14th Annual EPC Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan Services BY COURTNEY MENGEL
n 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.”
“There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and
snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.” Caprell said one of the biggest reasons to attend the event is that events such as the EPC Golf Outing are important to the funding of GSS. “This event can help hundreds and hundreds of people and provide them with a safe place to call home,” she emphasized. “Your donation and participation will make a direct impact on the community.” To date, the EPC Golf Outing has raised more than $100,000 for charity. Preregistration is required and can be completed up to 48 hours before the event. For more information about the EPC Golf Outing, to register to play, or to sponsor the event, visit www.epc golfouting.com. Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing.
For 24 hours, it will be easy to make a difference in the York community. Give Local York (GLY), a 24-hour giving spree presented by Giant Food Stores, will run on Friday, May 7, from midnight to 11:59 p.m. For the fourth year in a row, 300 nonprofits whose work benefits York County are participating. In addition to supporting a particular nonprofit, participants will have the option of donating to two COVID-specific funds, said Meagan
Given, executive director of the White Rose Leadership Institute, who oversees the fundraiser. “Our COVID-19 Community Fund is a way for people to really support all of the nonprofits,” Given explained. “Money raised through that fund will be shared evenly by participating nonprofits … Many have been hit really hard this past year.” The other COVID-specific fund option is the York City Independent Restaurant Association. “Everyone is aware that the hospitality industry was hit very hard this past year also,” Given noted. “(The association) is comprised of restaurants located in York city who do events together such as Restaurant Week. This fund is another way to make sure the restaurants we love can stick around.”

and baked goods. DJ Bam Bam will provide music. “Most of our vendors are local,” Rightnour noted. “There’s going to be such a variety of crafters. You’ll see everything from dog treats to home decor and everything in between. And, the show is right along the river, so your view of the Susquehanna is going to be spectacular.” Vendors were charged a fee to rent their space for the event, and the money will benefit both Moose International and the Columbia Moose Lodge. Moose International runs two major programs - Mooseheart, a group home for children through age 18, and Moosehaven, a retirement community. Rightnour said Crafting for a Cause promises to be a fun day full of opportunities to check out unique vendors. “It’s happening the day before Mother’s Day, so there’s no more perfect time to pick up some last-minute gifts,” she remarked. Leading up to the event, updates will be posted on Facebook with spotlights on the participants. “People can search for ‘Crafting for a Cause’ on Facebook and do some window shopping with links to the participating vendors,” Rightnour explained. “It will give you a nice of idea of things you might want to buy when you get to the show.”

Ask Kim Rightnour to describe herself and she’ll say, “I am a crafter.” She’s also a business owner, community organizer and member of Columbia Women of the Moose. And in her most recent role, she’s chair of the committee for Crafting for a Cause, a craft show that will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, at Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St. Rightnour, who owns Kim’s Prim co in Columbia, first organized a craft show last fall. “After COVID hit, a lot of us crafters had a lot of supplies on hand but nowhere to share our crafts,” she recalled. Not only were small businesses suffering, she said, but so was the Columbia Moose Lodge, which lost income due to closing. To help remedy the situation, Rightnour handpicked crafters to set up in the parking lot of the lodge. The event was so successful, she decided to do it again and to expand. “I had 32 crafters in the fall, but we’ll have room for more at the park,” she stated. “We have space for up to 75 crafters.” Participants will include Kim’s Prim co, Brianna Folds Books, Yo Yos Etc., Sparkle & Spill Fluid Art Creations, Bonerz Gourmet Dog Treats and more. Rose’s Deli will offer food, and Bricker’s Famous French Fries

