New School Will Open In Columbia Philip Goropoulos, president CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health (CHI), is firm when discussing the beliefs of the organization’s board concerning the new St. John Neumann School for Children and Families that CHI is building on Locust Street in Columbia. “Everything we offer should be available to everybody,” said Goropoulos. “Every student will have every opportunity within the center. Nothing will cost extra. It will all be included.” The school, which will initially accommodate 60 children ranging in age from six weeks to 5 years old, will embody a new perspecive on

care. “Our family-focused approach to child care revamps the traditional model,” said Goropoulos, who noted the goal will be not just preparing children for school, but helping get them ready for life by making health and wellness part of the curriculum. Special benefits at the school that will be offered to all students and families will include a family wellness coach and a family wellness caseworker. Carol Johnston, family wellness coach, will meet with every family that comes into the center. “(Johnston) will help families learn to work within the community and with one another,” said Goropoulos, who added that every family will have an assessment. “We will evaluate how the child is doing, what family dynamics look like, and areas of potential improvement, challenges they might be facing, and strategies (they could utilize),” said Goropoulos, who added that families will have access to these services as long as they are enrolled.

COBYS Celebrates 40 Years Of Service When COBYS Family Services held its 40th anniversary banquet celebration at Middle Creek Church of the Brethren on March 12, most of the presentations were made by video. “We didn’t do that because of COVID19,” said Anne Stokes, director of

development for COBYS, who was the program’s master of ceremonies with executive director Mark Cunningham. “It was just an easier way to do them.” One of the video appearances was made by Glen Faus of Manheim, who served as director of COBYS from 1980 to 2001. Faus was in the audience at the event.

COBYS Family Services celebrated 40 years in the Lancaster area at a banquet on March 12. The numbers being held up represent the more than 60,000 unique points of service COBYS has provided over four decades to children, adults, and families in the area.

Also honored at the banquet were Dennis and Ann Saylor of Manheim, who, as resource parents for COBYS, have provided foster care for 116 children over more than three decades. Stokes noted that the large gathering included close to 600 meals at two separate seatings. “We do a meal at noon and the same thing in the evening,” said Stokes. COBYS was founded in 1980 by the Atlantic Northeast District of the Church of the Brethren, with one caseworker and one executive director placing teenagers in foster homes. In its 40-year history, the organization has served more than 60,000 people in a variety of settings. Recalling that in the past COBYS provided congregant care, Stokes stated that the organization once owned a See COBYS pg 4

Lancaster Farm Sanctuary Moves To Mount Joy By Francine Fulton

In order to better accommodate its current group of rescued cows, sheep, goats, pigs and other farmed animals, as well as to provide space for even more animals in need, the Lancaster Farm Sanctuary recently relocated to a larger facility. The nonprofit sanctuary, founded in the summer of 2017 by Sarah Salluzzo and Jonina Turzi, was previously located at 558 Milton Grove Road South in Elizabethtown. The sanctuary’s new address is 1871 Milton Grove Road, Mount Joy. Although the new location is only 2 miles away from the previous farm, the new property has much more pasture space. “The previous farm was about 5 acres but only 3 was habitable, because there was a creek and wetlands,” explained board

member Sara Petrosky. “The new farm is almost 18 acres, and almost all of it is pasture.” The biggest benefit of the new location is that the sanctuary will

If necessary, the family could be referred to a family wellness caseworker, who will act as a resource. The idea for a school grew out of the Healthy Columbia Project CHI engaged in more than two years ago. “We used to do small grant making to organizations that were working with children in addition to our dental program,” said Goropoulos, who noted that the board was looking for ways do more for children. “(They wanted) a strategy that would transform how communities were responding to health and developing health care habits,” he recalled. 4 - MERCHANDISER - Columbia/Hellam/Wrightsville Edition - June 24, 2020

“We have people asking almost daily, ‘Can you take in this animal?’ A lot of times the requests are by the police. We also get calls from good Samaritans or neighbors,” Petrosky noted. “(The new location) will enable us to take in a lot more animals so we don’t have to say no so often.” She noted that when an animal first comes to the farm, it is examined by a veterinarian before it is allowed to have contact with the other animals. Animals that cannot be accommodated are referred to

partnering sanctuary organizations. One of the site’s newest resident is Orville, a small lamb, who suffers from a bone infection and is currently on medication. “He couldn’t keep up with the other lambs, and someone brought him to the farm,” Petrosky explained. “We do the ‘Great Orville Watch’ where volunteers sit with him in two-hour segments.” Other residents of the farm include two pigs, Willa and Charlotte, who were found by humane police officers locked in a small shed; two dairy cows named Bess

