Seniors Can Enjoy A Free Christmas Meal BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Rain, sleet or snow can’t stop Helen Bechtold from giving back to seniors on Christmas Day. “I’ve dug my car out of the snow and driven in to serve this meal,” said Bechtold, who, along with Sis Luzader, has been offering a free lunch for more than 30 years. Even a pandemic won’t stop the “Columbia Christmas Ladies,” although it has changed their plans just a bit. Like last year, this year’s lunch will only be offered to go, but seniors will have the opportunity to come inside and pick up their meals. The lunch See Seniors pg 4

Celebrating Christmas In Columbia BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hristmas will kick off in Columbia on Saturday, Nov. 27, when the town will hold a variety of events in conjunction with Small Business Saturday. A fire truck parade with the Columbia Fire Department will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will lead Santa Claus to Hinkle’s Restaurant, 261 Locust St., where he will greet families and pose for free pictures

from 9 to 11 a.m. Christmas cookie decorating and Santa’s workshop will be held at Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mrs. Claus will be at the Columbia Public Library, 24 S. Sixth St., from 4 to 5 p.m., and she will read “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” at 5:45 p.m. before a tree lighting in Locust Street Park at 6 p.m. Carolers from Columbia High School, dressed in Victorian garb,
will perform throughout the day, said Bethany Hartzok, who is coordinating the event for the Merchants Association of Columbia. At the tree lighting, carolers from the choirs of St. Peter’s Catholic Church will sing. “We’ll hand out song sheets for people to join us in caroling,” she noted. More than 30 small businesses will be participating in the day, Hartzok stated. “Businesses that
are participating in Small Business Saturday will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be offering specials, promotional activities or other fun activities throughout the day,” she said. Each business will also participate in a Christmas Cash drawing. “Shoppers can pick up a punch card at any participating business, and once they get a stamp at six shops, they’ll be entered to win one of two cash prizes,” Hartzok said. The Christmas in Columbia and Small Business Saturday events help to promote the town as a destination for unique shops and restaurants. When the Merchant’s Association of Columbia formed in 2019, the group set a goal of supporting continued growth for local small businesses. “This day is about building small businesses up in the town and getting as many merchants as possible

about two decades and that the group is excited to be partnering with DCA this year. The Mountville Lions will celebrate 75 years of service in 2022. DCA senior and NHS president Elisabeth Self said that members of the organization were excited to get involved with the drive. “This is a great way to serve the community,” she said. Lions Club member Jeff Weinman said that the idea was to bring together schools, churches, and other area organizations in a united effort. “We were hoping to see more community involvement in Mountville,” said Weinman, who noted that the Lions collect items for the food bank at their monthly meetings. He added the Lions have partnered with the Mountville VFW Reese Hall Post 8757 to collect food for the upcoming drive. “(The Columbia Food Bank) has been serving Mountville for 30 years,” said Weinman, who said he believes the Lions have held the food drive for
responded positively. “We decided it was an amazing idea and a great cause,” she said. “Everyone seemed intrigued. This is a neat way for us to branch out and contribute to the community.” To encourage all DCA students to take part, organizers have offered an incentive to classes to bring food items to the school on Monday, Dec. 6 and Dec. 7. “If your class brings an average of four items per person for food drive, (all the class members) are eligible for a dress-down day the following Friday,” said Hostetter. Hurley said that students plan to distribute flyers and contact churches in the Mountville area to encourage residents to take part in the food drive. The Mountville Lions Club food drive has been an annual tradition in the area for several years, but it was not held in 2020. Both the Lions and DCA hope that this year’s drive will be a resounding success.

Donna Hurley, National Honor Society (NHS) adviser at Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), is excited to encourage local residents to take part in the food drive the Mountville Lions Club is holding in cooperation with DCA’s NHS chapter and the DCA student government. “Bring a lot (of food),” encouraged Hurley, who noted she would like to see the collection truck filled. “We really want to bless the Columbia Food Bank.” The Lions have secured real estate agent Craig Hartranft’s moving truck for the drive. On Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., a truck will be located in the parking lot at Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay St., Mountville, across from DCA. A member of the Mountville Lions Club and representatives of NHS and the student government will be present at the truck to accept items for the Columbia Food Bank, a nonprofit entity working to eliminate food insecurity, located at 340 Locust Street, Columbia. “If (donors) need help to unload, we will have people there to help with that,” said Hurley. Foods that will be accepted include unexpired nonperishables, such as peanut butter, canned meat, canned vegetables, cereal, and

will be served on Christmas Day, Saturday, Dec. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St. The lunch will include ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, cranberry sauce and a dessert. Seniors will also receive a gift bag full of a variety of goodies. “No one goes home without a present,” Bechtold said. She began serving the meal to seniors 34 years ago, when she worked as director of the Columbia Senior Center. Luzader joined her a year later. “We wanted to give seniors who are alone on Christmas not just a meal but also a chance to be with other people,” Bechtold stated. “We wanted to let them know that when the holiday is here, people in the community are here for them.” The meal is open to all seniors age 55 and up throughout Lancaster County and surrounding areas. Bechtold noted that seniors have

come from York County and even from out of state in past years. “This is not just for low-income seniors. It’s open to any senior who is looking for a meal or who would otherwise be spending the holiday alone,” Bechtold explained. “Maybe they have family who live out of the area or maybe they don’t have any family. It’s open to everyone.” The fire hall donates the space for the meal, and the Columbia Lions Club provides donations as well. Bechtold also encourages donations of cash or gift cards from the community to support the event. Members of the Donegal High School wrestling team help with setup on Christmas Eve. Although the meal is not a sitdown event this year, Bechtold said there is still an opportunity to visit with friends. “We can introduce people who may be new in town and encourage fellowship while they pick up their meals,” she noted. Bechtold said that watching people connect with each other is her favorite aspect of the event. “I love seeing smiles on people’s faces,” she commented. “That’s the best part of Christmas for me. It’s knowing we are spreading joy. We want to make Christmas an enjoyable day for everyone.” Masks and social distancing will be required for meal pickup. Reservations are required for the meal by Friday, Dec. 17. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Delivery and transportation options will not be available this year. To make a reservation, call Bechtold at 717-397-2267 or Luzader at 717-684-0128.

As it has for more than 30 years, the community of Columbia will lend a hand to those in need this Christmas season. The annual Christmas Food Box Delivery will take place on Sunday, Dec. 19. The effort is organized by the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, and aid is also provided by area businesses and organizations and hundreds of volunteers. Each year, hundreds of boxes are packed with essential holiday dinner items and additional grocery staples. Each box contains a turkey, bread, milk, canned vegetables, cereals, and more. The method of packing the food boxes will be determined closer to the event to adhere to current COVID guidelines. Organizers will need many drivers to deliver the boxes on Dec. 19. Volunteer drivers should arrive at 11 a.m. at the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., Columbia, where they will be directed to line up for the touchless delivery system. Toys will no longer be delivered with
