Taking away the scary CVSD prekindergarten program makes transition to school more comfortable BY ANN MEAD ASH
t’s a great opportunity for these kids,” said Karen Sullivan, First 10 administrator with the Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD). “The transition to kindergarten will be so much easier because they have been in the buildings.” Starting school on the first day of kindergarten will be more comfortable for more than 100 CVSD children thanks to the opportunity to take part in a full-day prekindergarten program made possible by a Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts Grant. The program brings 3- and 4-year-olds to their homeschool (whenever possible) on a bus with their siblings. The six prekindergarten classrooms are located in Brownstown, Fritz, Smoketown, and Leola elementary schools, along with Lancaster Mennonite School. Each classroom has 18 students and two teachers. Steps to Success Inc. and Owl Hill Learning Centers are lead partners with CVSD in several of the classrooms.
“I
Children in Conestoga Valley School District who qualify may attend prekindergarten classes in school district buildings.
Adriana Witman, school-age program administrator with Steps to Success, said that the preschool began discussing the program with CVSD early in 2023. “(This prekindergarten program) is for families at 300% of poverty level,” she said. “It gives those kids the
opportunity to get a high-quality education through a grant-funded program.” Steps to Success employee Anneliese Gural, lead teacher at the Leola Elementary Pre-K Counts location, said that the program uses the Creative Curriculum, which is
literacy based, and that a variety of books are part of the daily learning program, including those with social and emotional stories and topics related to the learning units. The classroom has a number of learning centers, including those dedicated to science, dramatic play,
blocks, a light table, art, writing, math manipulatives, fine motor skills, and sensory activities. There is also a cozy corner for problem solving and identifying feelings. “(The students) work on fine motor skills to prepare them to write. They work on sounds, and, depending on the level of the child, they may work in small groups,” said Sullivan, who noted that activities for families will be part of the program as will Play and Learns, which involve open gyms and story times intended to develop social and emotional learning and sharing skills. To keep parents informed, Gural said, an app is used to message families throughout the day. “We send photos of the children completing work,” she noted, adding that a review of the unit that is being studied is sent home, along with work on a particular subject. “We will send home simple things so families can see the progress the child has made in the areas we’re working on,” she said. The bond between humans and dogs is different from those that exist between any of God’s other creatures. Puppies with a Purpose harnesses that relationship and even puts it to the test. In association with Lancaster County 4-H, Puppies with a Purpose is a dog fostering program designed to prepare young canines for a life of serving people with visual impairments. Bred for service by The Seeing Eye of Morristown, N.J., the puppies live in the homes of
Puppies with a Purpose members for about a year before receiving five months of professional training to become certified guide dogs. “Humans and dogs form that bond,” said Paula Cook, the leader of the Lancaster chapter of Puppies with a Purpose. “If that bond is there, it’s a mutual thing. That’s kind of how dogs are wired. With a personality of a dog, it’s a two-way street. That’s why people bond with their pets. That’s why visually impaired people bond with their guide dogs.” During monthly meetings at the See Puppies with a Purpose pg 3
Authors, crafters, food, and more Salem Hellers plans holiday bazaar BY ANN MEAD ASH
Deb Burns, one of the organizers of the annual Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church bazaar, has a room set aside for visiting authors this year. Last year, George Cooper, author of the recently published book “Joseph of Nazareth: A Story of Uncommon Love and Faith,” joined in the event to autograph copies of his book. This year, four more authors have signed on, along with more than 20 crafters and home-based Deb Burns (left) and Betty Snyder are preparing for the annual Salem Hellers business representatives to
enhance the offerings of the event. The 2023 holiday bazaar will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster. According to Burns, among the many crafters will be those who sell jewelry, dog scarves, crocheted items, wood crafts, handmade note cards and greeting cards, wreaths, candles, repurposed wine bottles, and handcrafted bags. Home-based business vendors will sell Avon products, items from Pampered Chef, baskets, Discovery Toys, Tupperware, and Thirty-One Gifts. See Salem Hellers pg 5

The dogs enjoy it.” Cook first became involved with Lancaster Puppies with a Purpose as a way to share an experience with her 8year-old daughter. That was 15 years ago. Cook’s daughter is now an adult, and the dog Cook is fostering is her 13th. “You know when you get (the dog) that you’re going to give it back,” said Cook. “And you know (the dog) is going to be helping someone. You know the dog is going to allow someone who’s visually impaired this freedom. It’s very gratifying.” For additional information about The Seeing Eye, go to www.seeingeye.org.

The loss of a baby affects a family for a lifetime, and care and support are needed well beyond the immediate time of loss. People who provide that care, whether in a professional or personal capacity, can benefit from attending “A Journey of a Lifetime,” an in-person perinatal conference sponsored by Share of Lancaster. The conference will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. It will present information for people in the medical field as well as therapists and others who have touched the lives of families that have lost a baby. “It’s been a while since Share had an in-person conference like this one,” said Dr. Serena Wu, who is a maternal fetal medicine physician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the executive director of Share. “To have a conference that is pulling in nationally recognized speakers on this subject matter is unique.” Highlights of the “Journey of a Lifetime” conference will include morning keynote speaker Dr. Robert Silver of
University of Utah, who has spent more than 20 years researching stillbirth and pregnancy loss. Afternoon sessions and speakers will feature a keynote address by Joanna Cole of CHOP, who has developed perinatal palliative and bereavement care programs. “The first half of the day will focus on the medical realm, and the second half will concentrate of the psychosocial realm,” Wu explained. A variety of panels will be featured, led by experts in the field. The conference is open to anyone who provides care or is affected by pregnancy loss, she noted, adding that it also provides continuing education credit for healthcare workers. “Part of Share of Lancaster’s mission is education and to bring awareness,” Wu said. “October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, so it’s timed with that. The theme is ‘Past, Present and Future’: W here have we been? Where are we now, and where are we going?” Founded more than 40 years ago by a bereaved mother in Lancaster and two nurses, Share of Lancaster helps
parents and families deal with the death of an infant from miscarriage, pregnancy complications, stillbirth, SIDS or other causes. “We want people to know they aren’t alone,” said Wu. “A lot of times, people will say, ‘Until I started talking about it, I didn’t realize other people had experienced this as well.’” Share will host the Share of Lancaster Walk 2023 the day after the conference, Sunday, Oct. 29, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. It will run from 5 to 7 p.m. “This is our annual remembrance event,” Wu said. “It’s a memorial service, but it’s not sad. It’s a way to remember our babies and spend time together. We have readings of writings submitted by Share members. We show a video presentation, and we call out every baby’s name. We also light candles near dusk, and that will light up the stadium.” Registration is free for the walk. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 20. For more information on the Share conference or the walk, visit www.shareof lancaster.org.

