n Nov. 13, students who participate in the WCVM television station at the Gerald Huesken Middle School (GHMS) in Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) presented “WCVM This Evening” during the open house at the recently constructed school. “WCVM This Evening,” hosts Logan Jack, Delaney Rivera, and Lilana Poston kicked off the show, which was broadcast on monitors throughout the school. Interviewer Alyse Biuckians spoke with principal Rachel Metzinger about the activities available to those visiting the school, including the art show being held on the lower level. The school has nine pods, and each has five rooms with movable walls to give teachers more flexibility. The technology education facility was highlighted in a special segment that focused on sixth-, seventh-, and eighthgrade levels using basic and advanced tools to learn problem solving, layout, and design concepts. Also pointed out were the printer room with both largeformat and 3D printers and the design classroom where students work with computer-aided design (CAD) software. Biuckians also interviewed new CVSD superintendent Daniel Hartman, asking about his first months in the position. Hartman noted he was impressed by the strong community, diversity, and programs to help students in their chosen pathways.

Tim Farrell, one of the leaders of the Lancaster Prayer Breakfast, which was held for the second year on Nov. 3, said that when the committee organized under the Leaders of Faith Foundation, the goal was to make the event unique, with prayer as the key component. The group decided to focus on six areas - business, government, art/media, education, family, and church - and ask a community leader to lead prayer on each of those segments. Each speaker asked table groups to pray on a subject and then concluded by leading the gathering of more than 400 in prayer. Master of ceremonies Tracey C. Jones, president of Tremendous Leadership and T3 Solutions, opened the event, saying, “The Lancaster Prayer Breakfast endeavors to further the rich heritage and spiritual guidance handed down by the Founding Fathers … and magnify Jesus Christ through unified prayers.” Worship music was provided by Dave Ross, pastor of worship ministries at Calvary Church, who read from Philippians 2 and led three songs. Don Hoover, retired CEO and current facilitator of Business Community Network, prayed for the business community, noting that Jesus said, “I must be about My Father’s business.” “It’s crucial for us to understand God’s purpose and will for us as individuals,” he said. Sen. Ryan Aument asked attendees to join him in lifting up the government - elected and appointed officials, first See Prayer Breakfast pg 6

It is the latest offering in Creative Works of Lancaster’s series of sock puppet film parodies, with previous shows including “Sock Puppet Psycho,” “The Sockfather,” “Silence
of the Socks,” and “Jaws to the World.” Creative Works utilizes a pay what you decide ticketing model with no fixed ticket prices. Attendees pay what they think the experience was worth after the show. Tickets can be reserved at www.creative lancaster.org. decline of ruffed grouse and scarlet tanager. The students’ research studies the causes of decline over a period of decades, methods to gather data, and possible solutions to reverse the decline of these birds in Pennsylvania. Students Jacob Goldman and Randall Koleck are studying the effects of habitat management on ruffed grouse, including using various technologies to determine the effects of various types of habitats on grouse occupancy. Student Tyler Hodges, specializing in avian ecology, is studying high-quality breeding habitat that supports scarlet tanagers and how forestry management practices affect tanagers both with positive and negative outcomes. A short business meeting will precede the program. The event is free and open
to the public. The club will also sponsor four Lancaster County Christmas Bird Counts. Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count, with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders, including backyard watchers, can help with the citizen science effort. The data collected have been invaluable for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy. Participants will be assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders must register with the appropriate contact person prior to the event to determine if their home is within the count circle. The local events and their contact people are

