A magical journey
Dinner theater offers free shows to veterans and police officers
BY ANN MEAD ASH
When magician Brett Myers was growing up in Chambersburg, he remembers his family visiting Lancaster County to attend presentations at Sight & Sound Theatre. In 2011, he and his wife, Labrina, moved to the area. For a time, the couple traveled doing magic shows in partnership with nonprofit organizations, but moving to the county made them consider producing a local show.
Troop releases book about Girl Scouting
BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Girl Scout Troop 71308, a multi-level troop in Leola that includes Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors, needed to perform a Take Action Project to receive a Journey award, the group came upon a unique way to complete the effort. “The Journey was called ‘World of Girls,’” said Laura Summerson, who leads the troop alongside Malerie Ainge. “We were learning about everyone around the world and how a lot of Girl Scouts do similar
things,” she added, explaining that the Scouts all learn the same concepts.
The group also discussed the myths surrounding Girl Scouting. “We talked about how people have a misconception that all Girl Scouts do are cookies, crafts, and camps,” said Summerson. “We thought it would be helpful to get out information that talks about what we do beyond that.”
To help remedy that problem and complete the Journey, the 18 troop members wrote a 28-page book titled “More Than Cookies, Crafts, and Camp.” The writing
process began in March with each girl completing at least a page of writing and illustration at the troop’s weekly meetings. Summerson explained that each girl finished two rough drafts before the final copy and illustration were completed. Summerson then compiled the book using an Amazon Kindle publishing program. The colorful pages of the book detail troop activities such as laying wreaths
on veterans’ graves as part of Wreaths Across America, horseback riding, making toys for a local animal shelter, and learning about how government works.
On May 25, a book release party with refreshments was held at the Leola United Methodist Church. During the party, each girl read her page from the book aloud. “We had the book on a TV screen for everyone to see,” said Summerson.

“We thought it would be a great place to learn and grow and develop as artists,” said Brett, who stopped traveling in 2015 and connected with a local theater to do a stationary show that allowed for illusions that are harder to do on the road. By 2018, he and Labrina had outgrown the theater space and began searching for something larger.
In 2019, the former Rainbow’s Comedy Playhouse became available. “We moved in on January 1, 2020, and we worked tirelessly for 10 weeks to renovate,” recalled Brett. The Magic & Wonder Dinner Theater was ready to open in March of 2020, but then COVID-19 restrictions hit. “We went into a holding pattern and officially opened July 1, 2020,” Brett said. The Magic & Wonder Mystery variety show has been running ever since.

Donations needed for library’s new building
library’s new home will be larger, brighter and more accessible, and it will feature updated technology and spaces and resources designed for today’s library patrons. The library will feature more usable space, children’s and young adult areas, program spaces and meeting rooms, Wi-Fi and an outdoor terrace. Additionally, the new Business and Reference Center and its professional librarians will continue to provide free access to databas-
es and other information to serve local businesses. The library’s services range from story times and STEM programs for kids to jobhunting resources for adults. For information on specific naming or recognition opportunities, contact Jamie Hall at jhall@lancasterpubliclibrary.or g or 717-394-2651, ext. 119. Additional information about the campaign is available at www.lancasterpublic library.org/fabulas.
Books may be purchased by searching for the title on Amazon, but the troop also purchased 100 author copies. “Each girl got five copies,” explained Summerson. “One to keep. One they all signed as a keepsake (at the release
party), and three to put in little libraries or give to a girl who might be interested in Scouting.”
Summerson explained that while cookies, crafts, and camping are important parts of Scouting, the troop members wanted others to know about the other opportunities the group offers. “We enjoy those things, but there are many other things we like to do as Girl Scouts,” said Sum-
merson. “Our troop has been together for four years, so we have a lot of different things we have done to include in a book.”
The troop meets each Thursday in the West Earl Township Building in Brownstown. Girls who are interested in learning more about joining the troop may visit the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania website at www.gshpa.org.

