Celebrating 75 Years Of Service BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Since 1947, Lake Clarke Rescue has provided water rescue and response from its base along the Susquehanna River in Wrightsville. Now the nonprofit wants to share its mission with the community. Lake Clarke Rescue will hold a 75th anniversary celebration on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at
1838 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. “We’ll have some of our rescue equipment out for people to explore,” said Maxine Taglieri, treasurer. “We’ll have games for kids at no cost. We’ll have a bouncy house, a dunk tank, face painting and chances for kids to guess how much candy is in a jar and win it.” Hot dogs and other food will be available for purchase. See Service pg 3

or a chance to see some unique vehicles and support the theater department at Columbia High School, make plans to attend Driving For Drama. The car show will be held at the school, 901 Ironville Pike, on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, Aug. 14. “The idea for this show came up a couple of years ago when the theater department was looking for fundraising ideas for the booster club,” said Dave Kinser, who owns South 16th Street Garage in Columbia and is one of the event organizers. “We’re all car guys, and we’ve been involved in car shows, so it was a natural fit.” Joining Kinser in spearheading the event are James “Boomer” Weaver and Tim Pentz.
Kinser has been involved in the theater program at Columbia High School for years. His three sons all participated in the program, and he has been set director for 26 shows. “Proceeds from the car show will be used for upgrades to equipment and to help with overall operating expenses of the theater program,” he explained. Columbia High School’s program presents a fall play and a spring musical annually. The car show will be held in the west parking lot, near the football field. Spectators are asked to park in the east parking lot closest to Kinderhook Road. Registration for cars will be available on the day of the show, but preregistration is offered for a discount. Admission for spectators is free. For more information, including weather updates, search for “Driving For Drama Benefit Car Show” on Facebook. To register for the car show, call 717-684-3600.

was a huge success. We had an excellent turnout.” As the name implies, all carnival games will be just a penny, Miller explained. “We are going to have a penny pitch for kids, featuring plastic items, and the only game that will be more than a penny is our dime pitch for adults, featuring glassware,” she noted. Kids will receive a participation prize at every game station and will be able to win tickets, which can be turned in for bigger prizes at a prize table, she said. The congregation holds fundraisers throughout the year to be able to host the event, including selling peanut butter and coconut cream eggs at Easter and having a yard sale, Miller remarked. “We invite everybody to come out and socialize, have fun and enjoy an evening where you don’t have to spend a lot of money,” she said. “It’s just a fun time for the community.” Water’s Edge United Methodist Church holds worship services on Sundays at 8:30 a.m., followed by Sunday school for children and adults at 9:45 a.m. For more information, search for “Water’s Edge United Methodist Church” on Facebook or call 717-246-2428.

“This is an opportunity for people to enjoy fun, inexpensive entertainment,” said Lisa Miller, outreach coordinator for the church. “It allows us to share our love of Jesus with the community.” The event will feature a variety of food trucks, including The Kilted Griller, Maine Course Mobile, Taco Bus, TGB’s Soup Bar, The Donut Guys, Premium Shaved Ice and ice cream from the East Prospect Lions Club. Games and prizes for children of all ages will be spotlighted. Glorify will entertain with live music during the event. “They are a Christian contemporary band,” Miller explained. She noted that last year’s inaugural event was held as an opportunity to connect with the community after isolation due to the pandemic. “We wanted to give everybody a chance to get out and be together,” she stated. “We were hoping it would be a way we could reach out to the community and offer something fun and cheap to do. hospitals provide over $3 billion in charitable care annually for patients in need. The mini golf event will also be held in association with PlayYellow, another Children’s Miracle Network program. PlayYellow has a similar goal as Extra Life, but it consists of golfers around the country who wish to support the cause. Participants include PGA Tour professionals, amateur golfers, tournaments and golf manufacturers; the only requirement for participation is a desire to contribute to children’s hospitals and treatment nationally.
Chobanoff has big plans for next year and hopes to return to Leisure Lanes for a second fundraiser. “I want to do something on a larger scale,” he said. “I’m already looking into sponsors and food trucks to support the event.” Twelve holes have already been sponsored and a giveaway drawing will be available to participants. A member family of the Children’s Miracle Network will also speak at the tournament. To register or become a sponsor, email Chobanoff at padave78@gmail.com or visit https://bit.ly/CMNP4M22.

We’re always on call, 24 hours a day.” Lake Clarke Rescue provides services on the Susquehanna River, Lake Redman and other creeks and waterways. “We go out and help with flooded roads,” Maxine said. “We also do ice rescues. Fall Craft Show Seeks Vendors many years. He passed away in 2021, but Maxine continues to volunteer because the organization meant so much to both of them. “He really took this to heart,” Maxine said. “Both of us have seen the caring of the people who are involved in the rescue, and both of us were on rescue for years and years. We know that the rescue makes a difference in the community.” She encourages the public to come out to the anniversary celebration and learn more about the rescue’s history and importance in the region. “You can come and talk to our chief … or talk to any of our rescue members, ask questions and learn more about us,” she said. “Come out and enjoy the day, play some games, have fun and get to know what we’re all about.” For more information about Lake Clarke Rescue, call 717-252-2914.

Leisure Lanes, 3440 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, will host a mini golf tournament fundraising event Saturday, Aug. 13. The tournament, organized in association with the PlayYellow and Extra Life programs, will raise money to benefit the Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in Hershey as a part of the Children’s Miracle Network. Registration has been scheduled for 9 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The tournament will have a set cost per player and a team maximum of four players, with availability for up to 36 teams total. Leisure Lanes will sell food and beverages at the event, which will be held on both the miniature course and the grass. Children must be age 10 or older to play on the latter. People of all ages and levels of experience are invited to participate, whether they are professional golfers or amateur players. The Putting for Miracles tournament was conceived by Dave Chobanoff, a longtime
participant in Extra Life, a Children’s Miracle Network program centered around raising money for children’s hospitals through games. Extra Life raises funds through its network of players and streamers as they stream online and facilitate fundraisers year-round. “A lot of people think the program involves video games only, but it includes any type of game,” said Chobanoff. “Anything from video games to board games to cornhole.” He first discovered the program and became involved with the Children’s Miracle Network when a friend invited him to participate in an event. “I said, ‘Hey, I’m game for that,’ no pun intended,” Chobanoff quipped. “I’ve met quite a few Miracle Children and families and gotten to watch them grow. I was captivated by the program.” Money raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is used in a variety of ways at member facilities; funds are distributed for research, patient services, advancement services, charitable care and hospital equipment. McCarty encourages golfers of any ability to sign up for the tournament, noting that the event takes a unique approach to winning. “For your average weekend warrior, you might not have a chance to win anything in a regular tournament, but this tournament gives everybody a chance at winning something,” he said, noting that prizes will be awarded to the top finishers as well as the top three finishers of a second flight when the field is cut in half by scores. “This tournament is a chance to get together with your friends, have a fun day and help support your community at the same time.” The registration deadline for the tournament is Monday, Sept. 5.
