Columbia High School To Present “Disney’s Aladdin JR.” e’s a poor boy from the streets. She’s the daughter of a sultan. Can their love defy the odds? Find out when Columbia High School performs “Disney’s Aladdin JR.” The school will present the show on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 25, 26 and 27. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Seating is limited to 120 people at each performance, and mask wearing and social distancing will be required. “Disney’s Aladdin JR.” is an adaptation of the Disney movie “Aladdin.” “It’s about a boy who meets the love of his life, but he needs a genie to help him achieve his dreams,” said Isaiah Spencer, a sophomore who portrays Aladdin in the show. “Audiences can expect fun, excitement and some surprises.” Alexis Phillips, a sophomore who plays Aladdin’s love interest, Princess Jasmine, emphasized that the show will be a familyfriendly night of entertainment. “It’s a really funny show, full of

spirit and energy,” she stated. The Columbia production features a cast of 14 along with several “performing crew members,” said director Janet Wood. “I call them ‘performing crew members’ because they do more than just move something on stage,” she explained. “They perform in some of the musical numbers.” The cast and crew also features Madison Quarry, Isaiah Manfred, Alayna Morales, Alaina Riedel, Megan VanBuren, Alissa Phillips, Samia Anderson, Raiden Ferrer, Carly VanBuren, Amina Williams, Ciara Ramos, Levi Spencer, Jalaysha Gonzales, AJ Morales and Alex Phillips. Wood said choosing to do a “junior” version of a Disney show gave her the needed flexibility for a particularly uncertain year. “It’s a one-act musical,” she noted. “The music is very challenging, and the production elements are challenging, but it’s a shorter show, which means it requires less time for everyone to be together on stage or in the audience.” The show also uses a prerecorded soundtrack,

noted. “Our parishes struggle as costs increase for instructional materials, new technology and maintenance on aging buildings,” she remarked. “This year it is even more challenging than ever. The difference between what a family is able to pay and the actual cost of education is subsidized in part by generous grants, private contributions and fundraising activities such as (this gala).” Although this year’s gala will look a little different, its focus will be the same as previous years, Sahd-Havrilla said. “We will have an online auction that will open at midnight on April 16 and will close at midnight on the 18th,” she stated. “We’ll have lots of items up for bid - gift cards that range from golf to tours of local attractions. We have an autographed Steelers football. We have a lot of kids’ baskets. There’s something for everyone.” Gala participants may bid on the item or may choose to “buy it now,” she said. Last year’s event raised

more than $25,000 for the school, which serves 153 students in preschool through eighth grade, and SahdHavrilla hopes to meet that goal again this year. Funds from last year’s event helped provide tuition assistance to 42 students. Along with raising funds, the gala will recognize two people who have worked to make a difference at the school by inducting them into the Our Lady of the Angels Hall of Fame. “ We are a consolidated school from members of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and
Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and we pick one person from each who is invested in our school,” Sahd-Havrilla noted. This year’s honorees are Polly Davis and Kathleen Lutz. “We are recognizing both of them this year, but we hope to return to an in-person gala next year, and we will also honor them in person at that point,” Sahd-Havrilla said. A link to the Angels Among Us Gala auction will be posted on the school’s Facebook page as well as on the school’s website, www.ourladyofthe angels.org. The link will go live on April 16.
Shoes from pg 1 The shoes are then collected by Funds2Orgs, which distributes them throughout its network of microenterprise partners. Funds2Orgs works with microentrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited, explained Chasity Cichocki, president of the Eastern York Band Boosters. “We are excited about our
shoe drive,” Cichocki said. “We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets they would like to donate to us. By doing so, we raise money for the Eastern York band, and we have the chance to help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities. It’s a win-win for everyone.” The band is in need of funds, particularly after a year that made in-person fundraising difficult, Gromis noted. “The

During the pandemic and the subsequent changes to shopping, dining, and business practices, websites have been indispensable. “More and more during COVID, (the internet) becomes the place where transactions happen. (People are) placing orders and buying products (online),” explained marketing expert Adam Grim. “Websites are the first impression for the business. In most cases these days, people are looking at your website before they’re willing to have a call with you or stop by your location.” Grim has worked in digital marketing in Lancaster County for nearly a decade. With a business partner, he built Sparrow Websites before recently shifting his focus from doing the design work to helping business owners develop content and opening Bootstrap Local. “I have a passion for those businesses who have a great idea, a lot of grit and determination, but don’t have a huge budget for marketing,” Grim said. Grim is a member of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and has been a guest speaker on
the subject of effectively using the web to market small businesses. Additionally, he offers marketing advice with Lancaster SCORE, which provides free mentoring and education for business owners and entrepreneurs. “I’m on my second business, but I got a SCORE mentor. She’s been fantastic,” Grim commented. “Every business should have a SCORE mentor.” With how important websites are, Grim advocated spending time, if not money, to develop one. Domain names can be purchased relatively inexpensively from Google, and free or low-cost site builders like Wix, Weebly, and Webs are available. Grim recommends using SquareSpace, which has a strong search engine optimization (SEO) framework that helps websites become visible in searches. Before starting, however, business owners should plan a good messaging strategy by identifying their target audience and how the business’ service or product can solve customers’ problems, and they should create a mood board, which will lead to the creation of a style guide. Grim recommended visiting www.mystorybrand.com to help with that process.
Once the site is live on the web, the next thing is to update it on a regular basis through blog posts, video content, and voice recordings. These can be uncomfortable at first, Grim noted. “For most businesses, in order to grow, (owners) need to step out a bit,” Grim shared. “For a while, I didn’t like being on camera, so I didn’t do anything, but then I discovered podcasts. I got comfortable with them, and now I do videos.” Podcasts are a significant missed marketing opportunity, Grim said, as there are large databases of podcasts looking for guests. Even if a podcast is not local, the link will point back to the business page, which will improve rankings in search results. Other resources for business owners include www.canva.com for creating attractive visuals and www.answerthepublic.com for discovering what questions potential customers are asking. “(Go here) if you want to create helpful (website) content but don’t know where to start,” Grim advised. Readers may also visit https://lancaster.score.org and www.bootstraplocal.com for free resources. Those with questions may email Grim at adam@bootstraplocal.com.

