Steps to Success dedicates playground

Before the dedication of the Steps to Success Memorial Playground at its new home at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, on May 30, Michelle Harbaugh, director of Steps to Success, referred to the event as “an open house celebration of the playground.” The

celebration included a dedication with Zion Lutheran pastor Karen Larson officiating, refreshments, and a chance for the Steps community members to see and enjoy the relocated equipment.

According to Harbaugh, the playground was accessible to the community while it was being built at Zion in 2021, but a fence was put in

to meet local requirements, and the event was an opportunity to visit again. “The playground is locked when we aren’t here,” she noted. The original fenced playground was built at the prior Steps to Success location at 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, in 2007. Harbaugh said that funding had been given in honor of a retired teacher who was also a student’s grandparent. “It was built in memory of Anne Persons Robinson,” reported Harbaugh, who said that between 2015 and 2017, the organization raised funds and Steps received more funds to expand the playground donated in memory of grandparents. “(The toddler playground) had a poured rubber surface and donated playsets,” she pointed out. That playground, which was dedicated in April of 2018, was built in memory of Grace Eicher and Lee Rowland, grandparentsof students at Steps. The name of the Rev. Irvin E. Straw, Jr., a board member and supporter from 1995 to 2019, was added to those names on the dedication plaque.

Small ambulance company has BIG heart

“Our folks love giving back to the community,” said EMS Chief Darrell Fisher of New Holland Ambulance, which covers Leola in addition to

the ELANCO area. “They may work in a hospital, but on their off time, they volunteer on our trucks.” Fisher noted that registered nurses and a nurse practitioner are among the regular volunteers.

Special needs benefit auction planned

All the ambulance company volunteers were honored during the organization’s Family Safety Day on May 6 by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council with the Small EMS Agency of the Year award. Fisher explained that small agencies complete fewer than 5,000 calls per year. “It’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime achievement,” he said, noting that multiple nomination letters were sent on behalf of the company and that state representatives audited the organization’s response times to evaluate them for the prize. Fisher noted

Each Tuesday, 15 men ranging in age from 19 to 75 gather at Caring Hearts, one of several centers in Lancaster County that serve members of the Plain community. On Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the converted barn where the group meets hums with activity.

According to Chris Glick, who, along with Sarah Glick, oversees Caring Hearts on those days, the men who participate spend time in worship, singing hymns, and hearing a Bible story. Work time

includes counting out 100 screws and then transferring them to boxes. “We pack Tapcon screws for hardware stores and screws and small bolts in assortments,” said Chris, who noted the men also put washers on bolts and lags for swing set shops. At 11 a.m., the group stops for lunch, followed by some game time, which often includes cornhole. Work starts again at 1 p.m., and another break is offered at 1:30 p.m. “(The men) usually play a memory game then, which is good for the mind,” said Chris.

Special needs

Caring Hearts and the other centers - Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, Sunny Sunbeam, New Horizons, Upper Valley Workshop, Shady Hollow, and Sunnyside Specials - together give the more than 100 adults with special needs who attend a chance to socialize and do productive work. Chris relayed that some of the men at Caring Hearts come from as far away as Holtwood and Maryland, and one comes from Lebanon.

To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly bringsomething, buy-something auction. The 17th annual Special Needs Benefit Auction will be held on Monday, July 3, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of foods

will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m.

Highlights of this year’s auction will include crafts, tools, sheds, and outdoor furniture. A 26-by-28-foot garage, built on the highest bidder’s site, will go up for auction. The building will have a concrete floor, two garage doors, and an attic with stairs. Other items will include grills, scooters, wagons, and a flag croquet set. Quilts will be sold at 4 p.m., and carriages, swing sets, and sheds will be sold beginning at 6 p.m.

Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fried shrimp, salad, fruit cups, french fries, blooming onions, and soft pretzels. The list of beverages offered will include smoothies and iced coffee. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out. Drive-through service will be available from 5:30 a.m. through 6 p.m.

Chris first became involved with Caring Hearts around 2012, serving as a substitute before taking over in late 2019. “I enjoy it,” he said. “You get attached to the guys.” Chris views his work as bringing purpose to the men. “I try to keep them occupied, and then they are happy,” he said. “It’s good for the mind to keep it occupied.”

Those who would like to donate items to the sale may call 717-687-5152,

New Holland Ambulance

that currently, New Holland Ambulance has about 111 active volunteers and seven career staff members handling 10 calls a day between the two stations.

Another way that local volunteers serve is as instructors and evaluators for the emergency medical technician (EMT) certification program, which the organization holds yearly as part of its education institute. “We were accredited through the Pennsylvania Department of Health as our own training institute,” said Fisher. The application process opens in October, and the class runs from January to June on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 10 p.m. for a total of about 220 hours. “We

get about 70 applications, and we can only accept 30,” said Fisher, who added that students from Fivepointville, White Horse, and Gordonville have taken the class and returned to serve their local ambulance companies.

Fisher pointed out that as part of the class, students join New Holland’s EMTs on the ambulances. “They are able to learn alongside providers and not just in the classroom,” he said, explaining that the goal is to recognize and stop immediate life threats, such as breathing problems or allergic reactions. He said EMTs work like detectives to discover the cause of a medical issue. To test students on whether they recognize symptoms, a writ-

ten test is given along with 16 testing stations where evaluators see if a student is proficient at recognizing and treating life threats. “(It’s about) recognizing that life threat as quickly as possible and trying to reverse that,” said Fisher. Students who successfully complete the program become Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMTs).

