Can You Spare A Kidney? BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
Servant Stage will hold a virtual First Look Extravaganza, featuring scenes from upcoming shows, on Nov. 20 in conjunction with the Extraordinary Give.
Servant Stage Schedules First Look For 2021 BY ANN MEAD ASH
ast Servant Stage First Look Extravaganzas have attracted up to 1,000 people. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s event will be held virtually, but Servant Stage executive director Jonathan Bauer is thinking positively about the impact of the reveal that will introduce the organization’s 2021 season. “The good thing about holding it online is that we are expecting more than 10,000 people (to view it),” said Bauer. “We have been doing virtual concerts all summer, and we have gotten really good response to that,” he added, noting that the shows have averaged 10,000 views per concert. The First Look Extravaganza will air live via Facebook and YouTube by searching for “Servant Stage” at those sites and via https://servantstage.org on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. The free show will be presented in coordination with the Extraordinary Give, an online giving event hosted by the Lancaster County Community
The staff of Servant Stage, including artistic director Wally Calderon and Bauer, will take turns hosting the show live from Alliance Church. The presentation will feature both live aspects and prerecorded segments. “During the few weeks leading up (to the show), we will prerecord a few (performances) with smaller groups,” explained Bauer. “We will have more than 100 performers on that evening, but for safety reasons not all 100 performers will be there in person.” Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Bauer sees a mix of virtual performances and live shows. “We are hoping to ease back into live shows,” he said, noting that during the first three months of 2021, shows will be virtual. “As we get into the spring, we have planned smaller productions to ease back in and to socially distance the cast,” he said. Bauer added that the organization has scheduled shows in a number of large parks next summer in hopes that live outdoor performances may be held at that time.

When Arch Street Center, 629 N. Market St., Lancaster, closed its doors on March 13, just prior to the COVID-19 state shutdown, administrators only expected to be closed for a few days while the floors were polished. On March 18, the organization, which is a membership-based day program for adults living with serious mental illness,

Foundation (LCCF). During the giving event, individuals can visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from more than 500 local nonprofit organizations, and make a secure online donation. According to Bauer, the reveal will include highlights of performances from the dozens of shows Servant Stage has planned for the next year. “(The presentation) usually ties in with a celebration of the past season as well, so there will be both a look back and a look ahead,” shared Bauer. The look ahead will include a variety of genres to appeal to a wide audience. “We have some big epic- type Broadway musicals, and we have some revuetype shows where all the focus is on the entertainment aspect,” said Bauer, who noted that a few smaller Broadway productions he called “dramadies” will be featured. “They are family friendly and range between dramatic and comedic,” he explained, adding that about half the season’s shows will be youth theater productions.
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) runs in families. Bill Blees, 56, of Manheim Township inherited it from his father, who died at age 60. Three of Bill’s half-siblings have the disease, and his children are at risk of having it as well. As the name implies, in PKD, the two bean-shaped organs that filter the blood and pass waste as urine are riddled with cysts. Inside and outside, Bill’s kidneys have developed growths the size of grapes. Each kidney is the size of a football. They should only be the size of his fist. “He’s in a lot of pain. His kidneys are pushing on the other organs,” said Bill’s wife, Diane. “He can’t hold his grandchildren or play with them like he wants to.”
Bill has worked for Yellow Freight for several decades. Because he is a truck driver, he is unable to take pain medication stronger than acetaminophen. More concerning than the pain, though, is the loss of renal function. Bill’s kidneys are functioning at only 15%, which means he is a candidate for dialysis. Unfortunately, as soon as Bill begins dialysis, he will be unable to work.

reopened with the sole goal of providing lunches to members. “We were worried about our own members (because) they are food insecure,” said Susan Lilly, executive director at Arch Street. “What (were) they going to do when community meals were shut down?” Initially, the center only planned to serve members, and the first week, between 30 and 40 lunches were served per day. “Then we started getting calls from other providers asking if they can send folks our way,” said Lilly. The center now hands out an average of 75 lunches daily Mondays through Fridays from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. using a touchless system. Lunches are placed on a table in the parking lot behind the center, and recipients wearing masks pick them up. A hand sanitizer table is nearby. “We try to make it as safe as possible,” said Susanne Materia, director of development. As

of October, Arch Street had served more than 10,000 lunches. Serving meals has been a small part of what Arch Street does since the center first opened in the basement of St. John Lutheran on Orange Street in 1983. Because the center’s entrance faced Arch Street, it became known as Arch Street Center. Materia reported that the initial vision for the center was conceived by a number of women who were caseworkers and families of patients. Materia noted that at the time of the founding mental health recovery involved a number of meetings and doctor appointments. “The founding mothers were very forward thinking, saying (patients) need to have a place to go between (those appointments) to gather, hang out, and have recreation,” Materia explained. Originally, the center was open from 3 to 8 p.m. and served sandwiches and

