Holiday Tea Will Warm The Spirit BY CATHY MOLITORIS

On Saturday, Dec. 11, you can come “Home Again” at Historic Wrightsville Inc.’s annual holiday tea. That’s the theme of the tea, which will once again be held on the heated patio of the John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville, after last year’s event was offered to go only due to the pandemic. This year, participants may choose from either an 11 a.m. or a 2 p.m. seating or have the option of taking tea to go. The tea will feature five courses, prepared by the events committee of Historic Wrightsville, under the

ou might think you know the story of Rapunzel or Snow White, but if you go to see Columbia High School’s fall play, you might want to think again. “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon” tells these well-known stories with a twist. The show will be performed at the school, 901 Ironville Pike, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20. “This show is a mashup of all the Brothers Grimm stories,” said Georgetta Kaufhold, a senior who plays multiple parts in the show. “It’s classic stories with a modern twist.” Audiences will see familiar stories, such as the tale of Hansel and Gretel, along with lesser-known tales such as “The Devil and His Grandmother,” said senior Douglas Sumpman. “It’s a modernized take on these

Narrators link the various tales together in the show, and audience participation is also featured, including opportunities for the crowd to make sound effects. To prepare for the interactive parts, the cast members often rehearsed with crew members sitting in the audience so they could hone their timing skills. For Nyla, being in the test audience was a fun job, but it was also a bit stressful. “The first time I saw the show in the audience, I could not stop laughing. Even when they took a break, I was still laughing so hard,” she recalled. “I was worried, and I was thinking, ‘How am I going to keep quiet when I’m backstage? I can’t stop laughing.’” Tickets for “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon” will be available at the door. District mask and social distancing policies will be in effect during the performance.

stories,” noted Douglas, who also plays multiple parts. “These stories are a little edgier, a little rougher around the edges than you might remember them being.” For Nyla Nell, a senior who is a member of the crew, the show appeals because it’s full of comedy. “There are a lot of pop culture references and references to things in the news,” she stated. “If you’re up on pop culture, you’ll find it hilarious.” Matthew Eyster, a senior who also plays several roles in the show, said audiences should be prepared for surprises. “You can expect a lot of laughter for sure,” he remarked. “It’s a very fun, very fast-paced show. You can also expect the unexpected. There are things that you are not going to see coming. And for parents or adults in the audience, I’d say pay particular attention, because there are a lot of jokes just for you.”

director of Joyce Heiserman, event chair. Heiserman is the former owner of and cook for a bed-andbreakfast in Marietta. “As people are coming in to the tea and getting settled, they can enjoy tea and scones,” she noted. “We’ll have two kinds of scones cinnamon sugar and fresh cranberry - and they’ll be served with cream and curd.” Participants will have the choice of either apple cheddar soup, made with Wrightsville’s locally renowned cheddar cheese, or a take on Italian wedding soup as well as the choice of either a green salad or pineapple pretzel salad. The savory portion of the tea will include ham and brie pastries, open-faced cucumber and bacon tea sandwiches, curried chicken salad sandwiches and more. Desserts will include pecan crescent cookies, peanut butter mousse cups and mini Boston cream pie cupcakes. “I pick out the recipes, and then the committee tries them out,” Heiserman said. “They taste them all and vote on their favorites, which then make up the menu for the tea.”

This year, the organization held a tea in the spring as well, and the group hopes to continue doing two teas a year going forward. The week prior to the tea, Historic Wrightsville will host Chapels, Carols

For instance, Good Samaritan Services provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Tenfold - an organization formed by the merger of Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) and Tabor Community Services in 2020 - offers housing advocacy and financial empowerment to Lancaster County residents. The list goes on and on. On one day, 24 hours, the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) provides a platform in which people can donate money to participating nonprofits serving this region. This platform, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), is celebrating its 10th year in 2021. Over $60 million has been raised for local organizations by more than 40,000 donors since LCCF started the ExtraGive. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic,

last year’s ExtraGive brought in about $13.4 million. This year’s ExtraGive is set for Friday, Nov. 19. Beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. All participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the stretch pool, which will total at least $500,000. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors. More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be a registered 501(c)(3) organization in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. Each participating nonprofit has

its own profile on the ExtraGive website, and some include a nondiscriminatory policy, which is a new feature. “This is a nice addition because it helps people know that their values are reflected in the organization to which they’re donating,” stated Tracy Cutler, executive vice president of LCCF. From 6 p.m. to midnight on Nov. 19, LCCF will host the ExtraGive Fest in Penn Square as it counts down the final hours of the event. Live music will be provided by DJ

Salinger; Sir Dominique Jordan, The Prolific One; Adrian Garcia; and Mama Tried. There will be a local beer garden from Springhouse Brewing Company as well as local food pop-ups from East King Street businesses, such as Tellus360, Blazin’ J’s, and New Holland Coffee Co. All are welcome to attend. Unvaccinated guests will be encouraged to wear masks. “The day is all about giving - giving back to the nonprofits that serve our county,” said Cutler.

this year’s tour includes at least three homes that have never been featured before. “We try to get a variety of homes,” he said. “That’s why people come back year after year, because they are not going to see the same things.” A search committee begins looking for homes to feature early in the year, he said, and although some homes have been featured in the tour more than once, the committee tries not to revisit a site for at least five years. Tourgoers will receive a booklet as their ticket, and it will include a map of the tour stops along with information about friends of the MRA businesses and organizations in town. The tour also features an option to travel to stops by bus. Participants can park and board the bus in the Donegal Intermediate School parking lot, 1177 River Road, or can park in town and board anywhere along the route. The tour is a fundraiser for the MRA, which has worked to restore many of the public buildings in Marietta. “Our organization has been instrumental over the years in helping to preserve historic landmarks in town,” Spickler stated. He added that although Marietta is full of older homes, the tour offers a chance to see a variety of places. “We have homes in town that are modern. We have homes that were built in the early 1800s. It’s really an eclectic mix,” he said. “It’s about how the homeowners choose to decorate their homes and what their style is. You never know what they’re going to surprise you with when you walk in the door.” Advance tickets are available for the tour at several locations, which are listed at www.mariettarestoration.org. There is a discount for purchasing tickets in advance, but tickets can also be purchased at the event in the Donegal Intermediate School parking lot; at the First National Bank building, 100 W.