Girl Scout Troop 71308
The Lancaster Public Library is continuing its Fabulas Campaign to help fund its new building, which will officially open on June 27. As of May, the organization still needed to raise $600,000 of the $10 million required for the project.
In its new location, the library will anchor the first two floors of the Christian Street Parking Garage, facing Barney Ewell Plaza in the 100 block of North Queen Street. The
About 10 years ago, Brett partnered with WJTL to give a magic show at the Junction Center as a fundraiser for HOPE International. “(HOPE International is) an organization that makes poverty disappear,” said Brett. Magic & Wonder recently partnered with The Factory Ministries for a food drive that brought in more than 450 pounds of food along with cash donations for The Factory Market food pantry. Area veterans have been the recipients of the theater’s generosity as well. “We are doing free dinners and shows for veterans and police officers,” said Brett of the special running from Friday, June 30, through Saturday, July 8. Interested veterans and police officers may call the box office at 717-3233077 to learn about the special. “(At the show) they need to (present) identification
that certifies they are an active or retired veteran or a police officer,” Brett noted.
In addition to the magic show, the theater has recently added Jukebox Jive running during 3 p.m. matinees on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through the end of October. “It’s not just a
music show. It has a variety of circus arts woven throughout,” said Brett, who noted that audience members will “experience the wonder decades of ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s.” “We take you to a soda pop shop. We go to the age of Aquarius, Woodstock, and the awesome
’80s,” said Brett, who noted that six vocalists and dancers from around the country will portray greasers, jocks, cheerleaders, and nerds in the two-hour show that includes the greatest hits from the aforementioned decades. “It celebrates the golden age of rock ’n’ roll, and it takes (audience members) on a stroll down memory lane.”
Dinners at the theater now include full-course meals with entrées, appetizers, and soup, and desserts.
More information about the theater, located at 3065 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, may be found at www.magic andwondershow.com.

Rizzetta’s Tones, a Celtic Americana band, will perform in concert at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, at the Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park in the Pavilion 2 bandshell. The event is a part of the Akron Summer Concert Series, sponsored by the law firm Haggerty, Silverman & Justice.
The members of Rizzetta’s Tones play “fraternal twin” hammered dulcimers, a silver flute, high and low whistles, and guitars. They often add in button accordion, Greek bouzouki, mandolin, autoharp, and ukulele, as well as bodhran, djembe, and other percussion instruments such as three frogs.
All members sing lead and
backing vocals. The band’s repertoire includes music from Ireland, Scotland, and the U.S., drawing as well from the traditions of Finland, Brazil, France, Macedonia, and many other lands. The band forges new arrangements and writes original material.
The other two concerts will feature the Harrisburg Mandolin Ensemble on Sunday, July 9, and Mitch and the Mood Swings on Sunday, July 30, also in the bandshell at the Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park. For all concerts in the series, people are invited to bring their lawn chairs or blankets and pack a picnic supper. The events are free of charge.

calendars, on postcards and on greeting cards. Shenk passed away in December of 2021.
Mulberry Art Studios will also showcase more of the work of Rudolph, one of its signature artists. Rudolph was such a prolific artist in his day that even though Mulberry has now held three exhibitions of his
work over the past few years, the new exhibit’s pieces will all be new to the public. The exhibit will have opening receptions on First Fridays, July 7 and Aug. 4, from 5 to 9 p.m.
Rudolph began painting in 1966 and continued into the late 1990s, mostly painting in obscurity. He lived his entire life in his childhood home in
Red Bank, N.J., and spent his free time alone, walking the boardwalks of Asbury Park to Belmar, N.J., and painting in his basement. He died in 2012 during valve replacement surgery.
Rudolph’s work is predominately abstract, created in oils on Masonite with occasional added paper and wax layering. He was favorably critiqued by
the New York Times during the time he spent showing his work in New York City and northern New Jersey galleries. Mulberry Art Studios is located in downtown Lancaster at 21 N. Mulberry St. Free parking is offered in a private lot. For more information about the exhibits, visit www.face book.com/mulberryartstudios.
