im Blessing, a member of the Eastern York High School Class of 1964, had a question. “I reached out to members of our class because, out of curiosity, I wondered how many veterans we had,” he recalled. “I asked them to send me their stories.” He soon found out there are 35 members of the Class of 1964 who are veterans. “We covered all the bases,” said Blessing, who enlisted in the Army right after graduation at age 17. “We had everyone from a doctor to a corpsman to a helicopter pilot to a cook.” To honor the service of these men, Blessing worked with Eastern York principal Bill Rickard to create a plaque listing their names. The plaque will be presented during an assembly on Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11. “It’s important to recognize our veterans, some of whom made the

He noted that he hopes the assembly will reinforce for the students how he and his classmates were once in their shoes. “For the seniors especially, I think it’s important for them to imagine where we were and what we did right after we graduated from school,” he said. “I want them to picture themselves where we were six months from now when we were their age.” Rickard, who became principal this year, said he hopes to make a Veterans Day assembly a tradition at the school. “This assembly and this plaque is a way to emphasize the importance of patriotism,” he said. “A lot of people are divided right now, but no matter who we are or what we believe, we are all Americans, and we should show our patriotism.”

I want them to understand the importance of service.” The plaque will be first of its kind installed at the high school, but Rickard hopes to add more. “We want students to see the connections between what they do in school and what happens out in the world when they leave here,” he stated. What started out as a plaque presentation has blossomed into a full Veterans Day assembly that will include the entire school, Rickard said. “We’ll have the plaque presentation, plus a color guard will present the colors, and the band is working on playing music for the assembly,” he stated. Eight veterans will be coming to represent the Class of 1964, including Phil Lehman, who served with the Navy Seabees. “I’m glad we can honor the service of our classmates,” he said. “It’s important that

In December of 2019, Mark Platts was at an event chatting with Liz and Steve Winand, the owners of Shank’s Mare Outfitters, when he mentioned something. “I said, ‘We’re looking to get a bigger boat,’” recalled Platts, the president of Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA). “Steve said, ‘Hey, I know a boat you might be interested in.’” That boat turned out to be the Chief Uncas, built in 1912 by the Electric Launch Company for Adolphus Busch, co-founder of the

Anheuser-Busch company. It was for sale in New York, where it had been in private use and used for public tours on Otsego Lake, adjacent to Cooperstown. Two years later, the boat is in storage in Lancaster County, and plans are in the works to use the Chief Uncas for river tours. For three seasons, the SNHA has been offering free pontoon boat tours on the Susquehanna River as part of a pilot program funded by grants. “We wanted to see if people

wanted to take tours on the river, and obviously they do,” Platts said of the tours that sold out quickly each summer. SNHA plans to replace the pontoon boat tours with rides on the Chief Uncas beginning in mid-summer 2022. Obtaining the Chief Uncas felt like it was meant to be, Platts explained. “First, it’s a historic boat, and we’re a heritage organization, so it fits our mission,” he stated. Second, even though it’s 109 years old, it’s a green boat, so that fits the organization’s conservation focus. And, third, although the boat is moving states, it’s not really leaving its home. “It’s spent its entire life at the headwaters of the Susquehanna
River,” he said, noting that the river begins at Otsego Lake. When Platts went to see the boat in New York, he knew right away it was the perfect choice. “We went up to see the boat in winter storage,” he remarked. “We probably saw it in its worst condition, in a boat yard, and even in its worst condition, we were like, ‘Wow, this is really cool.’” Named for a character in James Fenimore Cooper’s novel “The Last of the Mohicans,” the Chief Uncas is 55 feet long and nine and a half feet wide. It has room for about 25 people and is powered by two electric motors and 16 12-volt batteries that propel the boat at a speed of 8 mph.
The leisurely pace of the boat will be ideal for river tours, Platts said, and the goal is to have the boat in the water in May for testing, to train the crew and to get Coast Guard clearance to operate. “This boat is an elegant way to enjoy the outdoors and go cruising on the water,” he noted. Acquisition of the boat was made possible by donors including Ann B. Barshinger, Doug Hoke and George and Bambi Long, along with additional private gifts and public grants. Income from tours, charters, sponsors and donations will fund annual operating costs and maintenance. For more information or to donate, visit https://susqnha.org/support/donate.
asking for donations, everyone was so generous,” she said. “Like everyone during COVID, we were hit hard, and we need the financial support of an event like this.” Although the focus of the party is fundraising, McCrady noted that talking to area merchants also highlighted another benefit of the event.
“It was amazing to me the amount of people who didn’t even know this theater existed,” she stated. “That sort of changed our focus to wanting to bring people into this building and become familiar with what we do here.” Along with Susquehanna Stage performances, Marietta Center for Arts holds a variety of classes for children and adults, and the space is available to rent for events. Proceeds from the ’70s party will help with building upkeep and renovations, McCrady said. “We are looking at updating the Eater Theater, which is the main theater,” she noted, adding that the Eater Foundation has helped to fund some building updates. “We need a new sound system and new lights, so that’s what we’re focusing on.” The party will offer an opportunity for a fun night out, she commented. “Come out, go dancing and enjoy yourself,” she said. “And you’ll be supporting the arts at the same time.” For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.susquehanna stage.com.

