You’re Invited To “A Night In The Big Apple” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
New York City is coming to Eastern York High School. Students will perform “A Night in the Big Apple” at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 21, and at 2:30 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 22. The show will be presented in the performing arts center of Eastern York High School, 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville.
The performance will begin with a short dialogue to set the scene in New York City. The dialogue was written by the cast, noted Rebecca Kurtek, director of drama and vocal director. “(Audiences can expect) Broadway classics from Irving Berlin to ‘Kiss Me Kate’ to ‘Guys and Dolls’ and more,” she said, adding that the production will include about 45 minutes of singing and dancing. Animal Shelter To Kick Off Concert Series uddly kittens, food and live music. If this sounds like your “purrfect” night, you’re in luck. The Columbia Animal Shelter will kick off its Summer Concert Series with a performance by Stu Huggens on Saturday, May 15. The concert will run from 5 to 8 p.m. at the shelter, 265 S. 10th St. “We started doing concerts last summer as a way to offer something when not much else was going on,” recalled Tammy Loughlin, executive director of the shelter. “We have a nice open field and a stage. There’s plenty of room for people to come with their own lawn chairs and spread out. It was well received last summer, so we decided to do it again this summer.” The concerts are free and will be offered on the third Saturday of each month through Oct. 16. “We encourage donations if you’re able to support us, and we also have a

season, she noted, adding that the shelter is always in need of items to support the cats. “We have a wish list on our website. … If anyone wants to bring something off that list when they come to the concert, that’s wonderful,” she remarked. Tours of the shelter will also be offered during the concert series, allowing visitors to meet the cats and dogs up for adoption. Additional concerts in the series are RiverRat Jenkins on June 19; Tropical Soul on July 17; The Werks on Aug. 21; Stu Huggens on Sept. 18; and Blue Voodoo on Oct. 16. “It’s just good, clean fun,” Loughlin said of the concert series. “It’s a fun way to get out, enjoy some great music and spend some time with your family.” For more information on the concerts or the Columbia Animal Shelter, visit https://columbiaanimal shelter.com or search for “Columbia Animal Shelter” on Facebook.

The show represents a bit of a departure for the school, which typically features a spring musical. “After having to cancel our production last year due to COVID, we wanted to make sure we could do something that was attainable if students had to quarantine, etc.,” Kurtek shared. “We also have been practicing about two times a week rather than every day during a typical musical season.” A total of 40 students will make up the cast, crew and pit orchestra. Anna Jowanowitch, president of the high school’s Broadway Knights, said the show offers an opportunity to do something that brings her joy. “We’ve built a really strong and tight-knit community with our theater program, and I love being a part of it and continuing to watch it
grow,” she stated. Anna, who is a senior, said “A Night in the Big Apple” will be an upbeat and energetic show. “It’s going to be a production filled with classics that anyone of any age would enjoy,” she remarked. Kurtek agreed, adding, “This is going to be a fun event for all ages with recognizable tunes and a small jazz pit orchestra. It’s sure to get people dancing in their seats and provide them the opportunity to watch a live musical production that has really been missed in the last year.” Tickets for “A Night in the Big Apple” are available at https://tinyurl.com/xpnyumy. We really emphasize to our youth the importance of service.” The youth group has a mission of serving locally, in other states and around the world, Bachman said. Service in other states includes trips like the one to Kentucky, where the group will complete home repairs, while world service includes participation in a 24-hour famine that supports World Vision, an organization dedicated to fighting gobal hunger. In the past, the youth group has focused on mission projects closer to home, and Bachman said he hopes to get back to that in 2022. “We’ve done a lot of projects in our school district,” he stated. “We’ve done home repairs, put in handicapped ramps, painted steps and other house projects.” The group raises funds through activities including the pulled pork dinner, which will be available by preorder and on the day of the event. To preorder a dinner, call 717-252-2539 and leave a message. The dinner will include pulled pork, a roll, a baked potato, applesauce and a dessert.

