Pig Iron Fest Will Celebrate Local History BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This is a day that’s all about fun, food, entertainment and history,” said Marcus Snow, describing the Pig Iron Fest and Car Show. The event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at East Donegal Township Chickies Creek Day Use Area, 1467 Long Lane, Columbia. The event will feature a car show, with categories including classic, antique and street rod cars. “We
will have 12 trophies in different categories for the winners,” Snow stated, adding that people can register their cars on the day of the event. The Pig Iron Fest will feature crafters, artists, a food court, a kids’ zone, live entertainment and history tours. “Our kids’ zone is always very popular,” Snow remarked. “We’ll have lots of activities, including a hayride, crafts and pumpkin painting.” See Pig Iron pg 4

Putting Local Art In The Spotlight hen you think of the Columbia Public Library, you might think of what’s on the shelves, but on Sunday, Sept. 19, you should look at the walls. The Columbia Public Library Art Auction will be held that day, featuring historic artwork, pieces from local artists, rare books and more. The event will be held at the library, 24 S. Sixth St., beginning at 12:30 p.m. for browsing, followed by the auction at 2 p.m. Pieces to be auctioned will include an original pen and ink drawing of the Wilton Armetale trademark by artist and designer Wilfred Adrian Ferguson; a still life painting by Columbia High School teacher Dorothy Cooper; a Columbia-Wrightsville bridge photograph by John Reitzel; works by contemporary artists Julie Yontz Rupp, Janette TothMusser, Susan Darling, Rob Evans and Jeff Himes; two Lloyd Mifflin books; and many more historical local pieces. “We are also offering a buy-it-now
stressed that it will offer something for everyone. “It’s for art and literature lovers,” she said. Visitors to the auction are invited to walk through the library, view the art and visit the buy-it-now table. The auction will be held on the library’s terrace. Light refreshments will be available in the Locust Street Park gazebo. “Since 1929, the Columbia Public Library’s primary mission has been to serve the local community by providing the tools and resources people need to create their own world,” Gamby stated. “As a public library, we have the opportunity to influence the lives of others in a positive manner, and we take that responsibility to heart. Looking toward the future, we see the importance of maintaining our library as a community builder, a center for cultural diversity, a center for the arts, an institute of learning and a champion of youth.” For more information on the library or the art auction, visit https://columbiapubliclibrary.org.
A kids’ zone will be one highlight of the upcoming Pig Iron Fest and Car Show.

In September of 2017, Kevin and Rebecca Keller’s son, Mason, received a diagnosis that one in every 5,000 young boys receives each year. Mason, who lives in York, was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a degenerative disease. “This affects every muscle in his body, even his tongue,” explained Rebecca, who added that people with Duchenne eventually lose their ability to eat without a feeding tube. All cases of Duchenne are genetic,

table that includes paintings from local artists, Gardiner C. Criswell lithograph postcards, valuable books for the literature lovers and a few other unique pieces,” said Robin Gamby, library board member. “The library’s permanent collection will also be on display for viewing during the auction.” Over the years, the library has amassed a large collection of artwork and is running out of storage space and room to display the pieces. A committee of volunteers came up with the idea of the auction to reduce the collection a bit and raise money to preserve the permanent collection. The auction was originally scheduled for 2020 but had to be postponed due to the pandemic. The committee hopes to make it an annual event. “We take the preservation of the art and collections that we have been blessed with seriously,” Gamby stated. “The proceeds from (this) event will be used to preserve the pieces that will remain in the library’s permanent collection for future generations to enjoy.” Although the auction will mostly focus on Columbia history, Gamby

“This is a heritage days event to celebrate the township and its history,” said Jeff Williams, describing the Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days. The 23rd annual event will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18 and 19, at Conoy Township Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. Saturday’s festivities will begin at 9 a.m. and will include a tractor parade at 11 a.m. and a benefit auction at 2 p.m. Sunday’s event will begin with breakfast served from 7 to 9 a.m. by the Conoy Lions Club, followed by a church service at 9 a.m. “All of the township churches
have a community service, which will run until 10 a.m.,” Williams stated. Sunday’s tractor parade will begin at noon. A highlight of this year’s event will be hayrides to a blacksmith shop in Bainbridge, where a blacksmith dressed in period clothing will provide demonstrations. The shop, located at 15 S. Second St., had been privately owned when it went up for sale in 2019. “The Bainbridge Township supervisors decided to buy it and save it for future generations to enjoy,” Williams explained, noting that the building dates to 1810 and is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Bainbridge. “The township wanted to be good stewards of our history. What a rare gem we have in our little town, and we wanted to let a new generation see it and appreciate it.” Will Smith, whose great-greatgrandfather was a blacksmith, will provide the blacksmithing demonstrations. “This town is incredibly lucky to have a building like this,” Smith said. Williams noted that the township supervisors hope to continue to use the blacksmith building for school group visits and other special events. Additional activities at the Field

“We will also have a Civil War reenactment camp and a Revolutionary War re-enactment camp,” Williams stated. Proceeds from the Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days will be used to fund next year’s event, Williams explained, adding that money will be raised through donations at the event as well as the auction. He encouraged everyone to come out for a fun day that celebrates the town’s history. “Parking is free, entry is free, the hayrides are free and the entertainment is free,” he stated. “There is so much to see and do.” For more information, search for “Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days” on Facebook.
Construction is underway on the new Kreutz Creek Library. Kinsley Construction Inc. is leading construction at the former Hellam Township building on Walnut Springs Road. The space spans 8,800 square feet and will house books, resources and activities for children, teens and adults. Kreutz Creek Library has been serving the community for 42 years in a doublewide FEMA trailer that once housed families displaced by Hurricane Agnes in the 1970s. The library has outgrown the 1,200-square-foot trailer and anticipates moving to its future location this fall.

