See This Trail Through A Geologist’s Eyes BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“There’s a lot going on along this trail,” said Jeri Jones, describing the 14-mile Northwest Lancaster County River Trail as it runs from Columbia to Falmouth. “There are so many cool things to see.” Jones combined his knowledge of the trail and his passion for geology to write “Geologic Guide to the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.” The book, which was published in 2020, provides an overview of 26 stops along the trail, beginning at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and ending at the Falmouth boat launch. “There is no geological knowledge required to enjoy this book,” Jones stated, noting that the book begins with what he calls “River Trail Geology 101,” which introduces readers to types of rocks and geologic features such as faults and folds. “I know people who like to carry this book on the trail with them. It’s a tool to enhance their trail walk and give them a purpose while they’re on the trail.”
Crafting for a Cause will be held at Columbia River Park.
Supporting The Community Through Crafts t’s not too early to get started on your Christmas shopping, said Kim Rightnour. She’s organizing Crafting for a Cause, a fall craft show sponsored by Chickies Rock Women of the Moose. The event will be held at Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We will have a wide variety of crafters,” she stated, adding that she expects about 50 vendors to participate. Items will include wooden signs and charcuterie boards, homemade candles and wax melts, jewelry, macrame, fine art and more. “We’ll also have two bakeries selling their products, and we’ll have a fresh flower vendor,” she noted. She
I
emphasized that the vendors are almost all local to the Columbia area, which is important to the Women of the Moose. “We believe in supporting the local community,” she explained. Several nonprofit organizations will have tables at the event, including Hogs and Heroes Foundation, a Columbia-based group that supports public safety and military members as well as wounded warriors. Food will be available at the craft show from Kurtz’s Concessions. “They have a big menu, from cheeseburgers to cotton candy and funnel cakes and freshly made kettle corn,” Rightnour said. The event will also feature music throughout the day as well as prize giveaways. “Every craft vendor who
participates donates an item they make from their stand, and we’ll be selling tickets (for a drawing) to raise additional money for our causes,” Rightnour noted. Crafting for a Cause benefits local projects of the Columbia Moose Lodge, including donations to local food banks and adopt-a-family holiday programs, as well as national programs. Moose International supports Mooseheart, a group home for children, and Moosehaven, a retirement community. The Women of the Moose hold two craft shows annually, one in the spring and one in the fall, Rightnour said, noting that the spring show is set for Saturday, May 14, 2022. The shows used to be held in the
Moose Lodge parking lot, but the event soon outgrew that space. “The park is a perfect location,” Rightnour remarked. “It’s a beautiful setting overlooking the river, and it’s very representative of Columbia and what this town has to offer.” She said there will be something for everyone at the craft show, noting, “You can get your Christmas shopping done in a day and you can support local businesses by purchasing local, American-made products. I’m a firm believer in supporting the businesses that provide to our community and help make Columbia a great place to live.” For more information on Crafting for a Cause, search for “Crafting for a Cause Fall Craft Show” on Facebook.

More than 150 participants gathered at John Rudy County Park in York on the morning of Sept. 18 for the annual York Heart Walk. Although the event had fewer participants than in previous years, it raised over $33,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA), a voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health for all and promoting physical and mental health through healthy habits. The participants included heart disease survivors and their family members, who wore matching homemade T-shirts, commemorative Heart Walk baseball caps, and Heart Hero capes. Among them was Missy Mulcahy Fischer, who began participating in the York Heart Walk in 2014

Walk fundraising goal, consistently putting her among the event’s top walkers who individually raised the most money. Despite being unable to hold her 5K this year, as of Sept. 20, she was in first place for the Top Walker prize with over $3,000 raised. She has raised a total of $93,000 in the past eight years. The funds raised at events like the Heart Walk support the American Heart Association’s mission, including advocating for public policy to improve community health, advancing the science of CPR, improving outcomes for heart and stroke patients, and investing in cardiovascular research that has led to life-saving advancements in prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. The star of this year’s Heart Walk was 21-month-old Jace Taughinbaugh of Gettysburg, a congenital heart defect survivor. Jace was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, called double outlet of the right ventricle with a subaortic ventricular septal defect, before he was born in November 2019. At birth, he was found to have several other defects, including fused ribs, an abnormal shaped vertebra
in the spine and a duplicated collecting system in his left kidney that resulted in a rare diagnoses of Goldenhar syndrome. He underwent two open heart surgeries and received a permanent pacemaker in 2020. With a little help from his mom, Jace cut the ribbon to officially kick off the Heart Walk, which took participants on a 5K walk through John Rudy County Park. Supporters who were unable to attend the Heart Walk in person were encouraged to walk on their own path. The American Heart Association encourages anyone who wishes to support the Heart Walk, but was unable to attend the event in person, to walk where they are and share their walk on social media using #YorkHeartWalk. The York Heart Walk was sponsored by WellSpan Health, which earned the top fundraising company honors; UPMC; Encompass Health; Glatfelter Insurance; and ManorCare. Joseph Iandolo, vice president of operations at UPMC Memorial, served as chair of the event. Visit www.heart.org/ yorkwalk to learn more.

