A change for life
Mentors needed for after-school program
Jonathan
Barrett, executive director of Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), shared the story of a student who came out of her shell - both metaphorically and, in a sense, literally - when she took part in the organization’s mentorship program called Rooted. “When she arrived, she kept her hood up all the time,” recalled Barrett. “After a month, she took the hood down so we could see her face.”
Barrett reported that the student was angry with the Lord and that she would write letters to her mentor about things she was struggling with. The mentor was patient and caring with the student. “By the end of the school year, she was open to Jesus,” said Barrett. “She was crying because she didn’t want the program to end.”
That type of relationship building is what Barrett hopes to continue to see as Rooted prepares to kick off at the beginning of the school year. “You see the difference it makes
when you invest in young people,” said Barrett. Rooted is open to fourth- and fifth-grade students at Leola Elementary School. Students, who may be referred by guidance counselors or parents, are transported from the school to the CVCCS location at 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, each Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. from September through May. Each program opens with a healthy
snack followed by one-on-one time with a mentor to unwind and talk about the day. “We play a group game,” said Barrett. “Then there’s a Bible lesson which has been prepared (for the mentor to teach).” The sessions end with a one-on-one game.
According to Barrett, ideal mentors are good listeners, and they are engaged and compassionate. Retired
Taking a swing against poverty
BY ANN MEAD ASHMore than 25 years ago, HOPE International, a Christ-centered global nonprofit that equips men and women to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their community, gave out its first micro loan in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Just recently, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, recounted the story of a Ukrainian blueberry farmer named Anastasiya. “Anastasiya decided not to let the war cause her to leave, which is a big deal,” said Rutt. “She had gotten a loan from HOPE prewar for seedlings for her blueberry farm, and in 2022, she

people who have time to share the wisdom of their years often make good mentors. “There’s no tutoring involved and no homework,” stated Barrett. “We basically (provide) the lessons.” Volunteer mentors are offered orientation training.
One mentor left the program because she decided to remain active in the life of the student she was mentoring after that student
aged out of the program. Barrett was sad to lose the mentor but overall happy with the result. “We want life change,” he explained. “We don’t want to just maintain. We want a change for life.”
Readers who are interested in volunteering to be mentors may sign up at www.cvccs.org/mentors. Individuals who have specific questions may call 717-208-3711.
Woman of many talents
BY ANN MEAD ASHDore’Ann Weaver has always had artistic talents. Over the years, those skills have expanded into a variety of areas, including costume and set design and construction and painting a scrim backdrop the size of a gymnasium floor. However, Dore’Ann was a little unsure of exactly how to use those talents when she received a call in July of 2022 asking her to serve as art director for a DBM Films production called “Little Heroes.” “I said, ‘I am from theater. What does that mean?’” recalled Dore’Ann. Fortunately, her friend Robert Amaya, who played
the Snake King in the movie “Courageous,” was able to provide background information.
“Little Heroes” focuses on four young friends who discover something is not right at their usual swimming hole. They soon uncover a mystery that involves a local factory owner and the mayor. The movie was filmed in Chesapeake City, Md., and North East, Md., over a 12-day period. A premiere was held in Baltimore on June 8 and on June 9, the film was shown again as part of a celebration in Chesapeake City. “Little Heroes” can be purchased from DBM Films or on Amazon.

was able to secure a second loan for irrigation to increase her crop.” Last year, Anastasiya and her family harvested their first blueberry crop. HOPE has given out a total of $1.2 million in Ukraine since the war began.
HOPE recently surpassed $1.6 billion in micro loans with the goal of restoring dignity in families’ lives. To raise funds to reach such goals, HOPE holds a yearly golf tournament. This year’s fundraiser will take place in three locations: Turf Valley Resort, Ellicott City, Md., at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14; Iron Valley Golf Club, Lebanon, on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.; and Wyncote Golf Club, Oxford, on Sept. 15 at 8 a.m. Those who wish to register to play or who want to provide a sponsorship may do so at
www.hopeinternational.org
/golf by Friday, Sept. 1.
Rutt emphasized that HOPE focuses on all domains, not just the material but also personal, social, and spiritual. “It’s exciting to see what God can do through what He puts in the hands of the clients we serve around the world,” he said, adding that as the war in Ukraine continues to rage, HOPE continues to offer loans in that country and pray with clients. “God is working,” said Rutt. “We see more and more people coming to Christ through interaction with our teams and the churches even through the destruction and disillusionment of the war,” he said, adding that many people who had no interest in spiritual discussions prior to the war want to pray with the HOPE team. “I believe it will have an impact on the generations to come,” he said. Rutt pointed out that before the war, 5.5% of Ukrainians lived below the poverty line. That number is now at 24%, and it
is estimated that it could take a decade for the Ukrainian economy to recover.
Sarah Smith, content and media writer for HOPE International, said that the HOPE approach offers a sustainable way to alleviate poverty and positively impact a community. “When someone takes out a loan or is saving money and starts a business, they start employing other people in the community,” she noted.
Rutt added that sustainability is the reason HOPE has always avoided simply giving handouts to those in need. “We believe we can get to a longer-lasting solution through allowing people to use the gifts that God put in our hands. We are interested in restoring dignity, not creating dependency.” To continue to make that happen, Rutt has set a goal of raising $1.5 million toward HOPE’s total budget of $36 million through the golf tournament. “It all happens through partnerships and sponsorships,” he said. “Contact us and help drive out poverty.”