Spring Fling from pg 1 co-chair of the Spring Fling committee. “We have a rummage stand with clothing, shoes and handbags. Everything we sell is either made by or donated by our church and community members.” Spring Fling also includes a plant sale. “We will have lots and lots of plants and birdhouses or other yard decorations,” Ream noted. “The plant table is our biggest money maker.” Chicken corn soup will be sold by the quart or will be available by the bowl to enjoy on site. Additional food for sale includes coffee and doughnuts, as well as hamburgers and sausages. “We will have tables set up so people can sit outside and enjoy their meal,” Ream said. Spring Fling also includes an opportunity for community members to set up yard sale tables at the
event. “We rent the space for people who want to sell their own items,” Ream noted. “We can also rent them a table if they need one.” Proceeds from Spring Fling benefit church projects. “We are planning on using the money to replace carpeting in the sanctuary,” Ream stated. “We also hope to put some of it toward a roof repair we need.” The church is home to the community food bank and also houses Phoebe’s Closet, a community clothing bank. Local groups including Boy Scouts use the church space for meetings as well. The church holds services on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. Ream said Hope United Methodist has been holding an annual Spring Fling event since the mid-2000s, although last year’s event was canceled due to COVID. She encourages anyone to stop by for homemade food and to pick up a bargain or two. Mask wearing and social distancing are recommended. “Come out for breakfast or lunch and do some shopping,” she said. “It’s a really nice time to get out and meet people or see people you haven’t seen in a long time. It’s just a fun day for the community.” For more information on Spring Fling or to preorder chicken corn soup, call the church at 717-252-2609.

Turkey Hill Country Classic Will Return To Manor Township BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Manor Township has announced that it will host the annual Turkey Hill Country Classic on Saturday, May 1, at the Central Manor Church of God, 387 Penn St., Washington Boro. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Manor Township was forced to cancel the races last year. In February of this year, however, the township notified the community that it plans to host the event. As a result of government guidelines, the event will look different this year. It will still consist of three running races: a half marathon starting at 7 a.m., a 10K starting at 9 a.m., and a 5K starting at 9:30 a.m. There will be portable toilets, and free water will be offered to runners. This will be an in-person, rain-or-shine event, and will give the community a chance to have fun and enjoy their run, said J. Ryan Strohecker, Manor Township manager. He added that the township is doing everything it can to make the Country Classic happen this year and return to normal in the future. Preregistration is open and can be completed by visiting http://manortownship.net and clicking on “Turkey Hill Country Classic Registration.” Preregistrants
must pick up their race number and T-shirt (while supplies last) prior to the race. These items can only be picked up at the Manor Township offices located at 950 West Fairway Drive. If preregistrants do not pick up these items, they will need to fully register again and pay as a same-day registrant on the day of the race. On the day of the race, runners will not have to check in. Same-day registration will be held near the front doors of the church and will open one hour prior to the start of each race. Bib numbers and T-shirts (while supplies last) will be handed out at this time to same-day registrants. There will be a small awards ceremony after all winners are determined. “One person commented online that this event is just one step closer to getting back to normal,” said Strohecker. “If we can pull this off in a responsible way, then it’s a step. Not a big step, but a step. People are itching to get back out there, and we’re excited to help make that happen.” For more information about the Turkey Hill Country Classic, visit the prevously mentioned website or call 717-397-4769. Keep up to date on the event by searching for “Turkey Hill Country Classic” on Facebook.

