Bazaar Will Support Missions At Home And Abroad
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Jo Miller, Audrey Miller, Ida Dudyak, and Judi Eitnier are members of the United Women in Faith at Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church (BIHUMC), which is organizing the annual Crafter’s Bazaar. The event features 100% handmade crafts, and funds raised by the event support a number of mission projects, both locally and abroad.
The third 2022 BIHUMC Crafter’s Bazaar will be held at the church, 2620
Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-inHand, on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to crafts, the event will include gently used holiday decorations, more than 30 themed gift baskets, food, and a baked goods table. Prior to the first Crafter’s Bazaar, which was held in 2019, the church had held a holiday bazaar for more than 50 years.
According to Jo, more than 17 crafters will take part in this year’s event. Among the many craft items that will be available for purchase are woodcrafts, quilted items, framed jewelry art, candles, Christmas ornaments, rustic holiday wall hangings, handmade jewelry, herbal wreaths, lavender sachets, painted rocks, note cards, and collectible bears in several sizes.
Items for dogs that will be available for purchase include blankets and coats.
Knitted and crocheted hats, scarves, and critters will also be available. A few of the themed baskets will go up for bids in a silent auction.
In addition, Pillows With a Mission will sell pillows, with all proceeds benefiting school supply kits that go to Mennonite Central Committee. Last year, the group created 361 handmade bags filled with school supplies. This year, 410 bags have been made and filled. The group also purchases fabric to cut
and sew the LuoPads for UNTO, formerly Global Aid Network.
Among the local organizations and efforts that are supported by the group are Clare House, programs from the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church, Conestoga Valley Christian
Community Services, Weekend Blessings, and Water Street Mission.
The group has also collected socks, gloves, and mittens for the Salvation Army; donated to Apple Tree for Teachers and Hudson’s Heart for the Homeless; and donated personal care items for the Gino J. Merli
Veterans’ Center in Scranton.
Organizers plan to sell lunch items, including barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, and beverages.
Readers who have questions about the fundraiser may call 717-397-3047 and leave a message for a return call.

Mark Pearl’s childhood home in the greater northeast region of Philadelphia is not so many miles from Leola, but it is a different world culturally.
Pearl’s life now is spiritually distant from his upbringing as well. Pearl’s penchant for playing Messianic music represents his journey from an 11-year-old who did not want to attend Hebrew school and lobbied for a Christmas tree rather than a menorah.
By the time Pearl was 17, one of his mother’s sisters, who had married a Christian, had convinced his parents to attend a Baptist church. Pearl was not any more enamored of church than he had been with Hebrew school. “I’m looking at Big Ben on the wall (because) I can’t wait for 12 o’clock so I can fly out of there,” recalled Pearl.
“But God’s Word never goes void,” stated Pearl. “I would say I was born again in 1975.” From 1977 to 1979, Pearl did a stint in the Air Force. By the mid-1980s,

Vet21 Salute Honor Guard of Lancaster, looked into the situation, and when he learned there were 90 Merchant Marine veterans there, he did the research and raised the money to place a Merchant Marine monument. The ceremony dedicating that memorial was held on June 4.
In April, Snyder learned that no memorial to Vietnam veterans existed in the cemetery. “I said, ‘I’ve got to do this for my brothers,’” recalled Snyder, who set about raising the $7,700 needed to fund the memorial under the sponsorship of Blankets of Honor, a nonprofit that presents veterans with blankets depicting the branch they served in.
On Oct. 8, at noon, a ceremony was held at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to dedicate the memorial. The event opened with a flyover by the Liberty
War Bird Association Huey, a restored Vietnam helicopter now operating as a flying museum based at the Lancaster Airport. Mike Caimi, one of the founders of the Liberty War Birds, noted that taking part in the flyover fulfills goals of the organization. “The mission of the Liberty War Bird Association is to honor the legacy of our Vietnam veterans and provide a healing link to their past,” explained Caimi. “What better way to accomplish that goal than to participate in the dedication of the Vietnam veterans’ memorial at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, a hallowed site where not only are a number of Vietnam veterans buried, but two of our own recently deceased volunteers have been interred?” Caimi reported that he was on board for the flyover. “It was a solemn moment for our flight crew,” he recalled.
Amanda Spangenberg played the bagpipes and Snyder spoke. Manny Acuna of Blankets of Honor also spoke. Acuna later reflected on the

The invocation and prayer was given by the Rev. Grover DeVault, a Vietnam veteran. Speakers also included Vietnam veteran Chieu V Le, Dick

Snyder made special note of donors Carole Wiker, Lorie Kiser, Ken Pederson, and Abel & Son Roofing & Siding.

