Not just horsin’ around

According to Jennifer Rummel, the horse show held by Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC), an organization that provides equine-assisted therapeutic activities to individuals with special needs, is mainly about inclusivity. “It’s a community event, and we encourage people to come (join us),” said Rummel. “Parents of children with special needs will tell you their children are excluded from a lot of things, but this is their event, and it’s wonderful when the community comes out and cheers them on.”

The GMTRC horse show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, beginning at 9 a.m. at GMTRC, 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster. Titled “Eventing Extravaganza - an Equestrian Triathlon,” the show will include students demonstrating their achievements, a skilled horsemanship demonstration around noon, and food available by donation. There is no admission fee to attend, and on-street parking is

Stair climb will honor fallen first responders

Lancaster County’s annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the stair climb at 9 a.m. Participants will be required to pay a set cost to sign up, and registration will also be available online at www.lancasterstairclimb.org until Friday, Sept. 15.

Once the memorial service begins, participants will begin a procession up the steps of the stadium. They will

circle the stadium five times, making the distance of the climb equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. During the climb, each participant will carry an image or the badge of a first responder who was killed while responding to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Every year, many first responders travel to the Barnstormers’ stadium to participate in the event. Firefighters often choose to don their full set of equipment for the climb, carrying the same type of heavy gear that their fallen comrades did as they rescued those trapped in the twin towers. In

available in the adjacent neighborhood. Plenty of parking is available for buggies as well.

The event, which has been held for more than a decade, offers about 35 participants an opportunity to showcase their skills and receive a ribbon. “There’s a proficiency element,” explained Rummel. “Classes are based on ability.” Rummel noted that students with limited core strength need help sitting on the horse and guiding the horse, but others are able to trot independently, so categories are arranged accordingly. In addition to performing for an audience, students spend time with other students at the event. “Most (lessons) are individual because (each student’s) needs are so unique,” Rummel explained. “So, (the show is) an opportunity for students to spend time with each other.” The skilled performance will include a rider demonstrating dressage and jumping.

The event will include a fundraiser tied to fall-themed planters located around the arena and the entrance. Rummel explained that a GMTRC

Six years of celebrating recovery

The ELANCO-area Celebrate Recovery (CR) - a 12-step, Christcentered discipleship recovery program for individuals age 18 and up that meets from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Thursday at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Hollandhas not changed much over the six years it has been active. According to leaders Carol Musser and Karl Stoltzfus, that is the way it should be.

“What we do here is consistent,” said Musser. Stoltzfus agreed, saying, “They strive for that. There’s a familiarity

the past, the event has drawn first responders from across the entire county, as well as firefighters and emergency personnel from New York, Connecticut, Maryland and New Jersey. “We have guys from outside of the state who only see each other at the stair climb every year. It’s a common bond for people,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company. “They swap stories and catch up. Firefighters already have a bond with each other, but the memorial makes that stronger.”

Similar memorial events are held throughout the country in almost every state, and Lancaster’s stair climb is one of the largest in the

groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

region. The proceeds from the Lancaster event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which distributes funds to the New York City Fire Department’s counseling services. Many survivors, victims’ families and those who helped with rescue efforts continue to receive counseling over two decades after the attacks.

Yuill helped to establish the annual stair climb in Lancaster 13 years ago as a way to honor fellow firefighter Ronald Pucca. Yuill and Pucca met at a training program in New York, and Pucca was one of the city’s fire marshals who was killed by the collapse of the World Trade Center.

Members of the community, especially first responders, immediately rallied in support of the memorial.

“The memorial gives people a unique way to show that they haven’t forgotten, like everyone

to what we do. Each CR has its own personality, but the materials are consistent.”

Offering a safe place for individuals dealing with addictions has been a goal of the program since it started. The group is still supported by Petra Church, Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, and Bethany Grace Fellowship. Each week, a hot meal is served beginning at 6:15 p.m., followed by worship, which usually includes a message or testimony, and small group meetings, which are divided by gender. The group currently meets on Thursdays, but it will begin meeting on Tuesdays effective Oct. 3.

During the second meeting of each month, a live worship band led by Randy Blank takes part. Blank said he is usually joined by three other musicians, but recently a vocalist has taken part as well. “We play worship songs - the same songs we would do on Sunday morning,” said Blank, who initially

Lancaster, LEADS seeking Christmas tree

The city of Lancaster, in partnership with Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), is seeking an evergreen to serve as the city’s Christmas tree in Penn Square this holiday season.

