Sincethe fall of 2022, David Kieffer, president of the FaithfulGive board, has been preparing for the organization’s first online giving event to benefit organizations with a Christian mission that are active in Lancaster County. “We prayed and thought and designed and listened for a year,” said Kieffer of FaithfulGive’s five-member board and its organizational team. “Mostly we listened to what would serve various nonprofit leaders.”
The result is a three-day online giving event, which will take place in October. More than 40 local organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, which will open just after midnight on Sunday, Oct. 15, and close at the end of the day on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
To introduce the event, a breakfast will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, at

There is no cost to attend either event, but donations will be welcomed. Those wishing to attend either event may register at www.faithful give.org.
Awards given at the picnic will include prizes that participating organizations will compete for from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the event. Prize categories are the Engaged Donor prize to benefit smaller organizations; the Show Me the Money prize for the largest unique donation; a prize package from Masterpiece Marketing, which will be awarded based on a written submission; and the Just Keep Swimming award, which will be awarded by the board based on

From the outside looking in, the annual Lancaster County Toy Ride may look like just another group of bikers out for a day on the road. But it’s more than that. The event seeks to help fund Christmas gifts for children who may not otherwise receive many presents.
The 2023 Lancaster County Toy Ride will be conducted on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will begin and end at American Legion Post 34, 1388 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

A monetary donation or a donation of a toy with a set minimum value is suggested. All proceeds from the event will go to Lancaster County Toys for Tots.
“Sometimes people just see the (tattoos) and the leather,” said Jimmy Emig, the ride director and an elder for the tri-state chapter of Bikers for Christ. “I think some bikers get labeled just by the look. But you can’t judge a book by a cover. Open the book. If you do, you’re going to see a big heart. It’s one big heart on two wheels. That’s what a real biker is.”

When Sandy Outlar, community relations representative for Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS), needed a speaker for the annual breakfast celebrating tuition aid, Jeff Rutt, president of Keystone Custom Homes and chair of HOPE International, immediately sprang to his mind. “I knew Jeff, and I knew of his genuine love for the Lord and his giftedness in building homes and his giftedness in overseeing a ministry that touches thousands,” recalled Outlar. “I couldn’t think of anyone who could do a better job.”
Rutt will speak at the breakfast to be held in the new LCCS Student Life Center on Wednesday, Nov. 15, from 7 until 8:15 a.m.
The title of Rutt’s talk is “Building a Business While Building a Ministry,” but Rutt noted that the subtitle is “Embrace the Valleys.” Rutt has faced a number of valleys in his lifetime, which he reports began on a Lancaster County dairy farm, which he bought from his family at the age of 20. Ten years later, Rutt was wondering what God had for him next. In the early 1990s, Rutt went into home building, although he had no background in the area. “God blessed it,” he recalled, but in 2008, Rutt was told by a See LCCS pg 3

“It’s a brotherhood,” said Emig. “There is nothing bigger than when you’re riding along with another biker. You may not know his name, but you know his purpose. It’s inspiring. It’s coming together for one cause.”
That brotherhood is extensive and far-reaching. Between 500 and 1,000 bikers are expected to participate in the Lancaster County Toy Ride.
“It’s the biker community,” said Emig. “Over half of them who come out are from the Lancaster area. It’s motorcycle clubs coming together. This is the biggest ride in our biker community. We average 80 to 100 riding events each year and this is the biggest one put together for a cause. This is the one that everyone circles on their calendars.”
Emig said that the Lancaster County chapter of Toys for Tots’ operating budget for this year is $80,000.
The purpose of the ride is to help provide some of those funds.
“$80,000 is a pretty big number,” said Emig. “There’s no goal besides trying to help offset the costs for Toys for Tots. I think bikers can lead by example and show what happens when people come together. We need to start coming together.”
The Lancaster County Toy Ride was first established 25 years ago. In the past, toys and funds were donated directly to local children in hospitals or children who were homeless.
This year marks the first time that the ride has been associated with Lancaster County Toys for Tots.
“It’s almost all the time that we’re looking to help out children,” said Emig. “When we first started this, we just wanted to help local children have a good Christmas. We’re always looking for ways to help more children. We want to keep serving the community as a brotherhood.”
To donate to the Lancaster County Toy Ride, email LancasterToyRide@gmail.com or call Emig at 717-575-6338.

