SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LXIII • NO 13
Feline Fine In Columbia BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hen Tammy Jalbert became executive director of the Columbia Animal Shelter in 2019, she had a five-year plan. It included expanding the shelter’s low-cost wellness clinic and hiring a full-time vet. It didn’t take that long to reach her goals. “Even with the pandemic, we were able to achieve this in fewer than five years,” said Jalbert, noting that the organization recently hired Dr. Lindsay McMenemy as a full-time veterinarian. “The local community not only needs this, but there’s a nationwide basic need for low-cost vet services.” Jalbert noted that across the country, there is a shortage of qualified veterinarians. “We are so lucky to have found Lindsay and to be working with her,” she said. “If we can offer low-cost services, we can meet our goal of keeping pets in people’s homes. So many people are facing challenges with paying for vet care and pet care and everything their pets need.”
W
McMenemy was hired in March, and her arrival allowed the clinic to expand from just a few days a month of services to full-time care. “We are not a hospital, but we can do minor sick visits, minor surgeries like spay or neuter and give vaccines,” Jalbert noted. With the new veterinarian, the shelter - currently home to 70 cats and a handful of dogs - is expanding its humane education initiatives as well, having partnered with the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s Shelter Medicine Program. “Our goal is to get into local schools and teach (students) things like pet responsibility, the importance of spaying and neutering, dogbite prevention and things like that,” Jalbert said, noting that she also hopes to bring school groups in for tours of the shelter. The shelter has also set up a book nook at Columbia Public Library and will host a reading program at the library in August to further spread its message of responsible pet ownership. See Feline pg 5

Many people find success by thinking bigger. For Jim Flowers, it’s all about thinking smaller. Flowers, who lives in Marietta, has been creating scale replicas of the façades of local buildings for the past few years. He typically works in a scale of one inch to one foot and completes the façades in painstaking detail, including bricks, shingles, stones and shutters. Beginning in 1995, Jim operated Flowers in the Kitchen, an Elizabethtown-based restaurant, with See Details pg 2
On Saturday, May 28, you can take in a sweeping view of Columbia, get some exercise and raise money for a local nonprofit at the same time. The Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery will hold the Mount Bethel Cemetery Memorial 5K, with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. in the gym of Columbia High School, 901 Ironville Pike. The race will kick off at 8:30 a.m. The event is named as a nod to the holiday it precedes as well as to memorialize those interred at the cemetery, where gravesites date to Charles Leader tests the course he designed for the Mount Bethel Cemetery Memorial 5K.

blueprints, making a layout of the building’s windows, doors and other special features. His replicas typically begin with a frame of one-by-threeinch plywood. He then constructs the façade in detail, with special attention paid to paint colors and materials. Although he strives for accuracy, he will make one exception: “I put candles in each window,” he explained. “Even if you don’t have candles in the window of your house, I’m putting them in there. They look nice.” Jim can spend up to 80 hours working on a façade. He’s quick to point out that although that’s technically two weeks of work, at 40 hours a week, he’s not putting in long days. At 83, he’s taking his time to complete each façade. “I might work an hour, then take a nap,” he said. “Sometimes, I’ll work for half an hour in a day. Some days, I’ll work for a few hours at a time.”
A façade of a 19th-century house in Marietta, now home to The GateHouse
His façade workshop is set up in the living room of the home he shares with his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. Over the years, he’s completed façades of buildings throughout Lancaster County, including the Marietta Community House, the Maytown Historical Society museum, the Haldeman Mansion and countless private homes.

his wife, Pollyann, and his daughter, Laura. While there, he created his first façade when he replicated the restaurant. The business eventually closed, and Jim didn’t think about doing another façade until his wife passed away three years ago. “I had nothing to do, and I needed something to do,” Jim said simply, describing how he got into the work. Jim has always had a creative side. He and his wife sold handmade items at craft shows throughout the region, featuring Pollyann’s counted cross stitch and Jim’s wooden folk art. His façade work is all self-taught, he said. To start a project, Jim finds a building that strikes his fancy. “Most of the time, I’ll get permission to make one, but if someone says ‘no,’ I’ll probably do it anyway,” he stated with a laugh. “I pick something I like, I measure it and I take pictures.” He also creates custom

Building the replicas not only fills his days with purpose, Jim said, but it allows him to indulge his creativity on his own schedule, and he doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. “I do what I want when I want and how I want,” he said. “I just enjoy it.” Jim will take orders for façades of homes or businesses. Feline from pg 1 In April, Columbia Animal Shelter launched Senior Cats for Senior Laps, bringing some of its older felines to visit residents at local retirement homes. “It’s a great opportunity to match seniors with senior cats,” Jalbert said. “It’s been proven that seniors do so much better with daily companionship, and senior pets are often overlooked when all they want to do is be somebody’s lap cat. It’s a perfect match.” Jalbert remarked that the summer tends to be an especially active time for the shelter, with this year’s events including a concert series held on the second Saturday of each month through October; a cornhole tournament on Sunday, May 22; and a Cruisin’ for Cats car show on Saturday, July 30. McMenemy noted that it’s the perfect time to come on board at the organization. “I
came from a background in shelter medicine, and to have the opportunity to build affordable vet services from the ground up is very exciting,” she said. Columbia Animal Shelter is located at 265 S. 10th St. For more information, visit https://columbiaanimal shelter.com.

“Come out and enjoy a beautiful view overlooking the town and the Susquehanna River,” Hohenadel said, encouraging people to register for the 5K. “There will be plenty of parking, and it’s easy to register. It’s also a great way to help us maintain the history of the cemetery.” The event is made possible by the sponsorships of multiple businesses and organizations, including Columbia Fraternal Association, Foresters of America Court Susquehanna 235, Columbia American Legion Post 372, Columbia Lions Club, KleenRite Corp., Melanie B. Scheid Funeral Directors & Cremation Services, Nikolaus & Hohenadel, Sunsnappers and Truist Bank. To register for the 5K, visit www.mtbethelcemetery.org. Same-day registration will also be available. For more information, call 717-681-6768.
the 1700s. “There used to be a Memorial Day weekend 5K that was organized through the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce, but when the Chamber dissolved, so did the 5K,” explained Kathy Hohenadel, who is coordinating the Mount Bethel race with Claire Storm. “We wanted to bring the race back to Columbia.” The coordinators tapped Charles Leader to map the course. “He’s been the crosscountry coach for Columbia High School and an avid runner his whole life,” Hohenadel stated. “I went to him for some insight in putting together a course that would have minimal street closures.” Although she initially considered holding the race in the cemetery, she soon realized there wasn’t enough room, but the high school made a perfect location. Leader created a mixed-terrain course that will include sidewalks, macadam, grass and the Columbia High School track. “It will feature different inclines, and it’s a good course for both walkers and runners,” Hohenadel said. Because of the terrain, the race is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers, and no pets or cleats are allowed. Awards will be presented in a variety of categories, including overall male and female winners and the first three male and female finishers in 13 age brackets. Proceeds from the race will be used for maintenance of the cemetery, located at 700 Locust St.
