hen Jennifer Raff was looking for an activity for her daughters that she felt was safer than horseback riding, she heard about the Hooley School of Irish Dance, then located in Akron. She enrolled her older daughter, Olivia, and soon her younger daughter, Natalie, was also interested. “I wanted to do the same thing as (my big sister),” explained Natalie. Now Natalie, a 13-year-old Conestoga Valley Virtual Academy student, is a top Irish dancer, placing 10th in the World Irish Dance Championships - the second-highest American in her age group - in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in April. To qualify for the competition, she won the U.S. National Championships in July 2021 and placed third at the Mid-Atlantic Region Oireachtas in November 2021. Just under 200 dancers competed in the same division as Natalie. The contest drew thousands of dancers from more than 20 countries, but the top eight finalists were all from Ireland.

her by a company in England that the family has worked with for several years. The designer developed her signature black and yellow look for her. Irish dance competitors are also known for hair that is piled high on their heads. “We tried curling her hair, but before we knew it, we were putting on the big wig,” said Jennifer, who noted that hair accessories called “doughnuts” may be piled three high on a dancer’s head. “They’re not too heavy,” noted Natalie. Jennifer pointed out that the tall hair is more than just a style. “When you’re on that big stage in a concert hall, because the (dancers) are further away, the bigger hair does look better,” she said. Because Natalie’s schooling is now done in a hybrid format with some online and some in person, her schedule will allow her to continue to practice her dancing with a focus on competitions. Natalie still trains at the Hooley School, now located in Brownstown, which is owned and directed by Crystal Carper, a certified Irish dance teacher and adjudicator.

Natalie, who is a student of Sara Locke, has participated in several national competitions in the past, traveling to both Ireland and Scotland to compete. Dancers compete in three categories: hard shoe, which uses a shoe with a built-up sole; soft shoe, where the shoes are more like supple ballet slippers; and set, which is also a hard shoe dance. Jennifer said that Natalie got much more serious about competing during the COVID-19 shutdown. “(The girls) were home and didn’t have as much to do,” said Jennifer. “It was good exercise.” Both mother and daughter commented on the distinctive costumes associated with the activity. Jennifer noted that just a few decades ago the costumes were decorated more with traditional embroidery and fewer flashy decorations. “The skirts were longer and they had pleats in front,” she said, adding that hard panels helped to hold skirts in place. “As the dancing has evolved to become more athletic, (the costumes changed),” she explained, adding, “You can’t kick with those (panels) in there.” Natalie’s costumes are designed especially for

Cavod from pg 1 Both events will feature free food, door prizes, face painting, fairy hair glitter, a bounce house, a visit by local radio personalities who will broadcast live, and more. Free food options will include hot dogs and beverages. Ice cream will be provided free for those who register for classes that day or who have already registered for the fall session. Ice cream will also be available for purchase. Cavod open house events are known for the costumed characters from Cavod Theatre shows who greet visitors. Regular performances will include music, theater, and dance presentations every 30 minutes. Every half hour, attendees will have an opportunity to win door prizes, and a grand prize featuring a variety of experiences, including tickets to shows, will be given away. Cavod music director Amy Rau noted that a new vocal class will be included in the schedule. “We have added vocal technique and harmony classes for ages 8 to 12 and 13 to adult,” she noted, explaining that the class will be a group experience. “We will spend an hour a week working on music theory,” Rau stated, adding that learning to read music, understanding music, ear training exercises, and learning how

