Lantern Tour To Highlight Local History, Lore Participants will experience life as it was in the early 1800s when Rivertown Theatre Productions presents Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, themed “Authentic Illusions.” The annual event will take place on Friday, Oct. 16; Sunday, Oct. 18; Friday, Oct. 23; and Saturday, Oct. 24. Tours will run every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the final tour stepping off at 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, 23 and 24 and 8 p.m. on Oct. 18. Returning to directing the tour again this year are Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright, who noted that the event was expanded to two weekends in 2020. “Last year, we had 300 to 350 and we sold out and we had to turn people away,” Wright explained. “That’s why we expanded it. We expect up to 500 people this year.” Due to COVID-19, safety precautions will be in place. “It will be a little different this year,” said Mimnall. “We are asking our tour groups to all wear masks. They will have to remain 6 feet away from our tour
guides at all times. We are limiting our groups to 20 people each.” “Actors will not be wearing masks, which is why they have to stay 6 feet away from the tour groups,” she added. “With voices muffled (by a mask), they can’t perform a specific character.” The tour, led by actors from the nonprofit theater company, will begin and end at the Loyal Order of Moose, 223 Locust St., Columbia, and will venture down Locust and Second streets guided by lantern light. A trolley ride will also be part of the tour, and there will be an indoor location - the historic Samuel Miller mansion, which is now home to Art Printing Company at 131 Locust St. The characters being portrayed on the tour will include both fictional and real-life characters. For example, this year visitors will meet the original owners of the First National Bank of Columbia at the corner of Second and Locust streets. “Each of these characters performs as if they are living in the moment of the time period they were from,” Wright explained.
A cast of actors will portray characters living in the 1800s in Columbia during Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour.

Scriptwriting takes us to May, and we do auditions in June,” said Wright, noting that rehearsals start in July. “We rehearse once a week and, when it’s closer, two or three times a week. We walk the tour the whole way through. It would be impossible if we did
not have the support system of our actors and their families.” Organizers said the tour is a fun, interesting way to the learn about the local community. “Anybody would find this tour entertaining. We do cover some local history as far as Columbia is concerned, (but) the town’s history is only one part,” Wright said.
“There is comedy and drama. (The tour) is something we are both definitely proud of.” For more information about the tour and to reserve a spot, readers may call Holly at 717-587-5368. More details are available at www.columbiahlt.com and www.facebook.com/ ColumbiaHLT.

Fall Learning Event Planned The African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania and the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society are partnering to offer an Underground Railroad Learning Tour in Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. until noon. Guests will gather at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia.
The experience will feature presentations in outdoor covered spaces as well as guided walking tours in small groups. The walking tour will include an option to take in the new Underground Railroad exhibit at the Columbia Historic Preservation Society museum on North Second Street. Columbia is one of the earliest places where the term Underground Railroad was
commonly used to describe a network supporting formerly enslaved African Americans journeying to new lives. Stephen Smith and William Whipper, successful black entrepreneurs in Columbia, provided major financial assistance and logistical leadership that made the town a key Underground Railroad gateway to destinations north and east.
Recently uncovered written evidence reveals active participation in the Underground Railroad by some nearby Mennonites. A face covering is required. The tour will be held rain or shine. There is a cost per person. Advance registration is required by Wednesday, Oct. 7. Readers may register by visiting www.bit.ly/URTour or calling 717-393-9745.