and Truehart; and even a chicken that fell off a truck and was left abandoned. “We have about 50 animals now, including chickens, goats, cows, sheep and ducks, two turkeys and different kinds of pigs,” Petrosky stated. “We know their names and their personalities; they are just like kids.” Volunteers work at the farm in shifts to take care of the animals, which includes feeding them and performing maintenance and cleaning chores. Volunteers also spend time building relationships with the animals since the sanctuary is the animals’ forever home. “We are not like other rescues where they are looking for homes for the animals,” Petrosky pointed out. “In our case, they all come to live here for the rest of their lives.” The sanctuary is an all-volunteer organization, and it relies on community donations to pay for veterinarians’ services, food for the animals, bedding and ongoing care. Additionally, the sanctuary recently launched a capital campaign to finance the

construction of a new barn and fencing at the site, which will cost approximately $120,000. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, tours of the site were offered every Saturday from May through October. “Since the isolation started in mid-March, we have been doing virtual tours that have been widely viewed,” Petrosky said. “We also have bedtime stories with the animals on Thursday and Sunday nights at 7:30 p.m., where we read children’s books to our baby goats and sheep.” The farm also offered a yoga program that included a one-hour class followed by a 30-minute walking tour of the sanctuary. This program is also currently being offered virtually. To view the offerings, readers may visit www.facebook.com/lancasterfarmsanctuary and choose Videos. It is projected that the tours and yoga will resume when the Lancaster County goes to the green status. For more information about Lancaster Farm Sanctuary or to donate to its capital campaign, readers may visit www.lancaster farmsanctuary.org.

Yoga and tours of the Lancaster Farm Sanctuary will resume at the site’s new location in Mount Joy when Lancaster County moves into the green phase. The programs are currently being offered virtually on the site’s Facebook page.

house on the grounds of Pleasant View Retirement Community in Manheim. Most recently, the building, which has been razed, was used as a home for teen mothers and their children. “As the model of best practices changed over time, so did we,” said Stokes. “There was an evolution of types of clients we could handle.” Currently, COBYS provides foster care through two units. “One is the permanency unit, which is a direct contract with Lancaster County Children and Youth Services,” said Stokes. “(That group) functions as an extension of the county caseworkers.” The permanency unit has a capacity of 80 to 100 children in care depending on the number of families available. “We also have COBYS foster care resource parents that we train,” said Stokes, who noted that about 80 to 100 children may be placed with those families. Stokes explained that about 100 families are approved, but all those families may not be available to take children due to specifications in the number of children they can accept and their ages. “We are full most of the time, so we are always approving new resource parents,” Stokes added. Stokes noted that while many things remain the same about the care provided to children, there have also been many changes. “We (better) understand the role trauma plays in life and how you care for foster children and how we do therapy,” she said. The number of therapists serving COBYS clients has tripled since 2011. “It is best practice to offer trauma training,” she added. Another change has been the types of parenting classes the organization holds. “One-onone interaction and care in a loving home

Glen Faus, who served as director of COBYS for more than 20 years, was honored at the event. has not changed, (though),” she said. According to Stokes, the dedication of the in-office staff at COBYS has remained constant as well. “There’s also a lot about the way we deliver care that hasn’t changed,” she said. “We started as a small agency with a small staff,” Stokes recalled. “We have always been focused on the one child in front of (each caseworker) … the one case … that one family and how (staff members) provide focused care for each of (those cases).” Stokes said that this focus has remained the same even though the number of families COBYS serves has grown. “We have maintained with all of our workers (the goal to always) provide that quality of care,” she said. Cunningham summed up the service COBYS has provided for four decades, saying, “For 40 years, our mission and guidance by Christian faith remains the same, but has been strengthened. Our level of care is the same, but renewed through deeper understanding and resources.” Readers who would like to know more about COBYS may visit www.cobys.org.

food access, early childhood education, and access to health and health care. “These are the four components to impact a community … to put that community in a better position to be healthy and thrive,” said Goropoulos. In response to what the board members learned, CHI decided to build a school. “It’s a seven- to 10-year investment to build these structures and programs, and then they become supported by the community,” said Goropoulos, who noted that first discussion of the project dates back to December 2017. The project was approved in 2018, and the organization then purchased the building at 401 Locust St., along with the adjacent parking lot at 403 Locust. CHI broke ground for the school in May 2019. “We gutted the second and third floors of the existing building and added 10,000 square feet to both floors over the top of the parking lot,” said Goropoulos. COVID-19 restrictions halted construction in March. “We were a few weeks away from the building being finished when they shut down,” said Goropoulos, who noted that despite the shutdown, the school was due to be completed at the end of June and is now slated to open in early November. The organization is working hard to meet new guidelines while offering high value to participating families. “If we can support family functioning to reduce the possibility of adverse childhood experiences, the savings to the community and the positive health results to children will be astronomical,” said Goropoulos. Readers who want to learn more about CHI and the new school in Columbia may visit https://stjosephchildrenshealth.org.
