MHALC Offers Mental Health Support By Dayna M. Reidenouer
A lot has been said lately about the importance of physical health as it pertains to the novel coronavirus. However, as people stay confined to their homes or report to jobs where they might be putting themselves at risk of illness, mental health must not be forgotten. “It is just as important to take protective action and precautions for your mental health as you would for your physical health. One cannot exist without the other,” advised Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “COVID-19 has changed the way we think about things. Where we had safety, we have insecurities. We are also conflicted with feeling anxious but also
grateful for some of the gifts that we have received as a result of this crisis. The forced series of events and feelings associated with them can throw our equilibrium off.” MHALC’s mission is to promote optimal mental health through advocacy, education, and support, so the organization has stepped up its efforts to help individuals cope with these trying times. “The uncertainty is what’s unsettling,” McDevitt said. “It’s important to remember, in spite of this all, you still have control over your day-to-day.” Both solitude and unrelenting closeness can be challenges. For people who seek connection, McDevitt recommended video chats with friends and family or calling someone they might not have talked to in a while. She noted that it is valuable to ask three simple questions
of someone who might be struggling with loneliness: Do you feel left out? Do you lack companionship? Do you feel isolated? The answers to these questions can help lonely people acknowledge their isolation and begin to open contact with others in a supportive social network. “Research shows that just reaching out and being there for someone can truly save a life,” said MHALC child/family advocate Gretchen Gaudioso. Hugs and even handshakes have been sacrificed for social distancing, and the lack of physical contact can have a real impact. McDevitt recommended snuggling with pets or meditating to achieve calmness when needing touch. Conversely, designating a getaway spot in a house or apartment and then See MHALC pg 4

Bryanna Still has always loved music. “I began my interest in music at a really young age,” said Bryanna. “I grew up listening to soulful old rhythm and blues and a lot of ’70s and ’80s music. Having that start really inspired me to be passionate about music.” In the fall, the Dayspring Christian Academy senior will head to Edinboro University in northern Pennsylvania to begin a double major in art and music therapy, an ambitious eight-year program that will earn her a doctorate in those subject areas. Bryanna’s journey to this point has not been likely, but her talents, love of art and music, and determination to succeed have helped her discover her potential and have influenced others, such as Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), to take notice. SWAN is an after-school music program for School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org. Bryanna Still of Lancaster, a senior at Dayspring Christian Academy, plans to use her musical and artistic talents to help others as she matriculates at Edinboro University in the fall with the goal of becoming an art and music therapist.

Schreiber Center Names Ambassadors Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development has announced the children who will serve as its ambassadors this year. The stories among the ambassadors are all different, and their challenges are unique, but their families have one thing in common: They sought and received assistance from Schreiber, 625 Community Way, Lancaster. David Albino, who turned 5 in January, was born with cerebral palsy. He started services with Schreiber when he was an infant and now receives occupational, physical and speech-language therapies and attends Schreiber’s S.T.A.R.S. preschool. As a result of his work at Schreiber, David has learned to sit up, stand, speak and walk and continues to improve his ability to move independently with his walker and to speak more clearly and with more words to better communicate. He and his parents live in Lititz. Cooper Brubaker, who is 6 years old, was born

began leading group lessons at Price and Lafayette elementary schools. Vuolo noted that the teachers were acutely aware of Bryanna’s character and skill. “Her ability to work with traumatized children and their behavioral and scholastic failures convinced me she will indeed be a great music and art therapist someday,” said Vuolo. Bryanna credits her father, Clifford Still, with helping her to develop her interest in art. Clifford was incarcerated most of Bryanna’s life, and he is now deceased. “My dad would send me letters with drawings, or he would ask me to draw something and send it back. That is how I connected with my father,” Bryanna
recalled. “I couldn’t sing to my dad, but I could draw for him, and I wanted to practice my art and get better at it. I wanted my art to be an expression of who I was and to really echo my goals in life.” Looking ahead, Vuolo believes Bryanna’s past will affect her future in positive ways. “She is a woman of faith and has chosen to … direct the pain of her life to help others,” Vuolo said. “I have witnessed her tremendous successes such as the many times that she has stepped up ... front of audiences to not only perform, but to be an ambassador and spokesperson for the many children affected by parental incarceration and trauma. Her love for others fuels that bravery.”