banker that all his loans must be paid in 60 days. “It was a big challenge,” he noted. “That was a valley.” He entered another valley in 2015, when his wife of more than 40 years, Sue, was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. Sue is now cancer free and a “living miracle” today, said Rutt.
Not long after beginning Keystone Custom Homes, Rutt led a group from his church to Ukraine with containers of supplies. “We had good intentions, but we were inadvertently causing a cycle of entitlement and dependency,” said Rutt, who noted that a pastor in Ukraine told him, “Your helping is hurting.” “That comment shifted
our entire approach,” said Rutt, who turned to microfinance instead of handouts.
“We started sending small loans … as low as $20,” Rutt recalled. “That shift empowered the families we were serving spiritually, physically, personally, and socially with dignity to become pillars in their own communities,” noted Rutt. “God prepared the soil, and the seeds of HOPE International were planted in 1997.”
Outlar believes Rutt’s life and ministry lines up with the mission of LCCS. “There are a lot of storms in life, but (Rutt) is saved by his Savior, and he has risen to a level of humble respectability,” said Outlar. “He’s not looking for
notoriety. He just wants to put his head to the ground and do the work and the ministry.”
Rutt’s preference is to talk about individuals who have utilized loans from HOPE, and he pointed out that Nadia, “our very first client we gave a loan to in Ukraine,” now owns a clothing store.
“When (she) paid her last payment, she said, ‘I won’t be needing any more loans because I am not poor anymore,’” reported Rutt. He also discussed two Muslim women in Rwanda who received loans for their sneaker business and have since come to Christ, as well as Anastasia in Burundi who used a $20 loan to fund a wedding rental business.
“When I heard from Nadia, I realized this was God’s answer to prayer 17 years earlier,” said Rutt.
Some of LCCS’ 500 students will share their talents and testimony at the event. Outlar noted that the breakfast is designed to thank business donors but that other members of the community are invited to attend. To register, email ddissmore@lccs.cc or call 717-556-0711 by Wednesday, Nov. 8.

Veritas Academy sets fall fest, fun run
Veritas Academy, a preschool through 12th-grade classical Christian school, will host its annual Great Pumpkin Chase, a fall fest and kids’ fun run, on Saturday, Oct. 21, at Lancaster County Central Park’s Shuts Environmental Center, 3 Nature’s Way, Lancaster.
This event features a 100yard Tot Trot for kids age 5 and under and a 1-mile timed cross-country racethe Great Pumpkin Chasefor kids up to sixth grade. In both runs, kids are challenged to beat “The Pumpkin,” a senior student runner in full costume as the titular gourd who encourages the
runners before and during the race. This year, the role of the Pumpkin will be filled by Veritas senior and varsity cross-country runner Simon Rickert.
Runners in both races will receive an official race bib, and the top 10 boy and girl finishers in the 1-mile run will receive medals. All Tot Trot runners will receive a small prize.
Families can also enjoy carnival style games, face painting, inflatables, and food for purchase until noon, all happening in the field space by the Shuts Environmental Library. The fall festival is run by the Veritas Student Government.
Additionally, FM 90.3
WJTL’s Kids Cookie Break will be live on location with a Pop-Up Party. Kids can visit the Kids Cookie Break tent for contests and giveaways, radio song requests, and a free Chick-fil-A cookie while supplies last.
There is a fee to participate in the Tot Trot or Great Pumpkin Chase, and registration is required by Thursday, Oct. 19, at www.info.veritasacademy.com/
pumpkin-chase. The fall fest games and activities are free, and food purchases will benefit Veritas Academy Student Government, with proceeds helping to cover the cost of student events. This event, which began as an elementary school crosscountry meet, has grown immensely over the years and was first opened to the public in 2019. Last year, more than 120 runners participated in the Great Pumpkin Chase, with even more visitors for the fall fest.
LCSWMA encourages proper battery disposal
Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel can spark and explode when damaged. To combat the growing risk of battery fires, the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has announced the launch of a pub-
lic education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries.
Rechargeable batteries are in many common household items, including power tools, toys, cellphones, laptops, watches, vape devices and electric toothbrushes. If the rechargeable battery becomes damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark or explosion. Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during the waste management process.
According to Robert Zorbaugh, chief executive officer of LCSWMA, the improper disposal of rechargeable batteries is putting trash haulers, waste disposal and recycling facilities, employees and the community at risk. Countless fires have started in the back of trash trucks and at waste disposal facilities.
Karen Gross, LCSWMA communications manager, would like the community to know that there are many free and convenient drop-off locations for end-of-life rechargeable batteries. In Lancaster County, resi-
dents can use LCSWMA’s drivethrough Household Hazardous Waste Facility to drop-off both alkaline and rechargeable batteries.
For more details and to learn about other collection locations, visit www.SafeBattery Disposal.com. The webpage, available in English and Spanish, includes information regarding specialty batteries such as e-bike and electric vehicle batteries as well as battery handling tips.
More information about LCSWMA is available at www.lcswma.org.