The Millersville Turkey Trot provides fun for people of all ages on Thanksgiving morning. BY COURTNEY MENGEL
On November 18, 1973, Bob Charles and Harold Kramer organized the very first Millersville Turkey Trot. The course was 10 miles long and attracted about 800 participants. Jeff Bradley, who had just competed in the NCAA national cross-country competition the day before, won that year’s race and received a turkey as his prize. The race became a 5K in 1978 to match the changing preferences of the running community and brought in an average of 125 to 150 competitors per year over the next few decades. For almost 40 years, the Turkey Trot was held the Sunday before Thanksgiving. In 2012, however, the date of the race moved to Thanksgiving morning and now sees more than 1,000 participants each year. The 49th annual Millersville Turkey Trot 5K and half-mile children’s fun run will be hosted at Millersville University’s Biemesderfer Stadium, 45 Pucillo Drive, Millersville, on Thursday, Nov. 25. Unlike years prior, the entire event will be held outside, which will provide ample space for social distancing. Packet pickup will take place at Biemesderfer Stadium on Wednesday, Nov. 24, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. and on Nov. 25 from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. The half-mile children’s fun run will begin at 8:30 a.m., the Turkey Trot 5K will start at 9 a.m., and giveaway prizes will be drawn at random for 5K participants at 10 a.m. Preregistration and same-day registration are available. Those who preregister for the 5K by searching for “Millersville Turkey Trot” at www.raceroster.com prior to Monday, Nov. 22, will receive a T-shirt. Registration is not required for the half-mile children’s fun run, but individuals may prepurchase a T-shirt. Competitors
with strollers and pets on leashes will be permitted but are required to line up in the back of the starting area. Those who attend the Turkey Trot are encouraged to bring at least two or three nonperishable items for donation to local food banks to help those in need during the holiday season. Believed to be the oldest road race in Lancaster County, the Millersville Turkey Trot provides fun for people of all ages. “We have families, friends, and individuals in the 5K from 5 to almost 90 years of age,” said Tom Ecker, Turkey Trot meet director. “It’s just a very enjoyable event.” The top three overall male and female winners will receive cash prizes. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in each age category: 14 and under, 15 to 18, 19 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, and 60 to 69. Two awards will be given to the age group of 70 to 79, and one award will be given to participants age 80 and over. Race ribbons will be awarded to the first 100 finishers of the half-mile children’s fun run. Awards may be picked up immediately after the race, and race results will be available at www.motiontiming.com. “We provide the forum, but it’s all the participants who create the atmosphere,” stated Ecker. “We appreciate seeing everyone come back here year after year.” For more information, visit www.millersvilleturkeytrot.com or email millersvillett@comcast.net.
