A Celebration Of Life BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Death is not always something to be mourned. Sometimes, it’s an opportunity to celebrate the life of the deceased. With that in mind, Mount Bethel Cemetery will host a Dia de Muertos (day of the dead) celebration on Sunday, Oct. 31, at

Robert A. Herman Jr. (fourth from left), accompanied by his wife, Sylvia (third from left), will serve as grand marshal of the Columbia Mardi Gras Halloween Parade.

Everyone Loves A Parade ith a theme of “Reunited and It Feels So Good,” the 74th Mardi Gras Halloween Parade will return to Columbia on Thursday, Oct. 28. The parade will step off at 7 p.m. from 10th and Manor streets before proceeding along the 1.5-mile route that will include blocks of Manor, Fourth, Union, Second, Locust and Sixth streets. The parade is sponsored by the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, which have announced that Robert A. Herman Jr. will serve as grand marshal. He and his wife, Sylvia, will lead the parade in a horse-drawn carriage. Five divisions will be featured in the parade, and attendees will be able to see high school marching bands, baton groups, Scout troops, floats, walking groups, fire companies and local businesses. A steam calliope will be the final unit, which has been a tradition for nearly 20 years. “Everyone loves a parade, and that’s especially true in Columbia,” said Paul Resch, vice president of

offer, including things that might have been missed if the entrants were to save their best performance for a specific reviewing area. Several nonprofit organizations will sell food along the parade route. For the safety of spectators, parade participants are reminded not to throw candy from floats, Resch said. Handing out candy along the curb line is permitted. Columbia Borough Police have identified social distancing zones along the parade route that will be designated as no parking areas to allow spectators to spread out along the curb line and safely watch the parade. Municipal parking lots at 102 Locust St. and the 200 block of Avenue H will be open, and parking will be available from 6 to 9 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 121 S. Second St.; Holy Trinity Church, 409 Cherry St.; and Columbia United Methodist Church, 510 Walnut St. For more information or to enter a unit in the parade, call John or Cheryl Grunden at 717-684-2714 or search for “Columbia Mardi Gras Halloween Parade” on Facebook.

Nevaeh Pittenger (left) and Payton Fulmer will be among the presenters at Dia de Muertos in Mount Bethel Cemetery.

the Lions Club. “People really look forward to both the Memorial Day parade and the Halloween parade. … We’re ready to put on an awesome parade this year, hopefully one of the biggest and best ever.” Resch noted that interest in the parade is higher than usual this year since the past three parades two Memorial Day parades and one Halloween parade - have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year is believed to be the first year the Halloween parade was canceled in its history. Parade organizers are encouraging spectators to light up the parade route with their cell phone lights as a sign of unity and a tribute to all those affected by the coronavirus as the first division passes by. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in various categories. John Grunden, Lions Club treasurer, explained that judges are anonymous and roam the parade route to rate entrants on their overall appearance and performance. This system helps ensure that parade viewers get a fair representation of what each unit has to

the cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia. The event will be held in conjunction with the Columbia Halloween Tour and will run from 3 to 8 p.m. Tickets for the tour can be purchased at the Columbia Market House on the day of the event from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Although celebrated throughout Latin America, Dia de Muertos is most strongly associated with Mexico, where the tradition originated, said Claire Storm, one of the event organizers. “This is a day of celebration,” she explained. “You celebrate those people who have gone before you.” Traditional Dia de Muertos events include food, drinks, parties and activities the deceased enjoyed in life. At the cemetery, an ofrenda will be set up. “This is an altar where people will be able to memorialize with a candle someone who has passed, someone who meant something special to them,” Storm stated. The ofrenda will be located on the cottage porch in the cemetery, and the cottage will feature some spooky sights.

