Go Shopping At The Olde Salem Bazaar BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Start your holiday shopping early by heading to the Olde Salem Bazaar. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the rear building of the Historic Salem United Church of Christ, 324 Walnut St., Columbia. “We’ll have lots of crafts and Members of the Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad
handmade items for sale,” said Hilary Smith, who noted that the church has held the bazaar for at least 25 years. “Some of us in the church make the crafts, including wreaths for all occasions and Christmas wreaths.” Church members will also be selling “dustpan crafts,” which are floral displays created on a small dustpan.
The display is located on the second floor of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society.

Keeping Their Love Of Trains On Track BY CATHY MOLITORIS
n the second floor of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, you can find a bunch of kids indulging in their passion. But these aren’t your typical kids - most are in their 60s and 70s. “We’re really kids who never grew up,” explained Chris Cohan, one of the younger members of the Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad. “We just love trains.” The group shares its enthusiasm for HO-scale model trains on the fourth Sunday of the month from May through October. Beginning Thanksgiving weekend, the display runs on Saturdays and Sundays through the first weekend after the new year.
O
“We do this because we love it, and we do it for the kids,” said member Rick Christopher. “And, we do it for the kids who are maybe just a little bit older than you’d expect.”
“We’re just a bunch of guys who love trains and love to get together.” The 2,200-square-foot layout features a section depicting Columbia’s riverfront in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, created by member Tony Segro. “Tony scratch-built every one of these buildings,” said Cohan, noting that two in the layout still stand in
Columbia today. Segro started on the layout in 2000, working on and off over the next 16 years to complete it. “I used photos from the historical society to make it as accurate as I could,” he stated. “They had a lot of information I could use.” The layout also includes scenes created by the imagination of the club members. For Walter Bosch, who came to check out the display on a recent Sunday and was joined by a crowd of other visitors, the trains offer a chance to indulge in nostalgia. “I love watching them,” he said. Christopher noted that when he joined the club about four years ago, it brought him right back to his childhood. See Trains pg 3

Julie Baum, supporter relations director of Align Life Ministries, is clear on how the organization, which first opened in 1985 as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services, has come to be called Align Life Ministries. “The short answer is, ‘It was God’s idea,’” she said. The long answer is a little more complicated. “First, God taught us the importance of having the word Align in our name,” explained Baum, who added, “When you align your heart and mind with Him,

The last time Ironville United Methodist Church (UMC) hosted its annual holiday bazaar was November of 2019. Now that businesses have reopened and a sense of normalcy is slowly returning,

urday, Nov. 6. In addition to gently used items available for purchase, food, vendors, and a white elephant room will be part of the event. There will be an assortment of baked goods, along with hamburger barbecue, ham and cheese sandwiches on pretzel rolls, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut, chips, soft pretzels, and beverages. All of the food, baked goods, and beverages available for purchase at the bazaar will be donated from church members. Participating vendors will sell handmade jewelry, aprons, crocheted items, and more.
The display is constantly evolving as new members join and add to it, so even if you’ve seen it once, you’ll see something new the next time you visit, Cohan said. And the members of the club are on hand each weekend to answer questions or point out unique features of the display. “If you’ve ever enjoyed watching trains, you’ll love this,” Christopher said. The Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at 21 N. Second St., Columbia, on Saturdays and Sundays from Nov. 27 through Jan. 9 (except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day). Admission is free. Trains from pg 1 “I’ve loved trains since I was a little kid,” he said, echoing the sentiment of most of the members in the club. “When I started here, my love of HO trains just came flooding back to me.” “HO,” as Christopher explained, is the type of scale used for the model trains. The trains are 187th the size of their real counterparts, and the members said they believe it’s the best scale for displaying accurate details and providing the best viewing experience. Membership in the club is open to anyone who loves trains. “We have no official officers, no dues, no membership fees,” said Christopher. “We’re just a bunch of guys who love trains and love to get together. Our only rule is you have to get along with everybody.”

Proceeds from the bazaar are used to benefit church projects and missions, Smith explained, noting that the church marks its 218th anniversary this year. “For this bazaar, the bulk of the money we raise will go toward upkeep of our educational building,” she noted. Several community groups use the building throughout the year, including Fresh Express, which distributes free food from the site during the winter months. “Our bazaar always has a lot of unique items to see, and you can pick up some really great homemade baked goods and soup,” Smith said. “It’s a fun way to spend a Saturday.” To view the baskets, visit www.historicsalemucc.org and click on the tab for the bazaar. such as a crib. She added that classes are tailored to clients’ needs and may include videos, information on infant care, and prayer. The Gospel is proclaimed in words throughout the program. Parenting classes offer material for parents of children from birth through age 12. Clients may be served in person or virtually. “Ephrata is unique in that there is not another center close by,” said Keretzman, who noted as many as 20 clients a week visit the center. “ We see people from the other side of New Holland,” she said. Baum noted that services are also available for those who have terminated a pregnancy. “We have Bible studies and one-on-one conversations,” she noted. During 2020, the ministry became acquainted with more than 500 new area families when the organization’s stockpile of diapers, baby wipes, and formula was needed by young families unable to obtain those items. “We offered a week’s worth of free baby supplies at a time,” explained Baum, who recalled porch pickups and deliveries to families. “What a blessing to reach people spiritually and to meet physical needs.” Information about Align Life Ministries’ services may be found at https://align lifeministries.org.