Columbia Boys Athletic Association and the Columbia Borough School District. Columbia High School senior Emma Grove will recite Joyce Kilmer’s poem “Trees.” Emma is the daughter of Alegra and Christopher Grove. After graduation, she plans to attend a four-year university on a pre-med track, specializing in pediatric emergency medicine. Columbia High School 2020 honors graduate Morgan Williams, who was scheduled to participate in last year’s event, will recite the poem “Arbor Day” by Annette Wynne. Morgan is the daughter of Kyle and Becky Williams. She currently attends Dickinson College. Kloidt explained that Arbor Day is held annually across the country during the month of April. In Pennsylvania, it is always held on the last Friday in April. “Arbor Day is held to make people aware of and have a greater appreciation for trees and the many ways in which they are useful - economically, environmentally and psychologically,” Kloidt noted. He said the celebration will be fun and educational, adding, “Come to the event for an enjoyable evening, and get to know more about trees and how the Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission works hard through the year to maintain street trees in the borough.”
The Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission and the Columbia Tree Society will celebrate Arbor Day at Locust Street Park, Sixth and Locust streets, on Friday, April 30, beginning at 6 p.m. “Arbor Day is a celebration of springtime and renewal and an appreciation for nature and trees as they provide beauty when they blossom this time of year,” said Bill Kloidt, chairman of the Arbor Day celebration. “It is also a time to inform everyone of the importance of trees in our environment.” Mark Zeamer, secretary and treasurer of the Old Columbia Public Grounds Company, which has overseen and maintained the Locust Street Park since 1826, will serve as master of ceremonies. Additional speakers will be featured, including Rick Hartlieb of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry, who will present Columbia with its 29th consecutive Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA award. Since last year’s Arbor Day celebration was canceled due to the pandemic, those who were to receive awards last year will be recognized with award winners this year. Musical selections will be played throughout the ceremony by the Columbia High School chorus under the direction of Rick Jensen. Cub Scout Pack 35 and Boy Scout Troop 35 will serve as the color guard to open the event, and Frontier Girls Troops 191 and 202 will assist in the distribution of programs. This year’s ceremony will be dedicated to Dean Little and Clarissa Wolcott. Barry Ford will also be recognized for his contributions to the

Volunteers and staff members of participating nonprofits will be invited to a Give Local York Showcase to be held at the York Revolution’s PeoplesBank Park, Given said. “In the past, we’ve held Give Local York during First Friday in York, and we did a street fair, but we are not quite ready to resume that just yet, so this is a way we can control attendance and host a smaller-scale event,” she stated. “The public will still be able to see what’s going on through our livestream from 7 to 9 p.m., and we’ll have nonprofits doing presentations and demonstrations.” The Showcase will conclude with an in-park fireworks show at 9 p.m. that will also be livestreamed, followed by a livestreamed concert from 9 to 11:55 p.m., before the grand total of the fundraiser is revealed at midnight on Saturday, May 8. The goal for the event is for 13,500 donors to make a gift, Given said, noting that since its founding, GLY has raised more than $8 million for local nonprofits from more than 15,000 donors. “We have so many nonprofits here in York County who are doing amazing work, from food insecurity to animals, veterans’ services, early childhood education,” she emphasized. “Anything you are passionate about, there is a nonprofit out there working hard to support the cause. And even if you may not have directly benefited from an organization, you know someone who has, either a family member or a friend or someone else in the community. We want to shine a light on these organizations and remind everyone that this is what makes our community great.” For more information on Give Local York or to give on May 7, visit www.givelocalyork.org.

Columbia High School’s May Day court has been announced. This year’s queen candidates are Anonya Bland, Amelia Campbell, Cassidy Cook, Jada Dyson, Cleo Grove, Emma Grove, Madison Hedgepeth, Daniela Moreta and Breanna Murphy. The male members of the May Court are Aiden Gladfelter, Dave Graham, Blake Helton, David Hershey, Ryan Hinkle, Carter Houck, Tanner Ness, Artie Poindexter and Michael Poole. The 76th annual May Day event will be held in the high school’s gym on Saturday, May 1, at 7 p.m. Due to COVID, tickets are limited and no outside spectators will be allowed. May Day celebrates the coming of the spring and usually brings together the community, students, and parents. Each year, a junior and sophomore together work with a
committee of community members to plan the event. Seniors are chosen by their peers to participate in the May Day court, and the girls choose a male senior to escort them. Students of the senior class vote on a May Queen, with the winner announced at the May Day celebration. After the announcement, the May Court pairs participate in a waltz. Students from Columbia School District are invited to dance in a traditional Maypole dance, engaging students of all ages in the tradition. Each year, the event committee chooses entertainment for the celebration. This year, students from Columbia High School’s “Aladdin” will be singing, and a baton performance will be presented. In a typical year, the event also includes an elementary school dance group.
