Cruisin’ For Cats By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“We were about nine months into our first year when everything changed,” said Tammy Loughlin, executive director of Columbia Animal Shelter, which officially opened to the public on June 1, 2019. Until the stay-at-home order was announced in March 2020, business had been booming at the private shelter that specializes in felines. “Our vision is to help manage the overpopulation of cats in Columbia,” Loughlin said, adding that only residents of the borough may surrender domesticated cats for rehoming, but anyone may adopt from the shelter. “We have a lot of adopters coming in from far away,”
Loughlin said. “We’re excited about the reach we’re starting to get. If ever the shelter is empty, we’ve done our job.” The shelter took in about 300 cats in 2019 and is on track to more than double that number in 2020, Loughlin related. And that is with a three-month shutdown. “We were completely full with a waiting list when (the pandemic) hit,” Loughlin said. The Columbia Animal Shelter is located in the old Vigilant Fire Hall, 265 S. 10th St., Columbia. The 8,000-square-foot facility has a small area for dogs and capacity for 120 cats. While the stay-at-home order was in place, staff members took care of the animals that were living in the shelter. Once in the yellow phase, intakes and adoptions were handled via appointment. The shelter reopened its low-cost spay/neuter clinic that had been offered every Monday since June 2019, and it
is in the process of restarting the trap/neuter/release (TNR) program. Loughlin noted that the TNR program had just begun when the shutdown was announced, and only two procedures had been performed. “We have a working barn cat program,” Loughlin shared. “We work with a lot of farms in the area (that take feral cats that may need to be relocated).” The late Judy McKonly donated funds to build the Columbia Animal Shelter, but donations, grants, and fundraisers will keep it operating successfully. The Cruisin’ for Cats car show was introduced last year as a signature fundraising event. It drew 50-some cars, which Loughlin described as “not a bad first start.” She is expecting a much larger turnout for the second annual Cruisin’ for Cats car show, which will be held at the shelter on Saturday, Aug. 1,
Checking In With KPETS By Dayna M. Reidenouer
CWM
“Prior to COVID-19, we couldn’t keep up with the demand for our services,” commented Karen Gerth, founder and executive adviser of Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS). “Many of our volunteers seem to find a population or type of visit that they enjoy and that is a good fit for their pets so they may focus in that area.” Gerth reported that KPETS currently has 443 registered human volunteers and 476 registered animals, as some of the volunteers have multiple pets that work with them. The teams provide more than 10,000 hours of visitation every year in communities throughout southcentral Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. “More and more facilities, agencies, and organizations are becoming aware of the benefits of the human/animal interaction, and KPETS is a way to implement that benefit,” Gerth remarked. See KPETS pg 4
Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS) sent collages and cards to clients, students, and staff members of local health care institutions to provide encouragement during the shutdown.
The first Cruisin’ for Cats car show to benefit the Columbia Animal Shelter drew about 50 vehicles last year. Organizers hope to surpass that number at the second annual Cruisin’ for Cats, set for Aug. 1. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. has been set as the rain date. The shelter facility has a large area for parking and a lawn with a stage, so it is ideal for hosting events like car shows and the Shelter in Place summer concert series that has been held on Saturday evenings this summer. Vehicles entered
in the car show may arrive as early as 8 a.m. and will be spaced apart to promote social distancing. There is a cost to enter the show, with a discount for those who preregister at the shelter or by finding “Cruisin’ for Cats Car Show” at www.eventbrite.com. Spectators will be admitted free of charge. Pets on leashes will be welcome to accompany See Car Show pg 4
Lancaster Chef Garners Gold With Regional Team By Ann Mead Ash
Susan Notter of Lancaster, a pastry chef, is one of eight professionals, all from the East Coast of the United States, who participated as a regional team in the Culinary Olympics held in Stuttgart, Germany, from Feb. 14 to 19. The event is an international culinary competition held every four years. The Olympics drew 1,800 chefs from nearly 70 countries. The group with which Notter participated won a gold medal for its display program and placed third overall in the regional team category, taking home a bronze medal. Notter, who has made her home in Lancaster for a decade, has been participating in culinary competitions since 1979.
Along the way, she has placed first in prestigious competitions such as the Southern Pastry Classic in Atlanta in 2003. More recently, she earned gold as a member of a U.S. team that competed in the Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany, in 2016. Growing up in Cheshire, England, Notter often created sweet treats for her three younger sisters. “My parents didn’t buy boxed cookies and cakes,” recalled Notter. “ When we wanted something sweet to eat, I had to make it.” Notter soon discovered that she enjoyed baking cakes and organizing See Lancaster Chef pg 3

