Forming A Creative Collaboration BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Mychal LaVia believes in the power of collaboration. The cofounder of Columbia Creative Factory was looking for a new location for his organization when he walked into Kindred Collections at 452 Locust St., Columbia. The business, owned by Dena Krebs and Julie Hess, opened its 10,000square-foot location in early 2020. “He came in and said he was looking for a space and I said, ‘Well, we
definitely have space,’” Krebs recalled. “It sort of felt like it was meant to be.” LaVia plans to hold classes and workshops on-site but will continue Columbia Creative Factory’s mission of serving the wider community as well. LaVia co-founded the Columbia Creative Factory with Kevin Leaman in 2016 after successfully volunteering and holding workshops with the Lancaster Creative Factory, which was created by Lehman. a birthday party, and he has invited his closest friends and family … and one of them gets murdered.” Rivertown Theatre Productions was created by Wright and Mimnall. The lifelong friends have been involved in local theater since high school and run the Columbia Haunted Lantern Tour.
As successful local businesswomen, Megan Kalbach and Jacque Hess felt a pull to help others. The friends decided to use their experience and connections to create the Mountville Community Event. To be held Saturday, March 13, from noon to 6 p.m., the event will feature live music, food trucks, small businesses, crafters and more in Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville.

For 35 years, Align Life Ministries has been holding an annual Walk Run for Life fundraiser. This year, the organization formerly known as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services will hold an expanded event called Move for Life: Walk Run Plus. An in-person event will be held on Saturday, May 8, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The fundraiser also features a virtual option for participation. “The in-person event will

offer a 5K run and 1-mile walk simultaneously, starting at 9 a.m.,” said Heather Muncy, events director for Align Life Ministries. “If an individual or team prefers to participate virtually, they can choose their own safe, healthy, fun activity anytime between now and May 8.” For example, participants may choose to walk, run or even jump rope. The virtual component began last year, Muncy said, when the organization had to shift away from an in-person fundraiser due to the pandemic. “Participants decided to jump rope, dunk basketballs, take family hikes, bicycle rides, Frisbee, golf, run, walk … the possibilities were endless,” she recalled. “We then realized the opportunity to expand our event in general to include a virtual - or ‘plus’ option.” Participants can decide the length and time of their activity, she explained, and then submit a photo or short video to show what they did. They can also plan to attend the in-person event. “Those who are participating virtually can join us on May 8 for a grand celebration and pick up their prizes at the same time,” Muncy stated. The in-person event will feature a family-friendly walk and chip-timed 5K run as well as free Kids’ Zones with live entertainment, interactive inflatables, face painting, snow cones and more. Move for Life is an important event for the organization, Muncy noted, adding that it not only helps further the mission of promoting the sacredness of life, but it also helps raise funds to serve more people in need. “It is our biggest fundraising event, providing 15% of our annual budgeted income,” she stated. The York County commissioners recently announced the state’s COVID-19 Hospitality Industry Recovery Program (CHIRP), which will allocate $145 million in funding assistance to hospitality industry businesses throughout Pennsylvania that were adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program requires the county to establish a grant application for eligible businesses, which include the accommodations sector as well as the food and beverage sector of the tourism industry. York County Economic Alliance (YCEA), a certified economic development organization, will facilitate this grant money. York County is anticipated to receive a little more than $5 million, an amount based on population proportion. Businesses seeking these
grants can receive between $5,000 and $50,000. Applicants must have opened by February 2020 and demonstrate adverse economic impact from COVID-19 and/or the business restrictions resulting from the pandemic. YCEA estimates that roughly 1,000 businesses in York County could be eligible for this relief program. The application process will
open on Monday, March 15. To be added to an email list for updates, readers may contact kmahoney@yceapa.org. Although York County and YCEA are still working through some of the grant program’s guidelines, Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development has posted the basic framework of the program at https://dced.pa.gov/.

Community Event from pg 1 “ We both have had very successful careers in sales and marketing before the pandemic,” Kalbach said. “We felt a calling after helping with the Mountville Carnival’s food truck event last year. We felt God was calling us to help support local businesses. We saw small businesses struggling to get set up online this past year, struggling with figuring out how to do curbside pickup or to-go options. We had the knowledge, and so we just sat down and created MJ
Small Business Squad.” This is the first event MJ Small Business Squad is hosting, and Kalbach said attendees can expect a fun afternoon. “We’ll have more than 40 vendors and small businesses and lots of local churches with kids’ activities,” she stated. “Miss Agriculture USA will be there with kids’ games and Cosplayers Care will be doing photos with superheroes and princesses.” The Easter Bunny will be there, along with Mountville
Fire Company, which will assist with parking by donation and hold a giveaway drawing. Sow and Sew mobile boutique will be on site, as will BTS Property Services, which will be bringing equipment for kids to explore. Additional participants include the Girl Scouts, Mountville Lions Club, Mountville Swim Team, Hempfield Education Association and Reality Church. “We’re doing this to support small businesses and give them the opportunity they need to get out there and work,” Kalbach explained. “We’re also inviting any nonprofits to come and provide a kids’ activity.” Kalbach and Hess will be making a donation to the
Mountville Fire Company for its assistance and to the park as a thank you for hosting the event. “We just wanted to offer a chance for families to come out and have fun while supporting businesses in their community,” Kalbach noted, adding that she and Hess hope to do more events like this one. “We’re doing this because we have a heart for small businesses. … We know this year has been hard for everyone, and we just want to help make it a little better.” For more information on the Mountville Community Event or to sign up as a vendor, readers may visit https://mjsquad.com and select “Community Event.”

There’s a great energy in Columbia, and you can feel it.” When the building that housed Columbia Creative Factory went up for sale, LaVia began looking for

“I would encourage people to come out and see the show and let them know that the historical building the play is being featured in will be undergoing restoration, so most of the profits will be going toward that,” Wright explained. Wright and Mimnall have big plans for Rivertown Theatre Productions, including expanding their reach beyond Columbia. “Our main goal is to give back to the community through theater, as well as bring the community into our theater,” Wright stated. “Our tagline is, ‘The world is our stage, and the community our ensemble.’ We want to work with the community as much as possible.” Mimnall wrote “Murder at the Miller Mansion,”

“In 2019, we decided we wanted to go bigger and expand on what we were doing with the lantern tour,” Mimnall said. “ We decided to make Rivertown Theatre Productions the umbrella company.” They have a second murder mystery planned for July. Rivertown Theatre Productions is a nonprofit, and proceeds are used to either fund the next production or give back to the community. The organization’s home base is Art Printing Company, located in the Miller mansion, where the play will be held. The setting is perfect, Wright noted, because it not only serves as an eerie backdrop to a murder mystery, but it also shows audiences how their ticket purchase will make a difference.
options that would allow him to stay in the local community. The location at Kindred Collections is the perfect solution, he said. “Our mission is to connect with the community and strengthen our ties with the community,” he noted. “They support that mission here at Kindred, and they have that same good energy.” Columbia Creative Factory offers free classes at the Columbia Senior Center as well as the Boys and Girls Club of Columbia. “Eighty percent of what we do is off-site, and we want to still do things out in the community,” LaVia said, adding that he plans to offer some on-site classes in mosaics and pottery. “It’s important for us to reach as many people as possible.” Krebs said Columbia Creative Factory has been a welcome addition to her business, which features more than 80 artists offering handmade, upcycled and vintage items. “We didn’t know each other before Mychal walked in, but it’s been going very well,” she stated, noting that LaVia will be creating an in-house mural to commemorate Kindred Collections’ one-year anniversary. “We both believe in the community spirit in Columbia.
