A Thrill Of Hope Church Plans Service For Those Experiencing Loss
ruce Tully, pastor of Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, and Ron Gardiner, music director at the church, have been considering the hurts of a “weary world” for a while. “We talked about this five years ago,” recalled Gardiner. “But it evolved when I found this piece of music.” The anthem Gardiner shared with Tully was called “When Memory Fades,” and the piece became the impetus for “A Thrill of Hope,” a program of seasonal songs and God’s Word to comfort those affected by loss, to be held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19. Tully noted that all are welcome to the service, but that the mix of music by composer Joel Raney with Scripture readings and a message of hope and encouragement is especially designed for

When Linda DaSilva walked into the Quilt Shop at Miller’s, 2811 Lincoln Highway East, Ronks, in January, she began a conversation with retail manager Annette Nauman. “I said it was a fun place,” recalled DaSilva. Nauman responded by asking DaSilva if she would like to work in the shop. Two days later, DaSilva was back to fill out an application, and she began working in the shop in March. See Quilt Shop pg 2
an ornament honoring a loved one on a live tree, which will later be planted on the church grounds. “We have taken what was basically a Christmas cantata with four themes of Advent - love, joy, hope, and peace - and broken it into segments,” explained Tully. The addition of the tagline “A Weary World Rejoices” enhances the meaning of the presentation in a world two years into the effects of a pandemic. Gardiner noted that Raney’s works are familiar to the congregation since the composer visited the church a few years ago. “We got to know him, and we do a lot of his music,” said Gardiner. “He has done some interesting things musically that give (his compositions) a whole fresh approach.” Light refreshments will be served following the service. In the case of inclement weather, readers are asked to visit www.salemhellers.com.

tree? Probably not, but is it wise to bring a pet into the home during the holidays only to fully grasp the reality of pet ownership when life returns to normal in January? Alexis Vollmer, an animal care technician, with the Humane League of Lancaster County, said that the last couple of years the organization has been lucky following Christmas. “We had quite a few less returns compared to how many were adopted out,” noted Vollmer, who credits the matchmaking skills of league members and staff with that low number. DaSilva sees the shop experience as being about more than selling quilts. “It’s the story of the quilts. It’s the community of people who make the quilts,” explained DaSilva, who noted that customers often tell staff about the quilts in their families. The sense of community caused DaSilva, Nauman, and fellow employee Barbara Whitney to consider what they could do to give back to others in the area. “We knew we had these wonderful quilting groups locally that do so much charity work,” said DaSilva. “We thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be interesting to
feature their things (in the shop) so customers could learn about what (the groups) do?’” Next, DaSilva contacted Fran Stefany, a member of the Highland Quilters group associated with Highland Presbyterian Church in Manheim Township. DaSilva and Stefany had known each other about a decade, having worked together at Franklin & Marshall College, and this was not the first time the pair had used quilting to help charities. “(In 2011), I was making trips (to Heritage Academy in Ghana) and raising money for supplies

(for the school there),” said DaSilva, who would bring back fabric from Ghana that Highland Quilters would turn into quilts and sell at Highland’s mission fair. The money they raised provided scholarships and supplies to Heritage. The Highland Quilters agreed to be the first group to be spotlighted in the shop. Nauman selected a spot where she said customers tend to look right after coming in the door. “We did a quilt for the (American) Cancer Society and raised $17,000 (previously),” explained Nauman. “This is the wall we used for that.” During the month of October, Highland’s quilts were displayed in the shop, with 100% of the sales being returned to the quilters. The group waited until the Extraordinary Give in November and then pooled that money with other funds to support both local and international missions, choosing to spread out more than $4,000 to several organizations, including HOPE International and CASA. During November and December, the Red Rose Quilters Guild of Lancaster are in the spotlight at the shop. The guild works to promote quilting through education, and guild members give lectures and oversee workshops. Currently, meetings are virtual, but the studio, which provides unstructured quilting time for members, is held in person the fourth Tuesday of each month at Hosanna! A Fellowship of Christians in Lititz. More information about the group may be found at http://bit.ly/rrqg-lanc. Nauman said the shop plans to continue the program, with the next group to be spotlighted in March. back on behavior we’re seeing and whether or not we think they will do OK with each other,” she stated, adding that the child’s energy level will be considered. She noted that younger animals are often better with children. When a new animal comes home, it should be given its own space to decompress and dogs should be taken out often. “They need to get adjusted,” she said, adding that cats especially can be overwhelmed easily. Lastly, Vollmer commented on the element of surprise in getting a new animal. “Sometimes people aren’t expecting a commitment for a present,” she said. “We tell people to make the surprise coming to the shelter to pick out the animal. It’s still a great experience, but it circumvents some potential issues.” More information about the Humane League may be found at https://humanepa.org/ partners/humane-league-of -lancaster-county or by searching for “the Humane League of Lancaster County” on Facebook.

out,” she stated. “We have gotten a lot of animals (back) because people didn’t have the time anymore.” Several factors are involved in helping to select an animal that fits with the family’s dynamic. “We work with the information we get on the applications and what we know about the animal,” said Vollmer of the matchmaking process. She noted that when there are already pets in the home, it is important to introduce them slowly and have plans in place in case they do not warm up to each other right away. In the case of a dog, a family may bring the pet to meet the potential adoptee. She noted that a kitten may be a better choice than an adult cat if the home already has a dog in it. Whether small children live in the home or visit often is also a determining factor. Vollmer noted that the league recommends bringing children or grandchildren to meet the dog or cat at the shelter. “We want to see how they are here and give adopters feed-

