow the halfmile route along paved pathways through the property and around the historic buildings until the hourlong performance begins at 3 p.m.

Attendees may also stop by the Visitor Center to view a display of memorabilia from the years that the summer drama, “Vorspiel,” was performed on Saturday nights in the amphitheater. For over 20 years starting in the 1960s, the chorus and cast sang and acted

art, music, literature, and social studies that are led by a team of Pathways educators. While children participate in these activities, parents will explore and learn instructional strategies, content, and processes. Emphasis will be placed on working with their children in the initial home setting. These parental sessions will be led by the professional Pathways educators. Parents will also gain experi-

ence working together with their children and applying approaches learned, all under the guidance of the Pathways staff. The program is designed to ease parents’ apprehension about becoming a teacher.

Enrollment is now open for parents and early primary students in the school’s service area of Lancaster and Berks counties. For more information and enrollment forms, visit www.learningatpathways.org.

Buckskins’ volleyball battles Comets but falls short

In the world of sports, high school or otherwise, a loss is a loss, and it rarely makes a difference if it was close or not. Need an example, look no further than the boys’ volleyball team and their 3-0 loss to Penn Manor on May 4th. The Buckskins lost the three games by a total of 14 points with the bulk of them coming in the Comets 25-16 game three, matching sealing win.

Game one went to Penn Manor by a 25-22 final and game two followed with a 2523 final. Drew Hultstrand (21 assists), Rowan Aisenbrey (18 digs) and Mason Tardibuono (10 kills) kept things close.

The ‘Bucks all but secured their District 3-3A playoff spot with a 3-0 win over Manheim Township on the 9th. The Blue Streaks kept things close, but CV was able to post 25-20, 25-22 and 25-19 wins sweeping the match. Hult-

strand dished out 30 more assists while adding eight digs. Carson Hoover added two aces to his 10 kills while Garret Funck finished with two blocks.

TRACK

The track teams finished their regular season with a trip to Elizabethtown on the 8th. The result was an 81-69 win for the girls and an 87-63 win on the boy’s side.

Brooke Denlinger and Alondra Ortiz paced the Lady Buckskins win with two solo and two relay wins. Denlinger won the 100H (15.0) and 300H (48.0) while Ortiz topped the 100m (12.0) and 200m (25.0). The duo teamed up with Hallie Schnapf and Mae Lindor for a 400m relay win and with Bellemarie Alston and Elli Hershey for a 1600m relay win. CV swept the relay events thanks to Meagan Kime, Kylie Antrim, Seana Dougherty and Alston clocking a 10:16 in the 3200m relay. The final two wins came in the field with Katelyn Williams taking the javelin and Hershey the high jump.

The boys took the meet despite just one relay win with Jayden Johnson, Andrew Hoffner, Zach Phy and Nick Tran posting a 44.0

to claim the 400m relay. Tran added wins in the 100m (11.0) and 200m (22.0) while Phy claimed the 300H with a 39.0. Caleb Malari gave CV a hurdles sweep with a 15.0 in the 110H while Timothy Gitonga picked up the final win on the track with his 4:32 in the 1600m.

Five different Buckskins posted one field win each starting with Michael Jackson in the long jump. Thabo Lautsbaugh won the triple jump with Anderson taking the high jump. Aiden Zimmerman continued his stellar season with a 173’ toss in the javelin while Luke Morley topped the pole vault field by clearing 10-6.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

The 2023 girls’ lacrosse season came to a close on May 5th when CV dropped their finale to Garden Spot, 10-9. One day prior the Lady Buckskins found themselves on the wrong end of another 109 final, this time with Lancaster Country Day handing out the loss. Alaina Culbert and Jordyn Hironimus each netted a hat trick in the loss. Sophia Hess added two goals and Rachel Tsai the final tally. Jamie Handwerger finished with 10 saves.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

The boy’s lacrosse team dropped to 9-7 overall after a 15-8 loss to Cocalico on May 4th. The Eagles put the game away in the second and third quarters where they outscored CV 11-2. The ‘Bucks actually held a slim 6-4 edge in the remaining two frames, but it was not enough to overcome the Cocalico rush.