Program to feature Native American-style canoe
Author and experimental archaeologist Robin Moore will bring his 13-foot birchbark canoe from Bucks County to the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park, on Sunday, Oct. 15. He will give a presentation from 2 to 4 p.m.
Made of birch bark covering cedar structures, birchbark canoes were developed hundreds of years ago by indigenous people in what is now Canada. The canoes were light enough to be carried on land to avoid the riskiest stretches of waterway. Moore noted that the area that is now Lancaster County probably lacked the trees most suitable for the canoes’ construction, but tribes such as the Iroquois on Northern raids sometimes took birchbark canoes back with them to use in what is now the United States. European explorers praised the canoes, and fur traders used them extensively in both Canada and the United States.
Canvas, a manufactured fabric, has largely supplanted
birch bark as a protective covering for canoes, but in the summer of 2022, Moore spent three weeks in a remote northern Ontario location building an Ojibway Longnose style birchbark canoe with instruction from Tom Byers, a master of the birchbark canoe building craft. Byers is of French and Cree heritage and has built 98 birchbark canoes over the last 25 years. Working long days on
a property with no electricity, power tools or internet access, Moore and Byers used an ax and a crooked knife to collect natural materials from the Canadian bush and build Moore’s watercraft.
In addition to the canoe, Moore will display scale models of traditional styles of birchbark watercraft and samples of roots of Northern white cedar, Jack pine and birch
Broadway actress to perform at Ware Center
The Arts at Millersville University will present Ali Stroker in concert on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Stroker has taken her one-woman show all over the country with a mission to improve the lives of others through the arts. Her personal motto centers on “turning your limitations into your opportunities.”
Stroker won the 2019 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and the
Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as “Ado Annie” in “Oklahoma!” She made history as the first performer in a wheelchair to appear on Broadway, doing so in Deaf West’s 2015 revival of “Spring Awakening.” As a television star, Stroker was a cast member in the final season of “Ozark” and is a recurring character in Netflix’s “Echoes” and in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” She co-wrote the

Kieffer said that the decision to start FaithfulGive was motivated by the many Kingdom-minded organizations located in the county.
“This is really a movement of people who live locally who recognize that Lancaster has a rich heritage of biblically faithful nonprofit organizations founded to reflect and live out biblical convictions in every area of life,” he said. “This was started by those who want to celebrate those organizations, nurture their vision, and guard it for the next

Ephrata Cloister sets Community Day program
In the 1700s, Historic Ephrata Cloister was the town of Ephrata. Like any small village, it had craftsmen who wove cloth, baked bread and built houses. Ephrata also featured a printing office to produce books and a doctor to care for the sick.
These and other 18th-century activities will come to life as part of Community Day, an interactive educational program set for Friday, Oct. 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program is open to public and private schools, as well as homeschoolers. There will be an admission fee, with separate prices for students and for
chaperones. Advance reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling the Ephrata Cloister at 717-733-6600.
The hands-on program will offer at least a dozen different stations around the historic site, with each stop offering a 10- to 15-minute look at things such as lighting, clothing and writing in the 1700s community. Students will be free to travel in small groups with their chaperones in any order through the various interpretive stations.
A visit to the bakery will show that bread did not always come in plastic wrappers, and the carpenter will explain that
that not all roof shingles are made the same. Students will also visit the doctor and the schoolhouse, where they will learn how to write on stone.
Historic Ephrata Cloister is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with support from the Ephrata Cloister Associates. For more information, visit www.Ephrata Cloister.org.

Sierra Club plans hike
Members of the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group invite the public to join them for an easy to moderate scenic hike through the Nolde Forest at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct, 14. The hike was scheduled for last spring but was postponed because of threatening weather.
The 725-acre Nolde Forest with its Environmental Education Center, 3025 New Holland Road, Reading, features deciduous woodlands and coniferous plantations, which are
laced with networks of trails that meander along streams and ponds and through diverse habitats. In addition to being treated to a scenic walk beside a stream, hikers will be able to view colorful autumn leaves, which should be at their prime.