Elle Haines, who will turn 6 in May, was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and receives all three therapy services at Schreiber, and she previously attended S.T.A.R.S. preschool. She works on a variety of skills at Schreiber, from climbing on playground equipment and hopping to language and social skills. Elle lives with her parents and her brother, Harper, in East Hempfield Township. Gabriel Morales, who turned 5 in November, came to Schreiber as a result of developmental delays that have affected his speech and left him with sensory processing issues. At Schreiber, he has learned how to speak more clearly so others can understand him. He has also overcome many of his sensitivities to textures, including sand and grass, which has helped him enjoy family vacations to the beach. building strength and endurance in his muscles. He has been coming to Schreiber for a little more than a year, and his mother, Nicole, said he has made tremendous progress. He and his parents live in Penn Township near Manheim. Jalaya Cooper, who turned 10 in January, was diagnosed with hypotonia, meaning low muscle tone, at the age of 7 months. Since then, she has received therapy to treat this condition and help her overcome a series of developmental delays. She receives all three therapies at Schreiber, working on fine motor skills in occupational therapy; focusing on core strength, balance and coordination in physical therapy; and improving her use of words, both in speaking and with a communication device. She and her parents live in Lancaster.

Bulk and large item pickup by Republic Services will be reinstated for Hellam Township residents effective Monday, May 11. These services had been temporarily suspended in select markets as the company realigned and reprioritzed its collection routes in response to the surge in residential curbside recycling and waste collections. The temporary suspension allowed Republic Services to ensure that it could effectively handle the additional volume in waste and recycling. gence as well as her talent, and SWAN helped to secure a scholarship for her to attend Dayspring Christian Academy in Mountville. Vuolo recalled that Bryanna’s grandmother, with whom she had been living, died in 2013 shortly before Bryanna was scheduled to sing the national anthem on the pitcher’s mound of the Barnstormers’ home stadium. The 11-year-old bravely completed the task and six months later soloed with the Dayspring Honors Choir in front of 2,500 people at the school’s Remember America Speaker series event featuring Dr. BenCarson. In the summer of 2018, SWAN held a summer camp, which provided 120 hours of instruction to local children. Bryanna was looking for a productive way to spend her summer, and she became a camp volunteer, assisting the teachers. After the SWAN camp ended, the teachers she had worked with suggested she be hired as a teacher for the SWAN team, and she

I couldn’t invest myself in a music class, but I started getting instruments of my own,” she recalled, noting that her neighbors on Green Street in Lancaster offered her old instruments to try or practice on. When she was 10, Bryanna started taking violin lessons and taking part in rhythm classes through SWAN. After completing a SWAN event at DoubleTree by Hilton Resort in Willow Street in 2013 Bryanna was waiting for her ride and singing along to “No One” by Alicia Keys as it played over the lobby speaker. According to Bryanna, Vuolo heard the singing and was impressed. “Diana came over and said, ‘We’re getting you (voice) lessons.’ That’s what started my singing career,” said Bryanna. Vuolo recognized Bryanna’s intelli-