“We are a community youth group based out of Faith United Methodist, but it’s not necessarily just for kids from that church,” said Joe Bachman, youth group leader. “It’s open to any kids in the community from grades nine through 12.” The youth group meets on the first three Sundays of the month during the school year and wraps up the year with a mission trip. “We always ask the kids where they’d like to go for the mission trip,” Bachman noted. “They love road trips. We have been to a lot of places north and west of us, but we haven’t been south much, so that’s why we decided on Kentucky for our trip coming up in July.” On the way to its mission, the group will stop in West Virginia to enjoy some whitewater rafting. “Whenever we do service projects, we try to incorporate an element of fun,” Bachman explained. “We’ve gone bowling, played laser tag, been paintballing, gone to amusement parks. We’ve done anything and everything that’s fun because the kids stay interested when there’s a balance of working hard with service and having fun.
MERCHANDISER - Columbia/Hellam/Wrightsville Edition -
There’s so much to see and do in the river towns of Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville. That’s the message the Susquehanna National Heritage Area (NHA) wants to emphasize through its River Town Bucket List series. The series highlights stores, restaurants and places of interest in the towns. “We started this last year with a bucket list in Columbia, in partnership with our local parks and recreation committee, as a way to offer activities during the pandemic,” recalled Hope Byers, director of Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, which, along with Zimmerman Center for Heritage, is part of the nonprofit Susquehanna NHA. “It was a self-guided tour, and it offered a bunch of things to do that were out-
side and were free. It caught on so well, we decided to take it under the Susquehanna NHA umbrella and make a list for all of our river towns.” Marietta is the first town in the spotlight. Its bucket list will run through the spring, wrapping up at the end of May. Columbia will be featured during the summer through Labor Day, and then Wrightsville will be highlighted in the fall, with the list series ending in November. Megan Salvatore, visitor services representative for Susquehanna NHA at Columbia Crossing, came up with the ideas on the lists. “I’m from Columbia, and I live in Marietta, so I knew where some of the cool things were,” she explained. “I knew this would be a fun way to showcase some of the unique places in our
Stream Health Walk Planned Penn State Extension will offer a Stream Health and Riparian Buffer Walk on Saturday, May 22. The event will take place at Kreutz Creek in Clayton Eli Emig Park, 221 S. Prospect St., Hallam, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. All participants will receive a copy of “Roadside Guide to Clean Water,” a field guide to recognizing good practices in one’s community.
The walk will cover uneven terrain and include opportunities to get in the water, if desired. Appropriate footwear should be worn. There is a nominal cost to participate. For registration and details, visit https://extension.psu .edu/stream-health-and-riparian -buffer-walk. The registration deadline is Friday, May 21.
community.” Highlights of Marietta’s list include attending Marietta Day on Saturday, May 8, and visiting Shank’s Tavern to view high-water marks from floods of the past. People who participate in the series can also win prizes. “We are partnering with the local business association in each town,” Byers stated. “For the first list, the Marietta Area Business Association has put together a prize pack valued at over $200, with gift cards and swag from downtown merchants. If you do just one item on the bucket list and you submit your information on our website, you’ll be entered to win.” Participants who complete 10 items and submit their information will receive a free ice cream cone from Mulberry Thrill Sweet Treats Café, located at the rear of 100 W. Market St., Marietta. “The really fun part about these lists is it’s a mix of free things and things you have to pay for,” said Byers. “It’s an opportunity to support our local businesses if you can afford to do so, but if you can’t afford that, there are still adorable little things to
do and see around town.” Salvatore noted that the bucket lists offer something for everyone. “Whether you’re a visitor or a resident, the bucket list is going to take you on an authentic journey through town,” she remarked. “You’ll get to experience the history and heritage of our area, visit local businesses and get a new appreciation for everything these river towns have to offer.” For more information on the River Town Bucket List series, visit www.susquehannaheritage.org and click on “Explore.” Paper copies of the lists are also available at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St.

When Susquehanna Stage presents “Pippin” this month, be prepared for anything on stage. “Audiences can expect a broad spectrum of experiences while they watch this show,” said Gerson Malave, who plays the Leading Player. “You’ll see everything from magic on stage to life lessons.” “Pippin” follows the story of the title character and his search for meaning. “It’s about a guy who is trying to find his purpose in life,” explained Ryan Kimbark, who plays Pippin. “He wants to pursue his passion and figure out what he’s going to do and how he fits in.” Kayleigh Jarkowsky, who plays Catherine, said “Pippin” is full of action. “It’s going to be a very visual show,” she remarked. “You’re going to see a lot of magical moments. … You’re going to be on the edge of your seat the whole time.” “Pippin” is Susquehanna Stage’s first production of 2021, and it features a cast of 22 who range in age from 15 to 18, along with one young boy who is 7. For Maddie Ciliento, who plays Fastrada, the show offers a chance to perform for the first time since the pandemic canceled live theater. “The magical aspect of this
show is what drew me to it,” she stated, adding that as a recent high school graduate, she hopes to pursue musical theater as a career. “When you come back to live theater, you don’t want your first show back to be boring. You want to make an impression, and this show does.” Ryan, who is a junior at Lancaster Mennonite High School, said even though he participated in some virtual shows over the past year, he’s excited to get back to performing in front of an audience. “I have missed live theater so much,” he noted. “There is an energy that comes from having a live audience, and that makes it so much fun.” Gerson, who is a junior at Donegal High School, explained that he learned about auditions at Susquehanna Stage through a friend who regularly performs with the company. “Being a part of live theater has brought me so much happiness,” he stated. “I just love it.” Director Jim Johnson said “Pippin” makes a natural choice for a cast of teens because of its themes. “It’s a story of finding fulfillment and searching for your life goals,” Johnson stated. “I think that’s very applicable to young people. They’re trying to figure out where they fit in, too.” See “Pippin” pg 7

“Pippin” from pg 6 “Pippin” also fits nicely into Susquehanna Stage’s season, which focuses on “metatheater,” or shows within shows. Upcoming productions include “Noises Off” in June. “Noises Off” was originally scheduled to be performed earlier this year, but it was postponed due to the pandemic. Because the set had

on Zoom, a virtual escape room, activities via Discord, and hiking challenges. The information session about the construction at the future Kreutz Creek Library will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, on Zoom. It will be led by York County Libraries president Robert F. Lambert and Kreutz Creek Library branch manager Susan Nenstiel. Individuals interested in learning more about the construction project can register to attend the information session at www.yorklibraries.org/events. There is no charge to attend. Kinsley Construction Inc. is overseeing construction at the former Hellam Township building that is being transformed into a library. The new space spans 8,800 square feet and will house books, resources, and activities for children, teens, and adults. The building is over seven times the size of the current library. Kreutz Creek Library has been serving the community for 42 years in a 1,200-square-foot double-wide FEMA trailer that housed families displaced by Hurricane Agnes in the 1970s. The library anticipates moving to its future location by early fall. Questions about the construction can be addressed during the information session or submitted in advance by visiting www.yorklibraries.org and clicking “Contact Us” under “Contact YCL” toward the bottom of the page.
