Bringing The Fun (And Funk) To Columbia BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Head to downtown Columbia on Friday, Sept. 24, for a night of food, music and shopping when the Merchants Association of Columbia sponsors Columbia Friday Fun Night from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will take place along Fourth and Locust streets. The evening will feature live music

by the 10-piece Columbia-based party band Matches - Funk on Fire. “The street will be closed, so people can come and sit and enjoy the music,” said Michelle McFarland, event coordinator. Businesses and restaurants will also be open late for the event, she noted, including the new Columbia Market House, and many will have tables set up with samples or displays of their wares. Book Sale Will Benefit Library f you see a line of people waiting outside the Hellam Township Public Works building on Friday, Sept. 24, don’t worry. It’s just bookworms eager to check out the Friends of Kreutz Creek Library’s fall book sale, which will be held on Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The building is located at 44 Walnut Springs Road in York. “We usually have a line outside the building before the sale starts,” said Elizabeth McKonly, co-president of the Friends. “We have wonderful books. We go through them all and make sure they are still in nice shape to sell.” The book sale will include a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction books. “We have books for children to adults and teens in between,” McKonly said. The sale will feature DVDs, CDs and audiobooks as well. “We’ll have a selection of jigsaw puzzles, too,” said Friends co-president Betty Bell, who noted that the library sold

biggest sale ever.” The Friends use proceeds from the book sales to support the library and its programming. “We pay onethird of the operating costs of the library,” McKonly explained. Proceeds are also used to purchase new books and expand the library’s collection, which will be a priority this year as the library plans to move from its current location to the former Hellam Township building later this fall. The move will increase the library’s size from 1,200 square feet to 8,800 square feet and will provide room for more programs and activities to serve the community. “The Friends group has worked so hard in support of Kreutz Creek Library, and it’s wonderful to see their dream of a new library coming to fruition,” said Deb Sullivan, community relations director for York County Libraries. The fall book sale will follow current CDC COVID guidelines. Masks are recommended. For more information on the sale or the library, visit www. yorklibraries.org/hellam-kreutz-creek.

Brace yourself for the “silver tsunami.” That’s a term used to describe the predicted dearth of workers in the future as the current workforce ages into retirement. Through an innovative initiative, the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), is equipping students to prepare for their future. For more than 50 years, LCCTC has provided opportunities for high school and adult education, career training and workforce development.

out of puzzles at its spring sale. Along with books, the event will feature gently used jewelry for sale. “We get donations of jewelry, and this year, we have a really nice, big selection,” McKonly remarked. A variety of individually wrapped grab-and-go baked goods will also be available for purchase. McKonly acknowledged the efforts of the public works department in making sure the sale goes off without a hitch. “The public works employees, led by Curt Ferree, have been wonderful,” she said. “They clean out their equipment from the building. They make sure everything is clean and ready to go for us. They have been very supportive of our sales.” Bell noted that the employees have even helped to load up unsold books, which are donated to the Mennonite Central Committee. McKonly stated that the book sale is important because the library relies on the financial support of the Friends. “We do two sales a year, and they are our biggest fundraisers,” she said. “Our sale in April was our

For the past 31 years, the Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS) has preserved the history of the Penn Manor area. The CAHS was founded because of a change to the Lancaster County Historical Society, which discontinued collecting and housing artifacts and became a research and library facility. It was suggested that regional historical societies be formed, and the CAHS

As an ethnographic museum, CAHS shows the lifestyle of a particular group of people who lived in a particular area. As such, the museum consists of a complete encyclopedic history of the Penn Manor area with its collection of native rocks, minerals, taxidermy, clothing, trees, plants, and more. With the exception of two years last year being one of them - the CAHS has hosted an annual fall harvest festival since the organization’s formation. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 26, from noon to 4 p.m. The event will take place at Ehrlich Park, 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga. There will be demonstrations and sales of crafts made by weavers, blacksmiths, tinsmiths, pottery makers, rifle makers, and many more. People will be dressed in period clothing from the 18th and 19th centuries. Native Americans will set up teaching tables, and there will also be children’s activities, such as pumpkin painting and rope making. Vice president of CAHS Jim Kauffman noted that over 200 pumpkins were painted in 2019. “We have a rich cultural background, and it’s a matter of replicating it and sharing it with people,” stated museum curator Ken Hoak. “A lot of the demonstrations are more than just activities; they were livelihoods for people back then.

People will find this to be a great educational experience.” The festival will be free, but donations will be greatly appreciated. Live music will be provided by Dillweed, and Nanalyn’s Full-Filling Feasts will supply food for purchase. There will be an opportunity to win an authentic Flintlock rifle, the recipient of which will be announced on Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. The winner does not need to be present, and can choose a $1,000 cash prize instead of the rifle. There will also be two second and third cash prizes. “After being closed for so long, I’m excited to get a bunch of people here,” stated Kauffman. CAHS will remain open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. until Sunday, Nov. 28. For more information, call 717-872-1699 or visit www.pennmanorhistory.org.

Exhibit To Showcase Reitzel’s Photography Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) will host the photography of Columbia native and Air Force veteran John Reitzel through Monday, Nov. 22, at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The center’s visitor hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Entrance to the gallery is free, but donations are welcome.

The collection, “Columbia & Susquehanna: Through the Lens of John Reitzel,” will offer Reitzel’s images of the town of Columbia and of the nearby Susquehanna River in a variety of forms, colors, and seasons. Guests will see some of his favorite works alongside brief historical notes related to the views. The wooden frames holding the photos are handcrafted by Reitzel, as well.

It serves as an umbrella over the various postsecondary opportunities available to students, said Amber Kreger, director of higher and con-

Moeller noted that programs like the ones offered at LCCTC are meeting the needs of today’s employers while also serving the students. “Over the last few years, schools have really begun to the see the value of career and technology education as a way to earn a great living and learn skills, but with very minimal college debt,” he said. “There are so many opportunities for jobs in these fields as well.” Kreger agreed, adding that Pathways allows students to come in with a specific plan and the end result in mind. “There is a set goal and finish line,” she said. “That goal may change slightly as they go through their program, but there is a finish line, and we are offering students ways to get there.” For more information on LCCTC or Pathways, visit https://lancaster ctc.edu.