MHALC from pg 1 informing cohabitants of a need for space before being overwhelmed may help with too much closeness, McDevitt said. Establishing a routine for all household members ensures that there is order to each day, with time for short breaks built in. It is normal to feel anxiety, but when it persists or there is little to no relief during the day, it can be a good thing to take the mental health screening at www.mhalancaster.org/screening-tools/. If any of the symptoms are persistent or impede daily function, professionally trained MHALC
staff members can provide a listening ear or guidance toward more intensive support, McDevitt said. MHALC has extended its hours to meet the increased need for 1-to-1 phone support, and it has created virtual support groups. “We have seen a spike on all of our online mental health screenings, most notably more than 50% increase on our anxiety and depression screenings,” McDevitt reported. More than half of the people who have taken the screenings have never received treatment. “This could be the first time they have experienced any symptoms or concern for their mental
health, or their mental health challenges have increased to the point where they may need support. Everyone is experiencing or is being affected by someone who is experiencing anxiety right now,” McDevitt said. Mental health treatment can be expensive, and McDevitt expressed concern for people who have lost their jobs and medical insurance and are unable to pay out of pocket for mental health supports. She noted that MHALC is currently working on connecting people to assistance. MHALC provides services free of charge to the public and relies heavily on charitable support. Its main fundrais-
ing event was scheduled in April and had to be canceled, so McDevitt suggested that individuals may contribute to the Mental Health Sustainability Fund by visiting www.mhalancaster.org/giveback/. A 24/7 mental health and crisis support line has been established for people dealing with anxiety or other difficult emotions. Individuals may call the tollfree warmline at 855-284-2494. Additionally, readers may find resources and helpful information by visiting www.mhalancaster.org/program-services-updates-page-covid-19/ or finding MHALC on Facebook.
Together, we can stop the spread. Are you in? Even as we make strides against COVID-19, it’s not time to let up. York County Libraries (YCL) member libraries are expanding delivery of online library services to meet the needs of community members while physical locations remain closed. Consistent with Gov. Wolf’s directive to close kindergarten through 12th-grade schools indefinitely, the Office of Commonwealth Libraries has instructed all Pennsylvania libraries to stay closed until further notice. All physical library materials currently checked out through YCL libraries have been renewed until May 27, and no fines will be assessed during the time of closure. Members are asked to hold onto borrowed materials and book donations until the libraries reopen. Library staff members are working remotely to ensure that York County residents have access to the library services they need through www.yorklibraries.org and social media. New books are being added weekly to YCL’s digital collection on Axis 360, which offers over 28,000 ebooks and audiobooks for loan. There are titles suitable for people of all ages. An additional service, Hoopla, provides instant access to over 58,000 movies, music recordings, comics, books, and audiobooks through the library website or Hoopla App. All Items on Axis 360 and Hoopla are available for free digital checkout with a YCL card. Community members without a library card are invited to request one online at the aforementioned website. The card is free. Year-round, libraries offer extensive databases and resources for school projects, research, and personal learning. With community members looking for interesting things to do at home, information services professionals created the YCL @Home Brain Bonanza. The first session kicked off on the website news blog with five questions about the theme “Notorious Fools.” This is a challenge that can be done as a group, individually, or among family members to see who can find the answers the fastest. New questions will be posted weekly. Youth services staff members are launching digital story times at 10 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays on the “York County Libraries” Facebook page. Storytellers will share books, finger plays, songs, and more. Each week’s story times will also be posted on the YCL News blog at the previously mentioned website.

Paul Davis Restoration of Central Pennsylvania is showing its appreciation to local firefighters, law enforcement personnel and emergency first responders with complimentary cleaning services during the pandemic. Trained technicians will clean and apply U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved disinfectants throughout area emergency personnel vehicles such as fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, and other first responder vehicles covering all common touch points and surfaces. Mike Oster, director of client services, and his staff team will perform additional first responder vehicle cleaning and applications of disinfectant on Thursday, May 7, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place at Park City Center and the former Sears automotive location, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster. Oster is also offering the free services to local public transportation authorities and retirement home transportation operators, along with other first responders. As the Paul Davis office anticipates increased interest in the additional cleaning events, Oster asks that participants communicate with the office in advance to know how many vehicles will be available for cleaning. To reserve times,
readers may email Oster at Michael.Oster @pauldavis.com. The company has taken proactive steps to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak. Paul Davis technicians are trained and equipped with personal protective equipment to handle pathogens and biohazards with approved products and high-tech equipment. A full-time team of trained technicians can respond day or night, with preemptive cleaning and an application of disinfectant to public areas, workspaces, or residences whether structures have been exposed to the virus or not. Cleaning and applying disinfectant to all materials and surfaces in community spaces are critical steps in safeguarding public health, especially in heavy-traffic areas. As essential service providers, Paul Davis teams continuously monitor and implement guidance from local, state, and national health agencies, using qualified and government-approved chemicals designated under the EPA emerging viral pathogen policy. For more information, readers may contact 717-291-6000 or the aforementioned email address, visit https://central-pennsylvania .pauldavis.com or search for the hashtag #firstserveothers.

AgChoice Farm Credit announced that it recently paid out $34 million in cash to eligible customer-owners, the largest distribution in the cooperative’s history. The York AgChoice branch team serves the local area. Patronage has been a part of AgChoice’s cooperative business model since the organization formed in 1999. The model allows AgChoice to build capital, invest in member services, share profits and lower the overall cost of borrowing to customer-owners. Annual cash payouts to customer-owners since 1999, including this year, total $346 million. This year’s patronage program returns 39 cents for every dollar that borrowers paid in interest on their AgChoice loans in 2019. In addition to lending, AgChoice offers business services and educational programs aligned with its shared purpose: “Inspiring Growth in Our Families, Businesses and Rural Communities.”
