Art In The Gardens BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Inspiration can be found in the backyards of Columbia. The Art in the Gardens tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, and will feature seven gardens. “This is the third year we’re doing this under the direction of Create Columbia,” said Kathy Hohenadel, adding that Create Columbia is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the town and art. “We have a mixture of new and returning gardens on the tour. We like to pick gardens that are all a little different from one another to give the tour a nice variety.”
Columbia Public Library director Lisa Greybill invites the community to take part in the library’s Summer Reading Program.

nimals, magic, music and more will take the spotlight when Columbia Public Library hosts its Summer Reading Program. The Summer Reading Program’s theme is “Tails and Tales,” and the program, which kicked off June 5, will run through Saturday, Aug. 14. “We have a really good variety of programs for all ages,” said Lisa Greybill, director of the library, who added that she begins planning the library’s summer schedule in December. “The county gives us five programs, and then I come up with the rest.” She said this year, she wanted to bring even more people to the programs, so she made a change from past years. “I added several evening programs, beginning at 6 p.m.,” she stated. “That way, if people are working during the day, they can come to these at night. And we still have a lot of programs during the day for people who can’t come in the evening.”
log at the library or use an app called Beanstack to track their reading. “All children who participate and return their log will receive a free Barnstormers lawn ticket,” Greybill said, noting that additional prizes vary by age group. She acknowledged that the Summer Reading Program would not happen without the financial support of D.H. Funk & Sons, as well as the Old Columbia Public Grounds Company, which allows the library to use the park for its programs, and the Columbia Lions Club, who allows use of the park’s gazebo. After last year’s Summer Reading Program was virtual-only, Greybill is excited to return to in-person programs this year. “We need to keep kids reading over the summer,” she stated. “We want them to realize that reading takes place outside of the classroom, and it’s not just for school. We want them to make reading a lifelong habit.” For more information on the Summer Reading Program, visit https://columbiapubliclibrary.org/.

Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager at Occupational Development Center (ODC), is just a little biased when he talks about the coffee he and other staff members chose to be ODC’s selection from Wanderlust Coffees. “It’s just a really good coffee - not too strong, not weak,” said Mueller, who now purchases the coffee beans in five-pound bags. “It’s the only coffee I drink now. It is so good.”

Highlights of the program include Tiny Tales, featuring bubbles and play time for children up to 18 months old, as well as two new partnerships the library has made. “ We’re working with Allison Scholz of Columbia Crossing, who is going to run a Junior Ranger program for us, and with Grace Julian of The Edible Classroom, who is going to offer Garden Camp,” Greybill shared. She said she is particularly excited about Servant Stage, a theater organization, which will perform “Old-Time Gospel Hour,” as well as programs led by Ryan “The Bug Man” Bridge, juggler Chris Ivey and Fred “Phredd” McNaughton, who will perform a concert for families. “A really cool program we’re having is an evening with Ran’D Shine, who is an illusionist and mind reader,” Greybill noted. “I would encourage teens and adults to come out for his program. He will literally give you chills.” Participants in the Summer Reading Program can pick up a reading
Some of the gardens have water features, some focus on backyard entertaining and others pack a powerful punch in a small space. “This year, we have the garden of Kelsey Frey, who is a naturalist, and her garden reflects that,” Hohenadel stated. The garden of Justin and Jennifer Albright features fruit trees, a raised bed and a water feature, while the garden of Bob and Cindy Nikolaus is full of colorful perennials and primitives. The garden of Paul and Roseann Nikolaus mixes trees, shrubs and hardscape and also includes a raised bed victory garden. At the garden of Dave and Vivian Rupp, ornamental trees and perennials complement a goldfish pond. Doris Weisser’s garden includes a pool and pavilion with a working fireplace, while the garden of Joe and Deb Weisser features a pond and colorful plantings. Each garden will host an artist on site, who will create art en plein air during the tour.

COLUMBIA - HELLAM - WRIGHTSVILLE
BY CATHY MOLITORIS Published By
One hundred years ago, 16 men had an idea. They wanted to create an American Legion post in Marietta to honor veterans, and they had one particular person in mind to be its namesake. Marietta American Legion William Brenner Post 466 was founded on May 21, 1921, and was named for Brenner, a Marietta resident who joined the United States Army in 1917. Brenner’s unit was sent to France as part of the expeditionary force in World War I, and he was killed in action in northern France in June of 1918. Over the years, the Marietta Legion has grown not only in membership, but also in the scope of its service. Today, the post has more than 800 members and hosts four organizations under its umbrella: the Legionnaires, the Sons of the American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary and the Legion Riders. “The William Brenner American Legion Post 466 has

