Columbia Summer Bucket List Offers Fun Activities For All
The 2020 Columbia Summer Bucket List provides suggestions of more than 35 activities highlighting various Columbia organizations, businesses, and landmarks, such as Wright’s Ferry Mansion (left photo) and the Columbia Market House (right photo).
Susquehanna National Heritage Area in partnership with the Borough of Columbia’s Parks and Recreation Committee has launched a 2020 Columbia Summer Bucket List. The list provides residents and visitors with suggestions of more than 35 activities featuring Columbia organizations, businesses and landmarks. The Columbia Summer Bucket List focuses on free and low-cost activities that are readily available and safe during the pandemic. Participants may discover new parts of town, view murals, and engage in silly activities. For example, the list encourages people to make a train noise at the Columbia & Reading Railroad Car at Manor and Fourth streets. Participants may also dive into Columbia’s history by visiting historic sites and markers like the Lincoln Highway marker on Chestnut Street and Zion Hill Cemetery. See Summer Bucket List pg 3
UDS Service Dogs Program Plans First Golf Outing Working To Grant Wishes
UDS Service Dogs (from left) Gibson, Henry, and Kirby were matched with clients in June and have begun team training in preparation for providing assistance to people with physical or intellectual disabilities. The organization will host its first golf outing on Aug. 28 at Meadia Heights Golf Club to raise funds to support the program.
Landis Communities offered pointers in planning the event. Volunteers met with representatives of golf courses around Lancaster County to see who would want to partner with UDS Service Dogs, and Meadia Heights was the most eager. The Aug. 28 date was scheduled in August 2019. Breece said that when the shutdown occurred, she was afraid that the outing might have to be postponed or canceled, but final planning for the event is going strong. On Aug. 28, golfers may check in beginning at 8 a.m. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and will take a scramble format. Refreshments will be provided. A barbecue buffet is set for 2 p.m. Opportunities to win gift baskets will be available. Additionally, UDS clients and See UDS Service Dogs pg 4
Virtual Convoy Scheduled For Aug. 16 By Ann Mead Ash
In April, COVID-19 restrictions put Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases, in a precarious position. Concern for the children served by Make-A-Wish, who fall into high-risk categories, was of the utmost importance. Wishes were postponed, and the popular Mother’s Day Convoy, which was ready to make a move to the Manheim Auto Auction, was postponed. The convoy is now scheduled as a virtual event to be held on Sunday, Aug. 16. In the meantime, Make-A-Wish
needed to raise funds, preparing to grant more than 450 local wishes when the organization is able. To make those wishes come true, the organization embarked on a virtual giving week, held from April 22 to 29. Area residents responded positively to the effort, and by mid-May nearly $100,000 had been raised mainly by 18 teams and 66 participants. Dennis Heron, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, said that the organization was “blown away” by the support. “On behalf of the children and families we serve, we thank everyone who donated for their dedication to the MakeA-Wish mission, especially during these challenging See Make-A-Wish pg 2

UDS Service Dogs will host its first golf outing on Friday, Aug. 28, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Program manager Lori Breece
hopes it will become an annual event. “We have been trying to find a signature event that can bring in strong revenue for our program and get the community engaged,” Breece remarked.

On May 9, Make-A-Wish announced that the decision to turn the convoy into a virtual event had been made by staff and volunteer convoy planning committee members, and that the August date had been set. The decision was based on concern for the Make-A-Wish children and the members of the community who visit the event. No carnival will be held; however, a modified small truck convoy featuring the top 30 drivers and key sponsors will leave the auto auction during the day. The convoy will be broadcast live from the Make-A-Wish Facebook page. In addition, organizers are working to create other ways to share parts of the traditional convoy festivities, such as the food, clowns, and carnival games. Readers who would like to know

more about the convoy may search for “Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Convoy” on Facebook or visit www.wishconvoy.org. “Our convoy planning committee and volunteers are already hard at work identifying ways to make this virtual convoy an amazing event for our community, our supporters, and especially our Wish families,” said Terry Finch, one of the chairs of the convoy. “Drivers are continuing to raise funds through the new convoy date, and we’re excited about the fun new activities and technology we can use to create a successful virtual event.” In addition to postponing the convoy, the chapter has had to cancel or postpone many other in-person events that raise pivotal funds for wish-granting efforts. Make-A-Wish counts on the local community, especially truck drivers to make the rescheduled virtual convoy a success. Funds raised by the convoy have supported more than 75% of wishes granted to area children each year. Make-A-Wish hopes that area residents will continue to support the organization during this critical time because the longer the COVID-19 safety precautions are in place, the larger the number of local children waiting for wishes will continue to grow. Community support is vital as the organization looks to safely grant wishes involving travel or large gatherings. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley first began granting wishes in 1986. The Make-A-Wish organization grants a wish to a critically ill child approximately every 34 minutes. “Picnic Passport Pack” Fundraiser Announced Susquehanna National Heritage Area has announced a fundraising effort, which will be held in place of the Summer Soirée, a River Experience. The organization decided that a gathering with the continued uncertainty of COVID-19 was not feasible. For a donation of $50 or more, donors will receive a Picnic Passport Pack, which includes a picnic blanket provided by Donegal Insurance Group and a picnic guide featuring prime picnic locations along the Susquehanna River in York and Lancaster counties. The guide will also include short features on area restaurants where
picnic meals may be picked up. These restaurants are ones that have supported Susquehanna National Heritage Area in previous River Experiences. Donors will be asked to pick up the blankets at either Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, or the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. The campaign will run from Saturday, Aug. 1, to Wednesday, Sept. 30. For more information, readers may visit www.susquehanna heritage.org, call 717-252-0229 or email info@susquehanna heritage.org.
CCWA Creek Stomp Moves To Mount Joy By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance (CCWA) has held a creek stomp in Rife Run at Mummau Park in Manheim for at least five years. This year’s waterway exploration event, however, will be held at Little Chiques Park, 229 Park Ave., Mount Joy. The event will take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, as part of the Lancaster Conservancy Water Week. The event was moved in order to
reach out to a different audience, said CCWA president Steve Gergely. The move will also expose previous creek stomp participants to a different tributary of Chiques Creek - the Little Chiques. According to www.chiquescreekwatershed.org, Chiques Creek flows 31 miles from its source in Lebanon County to the Susquehanna River near Marietta. Along the way, it collects water and organisms from Rife Run, Little Chiques Creek, and other creeks and streams. See CCWA pg 4

