J. Arthur Moore of Narvon, author of the Civil War series “Journey Into Darkness,” has recently published his first new book in six years, and he plans to have another book out later this fall. “West to Freedom,” which was released in September, is the story of best friends who in 1862 embark on a journey to free one of them from the bonds of slavery. “Summer in Stewart Creek,” due out by early November, transports a

young man from his hometown of Baltimore to the fictitious town of Snow Shoe, W.Va., in the summer of 1879. “West to Freedom,” was written prior to 2010. Moore called the 56-page story more of a novella or extended short story than a book. Set in northwest Arkansas, the tale follows Thomas Reynolds and his best friend, Daniel Russell, who was born into slavery. When Thomas learns Daniel is in danger of being sold, he and his father plan to help Daniel escape west to the Cherokee nation. “The story is totally fiction and the only thing I have ever done that directly involves slavery,” said Moore. Moore taught school for more than 40 years, and his students who were photographed for the cover art for “West to Freedom,” John Rivera as Daniel Russell and Thomas Ristine as Thomas Reynolds, are now grown. “Summer at Stewart Creek,” which is more than 100 pages, is based on campers Moore met at a camp on Cape Cod in 1979.

“This book is totally unrelated to anything else I have done,” mused Moore. A model railroad enthusiast, who serves as vice president of the Short Line Club in Ephrata, Moore based the setting on the layout in his basement, using realistic-looking photos at the ends of chapters. “All (the story) is imaginary,” said Moore, “including the Virginia and Truckee Railroad of West Virginia.”

James Wunderlich of Nottingham portrayed Brett Tompkins on the cover of J. Arthur Moore’s book “SumSee Local Auhor pg 5 mer at Stewart Creek.”

Wildlife from pg 1 provide wildlife rehabilitation services to raptors, mammals, and waterfowl and to offer wildlife education programs. The permits certify that Young has the required knowledge and skills to safely handle wild animals, and they protect her from state laws that levy fines of up to $1,500 for taking or possessing wildlife. “Sometimes good intentions by a person is not good for the animal,” Young said. “The instinct is to cuddle and love on them, (but) we keep them wild. We want to fix them, get them healthy, and get them back out (into their

habitats).” Young also stressed that improper handling of wild animals can put humans at risk of serious diseases, which is one of the reasons home care is unlawful. “Don’t handle them yourself. Whoever handles these animals must be vaccinated,” Young advised, noting that she and her small staff of volunteers maintain a preinfection rabies vaccine schedule. “Rabies can be transmitted in saliva - not just through bites - and humans have thousands of tiny cuts on our hands. You must be tested after touching (a wild animal).” Even if animals do not display symptoms of rabies, they might

be carrying the deadly neurological disease. Young recommends caution when capturing and transporting injured rabies vector species: raccoons, groundhogs, foxes, skunks, bats, and coyotes. Handlers may protect themselves from touching an animal with bare hands by wearing heavy gloves and wrapping the animal in a thick towel. Raven Ridge started in Young’s townhome but is now located in a circa 1898 barn that has been upgraded to include running water, electricity, and new windows. New flooring was slated for installation on Oct. 5, so the number of animals staying at the center has been limited. Young has been referring

some animals to other rehab centers. Once the renovation is completed, the center will be able to operate as usual. Currently, the center is caring for a hawk with spinal problems and a Cooper’s hawk that hit a window head-on. After two weeks of treatment, both raptors are standing and eating on their own. The center is also raising two baby opossums that fell into a garbage can. When they are old enough to survive on their own, they will be released into the wild. The center also has ambassador animals that were unable to be released into the wild. Young’s veterinarian submitted letters to the Game Commission as part of the permitting process. “We take our ambassadors

out to teach the public about these animals,” Young said. “We don’t receive any state, local, or federal funding. The programs bring in revenue.” Well, prior to COVID-19, they did. 2020 had been set to be the center’s busiest yet, with a full calendar of programs, but everything has been canceled. Young and her team are working on creating online presentations to fill the gap. Without the income from programs, the budget is running especially lean. Rehabilitating wild animals is a service offered free of charge to the public, but it is expensive. Readers who would like to support the center may visit www.ravenridge.org to access the Amazon wish list or make an online donation. For

Barron Von Vulture is one of the ambassador animals that Raven Ridge Wildlife Center founder and director Tracie Young takes to educational presentations.

more information, the center may be reached at contact@ ravenridge.org or by private message to the Raven Ridge Wildlife Center Facebook page.
