Communities unite to fight hunger
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“There’shunger everywhere,” said Cheryl Zook Justice, CROP Walk recruiter for Akron Mennonite Church. “We like that CROP (provides funds) both locally and globally.” Justice added that members of Akron Mennonite are very involved with service agencies that provide food and housing, so it makes sense to take part in CROP. “We heavily encourage youth to participate,” added Justice. “It’s tangible.”
Akron community members have banded together with individuals from the Conestoga Valley area and the ELANCO area to take part in the 46th New Holland/Leola CROP Walk, which will take place at the New Holland Memorial Community Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Sunday, Oct. 15. The walk will leave the Rotary Pavilion at 1:30 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at the park at 1 p.m. to complete the registration process. They may walk up to 3 miles following a route
Building connections and giving back

Great things happen when women on a mission get together. Lancaster County Women for Good formed last year with the goal of raising money for local nonprofits. So far, the group has donated more than $23,000, with 284 women contributing to the effort.
Most recently, the organization presented a check for $7,000 to Arch Street Center at Lancaster County Women for Good’s quarterly Gather & Grant meeting. Located in Lancaster, Arch Street Center
provides support and services for adults living with mental illness.
Lancaster County Women for Good began as an outreach of Grapevine, a social giving platform that brings people together for philanthropic work. “Grapevine initiated a bunch of groups in different areas of the country and from that point handed it over to local leadership,” said founding member Anna Horst. She’s joined by the local leadership team of group host Joelle Terranova and event coordinators Susan Klapkin and Kirstin Knopp.

When Dona Fisher started Change of Pace - a nondenominational Bible study for women - at what is now Four Seasons Golf Club in Hempfield, bellbottom pants were still in style. “It was in the early 1970s,” recalled Dona, who added that her husband, Herb, had purchased the venue, where she decided to start the study in the banquet room. “I had 15 women the first morning, and it grew to over 100 (attendees),” noted Dona, who moved the study to the Hempfield

through Garden Spot Village (GSV). In addition to Akron Mennonite, local churches that take part include Cedar Grove Presbyterian, Ranck’s United Methodist, St. John Center Lutheran, the Community Church at Garden Spot Village, and Trinity Lutheran, all in the ELANCO area, as well as Leola United Methodist Church (LUMC) and Zion Lutheran in Leola.
“We like that CROP (provides funds) both locally and globally.”
CROP Walks, which have been in existence nationwide for more than 50 years, are sponsored by Church World Service (CWS). According to CWS, CROP Walk funds help transform communities by bringing food and water to people in need in several countries. Funds raised by CROP help dig wells to provide water for drinking and agriculture. In some countries, people travel an average of 6 miles a day to
obtain clean water. The availability of clean water is especially important because when individuals do not have to walk miles to obtain water, they can use the time to work, build a business, or take advantage of educational opportunities.
But CROP does not serve only those overseas. Local food pantries benefit by receiving 25% of the funds raised by the CROP Hunger Walk nearest them. In ELANCO, the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center in New Holland received $500 in 2022, and the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank in Terre Hill also received funds. In the Conestoga Valley area, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS) Food Bank received nearly $1,300 last year.
Krisana Poontajak, pastor of Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church and one of the organizers of the New Holland/Leola CROP Walk, said that each year the goal is to raise $10,000. Last year, $7,300 was raised, and in 2021, the event brought in $8,000.

Sensenig family to hold celebration
The Sensenig family celebration will take place on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Hahnstown Mennonite School, 255 Hahnstown Road, Ephrata, for the Sensenig, Sensenich, and Senseney families. Attendees should bring a hot or cold dish for lunch at noon.
The Sensenig family genealogy will be available on a CD for the descendants of Jacob and Maria Krey Sensenig, who immigrated to the United States from Switzerland circa 1717. CDs will be available to purchase.
Maps will be available to visit the Sensenig farm cemetery, located off White Oak Road on Jacob’s homestead.
Attendees should bring family updates, items of interest, and stories to the reunion. For more information, readers may call 717-733-8757 or email wessta@ ptd.net with “Sensenig Genealogy” in the subject line.
United Methodist Church when Herb sold the property.
When the study outgrew the Methodist Church, Dona moved it to its present home at Lancaster Alliance Church, located at 210 Pitney Road Lancaster. It will be in that venue that the fall session of Change of Pace will offer two studies for women on Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m., beginning on Sept. 28 and ending on Nov. 30, with no study on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23.
One of the studies will focus on the book of Amos. “Amos is an old man,” said Dona, who first thought the study would not attract attendees. “Who is going to want to study the life of an old man?” she asked. But after engaging with the study by Jennifer Rothschild, Dona saw a connection with modern living. “When you read the book, you realize how negative this guy was,” said Dona. “We hear so much that is negative (in the media).” Looking at
the relationship between Amos and the present day, Dona recognized a timely lesson. “God taught Amos a few lessons about his negativity, and there’s a beautiful ending about how he chose to follow God and live for Him,” she explained. “I believe this is a good study for now.”
Another class will utilize “Discerning the Voice of God” by Priscilla Shirer. Again, Dona honed in on current media and the difficulty of knowing what to believe. “There are false prophets and teachers around not speaking the truth,” said Dona, “Unless we are taught to listen to the voice of God, we want to make our own minds up.” When she recognized this struggle for women of faith, Dona saw an opportunity. “We need to come together and learn how to hear the voice of the Lord,” she said. “Priscilla Shirer explains so well how to have a relationship with the Lord, (so) then you hear His voice. I think it will be well received,” she said.
There is a nominal cost to attend each of the studies. Books will be available at the church on the first day of the study. Readers who would like to preregister may email copcbiblestudies@gmail.com.More information about the study may be found at https://changeofpace central.webs.com/. Individuals with specific questions may call 717-519-5220.

Women for Good frompg
Each local group sets its own fundraising parameters. For the Lancaster group, women are asked to commit to giving a minimum of $50 per quarter. In the weeks leading up to the group’s Gather & Grant meetings - which are held in February, May, August and Novembermembers may nominate a nonprofit they’d like to support.
“The nonprofit can have a national or global reach, but it must serve our local community,” Horst explained. “It also must be a 501(c)(3) in good standing.”
From the list of nominees, members vote for their favorites, and representatives from the top three choices are invited to come to a Gather & Grant meeting to give a presentation about their organization and answer any questions. The group then votes on the recipient of that quarter’s donation.
As of now, the organization raises all of its funds through member donations, but Horst said organizers are looking into sponsorships and fundraisers in the future.
Along with Gather & Grant meetings, which are usually held at Southern Market in downtown Lancaster, the group members also meet once a month for Girl’s Night Out.
“We’ll get together to support a local business, and it’s an extra bonus if the business is womanowned,” Horst said. “It’s an opportunity to have fun, socialize, ask questions about our organization and meet other women.”
While most Gather & Grants and Girl’s Night Out events are held on the second Wednesday of the month,

October’s Girl’s Night Out will be held on the third Wednesday of the month due to the Manheim Farm Show. It will happen at Horst Arts, 17 N. Main St., Manheim, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
For Horst, Lancaster County Women for Good has offered an easy way to give back to local organizations while also making friends.
“I love the idea of making philanthropy accessible to everyone,” Horst said. “I also like that it gives everyone
an opportunity to meet like-minded women who have similar outlooks on philanthropy.”
She said women who are involved with local nonprofits are especially encouraged to join. “It’s a great way to network and to meet potential volunteers or donors and get to know people who can support your organization,” she stated.
