memory to the Columbia Borough School District and developed by the Federal Government WPA program during the Depression years of the 1930s. Around 1960, the school district returned the ground to the Glatfelter Memorial Field Trust to maintain and operate, as the school district now had a new sporting facility at the new high school on Ironville Pike. Glatfelter Memorial Field is private property, so the board is taking steps to ensure that the facility will remain available for future generations to enjoy. Columbia Boys Athletic Association (CBAA) is the primary user of the fields, but over the years the site has been home to other sports and various events, including National Night Out, field days, church camps, carnivals, family reunions, food distributions, and a car show. The board wants the community to enjoy the facility, but asks that anyone interested in hosting any type of event or activity complete the necessary paperwork and scheduling. To make a reservation, contact the Glatfelter Memorial Field Trust board at its new email address, GlatfelterMemorialField@gmail .com.

As businesses seek to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, several resources are available to them. The U.S. Chamber has unveiled its Reopening Business Digital Resources Center to equip America’s business community with the latest state guidelines, sector-specific guidance, small business advice, and other tools and resources as businesses look to reopen safely and keep employees and customers healthy and informed. The resources center also includes a customizable workplace flyer to help businesses communicate the steps they are taking to keep people safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19 to employees and customers. To learn more, visit www.uschamber.com/reopening -business. Locally, the Lancaster Chamber and the Economic Development Company of Lancaster County collaborated to create a $33.4 million Lancaster County Economic Recovery Plan approved by the Board of Lancaster County Commissioners in May. A resource to support Lancaster County-based businesses has been developed and may be visited at www.recovery lancaster.com. The website is a resource to provide pathways to emergency funding, free personal protective equipment (PPE), pandemicrelated educational information, and advice. The goal is to help businesses operate safely and to fuel resolve to chart a new course forward. The site will be the main access point to both the $25 million Small Business Recovery & Sustainability Fund and $6

million in free PPE, the two key programs in phase one of the Economic Recovery Plan. Starting on June 8, county-based businesses with 100 or fewer employees can now register at the afore mentioned website for kits with PPE-related items including face masks, hand sanitizer and thermometers. The supply is significant and is intended to serve most of Lancaster County’s small businesses. The site’s grant application portal opened to Lancaster County-based businesses with 20 or fewer employees on June 15; it will remain open through 6:59 p.m. on Friday, June 19. Grants will not be awarded on a firstcome, first-served basis; individuals have through June 19 to submit applications. Once the application portal closes, the grant committee will begin evaluating all applications received. Those meeting the criteria and demonstrating the greatest need will be sent to the Lancaster County commissioners for approval, and recipients will be notified by email. The first phase of the funding program will offer grant opportunities totaling $10 million. In subsequent phases of the plan, the Recovery & Sustainability Fund is expected to offer an additional $15 million in grant awards to Lancaster Countybased businesses with 100 or fewer employees. Economic Recovery Plan funding comes from the $95 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act money that Lancaster County received from the federal government.

PennDOT Will Study Mayflies under-bridge lighting colors to be varied as part of the testing to determine its attractiveness to or deterrence of mayflies. Tests involve leaving the majority of lights turned off on the bridge, while three evenlyspaced groupings of lights, each consisting of four light fixtures, will remain on. The illuminated fixtures will have different colors or shades of light, and, for part of the testing, may be shielded to partially block the light in certain directions. Additionally, floodlight fixtures will be suspended from the edge of the bridge at select locations to shine light underneath the bridge. Independent researchers, as part of the broader team, will analyze the collected data and develop recommendations. The various testing stages will take place through Friday, June 26, and are weather dependent. Motorists may experience minor delays while the work is being performed. Pedestrians should use caution along the sidewalk when passing the contractor’s vehicle. Motorists are advised to slow down and use extra caution during the testing events for their own safety and for that of PennDOT’s workers. The public will be notified in advance of the testing. Message boards placed on each end of the bridge on the nights of testing will also alert motorists and pedestrians. Depending on

