Vintage cars on parade
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Onthe afternoon of July 22, the weather smiled on Fairmount, a retirement community comprising two campuses perched on the high ground where Cat’s Back Road traverses between Farmersville and Hinkletown. About 25 classic and vintage vehicles parked near the entrance at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. More than 30 residents crowded under the portico of the front door waiting for a parade of vehicles, while others strolled the parking lot taking in the sights, which ranged from a Chevrolet Fleetwood from the 1940s to a later-model Mustang.
The cars were brought to the venue by members of the Axle Snappers Inc. Car Club, a group of nearly 20 car enthusiasts who meet monthly. The car show was first suggested by Fairmount resident Abe Witmer, a one-time Studebaker owner, who mentioned the idea to Colleen Hurst, one of Fairmount’s

Kathy Baker, who oversees the LuoPad ministry at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in New Holland, has an unusual request. “We are asking the community to donate gently used towels,” said Baker, who has already asked parish members for donations. “They can be any size towels, hand towels, or washcloths,” she continued. “We can’t use bathmats because they are too thick.”
Baker is seeking the towels for a group of about a dozen women who meet at the church, 150 Water St.,

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is always active, always evolving, always moving forward.
A national initiative designed to support the development of girls in the third through eighth grades with physical activities like running, GOTR has a mission that is seasonal in nature. On the heels of a successful spring campaign, the Lancaster chapter of GOTR is currently gearing up for its 10-week fall season, which will get underway on Monday, Sept. 11.
In addition, Girls on the Run
recently assigned new positions and responsibilities to employees Jennifer West and Kylie Homan.
“While Girls on the Run has two seasons, it is a year-round effort to ensure the success of each season,” said West, GOTR’s new executive director. “As a staff, it’s our responsibility to set up our coaches for success. Then it all starts again. We’re always thinking of how we can engage the community more. We know how important it is for girls to have a safe place to land.”
Registration for GOTR’s fall campaign will run from Thursday, See GOTR pg 3

Lancaster General Health - in partnership with Community Services Group (CSG) and Pequea Valley School District, will offer a free Youth Mental Health First Aid Training on Friday, Aug. 11. The program will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Factory Ministries, 3293 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. This training is designed to teach family members, teachers, school staff members, neighbors, health and human services workers, and others how to help someone ages 12 to 18 who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or crisis.
During this training, participants will learn how to identify common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; recognize common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges; and interact with a child or adolescent in crisis and connect him or her with help.
The training is part of the Mental Health First Aid Community Collaborative, which is supported by a grant to Lancaster General Hospital from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The grant supports 100% of the project costs, budgeted for five years at $125,000 per year.
The grant provides mental health training for adults and youths through the Mental Health First Aid training, an evidence-based program that provides skills and resources necessary to recognize and address mental illness, improve pathways to services, and help to reduce the stigma around mental health.

GOTR frompg 1
Aug. 10, through Friday, Sept. 15. The season will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 19, with GOTR’s inclusive and celebratory 5K run at Millersville University.
“My job is to ensure our program is up and running so we can serve as many girls in the county as possible,” said Homan, GOTR’s new program director. “It’s about establishing our coaches so they can facilitate the program. Running is a component of our program, not a requirement. In each of the lessons, there are physical activity or games. We are encouraging girls to keep moving, based on the ability they bring each day.”
GOTR officials hope to make their program available through every school district in Lancaster County, an initiative that will depend upon the availability of volunteer coaches. There is a cost associated with the program, and financial aid is available.
In the spring, GOTR involved 900 Lancaster County girls, thanks in part to the time and effort committed by 380 volunteer coaches.
“Because they’re all volunteer coaches, it’s almost like starting fresh each season,” said West. “We rely on coaches
coming back to coach the girls. We’re looking for positive role models to show kindness and compassion to the girls.”
“We are really focusing on reaching out to the community for coaches of all shapes, sizes and ethnicity,” added West. “It’s really important for the girls to look into the coaches and see themselves. There aren’t really restrictions on who can be a coach, except that you must be in at least the ninth grade.”
West, who co-founded the Lancaster-Lebanon chapter of Girls on the Run in 2009, replaced Katie Sandoe as the program’s executive director. This past spring, GOTR served its 20,000th participant.
“We knew Lancaster County was going to be so accepting of the program,” said West. “Girls on the Run is

