Golfing For A Good Cause BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Playing golf on Friday, June 11, can help support economic development in Columbia. That’s when the Columbia Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) will hold a golf tournament at Cool Creek Golf Club, 300 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and the tournament will kick off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine. “We are a not-for-profit organization … dedicated to promoting business development and expansion
within Columbia,” explained Bill Kloidt, executive director of CEDC. “Proceeds from the golf tournament help finance our organization in promoting Columbia and assisting new businesses that wish to open in the borough.” “This is the fourth year the CEDC has hosted a golf tournament,” said Keith Lutz, CEDC president. The organization had to cancel last year’s tournament, so this year is especially exciting, he noted. “We are very optimistic about this event,” he said. “People are ready to come out to an outdoor event like this, and we’re ready for them.” See Golfing pg 6
The Columbia Market House will celebrate its grand reopening on Saturday, May 29.
Columbia Market House Will Celebrate Grand Reopening once-vital building in Columbia is coming back to life. The Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., will celebrate its grand reopening on Saturday, May 29, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We have an entire weekend of events planned to celebrate the long-anticipated reopening of the Market House,” said Kelsey Miller, healthy communities manager at CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, which manages the market. She noted that the original Columbia market dates to 1869. “Each event has been planned to highlight the different aspects of the building,” she said. On the night before the grand reopening, a sold-out event called “Taste of the Market” will be held, featuring the market’s restaurant, Gypsy Kitchen. “On opening day, our 20 market vendors will be the main showcase, with special
“The market will feature an eclectic mix of vendors for customers to shop and an exciting place for members of the Columbia community to gather.” “Sunday is a food truck day meant to celebrate families, offering a free meal or treat from one of the food trucks to the first 450 people who registered and familyfriendly activities. Vendors will not be open on Sunday; it is a chance to celebrate the community and the reopening of their building.”
Inviting the public to a golf tournament are (from left) Columbia Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) board members Ben Gorman and Denis Marino, along with CEDC executive director Bill Kloidt, CEDC president Keith Lutz and golf committee consultant Jack Gamby.
Among the 20 vendors in the Columbia Market House are Bear Fruit, selling fruit-based desserts; Dough Heads Stuffed Waffles stuffed waffle sandwiches and coffee/espresso; Freinschaft Soup and Cellar handmade sandwiches, soups, and cooking essentials; and Just 4 Paws and Hooves dog, cat and horse treats. The market will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. “The market will feature an eclectic mix of vendors for customers to shop and an exciting place for members of the Columbia community to gather,” Miller noted. “Many of our vendors can only be found at the Columbia Market House, and we are committed to bringing high-quality foods and products into the borough.” Bringing the market back to Columbia has been a long process that began in 2018. “Restoring a public market as the center for fresh foods in downtown Columbia gives residents access to high-quality,
The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC) recently relocated from Linden Street in Columbia to a space within the John Wright Restaurant in Wrightsville, and the new location will help the Chamber continue to serve the community even more effectively, said Rachel Stebbins, executive director.

The performance will begin with a short dialogue to set the scene in New York City. The dialogue was written by the cast, noted Rebecca Kurtek, director of drama and vocal director. “(Audiences can expect) Broadway classics from Irving Berlin to ‘Kiss Me Kate’ to ‘Guys and Dolls’ and more,” she said, adding that the production will include about 45 minutes of singing and dancing. The show represents a bit of a departure for the school, which typically features a spring musical. “After having to cancel our production last year due to COVID, we wanted to make sure we could do something that was attainable if students had to quarantine, etc.,” Kurtek shared. “We also have been practicing about two times a week rather than every day during a typical musical season.” A total of 40 students will make up the cast, crew and pit orchestra. Anna Jowanowitch, president of the high school’s Broadway Knights, said the show offers an opportunity to do something that brings her joy. “We’ve built a really strong and tight-knit community with our theater program, and I love being a part of it and continuing to watch it grow,” she stated. Anna, who is a senior, said “A Night in the Big Apple” will be an upbeat and energetic show. “It’s going to be a production filled with classics that anyone of any age would enjoy,” she remarked. Kurtek agreed, adding, “This is going to be a fun event for all ages

Front St., held a grand opening on May 4 and is an ideal location, she noted. “While it is undeniable that the building right off of Route 30 was very visible, guests had to want to come to the Chamber or Visitor Center specifically. There was no foot traffic,” Stebbins noted. “At (John Wright Restaurant), we have something of a captive audience for our visitor’s area in that thousands of guests come through the building each week.” The new location features an office space, two TVs highlighting area businesses and events, and a space for promoting local attractions and gift items. Several factors prompted the Chamber’s move, Stebbins noted, including the inability to hold
fundraisers in 2020 due to the pandemic. Former executive director Beverly Shank and the board had to take a hard look at the viability of the space in Columbia, which had seen a drastic reduction in visitors. “It really came down to the building being used mostly as a very expensive rest stop and oversized office for one to three staff,” Stebbins explained. “Financially, that just didn’t make sense.” The board considered several options for the Chamber’s new space and also asked for input from Chamber members, but this didn’t produce any viable choices, she said. Then the Chamber learned that the owner of the gift shop that had been renting the space at John Wright Restaurant was moving, and

local products within walking distance,” Miller remarked. “The Market House has a rich history as the center for commerce and connection in the community. We are excited for it to return to its glory, so generations to come can make the same memories as those in the past. It acts as a place for old and new friendships to blossom, a place to get away on Saturday morning for coffee and a treat, or somewhere to grab your meal essen-
tials for the week.” The Market House will be available to rent for special occasions such as baby showers or small weddings, Miller said, and the facility has a large seating area with approximately 100 seats, which can be flexibly arranged to accommodate groups. Catering for special events will be available by Gypsy Kitchen. For more information on the market, visit www.columbiapamarkethouse.org.

