“We are nothing without volunteers,” pointed out Jonathan Barrett, director of Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS),

who is the only full-time employee of the ministry that aids Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) residents in need in a variety of ways.

Barrett credits the core of up to 40 volunteers, along with six part-time staff members, with keeping the

ministry running smoothly. CVCCS provides a food pantry for CVSD residents, a county-wide clothing bank, financial counseling services, and an after-school mentorship program.

According to Barrett, just a few hours a month of volunteer help on weekdays can make a significant difference. “If we have someone serving once a month for a couple hours on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday morning or afternoon, that’s perfect,” said Barrett, who added that many current volunteers are stay-at-home moms, retired individuals, or high school and college students who are age 18 years and up. Among the many tasks for which volunteers are a good fit are shopping with food and clothing bank clients, performing clerical duties, completing off-site pickups and deliveries, sorting and shelving food items, sorting and

hanging clothing donations, and serving as mentors in the Rooted afterschool program.

“We are always in need of volunteers,” said Barrett, who noted that an additional 20 volunteers would be ideal and that helpers are especially needed on Thursdays. Referring to the environment at CVCCS as a “family-friendly atmosphere,” Barrett called the opportunity a chance to change the world in CVSD, adding, “We appreciate volunteers very much.”

CVCCS, located at 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, is a nonprofit social service organization founded in 2010 by the Conestoga Valley Ministerium. Readers who are interested in volunteering may call 717-208-3711. For more information about the organization and its programs, visit https://cvccs.org.

With Jan. 1, 2023, falling on a Sunday, New Year’s Day will see many members and friends of Zion Lutheran Church in Leola attending the 10 a.m. service that day. However, several attendees will not be leaving church at the conclusion of the service. Rather, they will stay to help facilitate the church’s traditional New Year’s meal.

The New Year’s Day pork and sauerkraut dinner at Zion Lutheran, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, will be held as a takeout-only event at the church beginning at noon. Those wishing to purchase the

nominally priced meals are encouraged to arrive early. “We sold out quickly on (Jan. 1, 2022),” said organizer Patty Williams, who said meals were gone in about 90 minutes.

The meal was not held in 2021 due to COVID-19 concerns. In 2022, a drive-through system was utilized. For the 2023 event, those wishing to purchase dinners are requested to come inside the church to the vestibule to pay by cash, check, or credit card. After paying, individuals will receive a ticket indicating the number of meals purchased to redeem at hot food and cold food stations before exiting the venue. Each meal will contain pork, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, a roll and butter, and a whoopie pie.

Funds raised by the sales of the dinners help to support various ministries of the church, including Homes of Hope, the monthly community meals held at the church, the Water Slide Day held in the summer, and an Easter outreach.

Updates pertaining to inclement weather on the day of the New Year’s meal may be found at www.zionleola.org or by searching for Facebook for “Zion Lutheran Church Leola, Lancaster County, PA.”

Miller Music Festival Set

Congregation Shaarai Shomayim will host vocalist and songwriter Hadar Orshalimy during its Miller Music Festival on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary at Congregation Shaarai Shomayim’s Temple, 75 E. James St., Lancaster. Hadar will also participate in Shabbat services on Friday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m., also in the sanctuary.

Hadar Orshalimy is an acclaimed Israeli vocalist, songwriter, and cantorial soloist based in New York City. She released her debut jazz album “It Never Was You - Jazz by Jewish Songwriters” in 2019 to highlight the contribution of Jews to American music. Her follow-up jazz album, titled “Witchcraft - The

Jewish Women of the Great American Songbook,” is set for release in March and honors the woman songwriters of the great American songbook.

In 1991, Rosanne and David Selfon endowed the annual Miller Music Festival in memory of her parents, Madaline and Lester Miller. To perpetuate their love of music, the annual festival features nationally recognized Jewish musicians in concert. Each year, the weekend opens with a special Shabbat service on Friday night and culminates with a Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon performance.

For more information, contact John Perry at 717-397-5575.

Akron To Host Shoe In

The community is invited to the Akron Shoe In, which will take place on Saturday, Dec. 31. The event is intended to maintain the old-fashioned, family-friendly flavor of the past. It will begin inside Oasis Church, located on the corner of Route 272 and Main Street, where parents and children can enjoy hot chocolate, games, and crafts from 7 to 9 p.m.

Starting at 9 p.m., free activities are planned for families at Akron’s Broad Street Park. Harold Stauffer and his sons will bring a tractor and hay wagon, and they will run a course for hayrides until midnight. A candy cannon is planned so children, assigned by age groups, can scramble for candy. Children will also receive neon bracelets and noise makers for ringing in the new year. A cornhole game will be available, and a firetruck from the Akron Fire Department will be on-site for firemen to oversee a bonfire.

Thanks to sponsors Weiser’s Market, Ephrata National Bank, Blue Ride Communications, and Good’s Disposal, everyone will be able to enjoy free hot dogs and hot chocolate. Ryan Myers will serve as DJ, and Joe Dunn will be the master of ceremonies.

At one time, 80% of Akron’s population worked in the shoe factories that were in business from 1901 to 1984; in keeping with this history, the main event of the Shoe In will be the lowering of a lighted six-foot purple and gold Converse sneaker. Volunteers will hand-crank it down until midnight. Mayor John McBeth will preside.

sierraclub.org/home/polar-bear-5k -run-hike-or-walk-your-dog, email sierraclubevent@gmail.com, or “Like” the club’s Facebook page.

The Polar Bear 5K is the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group’s major fundraiser. All money raised by this event supports local efforts to ease climate change. Funds raised through the 2023 race will help finance the group’s “green project” grant program, which has awarded grants of up to $500 to 71 Lancaster County organizations over the past seven years. The money also will help support the group’s free-tothe-public outdoor activities and educational programs.

Residents are requested to donate any new or slightly used shoes. Donations can be brought to the event, or they can be dropped off at Weiser’s Market, the Akron Borough Office, or the Ephrata National Bank. Afterward, the shoes will be given to Peter’s Porch.

Darryl Witmer is the chair of the Akron Shoe In committee.