In 2020, when most sports events were canceled or modified due to the state COVID mandates, other outdoor events filled in the schedule at Glatfelter Memorial Field. Organizations were not able to hold indoor gatherings, so they held bingo fundraisers, memorial services, birthday parties, food distributions, and more at the field. With sports returning to the fields and some mandates still in place, Glatfelter Memorial Field may be busier than ever. Individuals and organizations interested in
using the field are encouraged to make reservations early. Fees to use the facility help cover the basic expenses, such as mowing, removal of downed trees, water, electric, and insurance. Due to the age of some of the structures, some major repairs will be needed in the near future. Glatfelter Memorial Field is private property, and no municipal, county, or state funding is received to cover these costs. To make a reservation, contact the Glatfelter Memorial Field Trust board at glatfelter memorialfield@gmail.com.

will be on sale at the park. Attendees will be asked to practice social distancing. Proceeds will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation via the Keith Wagner’s Mother’s Day Convoy account. Keith, Marsha’s father, will lead the annual Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy because he raised the most money for the foundation in 2019. Featured in the convoy will be the Make-A-Wish Angel trailer. The trailer is enclosed, and its sides are covered with stars and the names of MakeA-Wish children who have died. One of the names is Marsha’s daughter, Harley. “My daughter, Harley, was a Make-A-Wish child, but she passed away before she got her wish,” explained Marsha. “The (first) year my dad got first place, he asked to pull the trailer (so that) Harley would be able to be part of the con-
voy (in spirit). Now, every year the first truck has the opportunity to pull that trailer.” The Little Hands Big Plans charity was formed by the Wagner family, which has adopted children with special needs and serious medical conditions. Marsha also lost another adopted daughter, Elaina. “We raise money for kids, and we have big plans,” Marsha said, explaining the name of the charity. “ We didn’t want to call it ‘the Wagners.’ We wanted something more.” For more information about the motorcycle ride and Kids Day, readers may call Marsha at 717-989-3998 or search for “Little Hands Big Plans” on Facebook. Those who would like to reserve an event T-shirt in advance may call or email Marsha at harleykarolynmom@aol.com. Orders are due by Friday, March 26.

This year, as was the case in 2020, the motorcycle ride will not travel to Delaware because of visitation and capacity restrictions at the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. Instead, the ride will be local. “We are doing a local scenic route and coming back to the park, where we will have a Kids Day for children with special needs (and their siblings) to try to make it a similar experience,” said event organizer Marsha Wagner, one of the family members who founded the Little Hands Big Plans charity. “We will have ice cream sundaes and little games for the kids to play, and a DJ will play music.” There will a cost per motorcycle to participate in the local ride. VisionCorps’ Virtual Format Provides Education And Community BY ANN MEAD ASH
When COVID-19 restrictions shut down the state in March of 2020, VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization working to empower the blind and vision impaired, stopped providing services, but not for long. “We shut down services for a couple weeks, but we quickly realized our services were still needed out in the community,” said Chris
Ament, vice president of rehabilitation and education with VisionCorps. To stay within the restrictions, Ament explained that VisionCorps developed a hybrid approach to service delivery. The hybrid programming is part virtual and part in-person. “You can’t safely teach someone how to cross the street over the computer,” noted Ament, who added that the organization was careful to protect all involved. “Our goal is to address safety with employees and the clients we serve,” he said. “For instance, a lot of our intakes are done either over the computer or the phone, but when someone needs direct attention, whether it’s our occupational therapy or mobility program, (it’s completed in person) with safety precautions taken.”
Miranda Golden leads the VisionCorps book club online. Many of the organization’s services are available virtually to clients and others.
Virtual programming in a variety of formats has been utilized by VisionCorps staff as well as associated groups that receive services. “ We have a lot of small groups meeting virtually,” said Ament, referring to the nearly 20 groups that discuss topics from mobility to books to service dogs. “We serve five counties, and each one has a support group and topics to discuss,” shared Ament. VisionCorps covers Lancaster, Chester, York, Adams, and Lebanon counties. VisionCorps vice president and chief development officer Megan Tomsheck said that one woman who receives services shared how the virtual connection has changed her life. “(She) said that the (situation) has improved her life because it is hard for her to get out of her home, but now she can participate virtually,” recalled Tomsheck. Ament noted that, overall, the changes have benefited clients and the organization. “The reality is that our service delivery model will be much stronger because we can do
these things virtually,” he said, adding that virtual connections use time more efficiently. “We have a very creative team, and I think the opportunities are endless,” Ament said. In addition to offering virtual services to clients, Tomsheck said that presentations can be made to outside groups. “Part of our marketing, awareness, and public education is that we do theme presentations to service clubs, churches, or any group that would be interested in learning how we can help them,” said Tomsheck. “We realize a lot of groups are meeting online, so we have made ourselves available to do those presentations for them.” Tomsheck noted that online training is available for educational purposes as well. “Chris’ team can do training for a retirement community that has several residents who are blind, and (the community’s) staff may not have training,” she said. “We can offer that support as well.” To learn more about VisionCorps, readers may visit www.visioncorps.net.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT. You who made me see everything and showed me the way to reach my ideal, You who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You who are in all instances, of my life, with me, I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great material desires may be.