Days event will include hayrides to a pumpkin patch, barrel train rides for children, crafters, vendors and lots of food. A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held on Saturday. “All throughout the event, we’re going to have bluegrass music, and we have at least a dozen food stands,” Williams remarked. “They are run by local nonprofit groups like churches, the Boy Scouts and the Lions Club.” Apple cider pressed on site will also be available. Dance Around During A Day Of Music Since 1962, the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation (LPAF) has aimed to enrich the quality of life in Lancaster County by providing cultural programming at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. LPAF accomplishes this goal through its Summer Music Series and Labor Day weekend Art Festival. To thank the community and offer another opportunity to enjoy live entertainment outside, LPAF will host a one-time Day of Music event on Saturday, Sept. 18. It will take place at Long’s Park and will feature both national and local acts. The venue will open at 2 p.m., and performances will begin at about 2:45 p.m. Performers will include national acts Shannon McNally, The National Reserve, and Big Sam’s Funky Nation, as well as local musicians The Wild Hymns, Tractor Jerry & The Mud Bucket, and Tuck Ryan Band. These
artists will introduce the public to a diverse array of musical genres, including soul, funk, country, and Americana. David Wauls, president of LPAF, noted that the event will give people a chance to hear familiar performers and to get acquainted with ones they hadn’t previously heard of. “Long’s Park has such a long standing tradition with providing qualified, curated, live entertainment for the community,” said Day of Music Chair Tony Kirchner. “What I’m probably most excited about is the idea of constant flow of music featuring national artists but also some regional artists as well. The goal was to stretch through genres, stretch through boundaries, but also stay true to ... what Long’s Park traditionally programs.” Day of Music will be a free event, but donations are encouraged. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on-site, and a beer garden facilitated by the owners of Trio Bar

something going on in your backyard, so take advantage of it!” Wauls mentioned that this event is made possible through the support of sponsors and donors and by revenue generated by the annual Labor Day Weekend Art Festival. For more information, visit www.longspark.org/dayofmusic.

Echo Valley Art Auction Will Showcase Local Works Members of the Echo Valley Art Group have a passion for their craft, but they also have a problem. Years of creating art has created an overabundance of artwork and limited storage space. On Saturday, Sept. 18, the Saddlebag Riders TEAM of Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries (MJM) will host a motorcycle rally at Bethany Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church of Creswell, 1165 Letort Road, Conestoga. Motorcyclists can arrive at the church as early as 9 a.m., and the ride will take off around 10 a.m. through York County. Members from the ministry will ride as a group, and participants are welcome to join or go at their own pace. Saddlebag Riders TEAM president Chuck Moore noted this will be the fourth ride.
“It’s always a nice ride,” said Moore. “We’re hoping for a good turnout with more people.” There is no cost to participate, but donations will be accepted for the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), which was founded by a group of veterans from Roanoke, Va., in 2003. The WWP aims to help injured military members through a variety of services in career counseling, mental health, police advocacy, and long-term rehabilitative care. In 2020, over 1,350 military personnel, caregivers, and family members signed up each month to receive assistance from the WWP. See WWP pg 5

but only some are hereditary. In Mason’s case, Duchenne is the result of a spontaneous mutation in the genes. Mason has trouble navigating stairs, is prone to falling and has difficulty with fine-motor tasks like writing. But, his mother said, there is hope. “We’ve been involved with clinical trials and gene therapy,” she stated, “and once a week he’s been getting an IV infusion that’s helping his body to make a little bit of the protein that he’s missing. That has made a dramatic difference for him, so that’s hopeful.” Inspired to focus on that hope, earlier this year the Kellers founded Love Gives, a nonprofit with a mission of helping children like Mason. The organization will host the second annual Mason Keller Golf Tournament and Silent Auction on Friday, Sept. 17, at Cool Creek Golf Club in Wrightsville. Last year, the Kellers fundraised through the Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, but now their efforts will support their own nonprofit, which focuses specifically on local families. Proceeds from the tournament will help make improvements to Susquehanna Waldorf School in Marietta, where Mason, now 8, attends as a second grader. The school is in a building built in 1899 that, although it’s a historical gem for Marietta, needs accessibility updates to accommodate children like Mason. “The first order of business is getting two stair lifts for the main stairway,” Rebecca explained, adding that eventually stairs to the lower level and the main entrance will also need stair lifts. Each stair lift costs between $3,000 and $4,000. Another goal is to modify the school’s bathrooms, which are on the smaller side and therefore difficult to navigate with a walker or scooter.
Park, 1899 Apostle Way, Lancaster. The grounds will open at noon for browsing, and the auction will begin at 1 p.m. “The auction is a fun, relaxed event,” said Carol Toner Shane, an artist with Echo Valley. “It’s a nice afternoon to enjoy art in a beautiful setting.” Hundreds of works by 20 artists will be up for auction at the event. Artists will be on site with their art, and Shane encourages attendees to talk to them about their work. “Every item will be marked with a minimum bid, and a lot of the art goes for the minimum bid,” Shane explained. “Some gets hyped up and there’s a lot of competition between bidders, so that’s always fun, too.” Along with the auction, the event will feature live music and a free children’s art project from 12:30 to 2 p.m. for those ages 6 to 12. “Susan Ulrich, the new high school art teacher at Lancaster Catholic High School, will be working with the kids on the project,” Shane said, noting that the project will keep children occupied while parents browse the artwork. The event will also include food for purchase. Echo Valley is a group of profes-