Tapas Shindig to aid in fight against human trafficking
BY JEFF FALK
The battle against human trafficking is difficult and continual. North Star Initiative is seeking help to carry on the fight.
It is that mission that is really at the heart of North Star Initiative’s annual Tapas Shindig. This year’s fundraising, awareness raising and relationship building event will be presented on Friday, Oct. 20, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Foundry48, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz.
The event will begin with networking, a silent auction, tapas and mocktails, followed by a program and live auction, before concluding with dessert and coffee.
The theme for the event is “Light Up the Night. - Togeth-
er we can illuminate the path to a brighter future for survivors of sex trafficking.”
“A lot of people ask me, ‘What can I do? I want to get involved,’” said North Star Initiative executive director Melinda Clark. “This is the time to come and get involved. It’s also partnering together to form a community where trafficking is unimaginable, where trafficking doesn’t exist. We encourage people to find their place in the battle. It’s a massive battle, but the battle is winnable. Want to know where to start? This is it.”
Tapas is a food trend that originated in Spain and involves serving a variety of appetizers and small servings. The evening’s ambiance will be enhanced by live music.
“The food is delicious, and it’s just one of the fun aspects of the evening,” said Clark. “We’re gathering with good people over good food for a good cause. It’s a feel of friends getting together to enjoy each other’s company. ... It builds its own synergy when people connect around the cause.”
Clark is expected to address the gathering about North Star Initiative’s purpose, the work it has already accomplished and the struggles that lie ahead.
“I’ll have a chance to share North Star’s mission and vision to end trafficking and supporting those lives that have been affected by it,” said Clark. “I want to talk about how our common experiences can help the challenges our survivors face. People think it’s happening just overseas, but it’s not. It’s also happening here in Lancaster County. It’s the perfect opportunity to get an update on the state of it.”
North Star Initiative is planning for 200 people to attend Tapas Shindig. This year’s goal is to raise $200,000 for the mission, $25,000 more than was donated in 2022.
This year will mark North Star Initiative’s fifth edition of Tapas Shindig. Last year’s event was conducted at The Junction Center in Manheim.
Located in Lititz, North Star Initiative was founded in 2010. It began through an undercover collaboration with law enforcement.
To register for the Tapas Shindig go to www.north starinitiative.org/upcoming -events.
Attendees were ready to bid in an auction at a previous year’s Tapas Shindig.

Truck Convoy raises funds for Make-A-Wish
Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley announced that the 34th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy raised $553,838, the second-highest total in the event’s history. The funds raised at the Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will help to grant 75% of the wishes in the Susquehanna Valley this year.
Make-A-Wish recently hosted its annual Convoy Celebration at The Farm at Eagles Ridge, where the new top 30 and grand driver lists were announced. The top 30 drivers in this year’s convoy raised $251,738, with Michael Kindt coming in first for the third straight year.
Up until 2017, raising $1,000 was enough to qualify for the Top 30. Once raising “a grand” no longer guaranteed a Top 30 spot, the Grand Driver designation was created. Every driver that raises more than $1,000 but does not qualify in the Top 30 earns the Grand Driver title. This year, 21 drivers earned the Grand Driver title and raised $32,369.
During the 2023 Mother’s Day
Truck Convoy, 395 trucks drove in the 26-mile convoy through Lancaster County and 50 Make-A-Wish kids rode along.
At the Convoy Celebration, the convoy committee was recognized for its dedication and commitment to make the 34th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy a success. Also in attendance were the four Wish Kid Ambassadors whose stories were shared throughout the convoy campaign last year to inspire drivers throughout their fundraising efforts.
The 35th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, will take place on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. The 2024 driver fundraising campaign will kick off on Monday, Oct. 16, at www.wishconvoy.org. Sponsorship opportunities are available for the 35th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy. For more than 35 years, Link Up has paired orchestras with students in grades three to five at schools in their local communities to explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills, including creative work and composition, through a hands-on music curriculum.
Link Up addresses the need for music instruction and resources by providing a free, year-long curriculum that teachers can implement, along with printed and digital classroom materials, online video and audio resources and the professional
development and support necessary to make the program an engaging experience for students.
The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra is one of more than 100 national and international organizations chosen for this program. Since 2003, Carnegie Hall has partnered with professional, community and university orchestras across the U.S. and around the world to support their existing education programs and strengthen their partnerships with local schools. In 2023-24, Link Up will partner with sites in the U.S., as well as in Canada, China, the Dominican Republic, Spain, Kenya, New Zealand and Japan, to serve more than 300,000 students and teachers globally.
