A Stage Full Of Talent BY CATHY MOLITORIS

A variety of talent was on display when Eastern York School District held its annual talent show. The event took place in the performing arts center of Eastern York High School on Jan. 21. “ We had about 20 acts,” said Lindsey Pangburn, who was the master of ceremonies for the evening. “It was open to students, parents and staff in the district,

from elementary school through high school.” Although no adults participated this year, they did at the first talent show, held in 2019. “Everyone is welcome to participate, and there is a spot for everyone,” Pangburn said. Auditions were held, but they were just an opportunity to work out the logistics of the event, including order of performances and special requests such as microphones needed by an act. An Eye For Details BY CATHY MOLITORIS

f you’ve ever admired a Lancaster County landmark, chances are, Tom Hermansader has painted it. For more than 40 years, Hermansader has been making his mark on the art world, creating paintings of churches, houses, bridges, schools and more. Now 71, he’s selling his originals and hoping to find buyers in the area so the works can remain close to home. “I’d like my paintings to go to the places they feature,” he stated. “It’s a recorded piece of history.” Hermansader started dabbling in art as a child. “My dad was a painter, and ever since I was about 5 years old, I’ve been drawn to it,” he recalled. “It was almost like watching a magic show. He’d start with white paper, put a few strokes down and the next thing you know, it’s the beginning of a painting.” He first pursued art school, attending the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, but soon realized it would not be easy to make a living as an artist. He transferred to Kutztown University and earned a degree in art

and his focus on local landmarks has earned Hermansader an award from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County. Subjects of Hermansader’s work include Donegal Presbyterian Church, Wheatland, the Fulton Theatre, the Hans Herr House and Linden Hall. He recently sold an original of the Conestoga House to its new owner and is in the process of selling a painting of Lititz Moravian Church to a Lititz resident. Although he admits he has slowed down a bit with his painting, he is still finding local inspiration. He’s currently working on a painting of Steinman Park in downtown Lancaster. And he can’t imagine giving up what he loves anytime soon. “I must have something with my brain and my eye, because when I see certain colors or patterns, I’m happy,” he said. “I’ve been blessed in my life. Anything I liked, I’ve painted, and I’ve been able to do what I wanted to do.” For more information on Hermansader’s work, visit www.herman sadersartgallery.com, email him at tfhermansader@comcast.net or call him at 717-684-7899.

education before moving to Columbia and teaching art at Columbia High School from 1973 to 1989. Although he enjoyed teaching, he still had a passion to paint, and he created his first painting of a local site - Wright’s Ferry Mansion in Columbia - in 1981. “I put the print on display at the market house in Columbia to see if I could sell it, but I wasn’t sure how it would be received,” he said. “I ended up taking orders for 54 prints in the first two days.” Encouraged that perhaps he could eventually make a living as an artist, Hermansader kept painting, finding inspiration all over the county and beyond. He spends about 300 hours working on each painting, paying painstaking attention to detail from multiple photos he takes at the site. “Every brick, every stone in each building is exact,” he stated. “Nothing is estimated. I may be off by one, but I kind of doubt it.” In his painting of the Strasburg Rail Road, for example, he remembers counting 169 fence posts. His painting of the Veterans Memorial Bridge is exact down to the bridge’s bolts. His attention to detail

“We had a lot of really great talent this year,” Pangburn noted. “We had a couple of students play piano … including a third-grader who wrote his own piano song. We had a lot of dancers, baton twirling. Part of our senior high’s drum line performed, and that was really great.” One of the most creative acts was a high school student who displayed a unique talent, she said. “He solves Rubik’s Cubes, and he solved a regular one in under 30 sec-

“Columbia’s Storied Places” Lecture Series Set Susquehanna National Heritage Area has unveiled a new exhibit, “Columbia’s Storied Places,” at Columbia Crossing, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Created with the support of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society and LancasterHistory, the exhibit examines the ways Columbia residents have transformed their town. A lecture series will be presented in connection with the exhibit. The series will explore how the borough’s iconic locations, from the industrial riverfront to the ornate but ill-fated opera house, evolved

and changed over the town’s existence. Each lecture will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Afterward, attendees may share their stories on the “Storied Places” map. “Columbia’s Opera House” will be presented by Chris Vera of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society on Wednesday, Feb. 23. In 1872, Columbia showed off its wealth with a new town hall, which included a 1,000-seat opera house and was the biggest public building in Lancaster County at the time. “Tell Your Story: An Oral

History Workshop” will be delivered by Monica Spiese, historian at Millersville University, on Wednesday, March 23. Participants will learn about the importance of oral history and participate in a workshop where they will learn how to gather and share personal stories and oral histories. “Riverfront Stories” with Lynn Smoker will take place on Wednesday, April 27. Smoker will share stories of Columbia’s riverfront. These lectures are available virtually or in-person. To attend in-person, guests must

Residential, commercial, trouble shooting, light/fan install, rewire, and panel upgrades

provide proof of vaccination and must wear a mask indoors. Everyone who purchases a ticket will receive a link to watch the presentation from home. At any time, ticket holders can decide to attend virtually without notifying Columbia Crossing. For more information, contact 717-449-5607, ext. 2.

South Central PaARTners at Millersville University (SCPAMU), the regional arts in education partner for the PA Council on the Arts, received a $16,000 grant from PA Humanities as part of its $1.4 million recovery and growth program. Called PA SHARP (Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan), the initiative provides flexible funding to strengthen and grow the humanities across the state. SCPAMU trains and recruits teaching artists and places them in short-term residencies in schools and community settings throughout Berks, Lancaster, and Schuylkill counties. Artists are paid a living wage to allow them to work and thrive in the region. SCPAMU will use PA SHARP funding to extend its existing work in critical literacy, developing a new curriculum centered on hip-hop, creative writing, dance, and music. As with its existing programming, this program will be

tied to core standards to infuse classroom learning with new and dynamic ways for all students to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. Funds from PA SHARP aim to help address the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on the cultural sector by supporting creative programming, capacity building, and general operations. In addition to funding, the PA SHARP Learning Network will build a statewide community of people passionate about creating inclusive, engaged communities that are ready to lead the statewide recovery alongside PA Humanities. Funding for PA SHARP comes from PA Humanities’ federal partner, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. This legislation allocated to the NEH funds to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from the pandemic. The full list of PA SHARP grantees is available at www .pahumanities.org/pasharp.