as Stebbins put it, “It all just clicked.” SVCC serves Columbia, Marietta and Wrightsville boroughs and the surrounding areas, and the new space will allow the Chamber to continue support of the community as well as to add some new programs. “Our goal is to strengthen the business environment in the boroughs by being a resource for information and education, providing networking opportunities and helping to promote businesses and their events,” said Stebbins, who became executive director in January. “We are working to build educational breakfasts, networking opportunities and make more in-person visits around the three boroughs to get to know
businesses and what they want from SVCC.” The visitor’s area of the Chamber’s office is open whenever the restaurant is open, and although Stebbins is the only full-time staff member for the Chamber, she emphasized that her schedule is flexible to meet the needs of businesses and organizations. She added that the move to York County doesn’t mean the Chamber is changing its focus. “The Chamber is doing our best to support all three boroughs,” she stated. “Our physical location has to be somewhere, but I have a car, a driver’s license and the desire to go meet with owners and managers and find out how we can work together. … We’re here to listen and help everyone.”

Retro Road Trip: PA’s Drive-In Movie Theaters WENDY ROYAL
There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car. Golfing from pg 1 Some of the little acts of kindness that our staff do for our residents include.... • Delivering the newspapers to the residents so that they can read the newspaper while they enjoy breakfast in bed. • Driving a resident to a medical appointment and taking the long way home in order to go past the neighborhood where he lived as a child and listening to him describe how the area used to look. • Taking the time to iron a resident’s pair of slacks just like the way she used to iron them for herself.
Our staff make it their mission to do those little things for our residents.

People may sign up to participate as individuals or as a team of four, Kloidt said. “If you sign up individually, we will assign you to a team,” he stated. The event will include beverages on the course and lunch at the end of the tournament. Contests and prizes include closest to the pin, longest drive and first-, second- and third-place prizes. A 50-50 drawing and giveaway drawing baskets will also be featured. Lutz will address the group and give an update on some of the CEDC projects that are currently underway. One of the biggest projects the CEDC is working on involves restoration of the Hotel Locust, which the group purchased in 2015. It took a few years, but the group found an investor who is working to return the building to its former grandeur, Kloidt said, and turn it into a business anchor in downtown Columbia.
“It’s going to be a mixed-use property,” explained Lutz, adding that construction is set to begin at the end of the year. “There will be commercial space on the first floor and residential rental units on the upper floors.” Other projects of the CEDC have included securing funding for the Turkey Hill Experience and the placement of plaques on historic buildings throughout Columbia. “The plaques ... highlight the historical significance of Columbia,” Lutz said. “That’s something we’re really proud of.” The group is working with the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of
Commerce and the Columbia Historical Society to launch a walking tour of 15 locations in Columbia later this year. Kloidt and Lutz noted that the golf tournament is not only a way to promote the activities of the CEDC, but it also provides a chance for networking and fellowship. “It’s a nice event,” Kloidt remarked. “You’re outdoors, you’re off on a Friday playing golf, and you can spend time with your fellow associates in the business world who want to see Columbia thrive.” To register for the CEDC golf tournament, visit www.columbia-edc.org or call Kloidt at 717-201-5134.

In the past, the youth group has focused on mission projects closer to home, and Bachman said he hopes to get back to that in 2022. “We’ve done a lot of projects in our school district,” he stated. “We’ve done home repairs, put in handicapped ramps, painted steps and other house projects.” The group raises funds through activities including the pulled pork dinner, which will be available by preorder and on the day of the event. To preorder a dinner, call 717-252-2539 and leave a message. The dinner will include pulled pork, a roll, a baked potato, applesauce and a dessert.

We’ve done anything and everything that’s fun because the kids stay interested when there’s a balance of working hard with service and having fun. We really emphasize to our youth the importance of service.” The youth group has a mission of serving locally, in other states and around the world, Bachman said. Service in other states includes trips like the one to Kentucky, where the group will complete home repairs, while world service includes participation in a 24-hour famine that supports World Vision, an organization dedicated to fighting gobal hunger.

York Youth Revolution will host a pulled pork dinner on Saturday, May 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, 126 E. Market St., Hellam. The meal will be available for pickup only, and the proceeds will benefit the youth group’s upcoming mission trip to Winchester, Ky. “We are a community youth group based out of Faith United Methodist, but it’s not necessarily just for kids from that church,” said Joe Bachman, youth group leader. “It’s open to any kids in the community from grades nine through 12.” The youth group meets on the first three Sundays of
the month during the school year and wraps up the year with a mission trip. “We always ask the kids where they’d like to go for the mission trip,” Bachman noted. “They love road trips. We have been to a lot of places north and west of us, but we haven’t been south much, so that’s why we decided on Kentucky for our trip coming up in July.” On the way to its mission, the group will stop in West Virginia to enjoy some whitewater rafting. “Whenever we do service projects, we try to incorporate an element of fun,” Bachman explained. “We’ve gone bowling, played laser tag, been paintballing, gone to amusement parks.