Mennonite history lecture posted grants of Lancaster County.” He is a lawyer, an amateur historian and a genealogist who has been conducting research on this topic for over 40 years. Also speaking will be Amos B. Hoover, a historian from Ephrata and the author of numerous books, including “German Language: Cradle of Our Heritage,” and John L. Ruth, a historian from Harleysville and the author of “Maintaining the Right Fellowship” and “The Earth Is the Lord’s.” A key aspect of Garber’s
research is the investigation of primary source documents, such as wills, deeds, property tax records, Orphans Court records, written diaries, and family Bible records. An unusual source of primary information is the diary written by Moravian missionary Georg Hantsch, who visited many Mennonite homes in Warwick, Manor, Conestoga and Earl townships in 1748. The diary, which describes many scenes of everyday life in Colonial Pennsylvania, has been annotated for the first time by Garber.
Garber will also discuss the controversy about the presence of Hans Herr in Lancaster County, as well as some faithpromoting experiences of some of the pioneer Mennonite families. His presentation will include photographs of fraktur and other rare documentary records. The program is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to cover the cost of the event. Author of “The Compass of the Beatitudes” and educator Terry Webb, who has written both historical fiction and nonfiction books, will also take part.
Organizers plan to offer both breakfast and lunch foods for purchase. Individual breakfast casseroles made with potatoes, eggs, ham or bacon, and cheese, along with coffee, will be sold for breakfast. Hot dogs and chicken corn soup will be offered for lunch. of the Pathways homeschool community: exploring beyond childhood education to include education and involvement for the entire community as well. Historical interpretations and hands-on family activities make this event a learning experience, not only for children but the entire family. More than 300 artisans, historical interpreters and reenactors from all over the region will bring these early days back to life. Visitors can interact with the artisans, reenactors, crafts people, historians, musicians and interpreters of various traditional trades. School-age youngsters can participate in the homestead scavenger hunt, play early American games and create early toys and crafts in the “make and take” area. Adults and youngsters can register and compete in the Woods Walk Challenge. Here they can experience life in a primitive trappers’ camp, participate in musket shooting, compete in tomahawk throwing, archery and other early survival type skills and earn points. The Woods Walk Challenge will take the participants on a trail through the homestead woodlands and wetlands, along the stream and pond. Attendees will come across the 18th-century old-time trader settlement found there. Entering the 18th and 19th centuries, visitors will learn how to make paper, learn how the indigenous Lenni Lenape made tools, listen to the ageold art of storytelling and learn about outdoor open fire and inside hearth cooking.
The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will meet on Thursday, Oct. 26, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. and include a program titled “Mushroom Madness.” Drew Zimmerman, a local mushroom grower and businessman from Unkle Fungus Mushrooms, will speak on the types of mushrooms and processes for growing them. Guests are welcome to attend for a nominal donation.
Youngsters can put on early garb and have their photos taken. The early farmstead had to supply all its own needs. Artisans and interpreters will show how soap was made and hides were tanned. Visitors will learn how bread was baked in an outdoor beehive oven and how cooking was done in the homestead kitchen fireplace. They will learn about spinning and weaving, and be able to talk with an early laundress and seamstress. Visitors of all ages can explore the country store where they will find period type products for sale plus children can engage in the “make and take” area. Late 19th- and very early 20th-century industrial processes and equipment will be displayed and demonstrated. Everyone can meet the blacksmith and the metal casters and see early tractors and steam power. Food will be offered, including open fire homemade soups, hot dogs, snacks and baked goods. New this year will be freshly smoked pulled pork. Admission and parking are free. Brubaker Homestead is located about a quarter mile off Route 897 between Fivepointville and Terre Hill. Net proceeds from the event support the Pathways Hybrid-Learning School, a nonprofit education organization for children in grades three to 12. Lancaster County students of public, private, charter, online and home schools are eligible to compete in the junior (middle school) and senior (senior high school) divisions, with a variety of categories available. The Science Fair involves more than 100 volunteer judges, who are STEM educators and professionals from area companies and schools. The event will culminate on Thursday, March 7, 2024, and the grand and senior champions will advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair competition in May. North Museum will pay for all registration, fees, travel and accommodations for those champions. Registration and participation are free of charge to all students. One important factor in easing a child’s first-day anxiety is knowing the teacher. Gural said that children may meet their future kindergarten teachers at Play and Learns. “The kids have that familiar face,” she said. Knowing where the office and cafeteria are
located also translates into a stronger foundation when a child begins kindergarten the following fall. Readers who wish to learn more about the CVSD prekindergarten program may visit www.conestogavalley.org/ Page/4877.
