INSIDE THIS ISSUE

BY GENE SCHENCK

It’s been nearly 175 years since they put him in the ground. His family and friends are gone. The last people to actually know him have been gone for more than a century. All we know is hearsay at best. All we know for sure is his name - or part of it - and the dates of his arrival on and departure from Earth spelled out in hard-to-read, weathered letters on the broken piece of stone that marks his eternity.

Who cares? We all should - especially those who inhabit the same area that George Lieberknecht called home before his demise in 1846. Fortunately for Lieberknecht and others who lived around Canadochly Lutheran Church in the 18th and 19th centuries, four current members of that church have spent a year as unofficial cemetery conservators. Jim Anspach of Columbia, Gene Smeltzer of Lower Windsor Township, Bill Dehoff of Windsor, and Bruce Herbst of East Prospect have been getting plenty of exercise but not much recognition as they work to restore the headstones in a small graveyard on the East Prospect Road next to the church’s event hall. The centuries have been hard on the stones, especially the marble ones eroded by years of rain that has slowly dissolved the letters carved on the surface. Trees have

fallen, and branches have broken some stones, so these men do their best to piece them back together. Few stones are plumb, so they dig holes to reset the stones and point them skyward. Most of the stones in the old section next to the event hall are from the 1800s, but some, the ones closer to the road, date to the 1700s. Some of these monuments stood near Canadochly Lutheran during our nation’s early years, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. They were here when canal boats traveled the creeks and rivers and when wagon trains carried families across the country to settle the West. At least four of the stones mark the resting places of Revolutionary War soldiers. Those markers were decorated with American flags and bronze medallions from the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Many of the headstones at the cemetery date back to the 19th century, with at least four marking the resting place of Revolutionary War soldiers.

“We’ve reset more than 30 stones,” said Anspach, who has helped with similar cemetery restoration efforts at Mount Bethel Cemetery in Columbia. “The place looks better and better. We hope to get to the old slate markers in the spring.” George Lieberknecht’s headstone gives testimony to his German roots,

as its epitaph is written in German: “Hier Ruhen Die Gebeine Von George Liebernecht. Geb 3 Feb 1766 Starbolen 12 Sept 1846.” Translation: “Here rest the bones of George Liebernecht, Born Feb. 3, 1799, Died Sept. 12, 1846.” Who would have imagined that four good men would restore that old marker in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic?

sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.” More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be registered 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. In typical years, about 80 to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF is requiring organiza-

deliver the boxes, we’re going to load up their car and then they’ll go off and deliver,” he said. “They won’t be going inside anyone’s home. They’ll leave the box on the porch.” He said it was important that the tradition of delivering the boxes continued, despite the pandemic. “What makes our event unique is that we actually deliver,” he noted. “There are places people can go and stand in line to get a meal, but we bring the meal right to the people that are in need.” The Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers raise money all year to pay for items in the boxes, he said,

as well as relying on donations from community organizations, businesses and individuals. In addition to the box delivery, the groups have joined forces with Foresters of America to provide Christmas dinner to residents of area senior apartments and communities, including Trinity House, St. Peter Apartments, Our Home of Hope, Marietta Senior Apartments, Brereton Manor and Sylvan Retreat. Those meals will be delivered on Sunday, Dec. 27. “We are happy to provide a service to the people of Columbia,” Meshey said. “We want to help people in need.”

For more than 30 years, the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers have been providing free Christmas dinner food boxes to the community. A pandemic wasn’t going to stop that, said John Meshey, project coordinator. “There is a need for this in our community,” he noted. “This year, a lot of people are hurting.” Christmas dinner boxes will be delivered to the community on Sunday, Dec. 20. The deadline to register for a box is Friday, Dec. 4, and early registration is encouraged. To register, readers may email ColumbiaChristmasFoodBoxes@ gmail.com or call 717-715-3592. Each box will contain the fixings for a traditional Christmas meal, Meshey said. “It will include a turkey, bread, milk, potatoes, canned vegetables, stuffing and a few other items,” he stated. The organizations expect to pack 700 boxes for families in the

Columbia and surrounding areas, he noted, adding that the event has grown significantly over the years. “When this started about 35 years ago, we had one family we helped,” Meshey recalled. “We knew there were people who could use something over the holidays to brighten their day. It just grew from there, and this year especially, we’re really happy to be continuing the tradition.” COVID-19 has changed a few things about the operation, he said, including how the boxes will be packed. “We are looking for community groups to sign up to pack boxes the Friday and Saturday before we distribute them,” he explained. “We want people to schedule a time to come in and help so that we can keep the groups small.” On delivery day, a system will be set up to limit contact as much as possible, Meshey said. “When people come to help

establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17-room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the

Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where

there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian

buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze

Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America” because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. On Thursday, Nov. 26, the fellowship hall at Columbia United Methodist Church will be empty, but the community will still feel the church’s love. That is the day the church will give away Thanksgiving dinners, as it has done for the past 10 years. “We usually have a sit-down dinner, but we couldn’t do that this year, said Joann Price, impact team chair for the church. “It was still important to us to do this event, even if we had to do it in a different way. Because of COVID-19, the church could not hold a large indoor luncheon. Instead, dinners will be available for pickup on Nov. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 510 Walnut St. To

reserve a dinner and schedule a pickup time, readers may call the church office at 717-684-2356. The reservation deadline is Friday, Nov. 20. “The idea for this meal started about 10 years ago, said Price, who noted that it was the brainchild of church member Charles Kelly. “He liked the sense of family this meal provides to the community. Some of the people who come to the meal do not have a family to spend the day with, so we become their family. It’s a way to spend the day together. Although this year’s meal will be different logistically, the motivation for the event is the same, Price said. “We didn’t want to cancel this year even though a lot of things are being canceled, she explained. “We want to still provide a meal for people and

remind them we are still here for them. The Thanksgiving meal will feature all of the traditional components, including turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, vegetables, gravy and a variety of desserts. There is no cost for the meal, Price said, and funding for ingredients is provided by church and community donations. Price anticipates serving about 150 meals and noted that anyone is eligible to receive one. “We have a lot of need in our community, she stated. “We have older people who don’t cook anymore or people who don’t have anyone to visit for Thanksgiving,

and this way, they can still enjoy a nice meal. In addition to the takeout meals, the church will provide meals to the Hands Across the Street ministry in Columbia as well. Price said it will be hard to see the fellowship hall deserted on Thanksgiving, but the spirit of the event will live on. “It’s not really about the hall, she said, adding that the church is still open for services at 10 a.m. on Sundays. “It’s about the people, and it’s about our community. It’s about keeping traditions alive in our church, and it’s about letting our community know we are here for them.

ONE LITTLE FLU SHOT CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE Protect P Pr rot otect ec ct yourself your yo urse ur self lf and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

Schedule your flu shot today at LGHealth.org/Schedule.
