The Lititz Area Community Choir’s upcoming presentation of “A Celtic Christmas” promises to be an event worth singing about. “We’re trying to present festive, holiday music that is familiar to audience members,” said Debbie Kline-Smith, the choir’s director. “(The concert) takes them on a journey of another style of music, which is very popular right now.

People seem to enjoy that style of music, and I thought it would be great to bring a different style of music to Lititz. We’re doing it in English, but this style of music makes it a different feel for the holidays. I think people will leave there feeling ready for Christmas.” The Lititz Area Community Choir, Warwick Alumni and Friends will perform “A Celtic Christmas” at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, at a new venue, Warwick See Christmas concert pg 5

The ambiance of the event will be enhanced by the two-bagpipers-one-drum Ceòl Nèamh Pipe Band and the talents of dancers sprinkled throughout. “Singing brings great joy to the people performing and listeners,” said KlineSmith. “Music brings people together like no other art form. Sometimes we don’t know what the music is doing for us, but it is definitely doing it. T here ’s a warmth that comes from people being together at a performance.” Since the middle of September, the choir has been rehearsing and practicing at Brunner ville United Methodist Church for 90 minutes each Thursday to prepare for its performance. “A lot of these singers are very dedicated,” said Kline-Smith. “I think the joy of singing is with them, maybe since they started. They feel joy in the perfor-
mance. I think it’s important to them to be involved with something they’ve always loved. Many of them appreciate the education behind it.” “It’s people from all walks of life, and it’s great to see them all come together,” she added. “It’s very enjoyable to see that mix of people.” “A Celtic Christmas” will be the choir’s third holiday concert since being formed in September of 2022, and fifth overall. The choir is currently formulating plans to present a rock ‘n’ roll-themed concert in the spring of 2025. “Our goal is to always sing with our best quality of sound,” said K lineSmith, a former longtime music educator in the Warwick School District. “The community has really come out to support us. I think it’s becoming a tradition because they know we’re striving for excellence. When people see quality, they’re going to want to come back.”

A Christmas luminaria walk coordinated by Pilgrims Mennonite Church will be held in Roland Park, 221 N. 11th St., Akron, on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Attendees may choose from two paths to take this year - a lantern-lit path through evergreens or a level path from the p a r k i n g l o t fo r e a s i e r walking. More luminarias have been added this year for a total of more than 800 electric candle luminarias. The blocks that give weight to the paper bags were borrowed from M a i n s p r i n g o f E p h ra ta’s Winters Leadership Memorial Committee, which holds an annual luminaria walk on Veterans Day. Carols, pop-up musical groups, homemade cookies, hot cocoa, and cider will all be part of the event. Hilltop Harmony will be among the performers at the event. The musical group includes Dave Lefever, Dennis Maust, Sue Stamm Miller, and Becca Rupley with Laura Miller. Additionally, a trio of Mae Beidler, Josiah Gascho, and Lily Zimmerman and a quartet of Dylan Chares, Ellie Cunalata, Abby Martin, and Elyse Zimmerman will perform. Barry Kreider will be the master of ceremonies this year. Many churches and businesses have become event sponsors, and volunteers from churches are contributing in many ways, such as making cookies, providing music, and serving as guides. About 400 people attended the first walk in 2023. People are asked to park in the lot by Pavilion I, near the playground. There, volunteers will be on hand to direct people. The event is free of charge. Attendees are advised to bring a flashlight. The luminaria walk will be canceled if there is wintry weather or rain that makes travel unsafe. CVCCS’ Weekend Blessings program provides food two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners and snacks - for qualified, low-income individuals in kindergarten through grade 12 in the Conestoga Valley School District. The food items - mainly easy-to-prepare meals - are gathered and bundled by volunteers at CVCCS, 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, and transported to the six buildings in the school district, where they are distributed to the kids by guidance counselors on Fridays during the school year. “Things have changed,” said Barrett. “With the rise of single-parent households, sometimes kids are having to fend for themselves. be something they can make for themselves. It’s easy-tomake meals, and it allows them to have sustenance over the weekend.” T h e re a re c u r re n t l y more than 100 Conestoga Valley students receiving food through the Weekend Blessings program, many of whom get free or reducedpriced meals during the school week. “ To b e a b l e to h ave food, it’s not a right, it’s not guaranteed,” said Barrett. “People are fighting with hunger issues in our country, and a lot of it is rural. Seventy percent of Lancaster County poverty is outside the city. A lot of communities in the county have something like this associated with them. The proof is in the numbers. When students sign up with their guidance counselors, it allows us to gauge the need.” CVCCS is cur rently accepting donations of food and money for its Weekend Blessings program. The program is in need of items like Chef Boyardee spaghetti and meatballs, canned soups, ramen noodles, fruit cups and Hormel prepackaged meals, and a complete wish list of Weekend Blessings items can be found at www.cvccs.org. “We would love any donations,” said Barrett. “We are constantly out of stuff, and we find ourselves making grocery store trips. As the price of food has gone up, so has our demand. As grocery prices have gone up, families are having a hard time feeding themselves. We need our community to be involved and help support it. We need help, and it’s all year. It’s more than a drive once a year.” CVCCS also sponsors a food bank, a clothing bank , a summer lunch pro g ram for students, spiritual meetings, adult mentorship programs and financial counseling and literar y programs. The Weekend Blessings program was founded not long after CVCCS moved into its current building in 2014. “This problem isn’t going anywhere,” said Barrett. “This program isn’t aimed at eliminating this issue because there is no way it can be. It’s a sustainability kind of thing.”