Pearl was living with Christian friends in Norristown who introduced him to the music of artist Keith Green. “(Green’s music) just blew me out of the chair,” said Pearl, who wanted to meet the singer until his friends informed him Green had been killed in a plane crash in 1982.
When Pearl’s parents moved to Lancaster County, he joined them. In 2015, he began attending the Seed of Abraham - a Messianic congregation of Jewish and Gentile believers, then meeting in Lititz. Pearl became familiar with the music of Paul Wilbur, known for his Messianic worship songs, and Lamb, a Messianic group comprising Joel Chernoff and the late
Rick Coghill. Pearl began covering their tunes in his presentations. “I consider myself a Messianic Jew,” said Pearl, who wears a yarmulke and prayer shawl during his musical performances. “A lot of people in this area don’t know the Jewish side of the Gospel, and that’s what I present to them,” he said. “When you hear Messianic music, you feel you’re in Israel.”
In addition to his solo presentations, Pearl has performed with the recently disbanded Lancaster Christian band known as Saved Renegade.
Readers who would like to learn more about Pearl’s music may contact him at 717-645-3628 or email mmpearl@comcast.net.

Team Falls Short in Leagues/Districts
BY ERIC PYLES
Success in high school sports can vary from school to school, even sport to sport but for most a trip to the postseason puts that season squarely on the successful side of the ledger. Under that simple definition, the Conestoga Valley girls’ volleyball team had a successful season, posting a 12-5 overall record while qualifying for both the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs and the District 3-4A playoffs. However, it does not feel that way as the Lady ‘Bucks dropped their final two matches, bowing out of the L-L postseason in the semifinals and dropping out of the district bracket in the opening round.
Despite those struggles the entire postseason was not lost as CV opened the LL playoffs on October 19th with a 3-0 win over Lancaster Mennonite.
“It was nice for the team to make the league playoffs and to get a win,” said head coach Devin Moore, adding, “something that we hadn’t done in a while.”
Twenty-six assists from Summer Getz and 12 Becca
Hartranft kills paved the way for easy wins of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-19. Emily Kornacki added 12 digs, Camdyn Mahler three blocks and Rhiannon Henry two aces to round out the victory.
The Lady Buckskins were back in action one day later, facing Elizabethtown in the L-L semifinals. CV’s L-L title hopes ended in the semifinals via a 3-0 loss to those Lady Bears.
“E-town played us hard and we hung with them for a bit but struggled once we fell behind in the third set,” noted Moore.
Getz tallied 22 assists, Har-
tranft collected 10 kills and Kornacki had 15 digs but it was not enough as Elizabethtown posted wins of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-10. Mahler added two blocks and Henry two aces.
Conestoga Valley’s season came to a screeching halt on October 25th in a 3-0 loss to Cumberland Valley in the opening round of the District 3-4A playoffs that Moore described as “pretty exciting and closely contested.”
The Lancaster county version of CV pushed the Dauphin county version to the limit but dropped 25-22, 29-27 and 26-24 finals to bow out of the postseason.
“The team played really hard and gave a ton of effort and fight the entire time. It was hard to see the season end, but it was one of the most complete matches that we had played,” said Moore.
Getz tallied 28 assists and two aces while both Hartranft and Kornacki finished with 19 digs. Hartranft added 12 kills while Mahler finished with 3.5 blocks TENNIS.
Conestoga Valley saw the girl’s tennis season extend into district doubles as Jade Flores and Paula ValverdeGomez earned the four seed in the 3A draw. They opened district play on October 21st, topping Claire Tian and Alicia Xie of Hershey in three sets. Tian and Xie took the opened set 6-3 but Flores and Valverde-Gomez bounced back with wins of 6-4 and 7-5 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
That quarterfinal match also took place on the 21st
with Valverde-Gomez falling to Valeria Sanchez and Hallie Guerrero of Reading. This one also went to three sets with Valverde-Gomez slipping a 7-5 victory between the 2-6 and 1-6 losses.
BOYS’ SOCCER
The boys’ soccer team jumped into the postseason on October 25th enjoying a dramatic penalty kick victory over Cumberland Valley.
“Quite a night for the ‘Bucks,” said head coach Dave Hartlaub.
The game may have ended with drama dripping everywhere, but for the majority of the contest it appeared as if CV’s first half score would hold up. Landon Sunday fed Rowan Aisenbrey who took care of the rest for a 1-0 lead. Jacob Carr’s three saves kept the Eagles at bay for most of the contest but a late Cumberland Valley score brought overtime. CV was able to hold through the extra sessions.
“Giving a goal up late like that is a huge emotional swing, but our boys stayed strong and fought through fatigue to weather the overtime periods,” Hartlaub said.
With the game still deadlocked at 1-1 the teams set up their penalty kick order. Aisenbrey was up first and converted with Carr’s diving save putting the ‘Bucks up 10. Caden Bredeman made it two in a row but Cumberland Valley kept pace this time. Nate Showvaker was up next, converting his kick only to see the Eagles match for a 3-2 penalty kick tally. Owen Riggle missed his attempt high but CV maintained their edge after Cumberland Valley
missed their kick as well. David Irwin’s shot was stopped, leaving the door cracked but Cumberland Valley’s attempt sailed high securing the 3-2 penalty kick victory.
FOOTBALL
The weather turning a bit colder and the leaves turning colors not only signals that autumn is here, it also means that the high school football season is inching close to completion. For Conestoga Valley that meant a week nine trip to the Reading area to battle Exeter Township. That trip resulted in a 38-10 loss leaving the Buckskins 4-5 overall and 2-3 in L-L Section Two action.
CV struggled to get their
offense going leading to a 429-136 total yardage hole with Exeter posting twice as many first downs, 10-5. That lack of offense left Nick Tran’s 34 yards tops in rushing and Jeff Fisher’s 80 yards top in receiving. Fisher also hauled in CV’s lone score, a 55-yard pass from Macoy Kneisley in the third that made it 24-10 heading into the final frame. The Eagles pulled away over that final stanza for the 38-10 final. David Irwin put CV on the board in the opening quarter, connecting on a 27-yard field goal.
FIELD HOCKEY
If the saying, ‘all good things come to an end’ is true in any way, then the field hockey team can count their 2022 season as good. The Lady ‘Bucks season came to a close on October 26th with a 2-1 overtime loss to Twin Valley in the opening round of the District 3-2A playoffs. Jamie Handwerger used a Sophia Livingston feed to put CV up 1-0 in the second but Twin Valley’s Hadley Munn answered later in the frame. The game remained a 1-1 deadlock until overtime when Munn struck again, this time securing the win. Elizabeth Talley finished with 13 saves in the loss.