The City of Lancaster is seeking a qualified artist or artist team for the commission of a sidewalk mosaic in a hardscaped courtyard to be located on the southeast side of the Plum Street roundabout.
The City of Lancaster Department of Public Works plans to install a permanent roundabout at the intersection of North Plum and East New streets and Park Avenue. A temporary roundabout is currently installed in its place. Construction will begin Wednesday, Aug. 30, and will be completed by June 2024.
The roundabout will be accompanied by a variety of amenities, including vegetated curbing, street trees and other foliage, a hardscaped courtyard, street furniture, and public art in the form of a sidewalk mosaic. The city is
seeking an artist to complete the 40-square-foot mosaic to be installed in the concrete of the courtyard.
The city is committed to creating opportunities for local artists, be it through commissioned works or by facilitating learning opportunities for skill development. Artists are preferred to reside in or near Lancaster city, although non-local artists are also welcome to apply, particularly those who have experience working with emerging artists. Non-local artists will be asked to provide hands-on experience to one local artist throughout the artistic process.
Selection will take place using a two-phase process. A selection committee will first review applications submitted through the request for qualification. Up to three finalists will be selected by the committee. Finalists will then be invited to complete phase two of the selection process, which will include the final design proposal. Final design proposals will be reviewed by the Public Art Advisory Board.
The deadline to submit proposals is Monday, July 17. For more details, go to www.cityoflancasterpa.gov.
Fraktur workshop posted
Mennonite Life will present a hands-on exploration of the Pennsylvania German art of fraktur on Friday, July 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. Under the guidance of fraktur artist Emily Smucker-Beidler, participants will learn what birds influenced the art form’s earliest nature motifs, as well as the history behind its characteristic polka-dot, checkerboard and striped patterns. Each participant will create his or her own 5-by-7-inch fanciful fraktur bird.
The workshop will be held in the Mennonite Life Community Room, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, and a fee will be charged per person. Participants may bring their own watercolors or purchase a set for a fee at the workshop. All other materials will be included, with enough to take home for continued creation.
Preregistration is required, and class capacity is limited. Register by Tuesday, July 25, at www.mennonitelife.org/events.
Fraktur was created by Pennsylvania Germans in the 18th century and features calligraphic text decorated with colorful birds, hearts and flowers. The tradition is rooted in the illuminated manuscripts of medieval Europe but has evolved into a distinctive part of local Pennsylvania German culture.
Attendees will create their own 5-by-7-inch drawing of a fraktur bird.

Dore’Ann grew up in Nashville, Tenn., where her parents were friends with set designers. As the daughter of a pastor and music director, she was involved in live church productions. After moving to Ephrata when she was 13, Dore’Ann worked on painting the set for Ephrata High School’s production of “Oklahoma!” “I learned (so much) from being part of that,” said Dore’Ann, who temporarily shelved her love of theater to work in the optical business. She rediscovered that passion after she married her husband, Craig, and the two became involved in the Ephrata Church of the Nazarene’s productions. In 1994, she and Craig built the front of a church in a barn, and she painted a huge stained-glass window perched on scaffolding while expecting her first child.
Around 2012, she began sewing costumes for Cavod Community Theatre productions. Dore’Ann first became involved after her son Alex won a part in “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” directed by Stan Deen. “I am a shopper whom you can give a dime to, and I will make it look like I spent $1,000,” said Dore’Ann. “I am able to tear
things apart and put them back together.” To prove her talents to Deen, she created a Glenda the Good Witch costume for less than $20 in two days. Looking back, Dore’Ann credits Deen for giving her the confidence to succeed at her craft. “Stan always brought the best out in us,” she said.
In 2018, the Weaver family moved to Stoudtburg Village in Adamstown, where Dore’Ann opened French Twist Events, planning to host tea parties, murder mystery dinner parties, bridal showers, and more, but the business was just getting started when COVID-19 restrictions hit. Undaunted, Dore’Ann went to work on local productions, including Lancaster Bible College’s “Ruth” and “Queen Esther” at Sight & Sound, and she painted sets for Servant Stage.
Dore’Ann’s heart is to see family-friendly movies made locally. “Amaya is working with state legislators to bring more film (production) into the state of Pennsylvania,” she said, noting she has joined in his efforts. “(Amaya) recognizes that we have a very rich area to make films,” she noted, pointing out the talent available in the local area.