school assembly. Students voted on a candidate to send to Spooknacht for the county-wide competition, and contestants in the final pageant showcased a talent and answered questions in front of a panel of judges. Ross said she does not know when or why the annual event officially stopped taking place. The or ig ins of Spooknacht be gan several decades before Ross won in 1965; Ross’ mother won the title of Spooknacht Queen in the 1940s. “I think women just became less interested in participating in beauty pageants,” Ross speculated. “Some people used it as a stepping stone for other contests. I’m a dancer, so I just entered everything I could.” Lancaster County may never hold a Spooknacht
celebration a gain, but despite vanishing with almost no trace, the bygone tradition will always hold a place in the area’s long history of unique festivities.

Lancaster County has a long history of unique traditions and community-centered events. From annual celebrations such as Maize and Snitz Fest in Lampeter and East Petersburg’s Blues Festival to county-wide programs like the Miss Lancaster County pageant, every town contributes to the area’s distinct culture. Many annual traditions have withstood the test of time and continue to be held today, but some events, such as Spooknacht, have been lost to time. In 2024, few people have ever heard of Spooknacht. But prior to the 1970s, the annual event was highly anticipated by community members, and it involved every school in the county. According to archived photographs and clippings from old newspapers, Spooknacht took place every year around Halloween, and the event was organized by the former Lancaster Jaycees. O ne pho to g ra ph from LancasterHistory’s archive, believed to have been taken during an event circa 1950, shows members of the Jaycees serving food from a vehicle with the words “Jay-cee Schpookmobile” painted on its side. The only information provided by the caption reads, “Official Lancaster Jaycees Schpookmobile, used during the
Spooknacht celebration at Halloween.” Julia Whitfield, a lifelong resident of Lancaster and manager of Mennonite Life’s visitor center, said she has no memor y of Spooknacht. According to Whitfield, most members of Lancaster’s Mennonite community rarely celebrate Halloween or trick-or-treat, but instead hold a harvest celebration every fall. Pete Kingsley, one of the former members of the local Jaycees club, said he has no memor y of Spooknacht either. After following a trail of old newspaper clippings and bits of information in Willow Street Church’s archive, local historian Eric Schubert discovered that his acquaintance Linda Ross won the Spooknacht Queen contest in 1965. “It was a big celebration at McCaskey High School that involved all the schools in the county,” said Ross, a Penn Manor High School alumna who now resides in Marietta. “It was accompanied by other activities, but the contest was a huge deal. It was driven by the Jaycees, and that year’s Miss Pennsylvania and Miss L ancaster always attended.” Ross recalled that each L ancaster County high school held its own Spooknacht queen contest, during which contestants would display their talents at a

