asey Kaufhold, a rising senior at Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS), is about to have the experience of a lifetime. The 17-year-old will join other members of the 2021 U.S. Olympic Archery Team in Yumenoshima Park in Tokyo, Japan, on Friday, July 23, to take part in the planned competitive events. “(Archery) started as a family thing we would do for fun,” said Kauf hold, whose family owns Lancaster Archery on Old Philadelphia Pike in Smoketown. “ We had targets set up in the backyard, and I started shooting when I was 3.” By the time Kauf hold was 8, the fun had turned a little more serious as she began taking part in competitions. “When I was 13, I did my first international competition, and since then I have been on some international teams,” explained Kaufhold, who began going to school online in her

freshman year, usually attending in person during the fall semester and virtually in the spring when she was competing. Kauf hold noted that she practices archery about five hours daily, adding that CVHS has been “really great” in working with her to maintain academics along with her competitive archery schedule. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the four stages of Olympic trials for archery were divided, with the first two stages being held in 2019 and the last two being held at the end of May in Salt Lake City, Utah. “There’s a qualification round and then eliminations and team rounds,” explained Kaufhold, who noted that the trials are set up to simulate events so that organizers can select team members to compete in certain areas. Kaufhold left for Paris, France, on June 10 to qualify for a team spot. She expected to be in Paris for three weeks and then return home for a little over a week before leaving for Tokyo.

Cavod Performing Arts will hold an open house at its New Holland location on July 10.

“We are so grateful to be here,” said Connie Dienner, founder and director of Cavod Performing Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to offering a godly environment to study the arts. “We are celebrating through this open house.” Dienner said she is especially thankful that the organization has survived the last year or so when COVID-19 restrictions made it difficult to keep going. “It’s only by the support of the community and the grace of God that we’re still here,” she said.

Students in grades one to nine can take morning, noon, and afternoon classes,

choosing from a variety of offerings in each timeslot. The daily schedule allows time for supervised lunches and snack breaks on campus between classes. as when Nora lived there. “There is no water supply to the tub,” noted Bender, who said that heated water from the kitchen had to be brought up the back steps to fill the tub. Although located in Ephrata, the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley does not limit itself to that area, but rather includes any township or borough that touches the banks of the Cocalico Creek, which includes Akron, Clay Township, and Denver. “Anything in this museum was made by or owned by someone who lived in the Cocalico Valley,” explained Bender. Clocks by well-known area clockmakers, Hibshman family items, and the Ephrata 12 o’clock steam whistle, which was blown from the Ephrata Borough Electric Light Plant on Church Street, are all on display. A children’s room includes a guessing game to help youngsters identify a toaster, a celery vase, a form for knitting stockings, and a boot jack

from the past. Another room is dedicated to local industries, including saddle making, printing, dairy processing, and cigar making. One display recalls a radio station that operated on the square in Ephrata into the 1980s. Next door in the William and Jemima Brossman Library, information is available on area genealogy, deeds, and more. “ We have microfiche available, digital searching, and an old-fashioned card catalog,” said Bender, who noted there is a nominal fee for nonmembers to use the library. Behind the Connell Mansion is a working print shop with the press from the Ephrata Cloister where Christmas cards and coasters are printed. More information about the museum and library may be found at www.cocalico valleyhs.org. The print shop’s website is www.conestoga press.com.

Car Show Will Focus On Muscle BY ANN MEAD ASH

Part of the fun of owning an antique, vintage, or classic car is having a story to tell about that vehicle. Greg Dyer, who has been a head judge at the New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show for 30 years, has a story about his 1963 Thunderbird, and his grandson Harry Townsend has a story to go with his 1987 Dodge D150 pickup. Both cars will be featured on the dash plaque for the 2021 car show, which will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Hol-

land, on Sunday, July 11. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. According to organizer Steve Loewen, the theme of the show will be “1970-71 Muscle Cars.” “Those are the pinnacle years for muscle cars,” said Loewen. “We are calling it the Muscle Car Era.” Dyer and Townsend worked together to restore both the Thunderbird and the truck. Dyer first saw the Thunderbird as a middle school student when it was owned by the father of a classmate. “Years later, I worked with the guy who owned it. His sons had torn it apart, so when I bought it there was no engine, See Car Show pg 4

Kaufhold explained that at the Olympics, archery competitors shoot from a standard 70 meters. “The qualification round is 72 arrows, and each arrow is worth a possible 10 points,” she said. The 64 archers are divided into brackets based on their scores to compete against each other. “There are also team rounds,” said Kaufhold, noting that a mixed team will include a man and a woman with each shooting two arrows in rotation. Three-person teams compete as well. The left-handed Kaufhold uses a Hoyt Olympic recurve bow. She described the sections of the bow, noting that the riser connects all the pieces together and the stabilizers add weight. A spotting scope allows her to see where arrows are going so she can adjust for conditions, such as wind. “I can look through the scope and fix things,” she said. Looking beyond Tokyo, Kaufhold has plans to focus on her senior year at CVHS. “I will take a lighter competition season in the fall and winter,” she said, adding that she hopes to complete both semesters in person. “Senior year is important, and I haven’t had a full year in school,” she noted. After graduation, she is considering a career that involves a point-

ed instrument reminiscent of an arrow, but much smaller. “I picked up sewing during the lockdown, and I really enjoy it,” shared Kaufhold. “I make my own clothing sometimes, and I have made things for friends and family.” She is considering a future as a seamstress, tailor, or fashion buyer.