slow cooker meals. Prior to 2014, with the center outgrowing the dark basement, the administrators and the board began actively looking for a place Arch Street could call its own. The building on Market Street was purchased, and then a capital campaign was begun. “This building has been phenomenal,” said Materia. While the center was shut down this year, the staff went to work painting and adding the new logo to the walls. The reception area opens into a comfortable, brightly colored living room. There is type of atrium in the center of the building where Materia plans to hang member artwork. There is also a computer lab, a laundry, a locker room, a shower, and a game room. Since the county went to the green stage, the center has been open to a limited number of members from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. “Social isolation goes against the very fiber of what we are about,” said Lilly, who added that members must be screened and wash their hands upon entering. Arch Street’s membership model is based on a referral and a primary mental health diagnosis. A nominal membership fee is charged. With membership, all meals are free. Currently, the center is in need of food for lunches, including pasta, rice, tofu, chicken, ground beef, cheese, sour cream, whole milk, tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, condensed soups, and prepackaged desserts. Reclosable sandwich and snack bags are also needed. For more information about Arch Street Center, readers may call 717-3928536 or visit www.archstreet center.org.

DriveThrough Book Sale Set In Leola Lancaster Public Library will hold a drive-through book sale from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Leola Branch parking lot at 46 Hillcrest Ave., Leola. Bags of books will be sold for $10 and filled with a mix of more than five books from the Leola Branch collection. Bags will be prepacked in various categories, including fiction, nonfiction, inspirational, mysteries, children’s, and young adult. A limited number of bags will be available. Any child who attends the sale will receive one free book. Upon entering the library parking lot, customers should pull up to the curb. A volunteer will approach the car to take the customer’s order. Customers are asked to remain in their vehicle, with face coverings in place. No special title requests or browsing will be possible. The volunteer will drop the bags of books directly in the customer’s trunk. Cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted, and exact change is appreciated. The drive-through book sale will operate with COVID-19 safety measures in place. For example, all books were handled by one staff member who took precautions while bagging the books. The bags were filled over two weeks ahead of the sale. At the sale, volunteers and customers will wear masks at all times and maintain social distancing of 6 feet. Proceeds from the sale will support the operating budget for Lancaster Public Library.

Kidney from pg 1 The other option is a kidney transplant. Diane noted that transplant recipients are not allowed to be added to the transplant list until their kidney function drops to 20%. The rationale is that kidneys are expected to last 10 years, so delaying a transplant may give an individual more time before another solution is needed. Bill could wait five to eight years before organs from a deceased donor become available. However, the transplant of a kidney from a living donor could happen in just three months. Because she does not have Bill’s O+ blood type, Diane had hoped to participate in a paired donation, through
which she would donate to another recipient and then another donor would provide a kidney to Bill. However, she experienced a serious illness five years ago that now excludes her from donating. Instead, she has campaigned to find other individuals willing to make a donation. “We’ve been doing everything possible - placing yard signs, printing shirts, hiring a billboard - that we can do to find him a kidney before he goes on dialysis, Diane remarked. Bill’s insurance will cover the cost of the organ harvest and the transplant surgery, but it will not cover the income lost during the donor’s
or Bill’s recoveries. However, when someone with PKD responded to a sign and shared information about the transplant process with Bill and Diane, they included a referral to Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA), which provides fundraising support and assistance to people who need lifesaving transplants. Through COTA, the Blees family is raising funds to help the donor cover copays, gas costs for hospital and testing visits, lost income, and more. “If we don’t use all the money, we have the option to donate it to another person, Diane said, adding that Bill would bank the unspent funds for his children, should they eventually be diagnosed with PKD and need transplants.

Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death
by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and dayto-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her, recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. W hile Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it

Pauline H. Engle She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’ As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. W hen asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.â€? In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America” because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono

Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways
New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the See Jim Thorpe pg 7

After all, the many railways and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads accessible from town. Take to the water
for a challenging whitewater rafting ride or take a scenic kayak paddle through the gorge and surrounding waterways. Several outfitters are available to arrange tours to explore the region’s waters. Naturalists may want to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary. Romantic small-town charm, entrepreneurship, a legendary past and scenic vistas all make their home in the Pocono Mountains’ Jim Thorpe. Back in the spring of 2019, Cavod ballet director Stephanie Morales was thinking about Christmas. “‘The Nutcracker’ is big for the holidays,â€? said Morales. “I love (the show), but ‌ I thought there should be something else for the holidays.â€? W hen Morales went to sleep one night, she dreamed of a ballet. “(In the dream) were the names of the characters, their journey, and what it would be about,â€? said Morales, who woke up in the morning and wrote down everything she could remember. “I put it all together and brought it to Connie (Dienner, director) at Cavod (Academy of the Arts),â€? recalled Morales. “Our mission (at Cavod) is to create with purpose, so we wanted to offer (a holiday ballet)