Vollmer pointed out that there are two important commitments that potential adopters should examine when considering a new pet. “I would say people who are prepared for the time and financial commitments (are more successful pet owners),” said Vollmer. She noted that while animals are spayed, neutered, and microchipped by the league, there will still be expenses related to yearly examinations and vaccinations, and she added that older pets may need special food, medicine, and joint supplements. Time commitments may vary with the animal, but Vollmer warns that this time of year may give a false sense of reality. “Around the holidays, people are off and have free time, but once they go back to work (they will have less free time),” she noted, adding that it is essential to consider the demands of a new puppy or kitten. “Consistency (in a schedule) helps keep the animals from getting stressed

baskets in Lancaster. LEADS selected the 165year-old Old Main as this year’s honored landmark. Dedicated in 1856, Old Main embodies the classic details associated with Gothic Revival architecture, including extreme verticality, lancet windows and louvers, battlements, and finials. It was designed by the Baltimore firm Dixon, Balbirnie & Dixon and built by Lancaster contractor Haden Patrick Smith at a cost of $25,136 starting in 1854. The 3D ornaments are ren-
ditions of structures that have played a meaningful role in Lancaster’s historic and cultural life, crafted of solid brass plated in 24-karat gold. For the first time, the ornament is offered in full color. It can be used as a tree or window decoration or displayed in the gold foil box it comes in along with a card telling its history. Since 2012, LEADS has invested more than $75,000 to improve the city’s holiday decorations. Proceeds from the sale of the ornaments go toward paying for that
investment. Ornaments can be purchased at several Lancaster locations, including BUiLDiNG CHARACTER, 342 N. Queen St., rear warehouses; Festoon at the Firehouse, 202 N. Duke St.; the Turkey Lady at Central Market; and the city Visitors Center on Penn Square. They can also be ordered by calling BUiLDiNG CHARACTER at 717-394-7201. There is an additional charge for shipping. For more information about LEADS, visit www. lancasterleads.org.

AmeriCorps VISTA Grant Received The City of Lancaster received a three-year grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) to establish an AmeriCorps VISTA program. This nearly $400,000 grant will help the City of Lancaster focus on creating equity and capacity in the areas of economic opportunity, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, and racial equity and opportunity. This year’s emphasis will be on advancing racial equity and opportunity in city communities. The first cohort of 10 team members and one leader will serve full time for one year, helping to build capacity within the City of Lancaster government and community organizations in Lancaster city. Each team member will contribute to the goals of the project by performing activi-
ties such as providing outreach about city programs, increasing language access, expanding recruitment efforts and the intern program, and creating more avenues for residents to take part in community activities, decision-making, and planning. AmeriCorps members receive living and housing stipends during their term of service, as well as technology and transportation support and opportunities for professional development. At the end of their term, AmeriCorps members are eligible for education awards toward college or trade school. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled. More information, including position descriptions, can be found at www.cityoflancaster pa.com/vista.

During her address, Deanna said therapeutic riding at GMTRC has improved Zoey’s core strength, balance, and use of her hands. Zoey has created close bonds with her horse, Little Lacey; her instructors; and the volunteers at the barn. Deanna is a physical therapist and learned about GMTRC and its services through her coworkers at the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. Schreiber is responsible for connecting many of its clients to additional resources for continued development. Since joining the Schreiber team five years ago, Deanna has been able to recommend wraparound services, like GMTRC, to her clients. Schreiber provides outpatient and in-home pediatric therapy for people from birth to age 21, serving more than 4,000 children a year. Therapy services include occupational, physical, speech-language therapy, and behavioral health services. Zoey has benefited from Schreiber’s resources as well. She attended Schreiber’s S.T.A.R.S. preschool and Circle of Friends Academy.
Schreiber also offers recreation programs, summer camps, and specialized classes for parents. GMTRC and the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development are available to help new families in need and share resources for other organizations. The United Way of Lancaster County also provides information for people in need, which is available by visiting www.uwlanc.org or Zoey riding Little Lacey surrounded calling 211. by volunteers

With DigiBlocks, learners build the concepts behind place value by using specially designed boxes to assemble boxes into blocks of 10. The Transition Center, established in 2020, will build its capacity to provide students specific independent living skills with the installation of a washer and dryer in the PAES Lab. The lab, which already houses a full set of kitchen appliances, enables students to practice and master a more complete range of skill sets that are currently only taught through virtual means, such as videos and presentations.

Blue Ridge Communications closed its 12th year of partnership with Keystone Military Families (KMF) Stockings For Soldiers, in which the company raised more than $28,000 in monetary donations. These funds are slated to defray the costs of purchasing, shipping and distributing gift-filled stockings to soldiers serving in the United States military around the world. According to Cindy Mellinger, Central Pennsylvania coordinator for KMF Stockings for Soldiers and marketing/community relations coordinator for Blue Ridge, Blue Ridge collected 8,000 pounds of stocking stuffer donations, including food, hygiene and other requested items, and received more than 32,000 personalized messages to include in the
boxes, including close to 12,000 crocheted and knitted prayer squares and more than 16,000 cards. The company collected more than 4,000 colored stockings, including handsewn stockings, and more than 3,500 handmade ornaments. To assist in reaching KMF’s goal of 10,000 stockings, Blue Ridge asked the community to make monetary donations through a secure website using PayPal or a debit or credit card. Also supporting the effort was Reinholds VFW Post 6759, which has been an avid supporter of KMF Stockings for Soldiers. The post has partnered with Blue Ridge since 2012. Completing its 10th year of support through various fundraisers, Reinholds VFW raised more than $11,000 to offset the cost of shipping the

Each student worked in class to create a background mural for their figure and then worked with their parents to create a costume for their character to wear in the wax museum.