Gap Relief Sale will celebrate 75th anniversary
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The annual Gap Relief Sale will be held on Friday, Aug. 11, and Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The fundraising event will include auctions, hot meals and live music, and the proceeds will support the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).
On Friday, the auction preview and pork roast dinner will begin at 4 p.m. The preview will be open until 6:30 p.m., and meals will be available to purchase for eat-in or takeout until 7 p.m. From 6:30 to 7:15 p.m., a member of MCC will speak alongside a special offering, followed by group singing. The auction will officially kick off at 7:15 p.m.
On Saturday, the event will begin with a country breakfast that will consist of pancakes, sausages and eggs. After breakfast, auctions will begin at various times in each of the buildings at the fairgrounds.
In block one, a household item and craft auction will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by a large furniture auction at 11 a.m.
Special items to commemorate
the 75th anniversary of the sale will be available to bid on at noon, including a large quilt ornamented with the Gap Relief Sale logo. At 1 p.m., quilts and quilted wall decorations will be up for bids. In block two, farm equipment and workshop tools will be among the items auctioned off at 9 a.m. In block three, a sale of children’s items will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by an auction of lawn furniture, shrubbery and other outdoor items. New Holland, the last three Thursdays of each month in the morning. The group creates LuoPads, washable, reusable feminine hygiene pads, for Unto, an organization that provides humanitarian aid to developing countries. Unto has a Global Logistics Center in Mount Joy.
“This is our little workshop,” said Baker, gesturing around the room at the church where volunteers were hard at work creating the pads. Baker explained that the kits the women complete include about six finished pads, a washcloth, two
pairs of underwear, and more in a bag. Pads come in large, medium, and small sizes, and each is completed with a snap. “Unto labels them and ships them by the skid.
(LuoPads are) the most requested item from Unto,” noted Baker Baker explained that each pad begins when the form is traced on a towel and cut out before being shipped back to Unto for sewing.
When the pieces are returned to the group, the outside is created from flannel and stuffed with the towel piece. “Then we sew all the way
available to purchase, including subs and pulled pork. From 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., a bounce house and barrel train rides will be available to children.
The first sale was held at the farm of Leon Summers in Gap. The event was created by locals who wished to support MCC, and it was held every other year until 1990, when it became an annual event. The sale changed locations multiple times before permanently relocating to the Solanco Fairgrounds.
All of the event’s proceeds
will benefit MCC, which is headquartered in Akron. MCC is an international ministry of Anabaptist churches that acquires resources for the purpose of offering relief to communities around the globe that are in need. The special offering on Friday will be used to fund MCC’s relief efforts in Ukraine.
The items that will be available during the sale have all been donated by individuals and local businesses. Among the items is a restored 1951 Farmall tractor, provided by Double H Tractor Service in Ephrata.
“The sale gives the local community an easy way to support MCC while acquiring something you might need,” said Levi Glick, who is helping to coordinate the event.
To donate an item for the auction, interested parties may call 717-617-9746 to arrange for drop-off or pickup.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 31 @ NOON LOCATED AT: 1398 Pleasantview Rd., Ephrata, PA 17522
DIRECTIONS: From Rt. 322 outside of Lincoln, turn NE on Hackman Rd. Go 1 mile to right turn on Spook Lane, to first buildings on the right.
HOUSE LISTING: An outstanding 102-acre beef/chicken/crop farm. Mostly square plotting, some of the best soil anywhere on the highly productive farm. Beautiful historic Limestone farmhouse dates back to 1764, has desirable 24’x13’ eat-in kitchen w/seating area; 23’x13’ living/ dining room; family room; storage room; ML laundry; mud room; 5 bedrooms; 1.5 bathrooms; beautiful stamped concrete patio; un-improved basement; oil furnace; updated windows; on-site septic.
ANIMAL BUILDINGS: Working chicken broiler house (Tyson contract) is 500’x44’ (max 29,000 birds) w/(2) 24-ton feed bins; 30-KW solar panels; steer barn has loafing area for 165-head beef; 20’x 60’ Harvestor silo (shelled corn unloader), (2) 18’x70’ concrete silos; 10’x55’ concrete solo; Rissler feed mixer; bunk feeder; 85-KW generator w/Cummins diesel engine serves the entire farm; (2) good water wells (tied together) w/UV lights.

Clay Twp.; Ephrata S.D. This working farm is in Ag. Preserve and the Clean-Green program so taxes are only approx. $8,000.
AUCTIONEER NOTE: Truly a rare opportunity to buy one of the last original large working farms in the area. Approx. 95-acres are tillable. Fields are basically level but the rich limestone top-soil drains very well and grows tremendous crops. Provides diverse income for financial stability. Our understanding is the farm could be split in two parcels because it is over 100-acres. Ask your Attorney to see if this would work for you if wanted/needed. This farm needs nothing and is capable to start paying for itself the first day you own it.

BRIEF TERMS: $300,000 down payment day of auction, balance in 75 days. Attorney Tony Schimaneck 717-299-5251. Crops are reserved from the auction. Farm will be sold by the acre x 102.

activity coordinators. Colleen quickly turned to her father, car club member Wilmer Hurst, who helped her to organize the show, which began at 1 p.m. At a little after 2 p.m., the cars began to move in tandem to form a parade that looped under the portico and around the grounds, making two passes by the gathering of residents.
“We are the second-oldest car club in the United States,” said Wilmer, noting that one older group exists in California. “We were established back in 1953.” Original club members included Bill Schlote and Ron Mummal. The initial membership consisted of men who liked to race cars. Members named the club the “Axle Snappers Custom Car Club,” and the group met at Wilworth’s garage, just East of Hinkletown on Route 322. Building and racing dragsters were among the first activities, and in 1959 the club’s flathead dragster set a national record and captured a national championship.
Currently, the nonprofit Axle Snappers Club is open to new members. “Our older members are getting older and with the younger members coming in, we changed our rules a bit to adapt for the younger generation with different cars,” explained Wilmer, who noted that the requirement that club members own American-made cars
was recently dropped. The club meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Elks Lodge 1933, 170 Akron Road, Ephrata. “We all love cars of all makes and models,” said Wilmer. “We strive to promote the car hobby. We assist with and attend local car shows.”
Individuals interested in joining the club should call 717-413-8236 before attending a meeting. More information about the Axle Snappers may be found at http://axlesnappers carclub.com.