Zion Lutheran Church members (from left) Mariann Reider, Gail Houck, Nancy Reider, Mary Eppley and Mary Ann Eshleman gather items for the upcoming bazaar. BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Walking into the annual holiday bazaar at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marietta, you never know what you’re going to find. It could be a one-of-a-kind handcrafted gift, a piece of holiday décor or even a delicious take-home dinner. The bazaar will be held in the fellowship hall of the church, 1290 River Road, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5 and 6. “We have three main categories for our bazaar,” said Mary Ann Eshleman, bazaar organizer. “We have food, crafts and a white elephant area.” This year, the food will be available to go only. “We’ll have cold soups and barbecue that people can take home to heat up,” Eshleman explained. “We’ll be serving beef vegetable soup, chicken corn (soup) and ham and bean soup, plus pork and hamburger barbecue as well as baked goods, candy and snacks. People love the snacks and baked goods table. They come in, and they go right to that.” The bazaar will also feature a wide variety of crafts. “It’s really like a mini craft show,” Eshleman noted. “We’ve got holiday-themed Christmas items, fall items, décor that can be out year-round. We have wreaths and arrangements. There’s a whole section of jewelry, including beaded earrings, necklaces and bracelets.” A church member who crochets will offer handmade hats, scarves and stuffed animals, and members of the congregation will feature their wood creations, including pallet

wood furniture, birdhouses, wall sconces and accent tables. The white elephant section of the bazaar will feature bargain-priced items, including books and jigsaw puzzles. “It’s pretty much a little bit of anything at really good prices,” Eshleman stated. She noted that a committee of church members gathers year-round to create items for the bazaar, which has been held annually for many years. Half of the proceeds will go toward the church’s elevator fund, while the other half will be split between Donegal Power Packs and the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank. “The bazaar is a great activity for the church,” Eshleman said. “It provides opportunities for fellowship throughout the year as we prepare for it. For the people who come to it, you can buy gifts for yourself or for others for Christmas, and the food table is always a good place to buy a sweet. Then you can take home either soup or barbecue for dinner.” Masks and social distancing are encouraged at the bazaar. For more information on the event, call the church at 717-426-1884.

“It’s a show that you think you’re ready for anything to happen, and then you have the rug pulled out from under you. The show opens on a vibrant note, and it ends on an eerie one.” Set in the Kit Kat Klub in 1930s Berlin, “Cabaret” intertwines nightlife with romance and political undertones as the Nazi party is ascending to power. It focuses on the relationship between American writer Cliff Bradshaw and British cabaret performer Sally Bowles with a subplot about a German boarding house owner and her Jewish suitor. The action is overseen by the Master of Ceremonies. Directed by Keifer Kemmerly, “Cabaret” features a cast of 18. “It’s a show about a seedy nightclub, but it’s also about the Nazi party coming to power and how the Nazis have an impact on the lives of the characters, almost without you realizing what’s happening,” explained Kent Gable, who portrays Cliff. “It’s a comical show, until it’s not.” Jordyn Johnson, who plays Sally, said she was drawn to the role because of the character’s depth. “We are taking the audience on a journey with us,” she stated. “There are aspects of the show that really hold a mirror up to society.” Gable agreed, adding that he enjoys playing a character who is more developed than many roles in musicals. “Looking at how my

Fortier noted that playing the larger-than-life character of the Master of Ceremonies has been a dream role. “It’s really such a great show,” he said. “I love how there are several subplots going on that make up the big picture, and I like how the (Master of Ceremonies) is retelling or reflecting what’s happening in the story.” Susquehanna Stage is located at 133 W. In September, the Society of American Florists (SAF) recognized Kenneth Royer, inducting the Lebanon resident into the Floriculture Hall of Fame at the association’s annual convention in Orlando, Fla. He was honored for his contributions to the industry. Kenneth’s son Greg, chairman of Royer’s, accepted the award on his father’s behalf.. SAF noted that Kenneth was the first florist in the country to implement computerized systems for his stores and was among the first florists to import flowers directly from South America. In 1998, he published the book “Retailing Flowers Profitably,” and he has held dozens of seminars on topics from marketing to management and post-harvest care, according to an article on SAF’s website. Kenneth also served on the boards of SAF and the American Floral Endowment. Industry recognition is nothing new for Kenneth. In 1983, he was inducted into the American Academy of Floriculture and was named Pennsylvania Retail Florist of the Year. In 1986, SAF presented him with its Golden Bouquet Award. In 2004, he received the FTD Lifetime Achievement Award.

She sold them at a local farmers market before she and her husband, Lester, converted their two-car garage into a flower shop. After school, Kenneth helped by delivering flowers to customers. After high school, he joined the business full time, and his career now spans 60 years. Fourth-generation familyowned Royer’s has 16 stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties, including one Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts location in Harrisburg. Sister company Connells Maple Lee Flowers & Gifts has three stores in the Columbus, Ohio, area.
