Celebrate Fall At St. John’s “This is like hitting a big garage sale,” said Carole Hayes, describing the Fall Fest at St. John’s Herr Estate. “We have a huge variety of items.” The Fall Fest will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the retirement community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia. Items for sale will include books, puzzles, household goods, crafts, jewelry and baked goods made by residents. “You never know what we’re going to have for sale,” shared Anita Perrone, president of the executive committee. “This year we have an antique ironing board.” Along with other volunteers, Perrone and Hayes, vice president of the executive committee, spend all year collecting items from residents and residents’ families, as well as donations from the community. “People are always giving their stuff away,” Hayes noted. “ We

have hundreds of books. We have stuffed animals and toys. People make afghans, hats and dishrags to sell. We really have something for everyone.” The Fall Fest will also feature food for sale, including homemade chicken corn soup, hot dogs, sloppy joes and beverages.

“It’s just fun to walk around and see what we have for sale and pick up a bargain. Everything is priced to sell.” “The chicken corn soup is our head of dining services’ grandmother’s recipe, and it’s very good,” Perrone said. Soup will be available to enjoy on site and for carryout. Money raised from the Fall Fest will benefit local organizations selected by the community’s residents’ council. Proceeds will also be

used for the St. John’s benevolent fund. Hayes and Perrone noted that the Fall Fest requires a lot of planning to pull off a successful event. “It’s all run by volunteers,” Perrone stated. “We couldn’t do this without our volunteers.” Hayes encouraged everyone to come out and shop, eat and socialize at the Fall Fest. “It’s fun to meet and talk with people,” she said. “It’s just fun to walk around and see what we have for sale and pick up a bargain. Everything is priced to sell.” As of late August, the Fall Fest was scheduled to be held indoors at St. John’s, in the chapel and nearby hallways. If necessary due to COVID restrictions, the sale will be held outside in the parking lot. Signs will be posted at the community directing people where to go for the Fall Fest. Masks will be required, whether the Fall Fest is held indoors or outside.

“Pawpaws are the quintessential local food,” said Alexis Campbell, executive director of the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education in York. “The pawpaw is unique, because it’s sort of a hidden or forgotten fruit. It does not have a long shelf life, and it’s not something that’s produced on a mass scale or available in grocery stores. Pawpaws are a unique expression of our particular bioregion in central Pennsylvania.”

LDHL Provides Interest-Free Loans Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL) recently awarded interest-free loans to 257 Lancaster County students to offset the cost of their post-secondary education for the 2021-22 school year. The recipients are applicants who demonstrated financial need. The interest-free loans varied from $850 each for students attending one semester only to $1,700 each for students attending a full aca-

demic year. LDHL awarded loans to nine single-semester students and 248 full-year students. The loans will be applied to tuition expenses at 82 colleges and universities across the country. repayment of loans granted to previous recipients. LDHL is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to provide financial resources to Lancaster County residents in support of their postsecondary education goals. By offering funds to Lancaster County students on an annual basis, LDHL hopes to lessen the long-term expense for postsecondary education and training. To learn more, visit www.lancdollars.org.

Good Deed from pg 1 Award meant much more than receiving a pin or certificate. “I get to help others,” she stated. “I feel really happy when I see a smile on someone else’s face just by me doing a good deed.” Troop member Jessica Sechrist said the project was a lot of fun, and Ariana Hesson said donating her time and efforts to the project was all part of what it means to be a Girl Scout. Completing the project required putting many ideas together, said troop member Shelby Breen, who noted that the toughest part of the project was “the persistence and showing up every morning ready to work.” Troop members Charlotte Pritts and Lilly Sitler enjoyed working together as a troop to make something beautiful and useful, and both enjoyed painting the truck bed. Troop member Emily Spagnolo said she was happy to discover the troop worked and communicated well together. “I’m proud of everyone and think we should be proud of each other,” she stated. Encouraging other Girl Scouts to earn their Silver Award, Ruby Lawton said, “I would say if you have an idea, go for it! The satisfaction is reward enough.” Her fellow Girl Scout Austen Pritts agreed, adding, “I would say that you should speak up if you have an idea for a Silver Award, because it can really impact someone else’s life.”

“We got the idea for the project from co-leader Natalie Lawton,” said troop co-leader Jen Sitler, who noted that Lawton knew of the work Aimee Jo Morris does on the farm, a nonprofit organization that seeks to promote the mental and physical health of veterans through hands-on programming. Morris had an old truck bed on the property and wanted to turn it into a produce cart for the veterans to display and sell the food they grow. The troop of nine seventhgrade girls got to work brainstorming ideas, submitting donation requests and completing almost all of the hands-on work, including cleaning up the truck, sanding, doing body putty work, cutting wood and measuring roof angles and board pieces. They also used power tools, including drills, sanders and miter saws, and spray- and hand-painted the final product. In total, the girls put in a combined 195 hours to complete the project. Community donations from Geo’s Auto Repair, Billet Industries, Barney’s Auto Center, Rick’s Home Center, Lowe’s and ReStore York made the project possible. The girls had a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 30. In addition to their Silver Award, the girls were given a Veterans Humanitarian Award from Glenn Hope Care Farm. 23rd Annual Event

In fact, pawpaws are the most abundant edible fruit native to the eastern United States. Horn Farm, 4945 Horn Road, will celebrate the fruit at the 17th annual Pawpaw Festival, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, and Sunday, Sept. 19. The Pawpaw Festival was founded by Dick and Judy Bono, longtime friends of the Horn Farm who were introduced to the fruit on a tour of an orchard in Maryland. They held a pawpawthemed dinner in York, which grew over the years into the festival. “They started selling fruit and growing trees at their home … and it gained so much momentum, they needed to expand, so they brought it to the Horn Farm,” Campbell explained. Dick developed a pawpaw orchard at the Horn Farm, where the festival has been held since 2017. Campbell described the taste of a pawpaw as a cross between a mango and a banana. “It has a custard-like texture,” she stated. “There’s a tropical flavor.” The Pawpaw Festival will include both wild and cultivated varieties of pawpaw fruit and trees for purchase. Pawpaw items, including cookbooks, books and Tshirts, will be for sale. A pawpaw tasting box, including six pawpaw varieties, will be available for purchase. The festival will also feature local food vendors, artisans and community organizations, as well as fresh produce from the Horn Farm, native plants, jams, jellies, honey and

The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will offer a Starwatch at its observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 8 to 10 p.m. The public is invited. Anyone who owns a telescope and would like some assistance in using it may bring it along, too. The evening will begin with a screened astronomical presentation on current events and the September night sky. Guests will then be guided on a tour of the sky through one of the club’s telescopes. Attendees will be shown a host of celestial objects, including Saturn, Jupiter, the Hercules star clusters, Ring Nebula, and more. While this event is free and open to the public, donations are welcome and will help YCAS continue to bring astronomical events to York County and surrounding areas. If the sky is clear, all activities will occur as scheduled. If it is completely cloudy or raining, the indoor activity of a screen astronomical presentation will occur as scheduled. In the event of extreme weather, call 717759-9227 for notice of cancellation or search for “York County Astronomical Society (YCAS)” on Facebook.
