Fundraising tradition to continue
BY ANN MEAD ASH
In2020, Fairmount held its annual fundraising auction online to protect its residents and the general public from COVID-19. In 2021, the event moved from Fairmount to New Covenant Mennonite Church, 529 E. Farmersville Road, New Holland, where it will be held again this year on Saturday, Sept. 9. “New Covenant is a good fit in many ways,” said Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator. New Covenant offers enough space for the variety of activities associated with the event, including food, auctions, children’s activities, and more.
This year’s fundraiser, which benefits the Sharing Fund to aid Fairmount residents who have exhausted their finances, will kick off with a 6:30 a.m. breakfast including homemade doughnuts, stuffed French toast, eggs, and bacon. A flea market will open at 6:30 a.m. as well, and auction registration will
begin at 8 a.m. The silent auction, which will include Dining for Dollars meals donated by Fairmount staff and other donors, will open at 9 a.m.
Other items to be auctioned during the day will include theme baskets at 9:30 a.m., about 30 quilts at 10 a.m., and specialty items at 11:40 a.m. and
noon. Lawn furniture and plants will be sold at 12:30 p.m., and a special auction for children to participate in will be held at 1:45 p.m.
As in the past, a Burkholder tractor will go over the block, as well as a miniature quilt consisting of 468 pieces, made in Ireland by
College president to retire

Last spring, Megan Feveryear helped bring the “Clothed in Dignity” conference for women to the New Holland Church of the Nazarene. Now, Feveryear and a couple of well-known female musicians are planning a second conference, dubbed “For the Girl,” at the church, and Feveryear is brimming with excitement about the event. “We will try to wake up all these women super early and kick-start it with a time of worship with Cami Shrock,” said Feveryear, who noted that Shrock
is originally from New Holland, but later moved to Indianapolis and is now a CCM recording artist.
For the Girl, which is open to women of all ages, will be held at the New Holland Church of the Nazarene, 428 Ranck Road, New Holland, on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. There is a cost to attend the conference for all registered participants, with an added fee for an optional lunch.
According to Feveryear, worship with Shrock will be followed by Feveryear’s own presentation to the See For the Girl pg 2
Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences (PA College) has announced that president Mary Grace Simcox will retire as of Dec. 31.
Simcox is the first and only president of the college, and she was responsible for evolving the school from a degree-granting institute to an accredited college. She joined what is now PA College in 1997 as the dean of nursing for Lancaster Institute for Health Education (LIHE). Seven months later, she stepped into an interim role overseeing all of LIHE’s programs, and the position became permanent in 1998. Working with a small group of staff members and faculty, Simcox
led the evolution of LIHE to become the Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences in 2001.
In the years that followed, Simcox oversaw the addition of bachelor’s and graduate degree programs, building expansions, and a name change. She also led the college’s transition to its current campus in Lancaster, and with it, a change in philosophy that puts the learner at the center of the educational experience. Part of that transformation included adding The Center for Excellence in Practice, which is the college’s simulation center. The center includes more than 20,000 square feet of immersive, interdisciplinary, and hyper-realistic See College pg 5

gathering. “I will bring a message that I hope will impact some people,” she shared, adding that the morning will conclude with games that are suitable for people of all ages and are meant to get people up and moving around and talking with other attendees.
Following lunch, Ashton Brooke
Gill, an “American Idol” alumna, will lead music. “We will have breakout sessions,” continued Feveryear. “We will speak on a number of topics, including identity, your calling, your purpose, and life in general.” The afternoon session will conclude with more worship and a full-audience questionand-answer session. “We have everything timed out for a full day,” said Feveryear.
Feveryear, who is originally from New Holland, but now lives in Nashville, said that the previous conference in New Holland went so well that not only is this one planned, but also more events will be held in other areas. “Last year, it was just at New Holland, and they graciously offered to host again,” explained Feveryear, “but God opened doors to other places.” Those other places will include Christ Church, a large nondenominational church in Nashville, as well as another venue in LaGrange, Ky. “We are a little nervous, (but) we are excited to see what God has opened up and what He’s doing,” said Feveryear.
Women who wish to take part in the conference may register ahead of time by searching for “For the Girl Conference” at www.eventbrite.com. Individuals may also register at the church on the day of the event. More information about the conference may be found by searching for “For the Girl Conference” on Facebook.

clinical simulation space with 24 rooms, including an intensive care unit. It was engineered to feel natural and authentic to learners from all facets of health care, and it is the culmination of nearly a decade of planning and collaboration with experts in simulation education. Simcox also oversaw an affiliation with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LGH), providing clinical placement and tuition reimbursement for PA College students and LGH employees.
Additionally, Simcox led the college through three rounds of accreditation through the nationally-recognized Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), entailing a multi-year process intended to ensure both academic credibility and caliber of the college. During its last reaccreditation in 2021, PA College received 12 recognitions from MSCHE for the quality of its graduates, its health and wellness programming, the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Center for Excellence in Practice, and the health care core curriculum.
Simcox began her career in 1972 when she graduated with an associate degree in nursing from Gwynedd Mercy College. She worked as a registered nurse for several years on the medical-surgical floor and then the intensive care unit of Roxborough Memorial Hospital before accepting a teaching position with the Roxborough School of Nursing in 1979. She then became director of the school in 1985 and remained in that position until she joined LIHE in 1997. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Gwynedd Mercy College in 1978, her Master of Science in Nursing with a clinical nurse specialty in renal disease from the University of Pennsylvania in 1981, and her doctorate in higher education from Widener University in 1998.
Simcox has held leadership roles in a variety of professional organizations.
Her retirement precedes PA College’s merger with Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, set to be completed in January 2024. Through the merger, more than 20 of PA College’s nursing and allied health programs ranging from certificates through the doctoral level will be adopted by Saint Joseph’s academic portfolio.

