Columbia Students Climb To The Top Celebrating Eastern York’s Class Of 2021 BY CATHY MOLITORIS

or Columbia High School’s Class of 2021, Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” served as the perfect choice for class song, said class president Emma Grove. “We felt that the lyrics of this song represent the journey we’ve been through the last 13 years,” she said, speaking at the graduation ceremony on June 4. She added that the lyrics “I can almost see it, that dream I’m dreaming” spoke to her and her career goals, which include becoming a pediatric emergency physician. “Throughout high school, we have faced a lot of adversity,” she said. “But we are strong. We are from Columbia.”

F

Grove, one of 68 students who participated in the ceremony held in the school’s auditorium, also spoke about the importance of mental health. She quoted the song’s lyrics “The struggles I’m facing, the chances I’m taking, sometimes might knock me down, but no, I’m not breaking.” “I was knocked down a lot,” she said. “There were many nights I laid awake, crying, hoping I was good enough. Hoping I would be able to make it to the next mountain.” She said she often worried she would break before being diagnosed with depression and anxiety. “There is a stigma around mental health,” she told the audience. “I was worried I would be viewed as weak. … I am and always will be Emma Grove. A diagnosis does not define you. … The struggles we face do not define us.”

he Eastern York High School Class of 2021 graduated on June 8 at the school’s football stadium. Of the 154 graduates, Justin Ranker was named valedictorian and Taralyn Andes was named salutatorian. A baccalaureate service was held on June 7 at Christ United Methodist Church, Yorkana. To celebrate graduation, members of the Class of 2021 paid a visit to younger students in the district. “The seniors dressed in their graduation regalia and participated in an outside parade around the school buildings at

Eastern York Middle School, Canadochly Elementary, Kreutz Creek Elementary and Wrightsville Elementary,” said Terry Anne Doutrich, senior class adviser and commencement co-adviser. “It was an exciting time for the seniors to revisit their elementary schools and have an opportunity to have an impact on future generations.” Speakers at the graduation ceremony included Joseph Mancuso, superintendent of Eastern York School District, as well as high school principal Timothy Mitzel and school board president Jason Malone. Student speakers were Ranker, Andes and class president Nickolaus Dilley.

Thunder On The River CWM B

BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Inviting the public to the Thunder on the River car show are (from left) John Paxson, Jack Gamby, Grant Shultz, Todd Wolfe, Shawn Shufflebottom and Ed Lindenberger.

Hundreds of cars will storm downtown Columbia on Saturday, June 19, and they’ll bring the thunder. Thunder on the River, the annual Columbia Lions Club car show, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Locust Street between Front and Fifth streets. A minute-long engine revving by participants will be featured at noon, meant to simulate the sound of a thunderstorm sweeping across the river. The show is open to all makes and models of cars, trucks and motorcycles. While past events

INSIDE THIS ISSUE have drawn more than 500 vehicles, including 100 same-day registrants, organizers decided to limit the number of participants this year, mostly due to the uncertainty about when COVID-19 restrictions would be lifted. The show is sold-out for entrants. “Our No. 1 goal was to keep Thunder on the River going for our car owners,” said Paul Resch, vice president of the Lions and chairman of the car show committee. “Some have been coming to the show for 15 years and from as far away as Delaware and Maryland.”

Breanna Murphy, class valedictorian, said one line in particular from “The Climb” stood out to her: “Lost with no direction, my faith is shaking.” She noted that she lost her grandmother this past year and that she relied on her faith to get her through a tough year. “As we end the climb up one mountain, there will be another mountain to climb on the other side,” she stated. “No matter your plans - college, gap year, workforce or the military - we did this. We climbed the past 13 years to get on this stage.” Salutatorian Tanner Ness spoke about the uncertainty of the future and all of the unanswered questions in his life. “It is not the start or the end, but our journey through life that really matters,” he said. “Our

Dilley spoke of the importance of making your own decisions. He played baseball for three years at Eastern York and also participated in this year’s spring musical. He will attend Elon University to study psychology. Doutrich noted the accomplishments of the Class of 2021, adding that 42% of students will be going into four-year programs, 10% will be entering two-year programs and 6% will be joining the military. While last year’s graduation ceremony was very different due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year offered a chance for a return to normalcy for the seniors. “For the Class of 2021, with the CDC guidelines less restricted near the end of the school year, this year seniors (were) able to have a full-fledged outside graduation program,” Doutrich said.

In his speech, Ranker discussed how perseverance has helped him achieve his goals and shared that being unconventional can lead to great accomplishments. At Eastern York, he was a member of the varsity baseball team all four years. He plans to attend Lebanon Valley College to earn a degree in biology and also play for the school’s baseball team. Andes spoke about improving her “obsession of striving for perfection” and offered her take on the temporary aspects of success. At Eastern York, she was a member of the band, orchestra and choir. We should hold on to our memories, the good, the bad and the sad.” Superintendent Ashley Rizzo addressed the Class of 2021 and noted specific achievements of its members, including the boys’ basketball team’s section championship for the second year in a row. “You, the Class of 2021, rose above the challenges and persevered,” she said. Principal Robert Kedney reminded the class that the challenges of the past year only helped to make the students stronger. “You have overcome a tremendous amount of adversity to get to this point,” he stated. “Every experience in life is a chance for you to learn and grow.”

Between grief counseling, scholarships, and more, Angels of America’s Fallen supports the children all year, every year until adulthood. There will be two opportunities to attend the Bike-a-thon. The first Bike-a-thon will occur on Saturday, June 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. The second Bike-a-thon will take place on Sunday, June 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Cousler Park, 1060 Church Road, York. Both bike routes will be on walking trails, which are closed off to vehicular traffic. During the event, participants will ride for an hour to raise money. Anyone under the age of 18 can

The Lancaster County Youth Conservation School will take place on Monday to Friday, July 26 to 30. Open to students ages 14 to 16, this summer field school is made possible through a 43-year-old partnership between the Lancaster County Conservation District and local sportsmen’s clubs. The program focuses on outdoor activities and conservation of natural resources. This year, the school will be a hybrid of virtual and in-person learning. Students will gain knowledge about wildlife and conservation, leadership experience, and opportunities to hone their communication skills. Topics will include stream restoration, biodiversity, macroinvertebrates, forestry, canoeing, and wildlife management. Students will have opportunities to meet professionals in various environmental and conservation-related fields and discuss career options. The conservation school will also include a virtual visit with author Natalie Warren. A lifelong paddler and river enthusiast, Warren was one of the first two women to paddle from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay in 2011. Her new book is “Hudson Bay Bound.”
