Education foundation awards grants

Responding to the mental health needs of teenagers CON

BY ANN MEAD ASH

Ambur Gregorio (left) and Susannah Moore are working to help create safe spaces for teenagers to share mental health issues.

Today’s teenagers are facing issues unfamiliar to their parents and grandparents, and according to Susannah Moore, clinical social worker/therapist with Integrate Therapy and Wellness Collective in Bird-in-Hand, that can make it hard for generations to relate. “Those of us who graduated high school before COVID-19 hit and before social media took over the way it has, simply can’t understand what it means to be a teen today,” said Moore. As a former school social worker, Moore is especially familiar with the issues facing students. “(Teenagers) have had their entire world shifted over and over,” Moore commented. “They haven’t had the sense of stability that most of us had.”

The Conestoga Valley Education Foundation (CVEF) has awarded nearly $50,000 in grants during its 2023 fall grant cycle. CVEF officially approved the grants at its Oct. 17 meeting. Among the grants are those encouraging enrichment in music, community service, and displays of student art. Grants pertaining to education in music included the Tech Integration for Real World Applications and Reflective Processes in Music for students at Brownstown Elementary School. The goal of this grant is to help bring students’ learning into

the 21st century with a more enriching and efficient learning environment. Recording equipment will allow students to listen to their performances, as well as integrate with teachers’ laptops and students’ elecronic tablets. At Fritz Elementary, students will benefit from the Drums Alive! Grant, which will allow for the creation of cross-curricular lessons in physical education and music classes. The program combines fitness and drumming in a format that promotes physical, emotional, and social health. At the Gerald Huesken Middle School (GHMS),

building’s music wing. At Conestoga Valley High School, the Steinway Restoration and Rededication Concert will help choir students create a collaborative performance experience and celebrate the rededication of the restored Steinway piano. The Art and Community - Screenflex Artwork Displays grant will give the GHMS students a flexible way to display student artwork and receive constructive criticism and advice from their community to aid in the development of their art skills. Students will also be able to analyze why and how an exhibition may influence ideas, beliefs, and experiences. At Fritz Elementary, students who take part in the “Little Hats Big Hearts” program will have the opportunity to knit baby hats to donate locally to learn the values of community aid and selflessness. A CVEF grant covered the startup costs of this program. Life Skills classes at the GHMS will receive startup money through the Brew Up Coffee and Specialties grant. The funds will help establish a coffee cart at the middle school to provide students with intellectual and developmental disabilities a real-life, hands-on learning experience. Students will gain experience with communication, problemsolving, money management, and customer service. CVEF will award a second round of grants in the spring of 2024.

first official collaboration with Costarella, but he has worked with Valentine on various projects in the past to advocate for Lancaster County’s homeless population. Valentine recently contacted the city council to raise awareness for issues such as a lack of public restrooms and emergency shelters. City officials have since placed a portable bathroom in the parking lot of an emergency shelter on North Prince Street, which is maintained by participants in the Hands Up Partners program. “We’re all very concerned about our homeless neighbors living on the streets, especially with winter coming,” said Valentine, who will receive donations for Costarella’s programs during the next Circle Legacy Center meeting. program after he heard someone was handing out sandwiches at Binns Park downtown. “I never knew how many folks were there who were in need,” Costarella said. “I saw the need, enjoyed the people, and I just wanted to make sure they knew someone out there loved them.” In April, Costarella partnered with Lancaster County Food Hub to create a second program, Hands Up Partners. Through the collaboration, the nonprofit organization raises money that Costarella uses to provide people without housing with a weekly stipend; in exchange, the recipients join him in cleaning projects at local parks and community areas. “The program has helped a lot of participants find jobs by acting as a stepping stone,” said Costarella. Valentine and Costarella met several years ago through their shared passion for community service. The program on Dec. 8 will be Circle Legacy Center’s

In September, Circle Legacy Center reintroduced its monthly programs for the first time in multiple years. The organization was founded in 2007 by Victoria Valentine of Millersville with the primary goal of educating the local community on the culture and history of Native Americans, in addition to drawing attention to the modern concerns they face. Although Circle Legacy Center has no official headquarters, it often partners with organizations such as Blue Rock Heritage Center in Washington Boro and the Conestoga Area Historical Society. The nonprofit’s regular programs are open to the public, and they are held on the second Friday of each month at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. Although each of the program’s meetings have always highlighted a specific issue that relates to Native American communities, Valentine decided to shift the upcoming session to focus on helping those who are experiencing homelessness in the city. On Friday, Dec. 8, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Circle Legacy Center will host Dave Costarella at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster. Costarella will share information about two programs he has created to support those struggling with housing in the area. Costarella created the first program, My People on the Streets, eight years ago to provide homeless Lancastrians with supplies such as food and warm clothing. Costarella created the

Pilgrims Mennonite Church leadership team for its approval of the activity. People from the church were enthusiastic with the idea and they soon recruited volunteers ages 14 to 75. Some other local churches are helping Pilgrims Mennonite by volunteering in various ways. Burnett said that after this first program, he hopes that even more churches will become involved in the future. People are asked to park in the lot by Pavilion 1, near the playground. There, volunteers will direct individuals to the walking routes. Attendees are encouraged to bring flashlights. In the case of rain, the event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16. A Christmas luminaria walk will be held in Akron’s Roland Park on Lion Lane on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. Walks of various distances will be available, such as onequarter mile and one-half mile. At any time during the event, participants may walk through the pine forested path illuminated by 600 electric tea lights, while small ensembles play music along the way. After walking among the pines, people will be directed to stroll to Pavilion 1, where hot cocoa, cookies and caroling will await. Local folk vocalists the Harmony Singers, will sing Christmas carols, and song sheets will be available for any who wish to join in. Tom Burnett had the idea for the event and asked the

out their own mental health.” Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), noted that communication is key, but not always easy. “Teens are struggling with feeling connected and heard,” she said. Moore agreed, saying, “These kids need safe spaces to process all that’s happened,” she noted. “Teens need to be accepted by their parents and to be capable of discussing mental health with their parents.” Ambur Gregorio, clinical social worker/therapist with Integrate Therapy, pointed out that parents may struggle to understand their child’s situation. “(Teenagers) are dealing with so much that their parents didn’t have to deal with, (and parents) don’t know how to help their kids walk through this,” she said, noting that after working many years in adult corrections, one of her goals is to help break cycles of trauma and abuse that may exist in families. According to McDevitt, help is

available when parents and school staff members respond to student needs. “Lancaster is very fortunate to have a wealth of resources, but we need to ensure that kids feel safe sharing with the adults in their lives,” she said. “They need to know not only that they will be heard, but also that we will take action to provide them with tangible support.” Moore echoed McDevitt’s thoughts, saying, “As a therapist working with teens, I am primarily interested in giving them that space where they feel believed and trusted and respected.” She praised area schools for their efforts in this area. “Schools are doing an incredible job of integrating mental health awareness into the school system,” she said. McDevitt noted that breaking the stigma surrounding mental health is a necessity. “Parents and other adults engaging with youth need to become comfortable with uncomfortable conversations and situations when it comes to their children’s mental health,” she said.