Making the EMS program available locally is important to the organization. “Our education institute allows us to provide these classes for our community without (students) having to go to a local college or hospital,” said Fisher. “Our goal would be to make it easier for moms and

Students compete at ISEF

Lancaster Catholic High School’s Dominick Baksh and McCaskey High School’s Kai Unwin-Wisnosky participated in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in May in Dallas. While neither student captured the grand prize, each still walked away with something valuable: for Dominick, the interest and support of a judge who wants to mentor him and see his work published, and for Kai, the opportunity for collaboration on an international level.

Ninth-grade student Kai and 10th-grader Dominick won the Grand Champion and Senior Division Champion titles, respectively, at the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair held in March. They traveled to Dallas to compete among high school students from over 60 countries and six continents,

presenting their projects to judges during a weeklong competition from May 13 to 19.

Dominick’s study of investigating molecular subtypes of endometrial cancer, titled “Immune Checkpoint Regulation in Molecular Subtypes of Endometrial Cancer - Expression of PD-L1/PD-1,” caught the eye of Dr. Asha Pillai, chair of hematology at Regeneron, who is a former ISEF finalist and heads up the Biomedical Sciences portion of the judging. She invited Dominick to a Boston symposium she is chairing for mentoring and encouraged him to publish his work. Dominick will attend the Cancer Immunity and Immunotherapy symposium in June.

Kai’s project, titled “Which Savonius Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine Setup Is More Efficient: One With a Wind Deflector or One Without,” spurred interactions for

future collaborations with colleagues from the U.S. as well as Egypt, Haiti and Zimbabwe. Kai noted that he was able to connect with fellow contestants and representatives of colleges and companies.

Both students also received accolades from the U.S. Department of the Air Force and North Carolina State University for their projects.

Garden club to meet

The Country Gardeners Club of Eastern Lancaster County will meet on Thursday, June 15, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland.

The program will be “Keys to Successful Composting” by Colleen Emmerling, a

Penn State Master Gardener. Composting is imitating and managing the slow, natural process of decomposition of organic materials. It is a simple process that people may employ to help reduce food waste and trash going to landfills as well as to improve garden soil. Atten-

dees will learn the basics about decomposing, how to get started, what can and cannot be composted, and some troubleshooting tips.

Emmerling has been a Penn State Extension Master Gardener in Lancaster County since 2020. A former estimator for commercial print, she enjoys tackling gardening challenges in her current shade-dominant property. Her interest in hobby gardening began with a part-time job in perennials at Funk’s Farm Market, where she developed the desire to be a good steward of the land.

June designated as Real Estate Planning Month

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices recently announced June as Real Estate Planning Month and, in partnership with the national brand Homesale Realty, has dedicated itself to arming agents with the tools, resources and education necessary to help their clients turn their real estate dreams into real estate plans.

The company’s agents are equipped to help community members set actionable goals, make viable road maps and develop a lifestyle plan that assists them in achieving their goals - from buying, selling and investing to making improvements and more. People are encouraged to contact an agent today to get started on their personalized real estate plan.

Berkshire Hathaway Homesale Realty has more than 30 offices serving Maryland and Pennsylvania, including a home office in Lancaster at 215 S. Centerville Road.

“The playground transformed when it moved in the spring of 2021,” reported Harbaugh. “It has a brandnew look to it,” she pointed out, saying that while some of the equipment is the same, it is configured differently. “The space is new, but the equipment donated in memory of people is there,” she explained, noting that some green space has been incorporated. “We’ve added the garden boxes. They were an Eagle Scout project completed by Josh Herr in June 2021,” said Harbaugh. She noted that the seven boxes had never officially been dedicated, but that they were dedicated with a plaque in honor of Lourdes Berke, a longtime Steps teacher, who recently underwent a kidney transplant. “She loves gardening as much as she loves kids, so we decided to name the gardens in her honor,” said Harbaugh.

The dedication included a new plaque placed on a bench in the playground area in honor of Melissa Readman’s 23 years of service to shaping young minds at Steps to Success.

In June of 2021, Josh Herr added seven garden boxes outside the playground to complete his Eagle Scout Project.

Club improves disc golf course

The Lancaster County Disc Golf Club (LCDGC) upgraded nine of the pads on the disc golf course at Roland Park in Akron to prevent slipping. Previously made of rubber, the pads are now made of concrete with a brush finish. The club will complete the final nine pads in the next few months.

Proceeds from the New Year’s Day Doubles Tournament were the primary source of funds for the project. The new pads should last for 10 to 15 years.

Disc golf is a free activity that enables people of all ages to have fun and spend time in open spaces. Similar to regular golf, disc golf involves trying to throw a disc into a basket in the least number of throws possible. LCDGC members enjoy Thursday night leagues and tournaments on a weekly basis. In addition, the course at Roland Park is used by casual players.

In Akron, leagues meet for rounds on Thursday nights, when they compete for scores and ratings. On weekends, tournaments are held all over Pennsylvania, with six scheduled in Akron. There are eight courses in Lancaster County.

LCDGC is preparing for the Pennsylvania State Disc Golf Championship, which will be held on Friday, Aug.