More than 100 people took part in Eye Drop 2019 to raise money and awareness for VisionCorps.

Natanya Sortland will take part in Eye Drop 2021, rappelling down the side of the Holiday Inn in Lancaster.

Sortland said she is committed to the feat despite her fear of heights as part of an effort to raise funds and awareness for VisionCorps after the nonprofit organization helped her when she became visually impaired. Sortland’s vision was damaged after she suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a condition that often results in death or significant impairments. “I became visually disabled a couple of years ago. (As a consequence), I was cutting my fingers, burning my hands and I almost got hit by a car. I could not read emails or pay bills,” said Sortland, whose coordinator of care recommended that she contact VisionCorps for help. “I was really lucky that I finally gave VisionCorps a call. They gave me a caseworker and I told her about all the things that I was struggling with. She said that I would be OK and get my independence back and (find) a new way to live.” VisionCorps helped Sort-

Someone taught me to use my cane not only at home, but anywhere I needed to go. They offered me the world,” she stated. “If I can’t figure out how to do something, they can help me.” The Eye Drop was canceled in 2020 during the pandemic, but in 2019 120 people took part in the event, some with vision loss and some sighted, according to Carol Gifford, VisionCorps community relations specialist. “(Eye Drop) is run by a group of professionals,” Gifford noted. “They are in charge of making sure the entire process is safe.” Although Sortland’s limited vision is blurry, she will be aware of the building’s height. “The first time the event came around, I said, ‘No way,’ but (this year) I realized that I have to do this because I need to make sure that other people get this help,” said Sortland. Sortland plans to dress as Lady Liberty since the event is close to the July 4 holiday and to represent her newly independent life. “I will not (back out),” she said. “My determination to get help (to the people who need it) will be stronger than my fear.” People who would like to financially support Sortland’s effort may visit https://give.visioncorps.net/n atanya for more information. VisionCorps’ Eye Drop event will be held at the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. During 2020, the amphitheater at Long’s Park sat empty. For 2021, Dave Wauls, president of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation, is looking forward to filling the venue with eight different bands. “Everybody is excited, and we anticipate bigger crowds,” said Wauls, who noted that the food trucks will be back for hungry concertgoers. Concerts are planned beginning Sunday, July 11. Performances will start at 7:30 p.m. each Sunday through Aug. 29. Brad Zuke, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that each year the group endeavors to bring acts that represent a wide range of musical genres. In 2020, many of the bands that were booked to play just happened to be fronted by women. “It looked like it was going to be the year of the woman,” noted Zuke. “When everything was canceled, agents and bands wrote back and said, ‘Can we just move ahead to next year?’ That was our starting point (in creating this year’s schedule).” Indeed, only The Big Takeover, a reggae band scheduled to perform on Aug. 1, was not on the 2020 roster. Zuke noted that contracting bands to play the venue can take several years. He listed scheduling factors for both the performer and the amphitheater, along with travel arrangements and current visas for the performers. “Several years ago, we had Old Blind Dogs from Scotland

(play a concert),” he said. “It took us six years to finally have them perform here.” This year, the opening concert on July 11 will feature Bakithi Kumalo, a South African bass player who was one of the top session musicians in his country when Paul Simon went there to develop his album “Graceland” in 1985. “Simon invited him to America to finish studio sessions,” said Zuke of the Grammy Award-winning Kumalo, who eventually settled in the U.S. Both Maggie Rose, who will perform on July 18, and Thornetta Davis, who will perform on July 25, are award-winning artists. “Maggie is amazing,” stated Zuke, who noted that Rose makes her home in Nashville. “You don’t typically think of funk, soul, blues, and rock in terms of the Grand Ole Opry,” he noted, adding that Rose has appeared there many times. Davis, a recipient

of several Detroit Music Association awards, is known as that city’s Queen of the Blues. Additional August concerts will include Southern country singer Paul Thorn on Aug. 8. Vanessa Collier, who will play on Aug. 15, has received blues music awards as an instrumentalist for horn, but Zuke noted that she also plays guitar and sings. He stated that the Kenny Rogers Band, which will appear on Aug. 22, is the real deal. “(These) are the musicians that played with Kenny as opposed to being a cover band. These guys helped write the music and played the original music,” he said. On Aug. 29, a Live Aid Tribute Show will celebrate one of the world’s biggest concerts by featuring talented local musicians. Readers who would like to know more about the concerts, which will follow current health protocols, may visit www.longspark.org.

Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager at Occupational Development Center (ODC), is just a little biased when he talks about the coffee he and other staff members chose to be ODC’s selection from Wanderlust Coffees. “It’s just a really good coffee - not too strong, not weak,” said Mueller, who now purchases the coffee beans in five-pound bags. “It’s the only coffee I drink now. It is so good.” Mueller explained that the coffee is offered through a partnership with Wanderlust, which is run from a roasting facility on North Christian Street in Lancaster, by Timm, Kristina, and Thaniel Wenger. Before COVID-19, Timm was overseeing a business that provided walking tours of ethnic restaurants in the city. “They had to shut (the tours) down due to COVID-19 (restrictions),” recalled

Mueller. “They decided to get into coffee roasting, and to partner with area nonprofits,” he added, noting that ODC was among the first nonprofits contacted by Wanderlust. Half a dozen ODC staff members taste-tested three coffee blends provided by Wanderlust. “We chose the one we wanted, and we chose the name,” said Mueller. Grounds for Success became Wanderlust’s ODC signature coffee. “The idea is that we get a blend that is exclusively ours, and we get 20% of the sales from it.” The tagline “It gets the job done.” was added to the name. According to Mueller, Grounds for Success comes in a 12-ounce size, a five-packet gift size, and the five-pound bag he prefers. The coffee also comes in a variety of grinds. Mueller purchases whole beans because he grinds the beans himself, but choices also include coarse for a French press or cold brew,

medium-coarse ground, for pour-over or reusable pods, medium for classic drip coffee, and fine for espresso. Several shipping options are available as well. “We have had (client) family members pick it up at ODC,” said Mueller. He added that the coffee makes a great gift. “It has a really pleasant smooth taste,” he noted. ODC, located at 640 Martha

Ave., Lancaster, has been helping individuals with developmental disabilities gain the skills to do productive work for more than 70 years. Law Firm Opens New Main Office Attorneys Chad Rankin and William Gregory, partners and cofounders of Rankin & Gregory dba RG Injury Law recently announced that their personal injury law firm has opened a new main office at 1476 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. The new office offers easy access from Routes 30, 283 and 222 and from Lancaster city. It also provides space for safely serving injured clients while adhering to COVID-19 and post-pandemic safety measures. The new office offers ample space to accommodate physically distanced meetings, an air purification system and enhanced professional CDCrecommended cleaning and sterilization procedures to ensure that the legal staff and clients remain safe even after the pandemic ends. Rankin & Gregory opened its first office, in Rohrerstown at 2173 Embassy Drive, Lan-

caster, in January 2014. The legal team at Rankin & Gregory will also continue to meet with clients at its former headquarters office on Embassy Drive as well as its offices at 342 E. Main St., Leola, which opened in 2015, and 357 Locust St., Suite 100, Columbia, which opened in 2019, shortly before the pandemic caused businesses to temporarily serve clients through fully-online services. The 10,000-square-foot Lititz Pike building underwent a transformation from its previous use by a clothing store. This location houses an accessible reception area, 15 offices, three conference rooms, three bathrooms, a copy center and a kitchenette staff room. Calabrese Good Architects (CGA) designed the project and served as general contractor. Visitors will experience spe-

cial design touches upon entering the new Lititz Pike office. The reception area features a floor-to-ceiling wooden wall, a glass-walled interior showcasing a centralized conference room and a traditional iron chandelier. Pennsylvanian artisan Bradlyn Zimmerman, owner of The Ole Wood Shack in Shippensburg, was involved in the renovation project. Zimmerman custom-crafted the new office’s main conference room table and credenza with live-edge kiln-dried slabs of wood using wood from locally-sourced black walnut trees. To learn more, visit www.rginjurylaw.com, call 717-656-5000, email help@rginjurylaw.com or chat 24/7 through the aforementioned website. Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state. Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s

121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to mid-September. Many of these beaches have a swim-at-your-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road. Lancaster County Cruisers will host its 21st annual car show on Saturday, July 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This rain-or-shine event will take place at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street. There are no rules regarding age, make, or model. “Bring anything,” said club vice president Jack Parke, adding that vehicles do not need to be operational. There is a cost to exhibit a vehicle, with a discount for those who register before the event. Spectators will be admitted free of charge, but they are asked to bring nonperishable food items for the Solanco Neighborhood

Ministries food bank. A portion of the proceeds from entrance fees will also go to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. Dash plaques will be given to the first 150 entries. All the door and cash prizes are reserved for nonmembers. “We have loads of trophies, cash prizes, and tons of door prizes,” Parke remarked. There will be a DJ, and food vendors will sell burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, fruit cups, and beverages. The Lancaster County Cruisers club has been around since 1994 and welcomes new members. For more information about the club or the car show, readers may call Parke at 717786-3923 or Ed Caskey at 717808-8606.