presidents and commanders of Post 466 to their future counterparts. Shireman said the post has remained very active in the community since its inception. “We started a Hometown Hero banner program to recognize our veterans, and we are proud sponsors of the Marietta Memorial Day Parade committee,” he stated. “American Legion 466 sponsors a baseball field at the War Memorial Park. We support the Marietta summer rec program by paying the entry fee for children of Marietta residents, and we support other community groups such as Pioneer Fire Company, Marietta Community House and the Marietta Historical Society.” Post members also support local Boy Scout
troops, Donegal sports programs, Relay For Life and local food banks. Shireman said the post is always looking for new members. “If you are a veteran, or a son or daughter of a veteran, you should consider joining the American Legion for the support not only by our post locally, but you would also have a voice on the national level,” he explained, referring to the National American Legion’s efforts in Washington, D.C. “The Marietta American Legion is a place that promotes veterans’ rights while providing that safe, warm place for fellowship.” For more information on Marietta American Legion Post 466, visit https:// mariettalegion.com.

lasted 100 years due to the commitment of many volunteers out of the respect for our fallen and POW heroes,” said Steven Shireman, post financial officer and chair of the 100-year committee. “The commitment to not forget the sacrifices of those heroes is always upon the shoulders of the conservators of the organization. So, by that obligation, the volunteers must not fail. We as veterans understand and enjoy the freedoms we have today.” The post celebrated its century mark with a formal ceremony on May 21. The event featured remarks from post commander Charles D. Shireman Sr., as well as a proclamation presented by Mayor Harold Kulman. Donegal High School student Ethan Steck performed the national anthem, and American Legion essay contest winner Myra Naqvi, also a Donegal High School student, was recognized. Proceeds from the event will benefit Create Columbia and will go toward beautification projects in the town. Hohenadel noted that the garden tour provides a chance to explore some little-seen areas of Columbia. “This is an opportunity to get into people’s backyards and see some hidden gems,” she remarked. “The art and music are added draws. We encourage people when they visit a garden to stop and talk to the artist and watch the artist at work. … It’s just an informal way to enjoy art and to enjoy the beauty of Columbia.” For more information on Art in the Gardens, search for “Create Columbia” on Facebook. Haunted Tour Auditions Set The cast needs at least one man of color ages 40 to 70 to play a historical hero from the 1860s. The role is small, but prominent, and will feature an interactive script performed with five other male cast members. This year’s theme is “Unfortunate Events,” and the tour will explore the tragedies that have befallen the town throughout history. The hourlong walking tour will balance historical narrative with entertainment. The Rivertowne Trolley will be included in the event once again. Tickets will go on sale on Sunday, Aug. 1. For audition details, advertising opportunities, or ticket sales, contact Sara Mimnall at 717-4494254 or Rebecca Wright at 717-517-2442.

Mueller purchases whole beans because he grinds the beans himself, but choices also include coarse for a French press or cold brew, medium-coarse ground, for pour-over or reusable pods, medium for classic drip coffee, and fine for espresso. Several shipping options are available as well. “We have had (client) family members pick it up at ODC,” said Mueller. He added that the coffee makes a great gift. “It has a really pleasant smooth taste,” he noted. ODC, located at 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, has been helping individuals with developmental disabilities gain the skills to do productive work for more than 70 years. Readers who would like to learn more about the center may visit www.odcenter.org or call 717397-4269. Before COVID-19, Timm was overseeing a business that provided walking tours of ethnic restaurants in the city. “They had to shut (the tours) down due to COVID-19 (restrictions),” recalled Mueller. “They decided to get into coffee roasting, and to partner with area nonprofits,” he added, noting that ODC was among the first nonprofits contacted by Wanderlust. Half a dozen ODC staff members taste-tested three coffee blends provided by Wanderlust. “We chose the one we wanted, and we chose the name,” said Mueller. Grounds for Success became Wanderlust’s ODC signature coffee. “The idea is that we get a blend that is exclusively ours, and we get 20% of the sales from it.” The tagline “It gets the job done.” was added to the name. According to Mueller, Grounds for Success comes in

The new nature preserve is important to its watershed’s resiliency and pollution-absorbing capacity and to the protection of Pennsylvania waterways and the Chesapeake Bay, according to DCNR secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. The Reist Nature Preserve also provides important natural habitat for birds, amphibians, reptiles, and other wildlife, and it contains nearly a mile of Counselman Run, a scenic and vital headwaters stream that cascades through the property into the Susquehanna River. The property’s scenic and steep sloped forests are home to stands of tulip poplar, maple, hemlock, and oak trees, with a lush understory ranging from ferns and ephemerals to mountain laurel.