Property owners who have an appropriately shaped, 25-foot or taller evergreen that they are planning to remove are invited to contact city arborist Rick Anderer at 717-291-4846 or randerer@cityoflancasterpa.gov. They should provide their name, address, and phone number, along with the location of the tree and a photo. A jury of city staff members and LEADS board members will select the tree.

The tree selected will be cut down by the city, then transported and mounted in Penn Square shortly before Thanksgiving. The donor will be recognized for his or her contribution in a press release and during the program at the mayor’s tree lighting. After the holidays are over, the tree will be transformed into mulch for city parks.

The tree will be the centerpiece of the mayor’s tree lighting on Friday, Nov. 24. For more information about the event, visit http://visitlancastercity.com/ city-events/lancaster-city-for-the -holidays.

tried to recruit musicians, but soon learned that CR attendees were willing to play. “God brought the three musicians from among those who attend,” shared Blank.

On Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m., ELANCO CR will celebrate six years of serving the area with special guests Manny and Erika Garcia of Livingsong. The name of the ministry was chosen to express a daily goal of becoming a living song of worship displayed in a lifestyle representative of following Jesus. The mission of the ministry is to “proclaim the Gospel message to the least, the last, and the lost.” “They give testimonies and play music and give a message,” noted Musser.

CR marks landmarks of sobriety by giving out chips. Musser noted that some attendees will come to a meeting with several years of sobriety to mark. “We had one (participant) last year, and I had to make up a chip because they don’t have a 51-year chip,” she said. “It can be

from one month to multiple years.”

Musser noted that often a participant will give a testimony. “We love that,” she said. “They may not have been regular attendees, but it’s a recovery journey.”

CR continues to need volunteer help with the weekly meetings. Help is needed to facilitate, set up, tear down, and work with the audiovisual and sound components.

Readers who would like to know more about ELANCO CR may call 717-587-2202, email elanco celebraterecovery@gmail.com, or search for “ELANCO Celebrate Recovery” on Facebook.

Athletic Hall of Fame to induct new members

Conestoga Valley (CV) will induct two new classes of athletes into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, Sept. 15. The Class of 2022 will consist of Trey Keeley, Melissa Gates Rohrer, Travis Switzer, and Jennifer Wanner Teale. The Class of 2023 will consist of Doug Cody, Dave Evans, Lee Gerdes, and Gianna Yurchak. The induction event will begin at 4 p.m. with a reception in the high school’s main lobby, followed by the awards ceremony in the CV auditorium. During halftime of the CV versus Warwick football game, this year’s honorees will be introduced to the school community. All activities are free and open to the public. The high school is located at 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster.

Cody graduated from CV in 1978 and is being inducted as a Friend of CV Athletics. As a student, Cody participated in crosscountry, basketball, track, and the volleyball club. After graduation, he continued to serve the CV community as president of the high school Booster Club for soccer and basketball. He coached youth basketball for 16 years, the travel team for six years, and the middle school team for four years. He also coached the youth soccer team.

Evans, a 1983 graduate, earned three varsity letters in basketball and two in soccer, and he was a member of the club volleyball team. While on the Bucks basketball squad, he was selected to the Lancaster All-Section and AllLeague teams. He was instrumental in helping CV to advance to the District 3 title game and qualify for the PIAA State Tournament. In 1980 and 1981, Evans was a member of the 15 and under AAU/USA Junior Olympic National Championship volleyball team. In 1981, he was named the 15 and under team’s Most Valuable Player. During his senior year, Evans was an All-Star player on the state championship volleyball team.

Gerdes is being honored for her 36 years at the helm of CV’s field hockey program. Under her direction, the team won numerous sectional contests and a LancasterLebanon (L-L) Championship, and it qualified for many District 3 tournaments, along with the PIAA State Tournament. Dozens of Gerdes’ players received recognition for their performance by state and national organizations.

Gerdes guided many of her players toward careers at the collegiate level. Gerdes’ coaching resume includes working at Franklin & Marshall College as an assistant hockey and lacrosse coach and

serving as a member of the CV girls’ basketball staff.

Keeley is a 2007 graduate who earned two varsity letters in football, two in basketball, and four in lacrosse.