Participants must register by calling the park at 717-295-2055. For more information, contact John Lahr, 717-205-3030 or johnlahr324@gmail.com. Adults without kids are welcome. Riding in support of veterans Fifteen years ago, Tyler Stumpf and his friend Jeff Andrews were sitting around “solving the world’s problems,” Stumpf recalled with a laugh, when they came up with an idea. “We said, ‚ÄòLet’s go for a ride on New Year’s Day,’” said the avid motorcycle rider. “A few other people heard about our plans, and we had 11 participants that first year.” The group decided to raise money with the ride, donating the proceeds to the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “I think we might have raised $400 that first year,” Stumpf said. “This event turned into much more than I ever could have expected.”
He’s not kidding. Last year’s New Year’s Day ride featured the most participants ever - upward of 500 bikes and 600 people - and raised more than $32,000. So far, the group has donated more than $270,000 to veterans. This year’s ride will take place on Monday, Jan. 1, with registration beginning at 10 a.m. at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. The ride will leave from the Legion at 1 p.m., and participants will follow a 25-mile route along the Susquehanna River, ending at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St. Members of the ladies’ auxiliary will serve
A ride to benefit veterans will feature hundreds of motorcycles.
Band to perform Christmas concert The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band will perform a variety of Christmas music on Sunday, Dec. 17, at 2:30 p.m. at Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster. The concert will feature songs such as “In the Bleak Midwinter,” “Gesu Bambino,” “I Wonder As I Wander,” “Christmas Sketches,” “Home for the Holidays,” “Huron Carol,” music from “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “We Three Kings,” “Christmas Sing-Along,” “Sleigh Ride,” and “Do You Hear What I Hear?” A freewill donation will be accepted. The band consists of 35 members and is directed by Howard Boots. For more information, call 717-4137126 or visit www.lscband. com.
breakfast at the Mount Joy Legion before the ride, and a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served at the Elizabethtown Legion at the ride’s conclusion. Fun traditions at the event include Baby New Year, when a participant is chosen for the honor and must attend in a baby costume and sash. “Baby New Year will arrive at the Mount Joy Legion at noon,” Stumpf said, noting that this year’s honoree is Jeff Shultz. At the end of the ride, an auction will be held. “We’ll have items donated by local businesses and individuals,” Stumpf said. “This year is going to be our biggest auction yet.” Proceeds from auction sales as well as the sale of T-shirts and patches will also benefit the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Stumpf noted that the event has become much more than just a fun afternoon bike ride. “It’s really become a community event over the past 15 years,” he said. “Businesses and organizations support us, individuals participate, and people in the community come out to see all the motorcycles pass by. That’s got to be one of my
favorite parts - seeing the people out along the route.” The ride is open to anyone who is interested in participating, and people may participate with any vehicle of their choice,
including cars or trucks. “All of the proceeds for this event stay in our local area,” Stumpf said. “When you’re donating, you’re helping somebody you might know.”
For more information on the ride, call Stumpf at 717-468-6197 or search for “Annual Frosty Balls & Frozen Susies Poker Run To Benefit Veterans” on Facebook.

facing families. “We are here by God’s design in this moment,” he said. “We pray that You would fill all families with a hunger to live Your will … to understand our responsibilities before You. May we seek to live out Your kingdom way in

Kevin Eshleman, lead pastor of Ephrata Community Church, spoke about Jesus’ prayer in John 17. “Jesus prays for Himself and the purposes of God, then for the disciples and then for us all those who would be His followers,” Eshleman said. Eshleman focused on unity among the churches in Lancaster County. “I want to pray with thanksgiving because God has been doing a work among us, bringing (area) congregations of different expressions (of faith) together under the banner of the Lord Jesus Christ,” he said. Every year, after festivities wind down on Christmas Day, many people experience a feeling of melancholy. Once all the wrapping paper has been ripped off the presents, it’s not uncommon for revelers to catch the post-Christmas blues as they begin to think of the bleak winter months that must be endured before the next holiday. But most people don’t know that this is a uniquely modern problem some centuries ago, Christmas Day marked the beginning of the fun. The traditional English Christmas was known as Yuletide, a custom involving 12 days of partying that kicked off on Dec. 25 every year. Christmas Day itself was primarily for religious

waltzes and other dances from the era. Harpsichordists Margaret Marsch and Faith Martin and violinist Mercy Martin will provide live music during each tour. Guests may visit the mansion’s study to hear a recorded monologue of Hand played by an actor. In the recording, Hand reflects on Christmas Day in 1776, when he crossed the Delaware River beside George Washington to turn the tide of the Revolutionary War. Two decades later, Hand ponders the luxuries that were made attainable by the sacrifices of others. The Yuletide Tours are historically informed by Historic Rock Ford’s curator, Sarah Alberico, who has researched old newspapers and archives to learn what was customary in the 18th century. “The Yuletide Tours are an opportunity take a little breath after the frantic holiday,” said Sam Slaymaker, Historic Rock Ford’s director. “Enjoy the sights and sounds of a time that was more reflective and more about being with friends and family.” To purchase tickets for the Yuletide Tours, visit https://rockford.yapsody. com.