Rebecca Gregory-Smith, greatgranddaughter of a woman who lived at Fairmount. The tiny handstitched quilt is the most recent in a line of samplers from Gregory-Smith dating back more than 15 years.
Foods traditionally sold at the event include chicken barbecue meals beginning at 10 a.m., french fries made on-site, and fry pies, which are similar to turnovers. Fresh-squeezed lemonade is a perennial favorite, and soft ice cream will be sold as will ground cherry pies.
Children’s activities, including rides, games, and prizes, will begin
at 9 a.m., and a candy drop from a helicopter will be held, weather permitting, at 10 a.m. Helicopter rides will be available for a set fee during the event.
According to Peter Passage, stewardship director at Fairmount, the 2022 auction netted $125,000 for the Sharing Fund, which was the goal for the event. This year, organizers would like to raise $130,000. The Sharing Fund provides more than $2.8 million yearly in care to Fairmount residents.

have hot dogs and a covered dish picnic and games (outside),” said Yuninger. “Anyone can come to that.” Additional upcoming services at the site will include a Thanksgiving eve service on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. “We have folks who come to that from Ephrata and North East, Md.,” said Yuninger. “It’s a small, but vigorous crowd.” A Christmas Eve service will be held at the church at 11 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 24. “It’s a candlelight service with lessons and carols,” shared Yuninger, who noted that an Easter dawn service is held at 6:30 a.m. on Easter, which in 2024 will be Sunday, March 31.
Chorister Don Brackbill will oversee the final hymn sing. Yuninger noted that common songs that are requested at the hymn sings include “How Great Thou Art,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” “It Is Well With My Soul,” and “I Danced in the Morning.”
The church is heated, but it is not air-conditioned, and there are no indoor restrooms. A portable restroom is available outside during summer activities.
Yuninger likes to tell the story of how the church was founded on the property. “The Scots-Irish who settled here determined that they were going to have a church here, but the presbytery and the synod said, ‘No, you
ACRES
have to go 10 miles to Pequea (Church),’” explained Yuninger. The presbytery is the governing body above the local church, and the synod is the regional governing body over he presbytery. “(The settlers) decided to stay here and petitioned the presbytery twice and were denied twice,” Yuninger continued, noting that finally the synod tabled the issue, and the church members continued to meet at the spot until 1740, when they finally received approval and built the log structure. “It just shows the backbone of these people,” shared Yuninger, who added that when it came time to build a larger and more permanent building, a church member was sent to Ireland for stone. He returned with about a dozen stone masons to build the church. Yuninger added that people who took part in the Revolutionary War are buried in the church cemetery. “There’s so much history here, and I think that’s important,” she stated.

HOUSE LISTING: An outstanding 102-acre beef/chicken/crop farm. Mostly square plotting, some of the best soil anywhere on the highly productive farm. Beautiful historic Limestone farmhouse dates back to 1764, has desirable 24’x13’ eat-in kitchen w/seating area; 23’x13’ living/dining room; family room; storage room; ML laundry; mud room; 5 bedrooms; 1.5 bathrooms; beautiful stamped concrete patio; un-improved basement; oil furnace; updated windows; on-site septic.
ANIMAL BUILDINGS: Working chicken broiler house (Tyson contract) is 500’x44’ (max 29,000 birds) w/(2) 24-ton feed bins; 30-KW solar panels; steer barn has loafing area for 165-head beef; 20’x 60’ Harvestor silo (shelled corn unloader), (2) 18’x70’ concrete silos; 10’x55’ concrete solo; Rissler feed mixer; bunk feeder; 85-KW generator w/Cummins diesel engine serves the entire farm; (2) good water wells (tied together) w/UV lights.
STORAGE BUILDINGS: 88’x55’ steel equipment shed, 1 work bay has over-head door, concrete floor; older 60’x30 tobacco barn transformed into vehicle garage w/ finished lower level had small business w/office area. Clay Twp.; Ephrata S.D. This working farm is in Ag. Preserve and the Clean-Green program so taxes are only approx. $8,000.
AUCTIONEER NOTE: Truly a rare opportunity to buy one of the last original large working farms in the area. Approx. 95-acres are tillable. Fields are basically level but the rich limestone top-soil drains very well and grows tremendous crops. Provides diverse income for financial stability. Our understanding is the farm could be split in two parcels because it is over 100-acres. Ask your Attorney to see if this would work for you if wanted/needed. This farm needs nothing and is capable to start paying for itself the first day you own it.
OPEN HOUSE: Call/Text Auctioneer 717-587-8906.
BRIEF TERMS: $300,000 down payment day of auction, balance in 75 days. Attorney Tony Schimaneck 717-299-5251. Crops are reserved from the auction. Farm will be sold by the acre x 102.
