embers of Zion Lutheran Church in Leola love to share the love of Christ with the community. “In August, (we hold a) Water Slide Day, and we like to have souvenirs for the kids to take with them to know that Jesus is with them,” explained church member Pat Kohler. “Over the years, we have collected a lot of those kinds of things.” Instead of just leaving those giveaway items in storage, organizers of the Holiday Craft Show decided to add a rummage sale to the annual event. The Zion Lutheran Holiday Craft Show and Rummage Sale will be held at the church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Popular activities such as the cookie walk and cookie decorating will return, along with
decorative tins, notebooks, cups, items used to make crafts and school supply items. Craft kits for children and painted wooden waterfowl replicas are among the gathered items. “We have so much to offer our community from our storage,” said Kohler, who explained that rummage sale items will be available by donation. “It’s take-what-you-want and paywhat-you-will,” said Kohler, who noted donation buckets will be available on the sale tables. “We are very excited about getting these items into the community’s hands,” she said. “(Buyers) won’t be disappointed. Everyone will go home with something.” The cookie walk, which has long been a tradition at the bazaar, will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until the cookies are gone. “Some people come just for the cookie
walk,” pointed out Kohler. Children may take part in a cookie decorating activity for a nominal fee, and a special shopping area for children will also be offered. Vendors and church members will provide donated items for door prizes, and door prize winners will be chosen every half hour. Williams said that food items will be available for purchase at the show, including vegetable soup, chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs and sauerkraut. Past craft shows have raised $2,500, which was donated to Lutheran Disaster Relief. Williams said she hopes to raise that much for Lutheran Disaster Relief again this year. Readers who would like to know more about the event may visit www.zionleola.org or call 717-656-9200.

On Nov. 11, the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) held a Veterans Day breakfast in the Veteran’s Hall of the War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, with more than 30 veterans, spouses, and guests taking part in the observance. The event was opened by ULTWMA vice president Tim Chopp, who introduced pastor Bruce Tully of Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers. Tully offered the opening prayer, saying, “We are grateful for (our veterans) for their dedication, discipline, faithfulness, and courage. From them may we learn the virtues of selfless service … unswerving faithfulness to country … perseverance in difficult and challenging situations.” Tully continued, “We lift up to your care those families who have lost a member of the armed forces in the line of duty. May your constant presence and help be theirs.” The prayer was followed by the playing of the national anthem. Each of the hymns of the various military branches was played. Veterans were encouraged to rise when they heard the hymn of the branch in which they had served. Breakfast consisted of sausages,

pancakes, coffee cake, juice, and coffee. Following breakfast, Chopp introduced Lancaster County Commissioner Joshua Parsons. Parsons, who served in the U.S. Army at Fort Benning (now Fort Moore), described being trained to pack his parachute before his first jump, with particular attention to packing the rucksack, which hits the ground first. “You have to rig it carefully,” said Parsons. “If you have lots of gear hanging, it can get caught on the door (when you jump).” Unfortunately, Parsons did not give the class his undivided attention, and when it was time to pack the gear, he was unsure of the technique. Parsons thought the issue would be fixed for him, but when he approached the plane, a sergeant told him “You rigged it. You ride it.” After experiencing high anxiety, Parsons

Acolytes, clergy and vergers from five local parishes attended the National Acolyte Festival.
Fifteen acolytes from five parishes in the Lancaster Convocation attended the National Acolyte Festival on Oct. 7. Along with their respective clergy, vergers and parents, as well as a few grandparents, the acolytes traveled to the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., to participate in the festival and a grand procession. The event was the first National Acolyte Festival since 2019, when the festivities went on hiatus due to COVID-19. The cathedral was filled with more than 500 acolytes from across the country and included groups from various denominations. After the procession, which included acolytes, clergy and vergers
from every parish in attendance, attendees enjoyed worship, music, prayer, a message and Communion. Attendees then had opportunities to explore various workshops, including Now and Forever Windows Activities, Liturgical Streamer Making and the LEGO Exhibit, where each acolyte was invited to help place a brick on what those gathered hoped would be the world’s largest cathedral made of LEGO bricks at over 13 feet long once complete. The Lancaster Convocation is made up of 10 parishes within Lancaster County. Those represented at the National Acolyte Festival were Hope Episcopal Church of Manheim, Saint James Episcopal Church
of Lancaster, Saint John’s Episcopal Church of Lancaster, Saint Paul Episcopal Church of Columbia, and Saint Thomas Episcopal Church of Lancaster.

LCSWMA urges proper disposal of batteries The Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has launched a public education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel are found in many common household items, including power tools, toys, cellphones, laptops, watches, vape devices and electric toothbrushes. If a rechargeable battery becomes damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark or explosion. Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during