to apply all that to musical pieces will be the focus. “We will learn repertoire that allows us to sing in harmony together with a group of people,” she said. A junior program for dancers ages 5 to 8 will be expanding to introduce that age group to all the genres of dance Cavod offers. Dienner noted that a new teacher, Stephanie Brooks Martin, has arrived from New York City. Dienner said that Martin’s experience with off-Broadway shows will be valuable in her supervision of the tap dancing program. In addition, a new Friends in Motion Junior class will be available for those ages 7 to 12. Friends in Motion is designed for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Connie Dienner, director of Cavod, said that the organization has held similar classes for adults for some time and that classes for younger students had been requested. Dienner is looking forward to the events with enthusiasm. “Open houses are always a highlight,” she said, noting that meeting teachers is important to prospective students and their parents. The HoverBar Duo iPad stands will be used by the Family and Consumer Sciences Department to allow more versatility in the kitchens. iPad stands will be purchased for each kitchen, and students will use their electronic tablets to record their skills for evaluation and to access digital resources such as recipes and online video demonstrations. The purpose of the Ninja Sensory Path is to create a safe space for students to refocus when they may need an extra break outside of the traditional classroom setting. Students occasionally need

extra time to process big emotions and feelings; the path will give students the ability to work through some of these feelings. The path will include multifunctional movement and sensory areas designed to target the different body zones and promote good self-regulation. The functional classroom will help CVHS students to prepare for life outside of CVHS by offering more hands-on experiences intended to prepare students to be contributors in their household or in their living space. This grant will allow for the purchase of a bed and bedding See CVEF pg 5

Pet Pantry of Lancaster County is teaming up with national nonprofit Petco Love and Skechers to highlight the fun in fostering pets. Pet fostering is important for animal shelters, particularly during

l t Al n Ea Pancake & Ca u Sausage Breakfast Yo $7.00

the busy summer season. According to the Pet Pantry Rescue Team, the greatest stressor for dogs living in a kennel environment is social isolation. By helping to assure a dog that it is safe and will continue to be cared for and loved, a foster volunteer can mitigate the animal’s stress. The dog program at the pet pantry is 100% foster-based. Dogs do not live in kennels; they are placed in homes. However, this method means that the organization can only save as many dogs as it has

foster families to place them with. Throughout June, Petco Love will work with its network of partners nationwide to share the fun aspects of fostering while helping pet parents get through their foster pet goodbyes. Petco Love is taking a humorous approach to saying goodbye to foster pets by holding a #MyFosterBreakUp story contest featuring Foster Breakup Kits giveaways and a curated playlist to help foster pet parents through their goodbyes. Caring Hearts and the other centers - Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, Sunny Sunbeam, New Horizons, Upper Valley Workshop, Shady Hollow, and Sunnyside Specials give a total of more than 80 students who attend a chance to learn, socialize, and take part in productive work. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly bringsomething, buy-something auction. The 16th annual will be held on Monday, July 4, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of foods will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m. According to organizers, highlights of this year’s auction will include items such as a carriage, a volleyball set, a grill, a Breeo fire pit, a flag croquet set, and a scooter. Large specialty items will be sold at 6 p.m. Swing sets and sheds will be sold, and a 26-by-28-foot garage, built on the highest bidder’s site, will go up for auction. The building will have a concrete floor, two garage doors, and an attic with stairs. Caring Hearts has a special connection to the auction because cross-stitched quilts made there will be sold at 4 p.m. Head teacher Anna Stoltzfus explained that the quilts are produced by having the female participants cross stitch items. “One of the mothers puts (the pieces) together, and we have it in a frame at the shop, and then mothers and friends come and quilt it,” said Stoltzfus of the process.

“Nothing welcomes summer quite like the sound of music in the park, and we are so excited to see the community bring their blankets and lawn chairs to relax and enjoy our great lineup this year,” said Patti Creighton, concert committee member. “One of my favorite features of our concert series is the wide age range of audience members it draws. I love seeing children dancing on the grassy hill with their families, adult fans arriving early to see their favorite band, and groups of seniors laughing and chatting together, enjoying the perfect summer combination of nature and good music.” Each year, the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation strives to create a lineup featuring a variety of artists and genres. The 2022 series will open on June 25 will a performance by Big Fat Meanies. Voted Best Rock Band in central Pennsylvania, the eight-piece group is based in Lancaster and features the vocals of Brenna Diehl and