This year, “Wonder will run from Friday, Nov. 13, through Sunday, Nov. 15, at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland. They are aided in their quest by three Christmas Lights, Twinkle, played by Jada Correll; Flicker, played by Emma Myers; and Pixie, played by Audrey Pavlica. As they search for the “wonder, the children visit the Toy Shoppe, the Christmas Tree Village, and a cathedral. at the end of August. Morales said the cast of 30 will include two adults this year, who will portray Ma and Pa Winters. Ma Winters will be played by Kelly Manana, and Pa Winters will be played by David Spolum. “This year, we are adding a sweet shop, which will be brand new, reported Morales. “In the sweet shop we have a baker and little gingerbreads played by 5- to7-year-olds. We have hot chocolate and gumdrops and peppermints (as well). Other scenes include a
snow blizzard and a sequence with choir dancers. “Wonder sold out when it was introduced at Cavod in 2019. “We are creating a new tradition for Cavod and the community, said Morales, who noted that through the show she wanted to provide New Holland with another outlet to experience the arts. “It’s been a really fun process, she said. His third trip to the end zone took place in the final quarter, a 16-yard rush, bringing him to a game-high, 205 rushing yards. In the second quarter, the only period that didn’t hold a Johnson touchdown, CV’s Zach Fisher stepped
up to receive a 22-yard TD pass from quarterback Macoy Kneisley. Nate Heck made good on each of the three PATs and added a firstquarter, 29-yard field goal to his resume. The Buckskin defense held Solanco to just one end zone visit, which occurred in the second quarter. “The defense played outstanding. The Falcons jumped out to an early lead with a goal after just 16 minutes on the field. After trailing 1-0 for 39 minutes of the contest, CV’s Megan Slingluff netted the equalizer and the momentum shift carried into overtime, where Amanda Yingling supplied the game winning goal on a free kick. “That was a great game to end the season on,” celebrated head coach Keith Nagley, who will be stepping away from the helm of CV varsity girls’ soccer at the conclusion of this season. finished the season on the plus side with an overall 8-7 record and a 6-6 mark in L-L League competition. “It was a good building and learning season,” coach Devin Moore reflected. “The girls came in with a determined mindset to improve throughout the course of the year. We exhibited tremendous growth.” Comprised of mostly underclassman, and backed by a JV club that went 11-4 this season, the squad has plenty of room for growth in coming years, and will only graduate one senior this season. “I want to thank our one senior, Joanna Hutt, for her four years of involvement in the program,” noted Moore. “The program, and I, would like to wish her luck moving forward.” Giving a glimpse at future potential, Buckskin sophomore Becca
Hartranft racked up some impressive stats over the course of the season to lead in three categories with 115 kills, 31 aces, and 79 digs. Fellow sophomore, Madison Williams, proved to be a force at the net, collecting 33 blocks. FIELD HOCKEY Girl’s field hockey concluded their regular season, boasting nine wins and only four losses, outscoring their opponents by a margin of 43-10. Keeper Brooke Eberly’s 53 saves was a huge part of that lopsided statistic, only allowing 10 goals over the course of 13 contests, and also earning three shutouts. On offense, Abby Morley notched the most CV goals, with 13, and dished out four assists. A total of eight different Lady Bucks scored goals throughout the season.

Local Author Shares His Faith Journey In New Book that at some point everyone wrestles with faith. Everyone - just by our nature - wants answers about why we are here, what we do with the time we have and what comes after this.” Weagley, a resident of Atglen and a first-time author, describes the book as a memoir and statement of faith. “I was raised in a devout Catholic family and was blessed to experience a wonderful childhood. Sadly, when I was 14, my father suffered a brain aneurysm, resulting in a disability,” he said. “We were angry at God and could not understand how He could have let this happen to our
family. Unfortunately, we turned away from our faith and the church community. With the help of friends, the benefit of numerous trials and tribulations and the grace of God, I managed to rediscover my faith.” Weagley, whose background is in sports medicine, said he never expected to write a book but felt compelled to do so after retirement. “When I retired, I knew I had more time; I prayed and it came back loud and clear that is what I need to be doing,” said Weagley. “(Until recently), I thought reading and writing were a necessary evil. I now enjoy reading, and

In this constant onthe-go world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at times. Shopping habits have drastically changed due to an increase in big box retailers and a boom in online purchasing. As a result of that, many have noticed something missing from their holiday traditions, taking away from the spark of the season. Making time for a tangible, personal shopping experience is beneficial. There has never been a better time for nostalgia than now. What sets the Shady Maple Gift Shop apart from other stores is that it brings back fond memories of yesteryear. Visiting the Shady Maple Gift Shop is like stepping back in time to an almost forgotten era. Friendly and courteous employees greet you