life springs forth.” She also noted that nearly a decade ago, the organization felt called to partner with other Christ-centered, life-affirming groups and began working with a ministry in Philadelphia, offering information on partnering with churches, engaging with donors, and even helping to obtain an ultrasound bus for one organization. But partnerships were only part of the story. The ministry also offers equipping resources to other organizations. “ We were meeting with high school students and teaching them ways to walk in sexual integrity,” said Baum, referring to a curriculum for teens and young adults called “Sexuality by Design.” The ministry also offers leadership help in the form of president Lisa Hosler’s book called “The Unexhausted Leader.” “(Our reach) extended beyond the Susquehanna Valley, so the name Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services wasn’t going to work much longer,” said Baum. The organization’s pregnancy services centers, located in Lebanon, Lancaster, Ephrata, and Columbia, became Align Pregnancy Services. Becca Keretzman, director of the Ephrata location, explained that each center offers a variety of services, such as pregnancy tests, prenatal and parenting classes, a baby boutique, and other services, including ultrasounds at some locations. Keretzman described the Earn While You Learn program that rewards parentsto-be with Care Cash that can be used in the baby boutique. Those who attend all 15 weeks of classes may choose from a large item

“This is not an easy show to figure out,” said Jeremy Patterson, who will direct a staged reading of “Blackbird” at Susquehanna Stage. “Whatever you come in believing will be challenged.” The staged reading will be presented at the theater, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 8 p.m. “This is a modern play written by David Harrower,” Patterson stated. “It’s about a meeting between a woman in her late 20s and a man in his

Historic Wrightsville has announced several upcoming events. A Veterans Day program will take place on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m. on the porch and lawn of the Historic Wrightsville Museum, 309 Locust St. The event will include the announcement of the Class of 2021 Tag-a-Flag Honored Veterans. All 72 of the submitted names will be read along with each community veteran’s branch of service and the conflicts they were involved in. Each veteran’s name has been engraved on a metal, military-style dog tag, which will be attached to an American flag to be displayed each Veterans Day. At the ceremony, attendees may submit veterans’ names to be added to the collection next year. Tickets for the following upcoming events will be available at the Veterans Day program or may be reserved by calling the museum at 717252-1169 or by emailing

50s and a relationship that occurred between them 15 years prior.” This is the first play Patterson has directed, and he said he decided to stretch when he was invited to direct a show by Asher Johnson, a board member who handles marketing for the theater. “I pitched him the hardest thing I could think of sort of thinking he’d say ‘no,’ but he didn’t,” Patterson recalled. “He embraced it.” Patterson chose the show as much for its small cast - it features just two characters - as for its subject matter. “Blackbird” will feature Kevin Ditzler in the role of Ray and Gabrielle Dina in the role of Una. After the show, representatives from YWCA Lancaster will be on hand for an audience talkback. “This is a show about a young woman who has been abused. It’s important to funnel that back into the community, to people who can help the audience explore the piece in a safe set-
ting,” Patterson noted. “For me, this exists solely as a work of art, but the responsibility on my end after participating in the art is to put it into the hands of people who are experts in the field.” Patterson said a staged reading gives the actors a different experience than they’d get in a fully formed production. “The big difference is the actors don’t have to contend with the off-book deadline,” he remarked. “Doing a staged reading requires a different skill set. You have to be able to hold your place and keep the other actor’s attention and the audience’s attention.” He added that he will dedicate “Blackbird” to his directing mentors, Don A. and Bob C., and that he hopes to direct again soon. “I like the craft of working in the theater,” he said, noting that he is usually on stage as an actor. “I’m excited about the idea of being able to expand my skill set.” “Blackbird” has won several awards since it debuted in
2005 and earned multiple Tony nominations as a revival in 2016. A 2016 film titled “Una” was based on the play and received critical praise. Susquehanna Stage will present “Blackbird” as the last show in its series of staged readings called The Undercurrent. Donations will be accepted for YWCA Lancaster. For more information on the performance, visit www.susquehannastage.com.

Ironville UMC from pg 3 Shirk mentioned that she is happy Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown will host its holiday bazaar on the same day because people can go from one bazaar to the next. Attendees of Ironville UMC’s last bazaar were
encouraged to bring dog or cat food, which was then given to the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. This year’s bazaar is a fundraiser for a new heating and cooling system in the church’s library. “I’m looking forward to seeing people come out, enjoy
themselves, and have some camaraderie and fellowship because it’s been a long time since we’ve had that,” said Shirk. For more information about the bazaar, readers may call the church at 717-684-8072 or Shirk at 717-341-2921.
