Family … flowers … fun
BY ANN MEAD ASHEmily Rivera and her older sister, Allison, love to create chalk drawings in their driveway. The J.E. Fritz students have a goal of covering the driveway with chalk drawings. Before a recent rainstorm, they had drawn 73 figures on the driveway. “Every time it rains, we start over and try to do more than we did last time,” explained Allison, who is going into fifth grade.
BY ANN MEAD ASHInthe fall of 2023, the nearly 60 members of the Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) marching band will all be moving “In the Grid”not the usual gridiron on the football field, however. “In the Grid” is the title of the band’s fall drill, w hich will take band members metaphorically into a computer and out again.
Band members who practiced the drill the week of Aug. 7 through 11, began the day with stretching exercises in the parking lot before working to master the steps set to
original music. Students practiced from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day except Friday when they met from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then enjoyed a pool party later in the day. The band is directed by Aaron Magaro.
Drum major Katarina Lingo described the show as concept-driven rather than character-driven, noting that the theme is based on delving into a digital world where there is no life. Along with Jacquelyn Kelley, unit major of wind instruments and color guard, and Dana Brieck,
percussion major in charge of front ensemble and drumline, Lingo discussed how the four movements - called “circuits”take band members from a cohesive unit to isolation and then return them to unity. Brieck said that the color guards are the protagonists, so they remain unified throughout the show. Lingo called the final movement an “escape link.” Instruments that will be featured include the saxophone and mellophones, along with trumpets.
A trumpet solo by Micah Hoover
will stand out in the second movement. “It’s really pretty,” said Lingo of the solo. “It shows how lonely it is (in the computer).” Pit percussion members will be featured in the beginning and near the end of the show, and duos and trios of guard members may perform together. Kelley showed enthusiasm for the drill, noting, “There’s a lot of room for choreography.”
In addition to performing at CVHS home and away football games, the band will take part in a number of competitions, including events at CVHS on Saturday, Sept. 16; one at Eastern York High School on

Emily, who will be a third-grader this year, recently won accolades for a more permanent type of drawing that she submitted to the Royer’s Flowers & Gifts Kids Club birthday design contest. Emily’s design of three flowers in a vase with the greeting “Have a beautiful birthday” was the winner of this year’s competition. Her card will be sent electronically to all Kids Club members, who can then print it out and bring it to their nearest Royer’s to receive a free balloon. Emily, who received a bouquet including yellow and white daisies, baby’s breath, and red carnations, has followed in Allison’s footsteps in winning the competition. Allison’s design of white daisies on a pink background with the greeting “Have a flower-tastic birthday” won the 2022 competition.
Although Emily’s favorite subject is math, she said having the opportunity to be creative in making the card was the best part of entering the competition. “I had to look at a vase because I had never drawn one like that before,” said Emily, who examined one of her mom’s Mother’s Day cards to get a better idea. She chose flower shapes she was familiar with to put in the vase and created a background to resemble blobs of paint on a wall.

Landis Valley to reopen historic house
Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum will reopen the ground floor of the 1815 Brick Farm House on Friday, Sept. 1. The building has been closed for repairs, and the project was delayed due to the museum’s pandemic closure and issues with contracting.
The interior work included re-securing historic ceiling plaster to its lath, repairing water damage to walls, and painting all of the walls and
woodwork. New exhibit panels tell the story of the generations of the Landis family that lived in the house as well as other facets of life in Landis Valley. In addition, the front porch was rebuilt, and the rain gutters were replaced.
Prior to the building’s closure, it could only be viewed during a tour or when staffed. The house will now reopen as a self-guided building.

Serving the community
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen Jon Barrett and his wife, Sarah, moved back to Pennsylvania from New York during the pandemic, the couple prayed about finding a new church for Jon to pastor.
“I was looking for a church with a small, homey feeling,” Jon recalled. “My wife and I were praying about it, and the opportunity came up the first day I started looking.”
That opportunity was a position as executive director of the nonprofit Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), which then alerted Jon to an open position as pastor at Grace Community Fellowship in Manheim.
Jon began preaching at Grace earlier this year and took over as pastor July 1. He continues to serve at both the church and CVCCS, noting that both jobs focus on helping people in the community.
“CVCCS is an amazing ministry,” he said. “It’s completely Jesus-focused. It’s focused on the transformation of people, not just providing services, but wanting to see people thrive and become selfsufficient.” CVCCS operates a food and clothing bank, provides ministry programs for youths and offers financial literacy programs, among
other initiatives.
At Grace, Jon is also focused on serving the community.
“I think it’s so important these days that people have a place they can come and feel connected to other people,” he stated. “Loneliness is a big issue, and people have gotten really isolated, especially after the pandemic. There is no substitute for personal interaction, and a lot of people are suffering from lack of community.”
That’s his top goal for Grace - to be a welcoming space for anyone.
“I want our community to know that we are a safe space for biblical truth,” he remarked.
“I want them to feel a family atmosphere and to know that they can rely on us. When people come to us, I want it to have the feeling of coming home.”
Jon, the father of two young adult daughters, said he sees his role in the church as a parental one.
“My passion is discipleship,” he explained. “I believe in being a spiritual father of sorts to people to help them as they grow in their faith. I want to see the church thrive.”
He cautions that while he wants Grace to continue to succeed in its ministry, he’s focused on growing the church organically.
“There are no gimmicks,” he
said. “We just want to welcome people who love the Lord and want to see the church thrive.”
He said people who come to Grace can expect a straight-forward message.
“There’s no fluff when you come to hear the sermons,” he commented. “It’s solid, biblical truth, but it’s not too deep over the heads of people where they can’t get it. Today, people are really looking for the truth, and we just give it unapologetically.”