UDS Service Dogs from pg 1 their working service dogs, as well as puppies in training, are slated to attend. Breece hopes that the program’s newest dog - a Doberman pinscher - will have arrived by then and can be introduced at the outing. This will be the first Doberman to go through the UDS Service Dogs program, although Breece has had a pet Doberman for six years. The program’s primary breed is the Labrador retriever, but because Dobermans are tall, they are better suited to providing stability when adults move from sitting to standing and vice versa. Breece had initially hoped to make $50,000 from the golf outing, but revenue expectations have been cut by half. “Any success will be a positive success because it’s new for us,” she said. The proceeds will be used to purchase more puppies for the program and cover
veterinary costs, which can reach $2,000 per animal. With about 12 new puppies every year, UDS Service Dogs has vet bills for 25 dogs a year. Breece noted that in total, the program invests $25,000 in each dog. Clients are charged just $5,000. “We haven’t raised prices in 15 years,” Breece said. Breece is excited about the evolution the program has undergone in recent years. She credited the change to the implementation of a better business plan and processes four years ago. “We had to commit to bringing in more puppies (to be trained),” Breece said. “Now we’re placing six to nine dogs a year. We have eight staff members and 30 puppies in different stages of training. That’s a lot of growth.” Only a portion of the dogs that go through the training process provide mobility assistance. The others go to work as facility dogs or become pets. Several
UDS Service Dogs interact with children in schools and with clients in a counseling office near Philadelphia. Breece would like to increase the services the dogs provide. Currently, staff members are taking classes to become certified to work with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and train dogs to assist them, and child advocacy centers are on the waiting list for support canines. “I can’t wait to do it because I know it’ll help these children who have been through so much,” Breece commented. “I know how dogs are already helping in schools. The centers will partner each dog with a child, and the dog will be with them as they move through the court system.” Anyone who would like to support UDS Service Dogs by sponsoring the golf outing may contact Breece at 717715-8753 or lorib@udservices.org by Saturday, Aug. 1, and golfers may register to play in the outing at www.udservices.org/golf through Friday, Aug. 14.
CCWA from pg 2 The health of a tributary impacts that of the Chiques Creek and, by extension, the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. It also affects the people and wildlife living around the tributary. “Everyone benefits from cleaner waterways,” Gergely commented, adding that groundwater is affected by stream health too. “It’s important that we provide education to the public and bring awareness to what individuals can do.” The creek stomp is one of the educational events the CCWA offers to the public. Gergely noted that the organization typically hosts a watershed expo during Water Week when it is held in June. This year, however, Water Week was postponed, and the expo was canceled because it draws crowds of up to 600 people. The CCWA opted to hold its annual creek stomp during the rescheduled Water Week. During the creek stomp, Lancaster County Conservation District representatives will give a presentation, then distribute nets and buckets and lead attendees into the Little Chiques. There, participants may see what they can find in the water, scooping critters with nets and putting them in buckets for examination on shore. The experts will discuss the findings and what they mean to the health of the creek before returning the critters to the water. “It’s a great family event,” Gergely said. “It’s a good way for everybody to get a hands-on experience of what they find in our local waterways.” Additionally, a tour of the wildflower meadow in the park will be offered.
The 2019 Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance creek stomp was held in Rife Run in Manheim. This year’s event will be held in Little Chiques Park in Mount Joy on Aug. 12. People of all ages are welcome to participate in the creek stomp, and the CCWA has been working with Mount Joy Borough to identify safe access points to the creek. There is no cost to participate, but registration is required because attendance will be limited for safety. The event will be held rain or shine. Attendees should wear old shoes and clothing that may get wet, and they should bring masks and drinking water. Hand sanitizer will be provided. For more information about the CCWA and the creek stomp, as well as to register, readers may visit www.chiquescreek watershed.org.

The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC) board of directors voted to reschedule all remaining 2020 events until 2021 after careful consideration due to COVID-19 cases increasing across the state and country. The Bridge Bust was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3. Vendors from all over the country participate. Historically, this event attracts an estimated 30,000 visitors to the area. Currently, outside events are
limited to 250 people in attendance while social distancing per Gov. Wolf’s amended emergency order. The Missy Glenn Memorial River Run 5K was originally rescheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14, and now will be postponed until 2021. The Chamber has been unable to acquire highway permits from PennDOT in order to use the Veterans Memorial Bridge for both events. In response to these postponed events, the SVCC will host its first-ever virtual mar-
ketplace from Saturday, Aug. 1, through Saturday, Aug. 29, to support businesses, restaurants, dealers, vendors, and artists while supporting SVCC. A portion of all sales will be donated to the SVCC. Vendors can join the marketplace by visiting https://visitsusquehanna valley.com/events. Starting on Aug.1, interested shoppers may visit https://svmarketplace.shop to access the marketplace and begin shopping.