The church building has more than 46 individual stained-glass windows symbolizing themes from the Bible and the local area. The window at the front of the chancel depicts a Bible to emphasize God’s Word as the authority for the congregants’ faith. Other win-
dows depict a dove, the Lamb of God, Christ calling His disciples to be fishers of men, a flaming heart showing God’s love for humanity, wheat and grapes symbolizing Communion, the cross and crown showing believers’ heavenly reward, a star representing the one that led the Wise Men to Christ, an olive branch signifying peace, and a shock of wheat representing prosperity. In several places are three circles to remind viewers of the Holy Trinity. One window depicts a Conestoga wagon, which carried pioneers to new lands to spread the Gospel.

New Life Church To Celebrate 40 Years
New Life Assembly of God, 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, will celebrate its 40th anniversary in Lancaster on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m. The community is invited to help the church celebrate its past and build toward the future.
On Nov. 2, 1982, a group of 57 local residents met at the home of John and June Armstrong for a time of devotion, fellowship, and meaningful discussion. As they gathered, there was a keen awareness that God was planting something within the hearts of these born-again believers. By
Dec. 28, 1982, a purchase lease agreement was signed for what would soon become New Life’s first church home at 10 Witmer Road, and services began there on Jan. 9, 1983. New Life experienced rapid growth, resulting in the need to relocate in less than a decade. By the fall of 1992, the church had begun construction on its current location.
From its inception, New Life Assembly of God has been committed to preaching, teaching, and modeling the truth, reality, and love of Jesus Christ. New Life’s mission is “to bring people into a

congregations on the East Coast. The property originally belonged to the German Reformed Church of the
United States, and services were conducted in German until 1838 when English became the favored language. The current masonry building, constructed in 1860, was fashioned in Romanesque Revival form with rectangular windows, red brick, and dark red adornments. In 1896, the rectangular windows were replaced with Gothic arches and stained glass, amounting to 35 stained-glass windows. The original bell still calls worshippers every Sunday morning. The main cemetery contains approximately 2,800 graves, with the earliest
life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.”
New Life Church meets weekly, providing ministry to and for people of all ages. Its Sunday morning worship service and children’s ministries begin at 10 a.m. Young adults gather at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, and youth and additional children’s activities run simultaneously with the church’s Wednesday adult Bible study at 7 p.m.
The church campus is located at the intersection of Old Philadelphia Pike and the Route 30 bypass. For more information, call 717-394-4015.
dating back to 1737.
The name Salem refers to peace, whereas Hellers refers to the vicinity of the original Heller farm. The church, frequently called Salem Hellers, will celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2025.
Salem Hellers exists to glorify God, to grow in the Spirit, and to go into the world with the Gospel. A worship service is held at 9:25 a.m. each Sunday, followed by Sunday school for adults. Guests are welcome.
For more information about the church, visit www.salemhellers.com or 717-656-9249.
Hahnstown Church To Host Speaker
Hahnstown United Zion Church, 900 Glenwood Drive, Ephrata, will host a presentation by Eleanor Isaacson on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 6:30 p.m. Isaacson is the co-author of “Dancing From Darkness: A World War II Survivor’s Journey to Light, Life, and Redemption.” In the book, Isaacson tells of
her separation from her parents at age 2, her experiences during World War II and the Nazi regime, her arrival alone to the United States at age 13, and more.
The program is open to the community. A freewill offering will be accepted. For more information, call Cleason Martin at 717-383-3820.