the book highlights the Haldeman Mansion, the Musselman-Vesta Furnace, Shocks Mills railroad bridge and the White Cliffs of Conoy. In his 40 years of geologic research, Jones has written several other books, and he said his next project might be revisiting a topic he’s covered in the past - where to pan for gold in southeastern Pennsylvania. In the meantime, he invites people to pick up a copy of his river trail book and hit the trail. The book was made possible with support from three sponsors - Susquehanna National Heritage Area, Jones Geological Services (Jones’ Spring Grove-based business) and Rivertownes PA USA. Although it only came out last year, the book has sold well, Jones said, and it’s already in its third printing. The idea for the book came from Jones’ own experience along the trail. “I’m an educational geologist, and I used to take field trips to the Chickies Rock area,” he explained. “I wanted to share my knowledge of the area with people.” Chickies Rock is especially significant in geologic terms, he noted, because the outcrop is a classic example of an “anticline,” or a folded arch. “This is really the best example of this in the mid-Atlantic states,” Jones noted, adding that student groups from colleges throughout the region come to Lancaster County to study the site. A fossil known as skolithos was also discovered in the Chickies Rock area, he said. Jones had been thinking about writing the book for years, but when he retired from the York County Department of Parks and Recreation in 2017, he finally got to work on it. “I decided, ‘This needs to get done,’” he said. “I made it a priority.” Along with Chickies Rock,

Proceeds from the food drive will help provide meals for people experiencing homelessness and also support the Outreach Center.

For the past 116 years, Water Street Mission (WSM), located at 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, has provided men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County with access to medical, dental, behavioral health, spiritual, and career support. As a religious organization, one of the goals of WSM is to give people a sense of hope and healing so they can find restoration with God. On Monday, Nov. 1, WSM will launch its annual Rescue Mission Food Drive (RMFD) with the goal of collecting over 70,000 pounds of nonperishable food - which would weigh roughly the same as 24
cars - by Sunday, Dec. 19. Proceeds from RMFD will go in two directions: providing meals for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and also supporting the Outreach Center, a food distribution center for neighbors of WSM. The Outreach Center provides grocery assistance to over 2,000 individuals and families, sharing roughly 646,000 pounds of groceries with the community each year. According to Dan Siewart, vice president of community ministries and outreach, WSM serves food to about 300 families every week. Therefore, the food collected during RMFD is instrumental in meeting the needs of the community, especially as
the winter season nears. This winter, WSM estimates it will serve nearly 45,000 meals in its dining hall for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness. Over the colder months, WSM sees an increase in intakes as guests seek to escape the elements. “We appreciate people in the community who have partnered with us through this food drive,” said Siewart. “We really feel blessed and supported. Every year, people take part in this, so they’re helping us in more ways than one. It lifts our spirits when we see people respond.” Some of the suggested donation items include boxed cereal, canned fruit, canned meats, canned vegetables,
condiments, pasta, rice, mac and cheese, and more. Items in glass containers are strongly discouraged. Donations can be dropped off at Sharp Shopper, Boscov’s, Community Aid, and any Sheetz, Weis Markets, and AAA Central Penn location in Lancaster County. Donations can also be dropped off at WSM’s dock on Mondays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Anyone looking to participate or learn more about the event and food items needed can visit http://rescue missionfooddrive.org. maker, will be presented in the candlelit rooms of the General Edward Hand Mansion on Thursdays, Nov. 4, 11 and 18, and Fridays, Nov. 5, 12 and 19, with performances at 7 and 8:30 p.m. Each performance will run approximately 50 minutes, with scenes taking place in each of the four parlors on the main floor and in the central hallway of the circa 1794 mansion. The play was originally performed at Rock Ford to sold-out audiences in 2019. The script draws from the first of the novel’s three volumes, which follows the title character’s efforts to set up her friend Harriet Smith and the village vicar. The story takes place circa 1800 - Revolutionary War Gen. Edward Hand’s
era - albeit in England. The performance also includes period music and dancing, which was coordinated in part by Rock Ford’s period dancers, led by Glenda Jardel. To comply with COVID-19 precautions and to allow the play to be performed within the house, tickets are limited to 15 per performance, and face coverings by audience members will be required. Early reservations are encouraged. Visitors should bear in mind that this event is not handicapped-accessible. Guests will stand during the performance and follow the characters from room to room on the first floor of the mansion. To purchase tickets, visit http://rockford.yapsody.com.