Soren Stoltzfus finished with 17 saves while Jeff Fisher paced the attack with three goals and four assists. Tyson Zwaska, Noah Nolt, Hunter Silvaggio, Isaiah Sensenig and Justin Corson each tacked on one goal.

BASEBALL

Count the baseball team among the spring sports teams turning in their uniforms. The Buckskins finished 6-14 on the year with the final victory coming on the 5th. CV used a six-run opening frame to get by Elizabethtown 9-4. Jude Thompson enjoyed the win after covering six innings. Evan Lapp took care of the final frame with the pair combining for one walk and no strikeouts.

Six different ‘Bucks all finished with one RBI led by Owen Fisher and his fourth inning solo blast. Thompson, Caden Miller, Luke Landis and Kayden Fisher all picked up their RBI with a single while Evan Wilson lifted a sac fly in the sixth for his RBI.

Lampeter-Strasburg came to town on the 8th and left a 7-1 winner. Kayden Fisher broke up the Pioneer shutout with his RBI single in the seventh. Owen Fisher pitched into the fifth before giving way to Miller. He lasted one inning while Wilson covered the final two frames. Together they allowed seven runs with only five earned runs to go with four walks and eight strikeouts.

CV stepped out of the L-L for the season finale on May 9th, hosting Red Lion. The Lions needed five innings to secure a 10-0 win, handing Brendan Bosset the loss for his four innings of work. Lapp covered the final three outs where he surrendered the final run. Lapp was also responsible for the lone CV hit, leading off the second with a single.

SOFTBALL

The softball team finished their 2023 season with four straight losses, leaving the Lady Buckskins 7-13 overall.

Elizabethtown handed out the first of those losses, claiming a 5-1 win on May 5th. The Lady Bears plated all five of their runs in the seventh, flipping CV’s 1-0 lead into the 5-1 final.

Brylee Bateson was responsible for that run, smacking a single in the fifth. Rhiannon Henry pitched all seven innings, but two CV errors pushed all five E-town runs into the unearned column.

Conestoga Valley’s offense continued to struggle on the 8th leading to a 3-0 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg. Henry added another complete game loss to her record despite finishing with nine strikeouts. Hollyn Helsel connected on two of CV’s three hits while

Isabella Rodriguez picked up the final single.

Ephrata came to town on the 9th, needing five innings to secure the 17-1 win. Henry and Bateson split pitching duties, combining for four strikeouts and five walks. Bateson, Rodriguez, Alexa Freeburn and Tori Rhoads accounted for the offense, each finishing with a single. The final setback of the season came on the 10th in heartbreaking fashion for CV. The Lady Buckskins used a two-run single by Kaitlyn Humphreville to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Henry and her 11 strikeouts kept the score 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth. There the Lady Barons plated three runs to go up 3-2 where the score stayed after CV went three up-three down in the top of the seventh.

In honor of Stop Food Waste Day, Flashfood and the Giant Company recently announced a major milestone in their sustainability and food waste reduction efforts. Since May 2020, when it first partnered with Flashfood, a digital marketplace that connects consumers to heavily discounted food nearing its best-by date, the Giant Company has diverted 6 million pounds of food from landfills.

As a direct result, the Giant Company and Flashfood have together saved more than 10 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of taking 1,186 cars off the road for a year. The food saved also equates to more than two million meals that fed families instead of ending up in landfills.

The Flashfood program started as a four-store pilot in 2020 and has since been integrated across 190 locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

Flashfood shoppers use the app to save on meats, dairy products, seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables and other grocery items. Shoppers browse and purchase discounted food items directly through the Flashfood app on their mobile phone and then pick up their order from the Flashfood Zone located inside their participating Giant or Martin’s store.

For more information on Giant’s community impact efforts, visit www.giantfood stores.com/pages/purpose. More information about Flashfood is available at www.flashfood.com.