Author talk will explore the work of Menno Simons
Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will host a guest speaker event for its members on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. The event will feature presentations from author and Bluffton University professor Gerald Mast, who will explore the life and writings of Menno Simons and his role in the foundation of the modern-day Anabaptist church.
Simons was a Dutch priest who was born in the late 15th century. He was ordained in the Roman Catholic church circa 1515, but he began to question its teachings in the years following. One of Simons’ primary points of contention with the church was the concept of infant baptism, which he believed to have no basis in Scripture; he aligned with the Anabaptist movement and officially
departed from the Roman Catholic church in 1536. Simons became one of the most influential figures in the Dutch Anabaptist religion, resulting in the term Mennonite being derived from his first name.
Mast will detail Simons’ ideology and shed light on the experiences that influenced his teachings, including Simons’ concept of “true evangelical faith.” The concept revolves around a hopeful approach toward one’s neighbors, salvation and relationship with God. Mast will explain the five theological characteristics of Simons’ teaching: converting to Jesus Christ in a personally transformative way, confessing to Christ’s work through repentance, creating a covenant within the congregation through baptism, maintaining a community of peace and reconciliation, and serving as a witness against all violence and killing.
“I hope the audience
receives a strong appreciation for how Menno influenced the direction of the Mennonite church and a new curiosity about how his writings can help the church today,” Mast said.
In the Mennonite Life Community Room, audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions about Mast’s work, which includes a series of articles on the heritage of Pennsylvania Mennonites. Mast was inspired to write the series after he noticed that Simons’ writing possessed an eloquence that distinguished it from many other works within the religion. Mast was also fascinated by Simons’ decision to join the Anabaptist movement during a time when it had resorted to violent methods. Although more translations and editions of Simons’ work exist today than those of any other Anabaptist writer, Mast felt that it had been paid less attention in recent years.
During the event, attendees will have an opportunity to
view a 1681 edition of Simons’ writings in Dutch, which will be accompanied by an illustration by Jan Luyken. Luyken was an engraver who created the images found in “Martyr’s Mirror,” a book of stories that remains highly significant to both Mennonite and Amish communities today.
Mennonite Life members may attend the free event in person or via Zoom. For more information, visit www. mennonitelife.org/events.
Virtual workshop will teach tree pruning
Penn State Extension will offer a virtual workshop on how to correctly prune trees.
“Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts” will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from noon to 1 p.m. Branch failure can be caused by wind, ice, snow or a climber aloft. Such breakage can result in costly property damage, personal injury, power outages or blocked roads.
During the upcoming workshop, attendees will learn how tree branches deal with loading throughout the tree structure. There will
also be a discussion on the biology around why small cuts are better than larger cuts and the impacts of decay on wound closure after pruning.
The program is designed to benefit municipal managers, foresters and arborists, as well as others interested in urban and community forestry.
The webinar is free, but a fee may be associated with the following credits: Society of American Foresters (CFE), pending approval; International Society of Arboriculture; Certificate of Atten-
dance for Professionals and Others to Self-Report; and Peer Volunteer/Master Gardener Update Training.
The program is being presented by the Penn State Extension in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, State and Private Forestry; Pennsylvania DCNR, Bureau of Forestry; and Pennsylvania TreeVitalize Program, Pennsylvania Community Trees. To register, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ education-format/webinars and search for “Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts.”
She submitted her card on her birthday in mid-July. By July 27, the family had received a phone call letting them know that Emily had won. Usually, the winner has to wait until his or her next birthday to receive the flower delivery. When Allison won, she had to wait until October to receive her prize. But Royer’s representatives did not want Emily to have to wait nearly a year, so her flowers were delivered at the end of July.
In addition to math, Emily enjoys reading “Critter Club” books and “The Adventures of Sophie Mouse.” She is learning to play tennis and the piano.
Having won, both girls are glad they entered the competition, but their mom, Debbie, noted that winning was not the goal of entering. “We wanted them to enter to have the experience,” said Debbie. “They had not entered contests before.” Debbie and the girls’ father, Angel, made it
clear that there would only be one winner. “We let them know … to just do their best and have fun with it,” said Debbie.

ANIMAL BUILDINGS: Working chicken broiler house (Tyson contract) is 500’x44’ (max 29,000 birds) w/(2) 24-ton feed bins; 30-KW solar panels; steer barn has loafing area for 165-head beef; 20’x 60’ Harvestor silo (shelled corn unloader), (2) 18’x70’ concrete silos; 10’x55’ concrete solo; Rissler feed mixer; bunk feeder; 85-KW generator w/Cummins diesel engine serves the entire farm; (2) good water wells (tied together) w/UV lights.
STORAGE BUILDINGS: 88’x55’ steel equipment shed, 1 work bay has over-head door, concrete floor; older 60’x30 tobacco barn transformed into vehicle garage w/ finished lower level had small business w/office area. Clay Twp.; Ephrata S.D. This working farm is in Ag. Preserve and the Clean-Green program so taxes are only approx. $8,000.
AUCTIONEER NOTE: Truly a rare opportunity to buy one of the last original large working farms in the area. Approx. 95-acres are tillable. Fields are basically level but the rich limestone top-soil drains very well and grows tremendous crops. Provides diverse income for financial stability. Our understanding is the farm could be split in two parcels because it is over 100-acres. Ask your Attorney to see if this would work for you if wanted/needed. This farm needs nothing and is capable to start paying for itself the first day you own it.
OPEN HOUSE: Call/Text Auctioneer 717-587-8906.
BRIEF TERMS: $300,000 down payment day of auction, balance in 75 days. Attorney Tony Schimaneck 717-299-5251. Crops are reserved from the auction. Farm will be sold by the acre x 102. Please visit our website www.martinandrutt.com