Rebecca hopes that their efforts at Susquehanna Waldorf School will benefit other students in the future and that Love Gives can help families throughout central Pennsylvania. The organization is planning a running-focused fundraiser for the spring as well. When he’s not in school, Mason loves playing with remote-controlled cars and Legos, and he enjoys fishing with his father. “He’s very close to his sister, who helps him when he needs things,” Rebecca said of Katie, who is in first grade at Susquehanna Waldorf School. “They have a lot of fun together.” Rebecca noted that learning her son had Duchenne was a difficult experience, but she likes to focus on the positive. “Having this diagnosis really gives you a great deal of humility,” she stated. “It helps you see how much love and support there really is in the community, and that’s encouraging because some days can be really hard.” For more information on Love Gives or to register for the golf tournament, visit www.ourlovegives.org.
sional artists who meet regularly and exhibit art together, Shane said. “We currently have 23 members, and our membership is limited to 25,” she stated. “We have a wide range of artists in our group. Our youngest member is in her 20s, and our oldest is in his 90s.” Members include Ann DeLaurentis, Rob Evans, Becky Blosser, Dick Whitson, Brant Schuller and Susan Gottlieb. The group holds the auction not only to get art into the hands of more people, but also to support young artists in the county. Proceeds will support local youth art exhibits and will fund events such as bus trips to major museums for local students. Shane said the event is a casual, low-key way to enjoy art. “There’s no pressure,” she explained. “You can just come to look around, eat lunch and talk with the artists. We love talking to people about our art.” The event is also a way to showcase original art that’s affordable, she said, adding, “We started this event because we believe as artists that original art enhances your life and makes your life better.” For more information on the Echo Valley Art Group Art Auction, visit www.echovalleyartgroup.com.

Live music will be performed by Tim Rinard, and juggler Chris Ivey will also entertain. Vendors will be on site, featuring a variety of items. “We have someone who sells 19th-century-inspired jewelry,” Snow said, adding that another vendor will offer crafts inspired by local Native American tribes. “We’ll have a blacksmith and a guy who uses what we call a ‘putt-putt’ engine, or an engine dating from the early 1900s, to mix ice cream.” Snow noted that while the festival is traditionally held adjacent to the Musselman Vesta Iron Furnace, this year’s event will take place in a new venue. “This year will be a little different, but we are still going to focus on history,” he said. “We’ll have some displays about the pig iron industry, and we’ll be doing tours of a historic
farm on the property.” The Pig Iron Fest is a way to honor the history of the region. “This area was very important in the production of pig iron,” Snow explained. “It was ideally situated along the river for easy transport. What is now the Northwest River Trail was once a big industrial zone.” The festival is sponsored by the Donegal Rotary Club, and money raised by the event will be used to preserve local historic sites. Proceeds will also benefit the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank and will be used to support veterans’ organizations, including Glenn Hope Care Farm in Felton. The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will offer a public event at its observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, Sept. 18. A program titled “Solar and Radio Astronomy” will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with “How to Buy an Astronomical Telescope” from 1 to 2 p.m. YCAS member Kerry Smith will present the radio astronomy portion of the event and give attendees a peek into the future of YCAS’ radio astronomy endeavors. Radio astronomy is the study of unseen radiated energy in the electromagnetic spectrum below visible light. By using radio astronomy, humans are able to study astronomical phenomena that are otherwise invisible. Attendees will also be able to view the sun through YCAS’ solar telescope, as well as view it remotely on a TV screen that will be hooked up to a telescope. YCAS member Mike Wenz will present this portion of the event. “How to Buy an Astronomical Telescope” will provide information and advice regarding how to buy one’s first optical astronomical telescope. This presentation will begin promptly at 1 p.m. Anyone who has a telescope and is unsure how to use it may bring the telescope to the event to receive assistance. If the sky is clear, all activities will occur as scheduled. If it is completely cloudy or raining, the indoor activity of a screen astronomical presentation will occur as scheduled. In the event of extreme weather, call 717-759-YCAS (9227) or search for “York County Astronomical Society (YCAS)” on Facebook for notice of cancellation.