Winter safety tips for drivers The Pennsylvania Turnpike (PA Turnpike) has posted winter safety tips for drivers. People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather. State law requires windows and mirrors to be completely clear to improve visibility. People should also clear their car’s hood, roof, and trunk. When driving in inclement winter weather, avoid sudden stops and starts, slow down, and increase following distance. Cruise control should never be used when driving on snow, and drivers should never crowd or pass a plow truck. When driving in winter, it is important to have an emergency kit handy. For suggestions of what to include in an emergency kit, visit https://tinyurl.com/ WinterEmergencyKit. In addition, the Pennsylvania State Police has offered advice for anyone involved in a crash. People should move their vehicle as far as possible from the travel lanes if the vehicle can be driven; remaining in the lanes of travel is extremely dangerous. If a vehicle cannot be driven due to damage or if one of the involved parties is injured, Pennsylvania law requires that the crash be reported to the police. To report an accident, dial 911 right away. If a person’s vehicle is disabled in the lane of travel or stuck in the travel lanes due to snow or ice, the person should remain inside the vehicle with his or her seatbelt on and the hazard lights activated. If it is not safe to remain inside the vehicle, people should assess the situation and get the driver and any passengers to a place of safety such as behind a barrier or guardrail. When exiting a vehicle, move as quickly as possible and do not remain in the travel lanes or near the vehicle. When encountering a crash
scene, drivers are required by law to move over if possible and always slow down. First responders will be active at the scene and focused on helping those involved in the crash and getting the road back open. Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles across the commonwealth, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras. To report an incident or other emergency on the PA Turnpike, dial *11 via mobile phone.

Last spring, Welcome Home T h r i f t & More , located in the IronSpire Complex at 2800 N. Reading Road, Suite 430, Adamstown, held the Oasis Makers Market as a fundraiser. “It took off well,” said Alisha Wambolt, manager of Welcome Home, a thrift store that was originally known as Second Street and founded by Debbie Hollinger to support HOME International, w h i c h p ro v i d e s g ro u p homes for girls in India. Alisha shared that her daughter, Maddie, oversaw the fundraiser, attracting 25 vendors to the event. “ We thought, ‘ W hat if we were to bring some of those vendors inside our shop?’” explained Alisha. “ I t wo u l d g i ve p e o p l e who are not thrifters an opportunity to shop local.” Alisha and Maddie asked a few of the vendors if they would like to rent spots in the shop, and cleared out
an area near the front of the store to begin hosting area makers. “It has gone crazy,” said Alisha of the section of the store now called “The Oasis.” “I love (this concept) because it is our mission to help those in need, and there’s a different need inside this room,” Alisha pointed out, noting that some of the makers are stay-at-home moms, who would like to use their creativity to contribute to the family budget. “One (vendor) is in her early 50s, and she was diagnosed with Alzheimer ’s disease,” said Alisha, who explained that the vendor gave up her job and began learning graphic design, which came naturally to her. “She’s making cards.” Another maker is a vet who has PTSD. A display with her story is located along one wall of T he Oasis. “The Oasis gives us a chance to come alongside local people and showcase their talents,” Alisha said.

“Maddie does a fantastic of vendors,” shared Alisha. job (attracting a) variety Wa l k i n g t h ro u g h T h e Oasis, Alisha pointed out displays of baked goods, slippers, antiques and collectibles, pottery, jewelry, metalwork, plants, herbal teas, soaps, and sweaters. Other displays featured photography, knitted and crocheted items, leather bags and personal-size sewn bags, and pottery in different styles. “ We’ve encouraged our vendors to keep in mind that we’re a thrift as they price their items,” Alisha stated. Creators taking par t in The Oasis are not all seasoned businesspeople, according to Alisha. One vendor who makes earrings is 15 years old. “We have a 13-year-old who makes bracelets in a perfect price range for kids,” said Alisha, who noted that the shop currently features about 40 vendors. “We promote them, and they promote us,” she said. Welcome Home Thrift & More and The Oasis are open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information may be found at http://welcomehome thrift.com.
