Honoring Veterans With Wreaths BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Susquehanna Grace Community Church (SGCC) will host the Road to Bethlehem.
The Christmas Story Comes To Life BY CATHY MOLITORIS
n Saturday, Dec. 11, pile the kids in the car and take in the Christmas story when Susquehanna Grace Community Church (SGCC) hosts the Road to Bethlehem. The drive-through outdoor live Nativity will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church, 6694 Sunrise Ave., Wrightsville. “ We will have 11 scenes that people can drive through to see the story of the birth of Jesus,” said Becki Buser, event coordinator. “It begins with Caesar describing the decree he has sent out that everyone must be taxed and counted, which is why Mary and Joseph are going to Bethlehem.” Additional scenes will include the heavenly hosts, the wise men and the innkeeper, and the final manger scene will feature Mary, Joseph and Jesus. Sixty volunteers from SGCC and Pleasant View Church in Red Lion will portray various characters in the scenes, which will also feature live animals. “ We have countless people working behind
“It’s a nice family night and a way to get into the spirit of the holiday.” SGCC has been holding the event for more than 30 years, and Buser’s family has been a part of it for almost half that time. She noted that this year’s drive-through will be held in tribute to Mary Caldwell, a longtime organizer of the event who passed away earlier this year. Monetary and nonperishable food donations will be accepted for Hearts for Hunger, a food pantry located at Pleasant View Church. The pantry is especially in need of
kids’ cereal, hot chocolate mixes, boxed rice, chips or other snacks, flour and sugar, among other items. Buser noted that the Road to Bethlehem began as a way for the church members to share their love of Christmas with the community. “We wanted to show the true meaning of Christmas from a biblical standpoint,” she explained. In the past, the event has included indoor activities as well as the outdoor scenes, but only the outdoor portion was held last year due to the pandemic. This year’s event is being held outdoors only, but Buser noted that organizers hope to bring back the indoor component next year. In the meantime, she encourages families to come out and enjoy the beauty of the luminarias that line the driveway before taking in the Christmas scenes. “It’s a nice family night and a way to get into the spirit of the holiday,” she said. Christmas will feature presents for adults as well, so children can shop for their parents. As Adinolfi explained, all gifts will be in a bag and people will have the option to wrap them at the on-site wrapping station. Each child will receive two gifts with the exception of gift cards, which will be offered as a single gift. Presents are donated by local individuals and businesses, Adinolfi noted, and organizers also accept monetary donations to purchase presents. Breakfast will be served during Kidz Christmas, and Santa will be on hand to greet children. Adinolfi encouraged anyone in need to participate in Kidz Christmas. “We are here to help in any way we can,” she said. said Faith Adinolfi. “We’ve been offering Kidz Christmas for more than five years,” she stated, noting that the organizers start preparing for the event in mid-October. “We do it to help meet a need for families that are less fortunate. Our heart is to make sure that the kids in the community have a great Christmas.” Adinolfi is the coordinator of Kidz Jam, which offers lessons about Jesus through music, crafts and activities at the church. Families may contact her to sign up for Kidz Christmas. “I’m asking parents to email me information that I need, which would be the children’s name, age and some ideas on gifts we can try to get for them,” she stated, adding that parents may also call the church office to sign up. “It is for all ages, and the towns we are reaching are Columbia, Wrightsville and other close towns.” Along with gifts for children through age 18, Kidz

Ron Bonacci (center, with award) accepted the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Heart Association.
The American Heart Association recently recognized Weis Markets with a Distinguished Achievement Award for its significant contributions to the success of the Association’s Eastern States region. According to Natalie Wech, co-chair of the American Heart Association’s southcentral Pennsylvania board of directors, Weis has raised and committed more than $1.5 million since its inaugural Life Is Why consumer campaign, which launched in February 2019. In 2021, during American Heart Month, February, store teams across the company’s 197 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Virginia raised $575,000 for the Life Is Why consumer campaign. Additionally, Weis Markets became the first sponsor of the new Live Fierce Capital Region community impact campaign. This yearlong campaign helped the American Heart Association address community health priorities, including providing CPR in Schools training kits to several school districts throughout central Pennsylvania, supplying a local Federally Qualified Health Center with blood pressure

The campaign also equipped Harrisburg School District with new filtered water bottle filling stations, which will provide students with access to clean drinking water in an effort to encourage them to hydrate with water instead of sodas and other sugary drinks. Local Weis Markets employees who have served as volunteer leaders for the American Heart Association over the past year include Ron Bonacci, vice president of advertising and marketing, southcentral Pennsylvania board of directors member and 2021 Capital Region Heart Ball chair; Jaime Hynoski, community relations and event management specialist, 2021 Capital Region Heart Walk co-chair; Emily Bumgarner, registered dietician, 2021 Capital Region Heart Walk cochair; Wendy Oliver, regional vice president of operations, 2022 Capital Region Go Red for Women co-chair; and Rick Seipp, vice president of pharmacy, 2022 Capital Region Go Red for Women co-chair. The funds raised by supporters like Weis Markets fund the mission of the American Heart Association to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives and the association’s 2024 Health Equity Impact Goal to reduce barriers to health care access and quality. This support allows the American Heart Association to fund investments in cardiovascular research, seek to improve patient outcomes, advocate for policies that promote community health and educate people about healthy living.