Motorcycle Ministry To Offer Coffee Break By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The Saddlebag Riders TEAM of Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries has hosted an annual biker breakfast during each of the past three summers. The fourth annual event will be held on Saturday, July 25, from 7 to 11 a.m. at Washington Boro Park, 2010 River Road, Washington Boro, but it will look somewhat different than in previous years. Saddlebag Riders member John Young noted that because of precautions against the novel coronavirus, the group has opted to offer doughnuts, coffee, and bottled water instead of a full breakfast. There will be no charge for the refreshments, but donations will be accepted for the Wounded Warrior Project. Saddlebag Riders TEAM members will be available to offer bike blessings and to pray with anyone who asks. The event is open to everyone, not just motorcyclists. For safety, people should wear masks while stopping at the park. According to the order issued by Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Rachel Levine, masks covering the mouth and nose are required to be worn when people are outdoors and unable to consistently maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from people who are not part of an individual’s household. had talent, and she became his assistant. “We taught people to work with sugar in a way that was very learnable,” said Notter. The pair began competing and teaching in other countries, eventually relocating to the U.S. in 1992. After working for Albert Uster Imports as corporate pastry chef, Notter took a job in Baltimore and found a house just over the Pennsylvania border in New Freedom around 2008. She worked in a variety of positions, including as director of the pastry arts program for YTI Lancaster. She is now employed as a distribution partner with Max Felchlin AG as a U.S. sales professional. For the Culinary Olympics in Germany, the team was required to create a fivecourse menu, four different finger foods, three appetizer plates, four plated desserts, and four petit fours. Notter was responsible for the desserts and the petit fours. Notter noted that the competition was steep. “The national teams from Norway, Sweden, and Finland really dominated,” said Notter, who lauded the team from Switzerland as well. “They’re very innovative.” Notter said that in addition to the competitions, she especially enjoys working for Max Felchlin AG, which is a family business
The Saddlebag Riders TEAM of Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries will host a coffee break on July 25 at Washington Boro Park. Donations will be accepted for the Wounded Warrior Project. Jesus Ministry is to enjoy the sport of motorcycling and to share God’s love by assisting fellow motorcyclists with their personal and spiritual needs. The Saddlebag Riders have adopted Matthew 28:19 as the TEAM’s theme verse. Also known as the Great Commission, the verse relates the words of Jesus Christ when He charged His followers to make disciples. TEAM stands
for “Telling Everyone About Messiah.” A chicken barbecue event is being planned for later this year. Young said the date and location will be announced once the plans are finalized. birthday parties. Following high school, she worked for a year in a hotel before attending culinary school in Leicester, England, where she earned a degree in hospitality management. Knowing she wanted to specialize in pastries, Notter worked evenings and weekends for a small bakery in Melton Mowbray that focused on European-style pastries. At the age of 19, Notter completed culinary school and moved to Germany to work full time in the pastry field. She was employed by a large bakery that distributed products to 10 of its own pastry stores. For more than two years, Notter moved between departments, learning how to make decorative items, layered cakes, and tortes. At the same time, she learned to speak German. “People were friendly and welcoming. It was a wonderful experience,” said Notter. From there, Notter moved to Luzerne, Switzerland, to work in chocolate. She created bonbons, bars, and other confectionary treats for four months on a work visa. In 1983, she transferred to Zurich, where she began taking evening classes to learn to work with sugar. The teacher saw that she

KPETS teams bring cheer to residents of retirement communities, provide a comforting distraction to cancer patients and other hospitalized individuals, encourage adults and children in all different types of therapy sessions, and support reluctant learners and struggling readers. “Visiting schools can be anything from reading programs to working with life skills or multiple disability classes. The pet can motivate or calm in ways that amaze the staff (members), Gerth said. “We’ve heard over and over again about residents in health care or hospice settings who finally smile or even communicate when the therapy pet is with them. With the stay-at-home orders suspending
in-person visits, KPETS volunteers utilized social media and other communication technologies to stay in touch with their clients. Some teams recorded themselves reading stories with their pets, while others encouraged children to read to their own animals. Virtual meetings were held with hospital and school staff members to know they are being thought of. One team created a video featuring a day in the life of a therapy dog under quarantine for a life skills class. The students were curious to see how therapy dogs were being affected by the situation, Gerth said. Teams also made a special video for the Class of 2020 at Warwick High School. “We had a very special bond with this class two years ago when they lost three students within a few weeks, Gerth said. “We wanted to wish them well, congratulate them, and let them know how proud we are
of them and how honored we were to be a part of their lives during that most sad time. With Pennsylvania beginning to reopen, KPETS is also considering how to begin to make visits again. Gerth asserted that guidelines will be in place to ensure the safety of the clients, volunteers, and pets. Any facility or organization that would like to host a KPETS team visit for the benefit of its staff members, clients, or students may submit a request at www.kpets.org. For insurance purposes and the safety and protection of all involved, visits cannot be in a private setting unless a third-party professional is present. KPETS welcomes additional volunteers, as the demand for its services is great. Interested individuals may apply on the aforementioned website. Also, individuals and organizations may partner with KPETS to ensure its continued operation.

sent to the Lancaster County commissioners for approval, and recipients will be notified by email. This round of funding follows phase one, which awarded a total of $10.4 million to 423 companies earlier in July. In addition to funding, businesses with 100 or fewer employees can register for a free COVID-19 supply kit, gain public health information, and subscribe to a newsletter for email updates on the aforementioned website. Economic Recovery Plan funding comes from the $95 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act money that Lancaster County received from the federal government. This funding will be used to help to provide a positive path forward for the local economy, which is fueled in part by more than 12,000 businesses with 100 or fewer employees.

The Lancaster Chamber and the Economic Development Company of Lancaster County have announced the second phase of funding to support Lancaster Countybased businesses on the path to reopening and recovery after months of economic shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding criteria and the application portal, which opened on July 20, are available at https://recoverylancaster.com. The website is the primary resource for grant funding, personal protective equipment (PPE), public health issues, data analysis, and other information related to the $33.4 million Lancaster County Economic Recovery Plan approved by the Board of Lancaster County Commissioners in May. Phase two of the Recovery and Sustainability Fund offers $15 million in grant awards to Lancaster County-based businesses with 100 or fewer employees. The grant portal opened for applications at 8 a.m. on July 20 and will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 24. Phase two of funding will offer two sets of criteria, one for businesses with 20 or fewer employees and one for businesses with up to 100 employees. Businesses that previously applied and did not qualify are encouraged to review the new criteria. Grants will not be awarded on a firstcome, first-served basis; individuals have five days to submit applications. Businesses are also encouraged to review the criteria for submissions on the aforementioned website prior to July 20. Once the application portal closes, the grant committee will begin evaluating all applications received. Those meeting the criteria and demonstrating the greatest need will be