The greater York community will celebrate the 51st annual CROP Hunger Walk as a virtual event on Sunday, Oct. 11, and the preceding week. People may walk individually or in small groups. Inspired by the words and actions of Jesus in Luke 10, organizers encourage participants to walk in their neighborhoods to remind residents that hunger still exists. Alternatively, churches or organizations can choose to walk in groups of 10 or fewer, observing masking and social distancing guidelines. Instead of a oneday walk on a prescribed route or distance, walkers are encouraged to walk at a time suitable to their needs and safety during the week leading up to Oct. 11. Adams explained to the students how to install structural timbers, and the students were responsible for making measurements, sawing boards to length and screwing the struts in place. He said that he was hoping to become a local construction worker after high school. “I came to the (LCCTC) for the hands-on learning and here we are,” Gage said, holding up a construction tape measure. “Working out here is great,” said LCCTC student Javan Vargas, a junior from Manheim Central School District. “We’ve been in school for two weeks and we are already out here building a 24-foot barn.” Javan was kneeling on a piece of lumber in the parking lot adjacent to the construction site and measuring out a length while his classmates

offered opinions and advice. He said that he had worked on small construction projects before coming to the LCCTC, but he had never worked on something this large before. He said that his favorite part of the project was breaking through the parking lot blacktop and pouring the concrete for the corner posts of the barn. “It’s really cool to know that you’re building something that is going to be here for a long time - something that a lot of people will use over the years,” Javan said.
Brian Engle, the fields coordinator from Donegal Youth Soccer, explained that the new shed will house all the materials that the group uses during meets such as jerseys, line equipment and goals. “The LCCTC had built a small shed for us on the same location. Over the years, we outgrew that shed and then some,” Engle said. “I really look forward to having a large, secure place to store our material, and we really appreciate all of the work from the (LCCTC) students.”

Students from the Mount Joy campus of the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) recently had an opportunity to take part in a hands-on learning project by constructing a storage pole barn for Donegal Youth Soccer. About 15 students in the Introduction to Construction Careers program, wearing blue safety helmets and masks, constructed the large storage shed in an area located adjacent to the soccer field in Cove Outlook Park on Old Market Street. The project was meant to be done in the spring, but the pandemic shutdown hit before construction could begin. The students were supervised by their instructor, Aaron Adams. “The students in this class are here to learn the basic skills of a variety of construction careers. So a project like this one with a variety of necessary skills is absolutely perfect for them,” Adams said, noting that the location of the site, which is situated across the street from the Mount Joy campus, was also ideal for the students. Steager Completes PSATS Program Dwayne Steager, building code and zoning enforcement officer for West Hempfield Township, recently completed the certificate program of the PSATS Municipal Government Academy (PMGA), a leadership and municipal education program of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS). Participants in the academy develop their leadership and communication skills and also receive training in one or all of four technical categories: administration, planning and zoning, public safety, and public works. PMGA participants earn points by attending classroom workshops and webinars and other PSATS educational
opportunities, such as the annual educational conference, regional forums, the Human Resources and Labor Management Institute, Boot Camp for Township Officials, and Grassroots Advocacy Day. In this year’s graduating class, four individuals, including Steager, completed the certificate program by earning 30 points in a single category, and five others completed the diploma category by earning 60 points from across all four areas of study. Steager earned his certificate in the planning and zoning category. For more information about the PSATS Municipal Government Academy, readers may visit www.pmga.psats.org.
Borough Receives Funds To Improve Water Systems The Wrightsville Borough Municipal Authority received two grants totaling over $1.2 million to improve water service in Wrightsville Borough. The grants will be used to rehabilitate existing systems to ensure efficient delivery of safe sewer water and drinking water for the people of Wrightsville. The Authority received $1 million from the H20 PA program to upgrade its water treatment plant and intake pumping station. H2O PA was established by the General Assembly in 2008 and is administered by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA). The program provides for single-year and multi-year grants for the construction of drinking water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer projects; the construction or renovation of flood control projects; and the repair or rehabilitation of highhazard unsafe dams. The Authority also received $230,000 from the PA Small Water and Sewer Program. The grant will be used to replace 526 water flow meters throughout the system to reduce unaccounted-for water
loss. The PA Small Water and Sewer Program was established by the General Assembly in 2016 to award grants to municipalities and municipal authorities for water, sewer, stormwater, and flood control projects with a cost of not less than $30,000 and not more than $500,000. The program is also administered by the CFA.