Workers will be on-site at various times during these nighttime tests to observe mayfly interaction with the lights, record light level readings, and take photographs. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced recently that a study is underway to investigate why mayflies are attracted to the above-deck lighting on the Route 462 Veterans Memorial (Columbia-Wrightsville) Bridge, which spans the Susquehanna River and connects the Borough of Columbia and West Hempfield Township in Lancaster County and the Borough of Wrightsville in York County. The goal of the study is to identify potential changes to the lighting that could be made in conjunction with a future bridge rehabilitation project. The bridge lighting was replaced in 2014 with historic reproduction lanterns. This had the unforeseen effect of attracting swarms of mayflies to the top of the bridge. As a result, bridge lighting is turned off during the annual mayfly season to avoid the swarming and the problems that have arisen from it. This study, in partnership with the local municipalities, aims to determine why mayflies are attracted to the bridge’s lights with the ultimate goal of devising a solution that may reduce the number of mayflies on the bridge. Potential solutions may include making minor changes to the lighting and/or adding lighting under the bridge. The City of Harrisburg is also a cooperative partner in the study by allowing the Market Street Bridge’s

CDJR Renews Status As Specialized Agriculture Truck Dealer Susquehanna Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (CDJR) of Wrightsville has renewed its commitment to the area farm community by retaining its designation as an official Ram Agriculture Dealership. The Ram Agriculture Dealership designation enables Susquehanna CDJR to be able to offer a specialized AgPack package to farmers that provides a return on their truck investment. The AgPack partner offerings are worth thousands of dollars to farm customers and lets the nearly 59,309 farms in Pennsylvania know the dealership understands the uniqueness of agriculture. Farmers who purchase a new Ram truck from Susquehanna CDJR can then access AgPack. Plus, all the benefits can be stacked on top of any manufacturer or dealer incentives currently being offered. To learn more about the exclusive offer only available through a Ram Agriculture Dealership, individuals may visit www.ramagdealer.com. To retain the elite dealer

group designation as a Ram Agriculture Dealership, Susquehanna CDJR is required to maintain a minimum of three team members who have successfully completed an agricultural training program created by farmers that has been peerreviewed for agricultural and educational correctness and carries several industry endorsements. Susquehanna CDJR also participates in continuing education that extends its knowledge of current topics that are important to Pennsylvania agriculture. Through ongoing education, combined with what the agriculture specialists learned through the Ag Awareness curriculum, the dealership seeks to be an educated partner with area agriculture by proactively anticipating and meeting the changing demands of its farm customers. To learn more about the program, call any of the Ram agricultural specialists at Susquehanna CDJR at 717-252-2412, stop by the dealership at 950 Hellam St., Wrightsville, or visit www.ramagdealer.com/ ram-agpack-promo.

approach, Northwest was ready to submit applications when the SBA’s loan portal reopened. According to Reitzes, nearly 100% of the PPP loan applications that Northwest received were approved by the SBA - a total of 3,700 loans that will provide more than $425 million worth of relief. Northwest’s efforts served employers of all sizes across a wide span of entities, including manufacturing, restaurants, religious organizations, professional services, beauty salons and contractors. These efforts helped protect more than 35,000 employees. Northwest Bancshares Inc. is the holding company of Northwest Bank. Northwest operates 206 full-service community banking offices and eight free standing drive-through facilities in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Indiana. “As soon as our portal opened, the company’s business bankers proactively reached out to clients to let them know that the bank was ready to take applications,” Reitzes said. “We provided checklists, a step-by-step video and FAQs to ensure they fully understood the relief program and requirements. We received applications from businesses of all sizes and industries across our entire four-state footprint.” Despite Northwest’s efforts, nationwide demand was much greater than expected. Funds were drained in just a few days after launch and the SBA stopped accepting applications. While many banks followed the SBA’s lead and stopped taking applications between the first and second rounds of government funding, Northwest took a different approach. In hopes that the PPP would be funded for a second round, the bank continued to help clients gather and prepare application information for submission. Because of this

Like banks across the country, Northwest Bank (NWBI), headquartered in Warren, has been working to help small businesses curb the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. As soon as the Small Business Administration (SBA) released guidance to banks on the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), Northwest teams assembled to analyze the details and develop an open, client-friendly approach to the application process, no matter a business’s industry or size. The company launched a number of ways to connect with clients and work with them to collect the necessary application information, according to Mark Reitzes, Northwest’s head of commercial banking. Clients applying through Northwest could either connect one-on-one with a business banker, who helped to gather the information required by the SBA, or submit their loan package through Northwest’s online application portal.
